Thousands of people did not just suddenly stop using headphones one day because they felt like it, or because they stopped caring about people with sensory sensitivities like me. No, people stopped using headphones because cell phone manufacturers stopped including headphone jacks in their products.
My sensory-processing issues are a physical element of my disability that would absolutely still exist in a world without capitalism. Like my poor fine motor control and reduced muscle tone, my sensory processing issues debilitate me: there are tasks I simply cannot perform because of how my body is wired, and this makes me different from most other people in ways that are non-negotiable.  Still, my physical disabilities are worsened quite clearly by capitalism: Because large corporations have both a profit motive and a vested interest in reinvesting those profits into advertisements, and because the internet does not receive public financial support, my daily life is bombarded with bright, noisy, flashing, disruptive advertisements, which makes it far more difficult for me to process relevant information and can swiftly bring me to the verge of a meltdown.  If the internet were funded as a public utility and was therefore not sandblasted in ads, I would be less disabled. If my local streets were less plastered in billboards and littered with junk mail advertising chain restaurants, I would be less disabled.
Because companies like Apple financially rely upon consumers replacing their phones on an annual basis (despite how unsustainable and murderously cruel continuing to mine cobalt in Sudan for the production of all these new phones is), I must replace my phone regularly. With an updated phone model I lose my headphone jack and have to adapt to a new operating system and layout, and so my sensory issues and executive functioning challenges are exacerbated.  In a world where phones were produced in order to help human beings function rather than to make money, I would be less disabled.  Thanks to capitalism, I cannot exist in public if I am not purchasing anything. I cannot simply be present in a store, coffee shop, or even public plaza, enjoying my surroundings and taking the sight of other people in. I must contribute to the economy in order to justify it. If the brickwork of a nearby building fascinates me and I crave to feel it against my palms, I have to pretend that I wish to buy it, and be prepared to tell anyone who asks that that’s what I intend to do. I can’t even stand on the corner and feel the sun on my face without worrying my neighbors might find it unusual and send the cops.  As an Autistic person, I often can’t fake being a perpetual consumer well enough. My desire to simply elope around my environment and take in new, interesting sensations registers as suspicious or concerningly mentally ill. And so I am further disabled and excluded from public life.

🎀 Anti-Consumption in Journaling 🎀
-by a stationery lover/blogger, pt. 2
💛 Thank you @maldemer for inspiring this post! 💛
Tumblr media
Love elaborate maximalist journal spreads but want to improve your consumption habits? I’m here to help!
Are you going for a journal with a lot of stickers and washi tape with minimal writing? Is your main goal creating collages with your stationary? Just want a pretty way to showcase your stickers?
Opt for a smaller journal! Reduce the visual space your working with to reach that maximalist/clutterbug 🐞 look with less materials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recommend refillable binder journals, it’s one reusable cover and you can save your old pages by tying them together with ribbon or save them as loose pages.
I recommend sizes A6, A7, M5/A8👇
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Need to Fill a lot of space? Let’s Talk Materials
Keep your packaging! I have a box of cute images and patterns I’ve cut from miscellaneous packaging to glue in my journal. If you’ve bought stationery recently, chances are the packagings are also pretty enough to save!
Free souvenirs! Going somewhere fun? Save a receipt (a favorite of mine to remember snacks I ate, or the date/time), a ticket, a map, a brochure, things you can collect from your outing that come at no cost to you.
Collect from nature! Have a separate book thick enough to press pretty flowers from your yard, your daily walk, the park, your hike, etc. just be careful not to touch something poisonous. You should have an on going collection of pressed flowers you can choose from to fill the space.
Junk mail! Make collages from newspapers, envelopes, flyers. Cut the individual letters to use or full words to string together a poem. Or cut fun shapes to make art.
Doodles! Not an artist? That’s okay! Make your doodles with cheap color pencils, ball point pens, crayons for texture! Messy is cute and endearing!
