Asking @quiddie if she'd talk shop w/ me about the storytelling of WBN, part 2: the data!
Stats Beyond Number
When I get intrigued by a story, I like to deep dive, but it's never my first choice, because that process is only exciting for my writer brain. After writing 1M+ words of fiction, the urge to analyze every narrative choice is a hard thing to turn off -- but the first three episodes of Worlds Beyond were doing exactly that. My reader brain was delighted to be carried off to a new world by storytellers who I knew and trusted, and the early going was captivating, enchanting, exciting, etc.
Then at the 45m mark of episode 4, Suvi says to Ame:
"If this is what you need to do, then fine. But please, I ask you as a friend, do not presume to know how I feel, and NEVER contradict me in front of strangers."
Without my writer brain engaged, I reacted as I might in a real-life social encounter: instant red card, I'm never interacting with this person again.
But I wasn't going to let a little bump disturb me, especially with a project that was perfectly tailored to my interests. Longform, earnest fantasy storytelling with pro sound design and such a dream cast it might as well be made by Sega? I pressed on.
Episode 6, Suvi to Ame:
"Hey, shut up? Shut the fuck up."
Now I was starting to rationalize: it's early days, the Simpsons didn't even look like the Simpsons until like, season 3? I'll hang in.
Episode 11 -- the one where Suvi spins out in the shrine of Orima -- was so viscerally unpleasant I yanked my earbuds out in the grocery store and forgot about the podcast for a month.
During that time, the writer brain started to whir in the background.
I couldn't remember the last movie affected me like that. And there was something exciting about what Aabria was doing, on a technical level: it felt like she was jeopardizing the story's viability by going after a core tenet of most actual plays: good vibes only between PCs. Could the story work if the party doesn't get along? If, every week, the audience was at risk of TPK via psychic damage? Forget dangling your protagonists over shark-infested waters, that's real suspense!
So I got back into the story, this time with my analytic brain switched on. It was enjoyable! Watching four people writing in realtime is engrossing. While I struggle to appreciate emotional PVP in an unscripted context, it wasn't hard to appreciate the scene work between Aabria and Erika, and soon I was back on board -- Suvi actually became my favorite PC. For a goof, I ran some analysis on the transcripts, to see if I could find any fun patterns, but no real shockers in there. (It was a little wild to see that Steel was talking more than Eursulon, though.)
I got bored w/ the annotating after the second arc though, because of course the real thing a writer should study is: how's the audience responding? And there's a much more direct way to figure that out.

“Stocks closed higher today amid brisk trading…” On the radio, television, in print and online, news outlets regularly report trivial daily changes in stock market indices, providing a distinctly slanted perspective on what matters in the economy. Except when they shift suddenly and by a large margin, the daily vagaries of the market are not particularly informative about the overall health of the economy. They are certainly not an example of news most people can use. Only about a third of Americans own stock outside of their retirement accounts and about one in five engage in stock trading on a regular basis. And yet the stock market’s minor fluctuations make up a standard part of economic news coverage.
But what if journalists reported facts more attuned to the lives of everyday Americans? For instance, facts like “in one month, the richest 25,000 Americans saw their wealth grow by an average of nearly $10 million each, compared to just $200 dollars apiece for the bottom 50% of households”? Thanks to innovative new research strategies from leading economists, we now have access to inequality data in much closer to real time. Reporters should be making use of it.
The outsized attention to the Dow Jones and Nasdaq fits with part of a larger issue: class bias in media coverage of the economy. A 2004 analysis of economic coverage in the Los Angeles Times found that journalists “depicted events and problems affecting corporations and investors instead of the general workforce.” While the media landscape has shifted since 2004, with labor becoming a “hot news beat,” this shift alone seems unlikely to correct the media’s bias. This is because, as an influential political science study found, biased reporting comes from the media’s focus on aggregates in a system where growth is not distributed equally; when most gains go to the rich, overall growth is a good indicator of how the wealthy are doing, but a poor indicator of how the non-rich are doing.
In other words, news is shaped by the data on hand. Stock prices are minute-by-minute information. Other economic data, especially about inequality, are less readily available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases data on job growth once a month, and that often requires major corrections. Data on inflation also become available on a monthly basis. Academic studies on inequality use data from the Census Bureau or the Internal Revenue Service, which means information is months or even years out of date before it reaches the public.
But the landscape of economic data is changing. Economists have developed new tools that can track inequality in near real-time:
From U.C. Berkeley, Realtime Inequality provides monthly statistics and even daily projections of income and wealth inequality — all with a fun interactive interface. You can see the latest data and also parse long-term trends. For instance, over the past 20 years, the top .01% percent of earners have seen their real income nearly double, while the bottom 50% of Americans have seen their real income decline.
The State of U.S. Wealth Inequality from the St. Louis Fed provides quarterly data on racial, generational, and educational wealth inequality. The Fed data reminds us, for example, that Black families own about 25 cents for every $1 of white family wealth.
While these sources do not update at the speed of a stock ticker, they represent a massive step forward in the access to more timely, accurate, and complete understanding of economic conditions.
Would more reporting on inequality change public attitudes? That is an open question. A few decades ago, political scientists found intriguing correlations between media coverage and voters’ economic assessments, but more recent analyses suggest that media coverage “does not systematically precede public perceptions of the economy.” Nonetheless, especially given the vast disparities in economic fortune that have developed in recent decades, it is the responsibility of reporters to present data that gives an accurate and informative picture of the economy as it is experienced by most people, not just by those at the top.
