Two bits of great news. First, the obvious - we are getting a new Pale Lights LP. This LP compiles songs from singles, EPs and digital only releases. The lead single is one of my favorite Pale Lights' songs, "You and I" (listen to that bass).

Other good news? Pale Lights is releasing a new album and so is Love, Burns. Philip Sutton (New York) is starting strong in 2024.

I probably don't need to run through the Pale Lights list of touchstones, but I will anyway: Lloyd Cole, The Bats and Felt have all been previous mentions. But, as this is released on Jigsaw Records, they added their own - Weather Prophets and Razorcuts.

Groovey Fanzine (issue #1) YEAR: 1989 CREATED BY: Christina and Jen LOCATION: London SIZE: A5 WHAT’S INSIDE…. Groovey was one of the last fanzines I ever bought, and looking back, it feels like the end of an era.

It was created by two indie pop kids who were totally in love with the sound of jangly guitars and bedroom-recorded singles, particularly if they originated from Scotland (the zine even includes a poetic tribute to the Scottish indie scene, which - for some reason - is written in both English and Japanese).

Christina and Jen were big fans of The Jesus and Mary Chain (apparently the "best band since The Beatles") and seem truly shocked by Bobby Gillespie's claim that he slept with every other member of the band (which was almost certainly nonsense, but exactly the kind of nonsense you wanted to read in a zine like this).

Other bands featured include The Pastels, McCarthy, The Bachelor Pad, The Razorcuts, The Williams, The Anyways, Felt and Edwyn Collins.

Christina and Jen didn't have much interest in the rise of acid house or the indie-dance crossover, although they do mention them in passing. Their review of The Stone Roses' gig at Alexandra Palace on 18th November 1989 has a reluctant admiration for the spectacle, but a deep suspicion of where it was all leading.

The love-affair with San Francisco is real. Chime School are the latest in a run of acclaimed Bay Area groups to hit the UK. Marrying the pristine jangle of electric 12-string guitars with nervy, hooky songs, Chime School conjures a unique and instantly recognisable form of indie pop, rooted in the buoyant, driving pulse of the genre’s 1980’s and 90’s forebears, while still locked in a kaleidoscopic stare with its 1960’s originators.

Guided by San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec, Chime School began as a solo home recording project, paying homage to the formative jangle of The Byrds by way of early Primal Scream; the production and pop sensibility of Biff Bang Pow and The Razorcuts; and the spirit of great singles labels like Creation, Subway, Postcard and Sarah. Though it would have fit with any of those labels, Chime School found a natural home with Slumberland Records, releasing a self-titled debut in 2021, and a follow-up 7” single in 2023.

In its wake, Pastalaniec assembled a live group comprised of Bay Area indie vets, touring up and down the US West Coast, playing with many of the contemporary indie cognoscenti, from labelmates The Umbrellas; The Reds, Pinks & Purples; and Papercuts; as well as Cindy, Blues Lawyer, The Smashing Times, and others.

Chime School- “Give Your Heart Away” single (Slumberland Records)

After this band’s terrific 2021 S/T debut, those of us who ate that album up were hungry for more. Their 2023 single “Coming To Your Town” gave us a taste (with a Buzzcocks' cover on the b-side), but not enough. We needed another full-length.

Well, here it is, or at least the first single (the album isn’t due until late August); and it’s another Grade-A winner from Andy Pastalaniec and company.

Some minor chords open the song until a blast of major chords and organ, and then it’s off to the races! It seems like Pastalaniec can write this stuff in his sleep (don't get me wrong, I know he and his band put a lot of time, effort. and hard work into their songs). Suffice it to say, if you love C86 and bands like the Razorcuts and early Primal Scream, then this will be right up your alley.