Thrifting! So many books for cheap from cooking, nature, poetry, novels, children’s books. Get your scissors and start snipping! Look for trinkets like buttons, ribbons, fabric scraps, small beads that you can glue
Creating visual weight! Chances are you have different page styles lying around, mix patterns, textures, colors. Is your journal dotted? Glue sections of graph, blank, or line paper to create visual interest. Received a gift lately? Tissue paper looks cute!
When buying stationery, buy from small artists when you can! Many artists have online shops and/or physical markets. It may be pricier than buying from companies, but you can guarantee the art/design is not stolen, and that the artist is being paid fairly for their work.
I went ahead and created a journal spread using some of the advice above. This is pocket journal with everything being pulled from scrap paper, junk mail, and some markers. Ignoring that I completely forgot what cucumbers looked like for a hot minute:
Here’s my journal spread!

The Secret to Winning Elections is Community, Which is Why Sprawl Suburbs Are Terrible
Yeah, the Dems screwed up the 2024 election in many ways - a great candidate but lackluster messaging, no clarity, a weird focus on palling around with Never Trumper Republicans, and a whiffed response to Gaza.
But most of all, it was the disconnect between the increasingly gerontocratic Democratic establishment and the electorate.
youtube
Adam Conover identifies something really important in this video: As postwar America (particularly post-Reagan) atomized into sprawl suburbia, the organizations that were once the backbone of communities across the nation, such as unions, service clubs and organizations, American Legion branches, women’s groups and the like, slowly disappeared. Heck, even company bowling and softball leagues are rare today.
People used to live close to their work or at least in transit distance (lots of folks rode bikes during WWII to save on gasoline, too.). This meant they lived closer to co-workers, too.
At one point in the not too distant past, union halls had bars and dancefloors and functions where things were cheap for members. They provided vital third spaces. These organizations had national memberships in the tens and hundreds of thousands, and were a political force.
Candidates would come to your town to talk to your branch of the AFL-CIO or the VFW or the Women’s Trade Union League and get direct feedback on what was important - and the organizations would agree to back candidates or legislation.
Now it’s left unsaid in Conover’s video, but the atomization of communities from the dismantling of American manufacturing and Reagan-era union-busting was also accelerated by the physical atomization of communities into sprawl suburbia.
Sprawl isn’t organized around anything. It’s intentionally harder to get anywhere. You need a car to do anything.
It’s illegal to have shops or corner stores or any sort of third place in walking distance, whereas traditional working class neighborhoods had pubs and taverns and barber shops and coffee shops close by.
More importantly, your neighbors likely don’t work for the same company as you. It’s entirely possible to go years without knowing their names. You’re all just living in your little individual bubbles.
This is what makes political organizing more difficult in the 2020s.
Conover points out that this loss of connection between communities and the establishment Democratic party has reduced things to a transactional relationship - “send us $5” emails, texts and junk mail - and bringing in out-of-state college kids to knock on doors, vs someone from your block association that you know inviting you to an event in someone’s home.
Worse, it enabled the Republicans to insert themselves into those gaps, through once-benevolent organizations like the NRA.
The next four years are going to be tough, but it’s also an opportunity to lean on the Democrats (and support grassroots candidates who don’t take PAC money) to remember how to do retail politics again.

Junk Mail Letters
Mail art started in the late 1950’s pioneered by Dadaists and Italian Futurists, consists of collaged post cards and letters, rubber stamps and bedazzled envelopes.  The main, central trait is that mail art used the postal service - was mailed to other people/artists.  One core person to contemporary mail art is Ray Johnson, who in the 50’s sent “moticos”, collages which sometimes had instructions.  These letters were supposed to be responded to, creating a correspondence chain.
However, its 2023, and post is no longer the primary form of long-form communication: digital messaging is.  With the 21st century, as email and texting becoming more accessible, and with the occurrence of the Global Financial Crisis spanning 2007-2009, the total domestic letters the Australian post has decreased by 65% by 2020/21, and it hasn’t up-ticked in the past two years, especially with the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the economic instability caused by quarantining and non-essential retail closer, the postal service also reduced mail being sent to one another.