And these data matter for all kinds of political judgments, not just public perspectives on the economy. When Americans are considering the Supreme Court’s recent decision on affirmative action, for example, it is useful to know how persistent racial disparities remain in American society; white high school dropouts have a greater median net worth than Black and Hispanic college graduates. Generational, racial, and educational inequality structure the American economy. It’s past time that the media’s coverage reflects that reality, rather than waste Americans’ time on economic trivia of the day.

The breast cancer detection research is legitimately very cool, but the third screenshot is incredibly misinformed about what AI is and how it works, to a degree that I think is actively harmful. I'll take it line by line.
"Analytical ai vs generative ai": these are not actually meaningful or distinct categories. They are use cases. "AI" is essentially a shorthand for a set of techniques that computer scientists call "deep learning" - basically, running certain kinds of calculations on large data sets to create statistical models that can, we hope, make predictions about similar data. This is still a pretty broad field, and there's a lot of different techniques and ways they can be applied - you probably can't just take ChatGPT's model and retrain it to identify breast cancer (and even if you could, you definitely shouldn't). But ALL deep learning is based on the same principles and the same kinds of calculations. It's a bit like the difference between two different 3D game engines - say, Unity and Unreal Engine. There are distinctions between them, sure. But both of them ultimately solve the same problems: that is, rendering objects in a 3D space and simulating physics in realtime. The basic concepts are the same, and they use the same hardware to get there.
"one of these is doing cataloguing and diagnoses and a whole bunch of stuff that's super useful": No! No no no! I'm not saying there aren't very cool, useful ways to use AI for data analysis, but there's nothing inherently good about "analytical" AI. For example, police departments using it for "predictive policing" (effectively just technologically assisted profiling), or facial recognition (which is known to be less accurate for people of color!), or government surveillance, or insurance companies rejecting claims based on AI analysis.
Even in cases that aren't as clear-cut and harmful as these, you have to be really careful. The breast cancer detection system from the original post is legitimately amazing, and has the potential to save so many lives! But it would still be profoundly irresponsible to rely solely on this technology for diagnosis. Remember, AI/deep learning is ultimately just applied statistics. There will always be outliers, false positives and false negatives, and unexpected real-world scenarios that the AI model's training data did not account for. This technology is a tool that has the potential to improve medical experts' ability to make early cancer diagnoses. It is not, itself, a medical expert. And while I don't think anyone reading this post will disagree with that, it's very easy to imagine organizations cutting costs by over-reliance on technology like this, while cutting human experts out of the process. And in the context of cancer detection and treatment, that would absolutely cost people their lives.
"The other is... being sold everywhere as solving problems but insofar as I'm concerned it mostly hallucinates language": Yeah, I do pretty much agree with this! Aside from the false dichotomy of "generative"/"analytical" AI, it IS true that AI is currently an overhyped marketing buzzword, and in that marketing hype context it usually means LLMs (large language models), such as ChatGPT. Investors and venture capitalists are fucking obsessed with this stuff, cramming it into use cases that don't really work and don't really make sense, and driving the rest of us crazy (even me, someone who works in tech and is generally interested in deep learning).
Do I think LLMs are inherently bad and useless? No, not really. There are a number of LLMs designed to write code, for example; these aren't a substitute for knowing how to code, yourself (you must know how to catch mistakes they will inevitably make) but some people do find them useful as a sort of smarter autocomplete, speeding up the more tedious and repetitive parts of writing code. Not revolutionary, rather unremarkable really, but genuinely helpful for devs who choose to use them responsibly. A far cry from AI-generated search results, or a chatbot inexplicably crowbarred into one's weather forecast app, or any of the other bullshit "features" are the hot new gimmick of the week. Nobody asked, nobody wants them, and they don't even work as advertised because they are being used for things LLMs can't fucking do, so please stop making them, we are all begging you.
"Analytical AI is also less resource intensive because it trains its model and that's it": This is COMPLETELY incorrect and makes absolutely no sense. There is no such thing as an "AI" that trains its model and then does nothing else ever. What would even be the point? Remember, an "AI" is just a VERY large and complex statistical prediction model. The larger and more complex, the more resources it will take for a computer to run those calculations and make the predictions it's been trained to make. That's true whether the prediction is "does this tissue sample show early signs of breast cancer?" or "what text should come next after this prompt?" Even if the output is very "simple," it'll still take a lot of computation power to produce that result if the statistical model is large and complex.
I'm not an expert about energy costs, but there are a lot of wild, overblown claims going around about AI energy use that aren't particularly well sourced. A lot of people seem to have the perception that AI uses energy in similar quantities (and with similar wastefulness) as NFTs/crypto, which isn't really true. Other people who are better informed than me have talked about this in more detail! For now, I'll just say that training AI models will always be more resource-intensive than using them, and there are definitely conversations to be had about best practices there... I, personally, am most critical of companies with enormous proprietary models who are not especially transparent about how they are trained or how much they cost to run. It's better for everyone - for the environment AND for science - if we can share this stuff and learn from one another rather than reinventing the wheel each time, at great expense.
No matter what your feelings are on "AI", I encourage everyone to learn a little about how deep learning/machine learning works - there are so many misconceptions flying around in the discourse, and it's not helpful to anyone. It's not some earth-shattering innovation that'll magically make everyone's lives better, and it's not some monstrous threat either - it's just a kind of technology, and it's humans who decide to use it in helpful or harmful ways - or, most realistically, a mixture of both.
