10/9/23.
Nearly 9 years into this blog and I can't believe that The Wedding Present (Leeds, UK) hasn't gotten their own post. There are many bands that have pulled off a 40 year career, but only a few that can still sound this good after all that time - The Bats and Yo La Tengo immediately come to mind.
David Gedge has really worked and reworked ideas. "24 Songs" is yet another example of a band that was as much a singles band as an album band. Hard to believe that Hit Parade 1 & 2 are 30 years old, but "24 Songs" hearkens back to that. The only difference I can tell is that they don't seem to do as many covers - "Felicity" by Orange Juice, "Box Elder MO" by Pavement and "Cattle and Cane" by The Go-Betweens immediately come to mind [EDIT: The last LP side does have a wonderful cover of "White Riot" by The Clash]. If you want to hear an outstanding cover of "My Favourite Dress" listen to "My Favourite Mess" by Thatcher on Acid.
This is a 3 LP behemoth and I've been enjoying every single song. Happy Happy Birthday To Me released the LP version of "24 Songs".

Bizarro, The Wedding Present (1989)
Tumblr media
On the first Wedding Present album George Best, David Gadge was a man at the pulpit of toxic bravado. On Bizarro things were different; in the mix Gadge vocally fought across the music, giving an element of futility and, crucially, vulnerability. That’s endearing, plus the songs extend out in length and complexity; in general, Bizarro only refines and matures the sound of George Best – but does so to such an extent to take the Wedding Present from an ‘alright’ band to an ‘excellent’ one.
Pick: ‘Brassneck’

4/27/24.
On January 1st we posted about Audio Antihero's release from Nosferatu D2. While that band is no more, the Parker brothers are still making music as My Best Unbeaten Brother (Croydon, England).
At the time I mentioned how Nosferatu D2 reminded me of a cross between The Wedding Present and The Fall. My Best Unbeaten Brother immediately made me think of these comps, but this new band's music tends to be a bit more melodic.
"Slayer On a Sunny Day" is one of 15 tracks on the compilation "20 Years of Joy Vol. 2". This compilation celebrates the 20th anniversary of the blog/radio station Joyzine. While there isn't a traditional physical release, there is a card with a download card available. I've listened to this compilation and really enjoyed a lot - most notably My Best Unbeaten Brother and Sergeant Buzfuz.
Audio Antihero will be releasing "Pessimistic Pizza" in digital format at the end of June. Hopefully Jamie will find a way to make a physical release.

John Peel's 50th - Subterranea, London, England, August 30, 1989
I don't know how you celebrated your 50th birthday — if you've made it that far. But John Peel certainly celebrated his semi-centennial in style, with none other than House of Love, the Wedding Present and the Fall playing absolutely killer sets in honor of the legendary DJ. House of Love sound elegant and reverberant, the Wedding Present bring the strum und drang and Mark E. Smith and co. are righteously insane. Totally Peel-y, if you ask me. Listen in and turn it up.

First time you came over, do you remember you saying that you'd stay for good? No I didn't think you would Well we couldn't've been closer, but it was different then, and that's all in the past There I've said it now at last!

George Best, The Wedding Present (1987)
Tumblr media
I’m not from the north, maybe that’s it. On George Best the Wedding Present’s celebrated everyman David Gedge was hearty and heartless – an enabler of laddish expression arguably of direct lineage to the countless self-centred and guileless frontmen in later eras of Britpop and 2000s indie landfill. For me, this debut’s jangling tunes behind the vocals are only half there, while Gedge comes across never witty or poetic but simply aggressive, blunt and charmless.
Pick: ‘What Did your Last Servant Die Of?’