I grew up within the declining of postal mail, with the only mail in my childhood (from memory) was Christmas cards and my parents bills, but not really correspondence between family and friends.  Why would you, when you can just call them, or text them?  For a while, I didn’t think about this.  It was just how life is.  But recently, I have been religiously checking my mail, because I’m anticipating a document that is supposed to be mailed to be.  And because I was checking the mail religiously, I noticed the mundanity of mail.  Bills, junk mail, and housing marketing flyers.  It dawned on me; mail, the thing one thinks of when it comes to communication between people on an intimate level, doesn’t happen anymore.  And so, this birthed Junk Mail Letters.
Tumblr media
Junk Mail Letters is a mail art project, in which each week, for 5-10 weeks, envelopes made from the pages of junk mail are dropped into the mail boxes of my neighbourhood, each holding a letter with a positive message.  This is to discuss the loss of connection and community which can be gained through the physical letter. The envelopes plays a slightly different role: the role of subversion. Junk mail is not something people expect to enjoy and like, so to use it to hold a positive message subverts expectations.
Mail, in some ways, is more intimate and connected to people than digital messaging is. Letters are written (or printed, if you own a printer) with the goal of talking about your life and checking in on other people, hand-crafted and hand-folded.  Whether its mail about yourself, or a surprise gift to someone else, the touch of a hand made them, and you can touch the letter yourself, hold it for as long as possible.  Mail holds connection through touch, from its physicality.  You can’t touch an individual text, its just the screen of the phone, with that spot touched also touching a word document, YouTube, this Tumblr post.  Mail is impactful though its physicality.

Why May You Choose to Opt-Out of Direct Mail Marketing?
Direct mail marketing is a powerful tool used by businesses to engage customers and drive conversions. However, not everyone is eager to receive promotional materials through their mailbox. Understanding why someone may choose to opt out of direct mail marketing helps marketers improve their targeting and respect consumer preferences.
Tumblr media
1. Privacy Concerns
One of the main reasons consumers opt out is concern over data privacy. Many individuals are wary about how companies collect and use their personal information, such as addresses and buying habits. When people feel their privacy is compromised, they're more likely to unsubscribe from future mailings.
2. Environmental Impact
Environmental consciousness plays a significant role. Many individuals opt out of direct mail to reduce paper waste, conserve natural resources, and lessen carbon footprints. Sustainable practices are increasingly important in consumer decision-making.
3. Clutter and Inconvenience
Physical mail can become overwhelming. Junk mail and irrelevant promotions contribute to mailbox clutter. For consumers who receive a high volume of unsolicited mail, opting out becomes a way to simplify and declutter their lives.
4. Lack of Personalization
Generic and poorly targeted mail often leads to disengagement. When recipients feel like they are just another name on a mailing list, the material is more likely to be discarded. Poor personalization can drive consumers to opt out permanently.
5. Digital Preferences
In a digital-first world, many consumers prefer emails, apps, and social media for communication. These channels are often faster, more interactive, and easier to manage than physical mail. Opting out of direct mail reflects a broader shift toward digital communication.
6. Security Risks
Some people worry that physical mail could be intercepted or stolen, especially when it contains personal offers or sensitive information. Opting out reduces the risk of mail fraud or identity theft.
7. Lack of Relevance
Poor targeting results in consumers receiving offers for products or services they don't need. If businesses fail to segment and personalize correctly, recipients may see no value in the content and choose to opt out.
8. No Clear Value Proposition
When direct mail doesn’t clearly communicate its benefit or call-to-action, it often gets ignored. Consumers are more likely to disengage when they don’t see what’s in it for them.
9. Negative Past Experiences
If someone previously responded to a direct mail offer that led to spammy follow-ups, poor customer service, or unwanted solicitations, they might choose to avoid all future mailings.
10. Regulatory and Opt-Out Tools
Consumers now have easier access to opt-out services like the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service (MPS) or national do-not-mail registries. These tools empower them to control their marketing exposure.
Conclusion
Opting out of direct mail marketing is often a personal decision driven by privacy concerns, preferences, or values. For marketers, it highlights the need for respectful, targeted, and relevant communication. Companies that offer easy opt-out processes and align campaigns with customer values are more likely to build lasting trust.

