Oh I am big mad. So two days ago I broke my phone, and yesterday I took it to get the screen replaced. It cost a fortune but at least I had a phone again, and then the guy got me to log him in so he could "get the model number" of the phone. And then he upsold me on a new case.
And then I got home and realised that the case is for a slightly different type of phone than the one I have and doesn't fit right (the headphone jack is covered and the volume buttons are off centre so they don't work right). I'm pretty sure he knew it was wrong because he gave me a tiny discount without really explaining why (I thought it was the aforementioned fortune I'd already spent) and kind of rushed me out. So I have to take it back today.
And then this morning I checked my email and I had a message... replying to a google review I left for a business? I don't LEAVE google reviews so this was pretty surprising. And it turns out that while this asshole was messing around on my phone, he left himself a five fucking star review on Google. And the irony is I probably wouldn't have even realised if no one had replied to it.
Now the good news is that if they give me a hard time about refunding the phone case, I am fully going to use this as leverage against them. But it's just SO SHADY and I'm extremely furious.

The Short Patreon Breakdown
Basic version of this post, for people with no attention span. For details on each of these points, please see the original post.
1. The iOS processing fees are a smokescreen covering up the actual devastating changes that Patreon is forcing creators into—including doing away with the two billing models used by most of the highest-earning creators on the platform, regardless of the impact this will have on their livelihood.
2. Patreon is not going to change course for any reason. This is set in stone. CEO Jack Conte himself has been having one-on-one meetings and calls with the platform's top earners, and clearly has no interest in their actual grievances or how their businesses operate—only in getting them to stop complaining.
3. Patreon has offered no proof of their claims that the iOS app is responsible for 40 percent of the engagement on the platform—and also refuse to define what "engagement" means. Staff rebuff all requests for detailed analytics or data on the revenue share coming from the app, but did not refute the possibility that dismissing an app notification counted as "engagement."
4. Patreon does not have a refund policy in place to work with Apple in order to protect creators from malicious chargebacks, and has given no indication of any intent to work with Apple to shorten the time it takes for funds from iOS purchases to be paid out to creators—which is currently 75 days.
5. Patreon's own graphics meant to explain why this is necessary and how the new fees work are not correct: the fee structure graphic features a copying error that results in incorrect math, and adding together everything on the bar graph showing the daily active users by avenue of access comes to a total of 103 percent. They are woefully unprepared to share this information, and are putting it on us for "not understanding."
6. Patreon refuses to offer any promises to 18+ creators that they will not be removed from the app in order to adhere to Apple's content guidelines, instead only saying they currently have no plans to remove us from the app. Questioning this was met with a reminder that they've had to change the TOS for 18+ creators before.
7. All the features Patreon is insisting are integral for creator growth are inaccessible to 18+ creators, and questions about this were either dismissed, redirected, or ignored. 18+ creators can't even be found on either app, but we're being forced to cater to iOS' terms anyway, with claims that it's because all creators need the app in order to grow. Even though we can't utilize it.
8. Patreon's iOS app is currently* in violation of Apple's guidelines for app ratings; staff did not state any intention to become compliant by raising the app's rating as needed to maintain their 18+ creator community, only declaring that they're "exploring options." Per Apple's guidelines, the "options" are to either raise the rating to 17+, cutting off access for the wealthy teenagers with iPhones to which the platform is so dedicated they'll kneecap their top earner in order to court, or kick all 18+ creators off the platform. (This includes horror, true crime, health, trauma recovery, and more, not just sexual content.) *Current as of August 18, 2024.
Do not let the 30 percent App Store fee distract you from what's really going on here. Patreon is crippling a huge portion of their creators, including a horde of their top earners—and the single most profitable creator on the entire platform—and offering no legitimate reasons why. The amount of money they're losing from these creators restructuring or leaving altogether totals in the millions within a single month of activity. This isn't even about money, it's about something else—and there's no way to know what, because Patreon is giving us nothing.