How to Select Mail Forwarding Services that Match Your Requirements
Selecting the right mail forwarding service is crucial whether you are a business owner, a frequent traveler, or simply someone looking to manage their mail more efficiently. The right service can ensure your important letters, parcels, and documents reach you no matter where you are. However, with numerous mail forwarding services available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one will suit your needs best. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to select mail forwarding services that match your requirements.
Tumblr media
1. Understand Your Needs
The first and most important step in selecting a mail forwarding service is understanding what you need. Different services offer different features, and not all may be relevant to you. Consider the following scenarios:
Frequent Traveler: If you travel a lot, you will need a service that allows you to receive mail from anywhere in the world and have it forwarded to your current location. Look for international shipping options.
Remote Business Owner: If you're running a business from a different location, a mail forwarding service can help you maintain a business presence in a specific area. You'll want features such as package scanning, check depositing, and digital access to physical mail.
Full-time RVer/Expat: If you live on the road or abroad, you will need a service that not only forwards your mail but also provides digital scanning so you can check your mail online before deciding what to forward.
Occasional User: If you only need mail forwarding occasionally, such as when you're on vacation, you may prefer a service that offers flexible pricing plans for temporary forwarding.
2. Check for Service Features
Each mail forwarding service offers a unique set of features, so it’s important to ensure the one you choose has the capabilities that align with your requirements. Here are some key features to look for:
Mail Scanning and Digital Access: Many services offer the option to scan envelopes and provide images of your mail through an online portal. This is especially useful if you want to see what your mail is before forwarding it.
Package Forwarding: If you frequently receive packages, ensure the service can forward packages from courier services like UPS, FedEx, and DHL in addition to regular mail.
Check Depositing: Some mail forwarding services offer check depositing as a feature, which is highly beneficial for businesses that receive payments via mail.
Junk Mail Filtering: Some services offer junk mail filtering, so you’re not overwhelmed by unnecessary mail. This can save you money on forwarding costs and reduce clutter.
Storage and Consolidation: The ability to store and consolidate multiple items before shipping them to you can save you money on shipping costs, especially when dealing with international forwarding.
Shredding and Recycling: Look for a service that offers shredding of sensitive documents or recycling of unwanted mail, which can help protect your personal information and reduce waste.
3. Pricing and Plans
Mail forwarding services can range significantly in price depending on the features offered and the frequency of forwarding. Here’s how to evaluate the cost:
Monthly vs. Annual Pricing: Many services offer both monthly and annual pricing plans. If you need long-term service, opting for an annual plan may save you money.
Pay-As-You-Go Options: If you don’t need regular mail forwarding, a pay-as-you-go service might be more cost-effective. You’ll only pay for the times you actually need your mail forwarded or packages shipped.
Forwarding Fees: Keep in mind that in addition to the subscription fee, many services charge for the actual forwarding of mail. Compare rates for shipping packages, and consider whether the service charges extra for international forwarding.
Additional Fees: Be aware of extra charges such as scanning fees, storage fees, or fees for shredding and recycling. These small costs can add up over time, so make sure you understand all potential fees before committing.
4. International Shipping Options
If you live abroad or travel frequently outside your home country, international shipping options will be a critical factor in your decision-making process. Here’s what to look for:
Global Coverage: Ensure the mail forwarding service ships to your location. Some services only offer domestic forwarding, while others provide international shipping but charge higher fees.
Customs and Duties: International forwarding can come with customs and duties charges. Make sure the service offers transparency on these costs and provides support for dealing with customs paperwork.
Speed of Delivery: If timely delivery is important, check the service’s shipping times. Some companies offer express shipping options for a premium, while others may only provide standard shipping which can take longer.
5. Privacy and Security
Mail contains sensitive personal and financial information, so it's important to choose a service that prioritizes privacy and security. Look for the following:
Encryption and Secure Online Access: Ensure the service has secure online portals with encrypted access, so your personal data and mail content are protected.
Regulated Mail Handling: Mail forwarding companies should comply with postal regulations, such as the U.S. Postal Service Form 1583, which authorizes them to receive mail on your behalf. This ensures the service is legitimate and compliant with federal regulations.
Shredding of Sensitive Documents: If your mail contains sensitive information, such as credit card statements or tax documents, make sure the service offers secure shredding of unwanted mail to prevent identity theft.
6. Customer Support
Quality customer support can make a huge difference, especially if issues arise with your mail. Here’s what to consider:
Availability: Make sure the service offers customer support during hours that are convenient for your time zone, especially if you’re living abroad.
Support Channels: Check if they offer multiple ways to contact support, such as phone, email, live chat, or a ticketing system. The more options, the better.
Response Times: Look for services with a reputation for prompt and helpful customer support. Reading customer reviews can give you an idea of how responsive the service is when problems arise.
7. Ease of Use
The service you choose should be easy to set up and manage. Here are some factors to consider:
User Interface: The online portal or app should be intuitive and user-friendly. You’ll want to easily view scanned mail, request forwarding, or manage other features.
Mobile Access: Check if the service offers a mobile app or mobile-optimized website. This will be especially important if you need to access your mail while on the go.
Set-Up Process: Make sure the setup process is straightforward. Some services require additional forms or notary work (like the USPS Form 1583), so ensure you’re aware of all the steps involved in getting started.
8. Reputation and Reviews
Before committing to a mail forwarding service, do some research on its reputation. Customer reviews can provide valuable insight into the reliability and performance of the service. Here’s what to look for:
Positive Reviews: Look for services with consistently positive reviews regarding timely deliveries, reliability, and customer service.
Longevity: Established services with many years of operation tend to be more reliable and trustworthy than newer, unproven companies.
Ratings on Review Platforms: Check websites like Trustpilot, Google Reviews, or the Better Business Bureau for ratings and complaints. Avoid services with numerous unresolved issues or complaints related to lost or mishandled mail.
9. Test the Service
If you’re uncertain which service to choose, you can always test a few options. Many services offer a trial period or a short-term plan, allowing you to try them out before committing to a long-term contract.
Conclusion
Choosing the right mail forwarding service requires careful consideration of your unique needs, the features of the service, pricing, and the company’s reputation. By thoroughly researching your options and understanding what you need, you can ensure your mail is handled securely and efficiently, no matter where life takes you. Whether you're a digital nomad, a business owner, or simply someone looking for more control over your mail, the right service can make all the difference.

Lockdown, agoraphobia, recovery
So I’ve suffered from depression since I was 14, and anxiety and panic attacks since I was 18, but later in my adult life I started dealing with OCD. Like real OCD. Things like compulsive hand washing, not wanting to touch surfaces like door knobs or elevator buttons, checking the stove and door locks 20 times before going to bed, obsessive research on plane crashes, lasers, ticks…fun stuff. But covid realllllly took everything to the next level. I never understood agoraphobia until I was in the middle of a full blown mental health crisis. From November 2020 to March 2021, I did not go outside. I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment on the second floor with my wife and our infant daughter. Our cat that we’d had our entire relationship died from a very aggressive form of cancer one month after our daughter was born. It was by far the hardest month of my life.
It really felt like something broke that year. I don’t know what it was or why it manifested in agoraphobia, but when I say I didn’t go outside for 5 months I mean that very literally. I did not go to the store. I did not check the mail or walk the trash to the dumpster. I didn’t even step out onto the balcony for some fresh air because the anxiety was that overwhelming. My body physically did. not. go. outside. I was too afraid to even go into the second bedroom, which was full of junk, and especially the second bathroom, where Zelda died. I was working from home, and my entire world had been reduced down to a living room and a bedroom. I felt like I had died, like I was stuck in some sick form of purgatory. I had an entire past behind me, a life lived, friends that I could no longer see. But I did not feel like I had a future. The suicidal ideation got really bad. I hit rock bottom and felt like there was absolutely no hope in the world, no hope for me. It was the darkest place I’ve ever been.
It took years of work, therapy, and lots of prozac to recover from that level of agoraphobia, and while I’m not quite out of it yet (unfamiliar places still give me anxiety), I feel like I’m very close to cured. Honestly, working at SP was a huge part of that. I remember just less than a year ago thinking there was no way I could ever get a job that wasn’t fully remote, that would require me to leave the house. I even turned the job down initially, but K convinced me to change my mind. And bit by bit over this last year, I have continued to recover. I don’t even recognize myself from a year ago, and I mean that in the best possible way.
I’m just…really really happy lately. Happier than I’ve been in a long time, and more social than I’ve been in about 10 years. Looking back, coming here was such a good decision, and it scares the hell out of me that I almost made the wrong choice. There are so many amazing people here I never would have met, and I’m so excited to slowly get to know them better.

The Ultimate Guide to Secure Document Shredding
In an era where data security is paramount, the importance of secure document shredding cannot be overstated. Whether you're a business handling sensitive customer information or an individual safeguarding personal data, proper document disposal is critical in preventing identity theft and maintaining privacy. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the essentials of secure document shredding, offering valuable insights and tips to ensure your information stays out of the wrong hands.
Understanding the Need for Secure Document Shredding: Identity theft and data breaches are on the rise, making it imperative to adopt secure document shredding practices. Discarding documents without proper destruction exposes you to the risk of unauthorized access, leading to potential financial and reputational damage. By understanding the need for secure document shredding, you take the first step toward safeguarding sensitive information.
Types of Documents to Shred: Identifying which documents to shred is crucial. While it may seem obvious to shred financial statements and legal documents, other seemingly innocuous items, such as junk mail with personal information or expired identification cards, can also pose risks. Create a list of documents containing sensitive information and ensure they are shredded regularly.
Choosing the Right Shredder: Investing in a quality shredder is key to effective document destruction. Cross-cut or micro-cut shredders are recommended over strip-cut models, as they produce smaller, more secure particles. Consider the volume of documents you need to shred and choose a shredder with a capacity that meets your requirements.
Developing a Shredding Routine: Establishing a consistent shredding routine is essential for maintaining document security. Set a schedule for regular shredding, whether it's a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. This proactive approach ensures that sensitive documents are promptly disposed of, reducing the risk of accidental exposure.
Secure Storage Before Shredding: Prior to shredding, it's crucial to securely store documents in designated containers. Use lockable bins or cabinets to prevent unauthorized access. This step is particularly important for businesses handling confidential client information. Implement a clear organizational system to streamline the shredding process.
Shredding Digital Documents: In today's digital age, physical documents are not the only concern. Ensure that digital documents are securely deleted using appropriate software before disposal. This includes wiping data from electronic devices, such as hard drives and USB drives, to prevent data recovery.
Recycling Shredded Material: Once documents are shredded, consider the responsible disposal of the resulting waste. Shredded paper can often be recycled, contributing to environmental sustainability. Check local recycling guidelines and partner with reputable recycling services to properly dispose of shredded material.
Legal Compliance: Stay informed about data protection laws and regulations applicable to your region or industry. Compliance with these standards is crucial for businesses and individuals alike. Ensure that your document shredding practices align with legal requirements to avoid potential penalties and legal consequences.
Conclusion:
The ultimate guide to secure document shredding underscores the importance of proactive measures in protecting sensitive information. By understanding the need for secure shredding, identifying the types of documents to shred, investing in the right equipment, establishing a routine, and staying legally compliant, you can create a robust system that safeguards your data and contributes to a more secure environment. Implement these practices, and you'll be well on your way to ensuring that your confidential information remains confidential.

Occasionally, or pretty much all the time, the two worry about one another's safety, which usually ends up with the two often arguing about what's best, though thankfully, the two of them make up rather quickly. Terry Weber- in a similar vein, Terry and Kris' relationship started when they met as children, though a bit less awkward than as adults. While the two of them do care about each other and try to spend time together, its often conflicted by the fact that the two can't really find any common ground. Despite these struggles, the two of them both respect one another, and overtime do start to notice the little things they have in common. Philomena Hawthorne- Similar to Dylan and Terry, both Kris and Philomena's' relationship started in their childhood. To say that the two are as different as night and day would be an understatement, as both of them have different ways of thinking, saying, and doing things that often leave both equally flabbergasted on how they work.