the great stop light switch fiasco of 2024 continues
after making an order for a new switch with O'Reilly's and waiting till the day they said it would arrive, I still hadn't received the part nor heard anything from store. As it turned out, according to what an employee saw in the electronixlc records, the part had been shipped to somewhere and then returned to somewhere for no apparent reason without ever reaching the local store. the order had been canceled and the money I already paid hadn't been refunded, again, without any apparent reason.
my mom heard about all of this and said, "so you won't be going to O'Reilly's anymore, right?" I am now getting the part through Napa at a price $30 greater, but in the sense that I'm taking my business elsewhere, what am I even doing? when people suggest that you're "voting" with your dollars, doesn't this suppose at least some clarity? an incumbent has a track record and new candidate has a history and policy proposals. no matter how jaded you feel about electoral politics, even a decision to opt out can still be based on things you can see. In this metaphorical case, I would frankly prefer to "vote" for the cheaper option but that one is barred to me for reasons I can't yet explain. And the more expensive option is more expensive for reasons that are equally obscure. this is the same part, same manufacturer. I can only tell you that I am getting the thing I need from this store because they haven't balked or reneged yet, not that I prefer this store and their service or that I prefer this manufacturer's make of this part.
the upstream decision of this whole series of consequences was choosing to buy the car I did and by chance buying a specific iteration of that model's year. so I chose to buy a 2015 Sienna and by doing so happened to also buy a Panasonic 5-pin stop light switch. the metaphor could be extended hear by comparing the specific switch to a cabinet pick, maybe. but whereas a politician would be responsible for their cabinet picks (and Toyota would be responsible for what happens on the production line), there's no one directly responsible for the switch in my car futzing out or for the unpopularity of this make of switch. on this problem I have no say except I guess consumer complaint, which Toyota has little incentive to pay attention to because we're talking about a used car of a previous gen.
point being, this is a cut and dry consumer good we're talking about here, not even something like an education, and already the concept of a market regulated and judged by consumers is strained. I don't know what the rejoinder to my grousing would be. maybe that I do have the financial power to express my choice but previous choices inevitably limit future options? That makes sense, but in the case of a car, who is checking the availability of every part in the complex machine called "car"? how few people are there "voting" in that sense and how constrained are all of us in a market? hypothetically you can even build a car nearly from scratch, but this is the metaphorical equivalent of running a campaign for a district of one person.

ACE Holdings Bhd: RM814 Million Scam
In April 2019, the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) told the public that ACE Holdings Bhd had issued corrective disclosures on 1 April 2019 after the sections the watchdog had issued on 11 December 2018.
As a result, ACE Holdings Bhd aka ACE Group had to issue an unconditional redemption offer to all investors who had placed private investments between PPM 2015 and 2018.

It seems ACE Holdings BHD has hired the services of a Reputation Agency to try and suppress this page. Yesterday, they filed a Copyright Notice with Google to take down this link from Google’s search engines.

Since this is a critical review and a newsworthy story, ACE Holdings is not aware that this falls under the fair usage policy of the copyright law. Note that ACE Holdings Bhd aka ACE Group had raised RM814 million during this period and now had to return the entire sum to the investors.
The Securities Commission Malaysia released a notification about this matter on 4 April 2019 for the investors. At the time, they had 21 days to submit their application to get the refund.
Also, SC had recommended the investors to seek professional financial advice in case they had any doubt or confusion regarding the matter.
Why Did ACE Holdings BHD (ACE Group) Get Sanctioned?
The SC had sanctioned the private investment firm for using false and misleading statements while promoting its fund-raising projects.
For example, the company used to market one of its fund-raising projects as “ACE Credit Sdn Bhd offers potential subscribers a stable investment in the consumer credit industry with security dividends from an increasing cash flow.”
Their promotion also claimed that it had a business model which generates recurring income with constant growth and a “rising standard of living”.
ACE Holdings Bhd aka ACE Group modified it to “AHB provides investors with a unique investment opportunity in the consumer credit industry”.
ACE Holdings Bhd had been trying to acquire Apex Equity in 2018-19 and in February 2019, the SC granted a conditional approval for the proposed merger between Mercury Securities Sdn Bhd and Apex Equity.
What was the condition for this approval? The SC wanted ACE Investment Bank Ltd to exit the deal. It was a subsidiary of ACE Holdings Bhd which is now popular as ACE Group.
Furthermore, ACE Investment Bank Ltd didn’t agree to these terms. It was unclear if the SC had explained the reason why they imposed such a specific condition onto the deal.
The Aftermath:
Apart from the changes I mentioned above, ACE Holding Berhad also disclosed that its present authorized and paid up share capital was at 50 million ordinary shares of RM1 each. Prior to the sanctions, they used to claim the figure was 100 million ordinary shares of RM1 each.
Also, the company changed a statement for PPM 2018 to reflect the raising of funds exceeding RM250 million under PPM 2016.
Furthermore, they used to claim that they had raised funds for investment in Islamic financial products such as Islamic capital market activities, Islamic pre-IPO investments and the Islamic credit industry.
In reality, they used RM142.47 million for shares, RM64.7 million for internal financing, RM33.72 million for property, RM79.95 million for retail financing and RM423.42 million for corporate financing.
They didn’t use the funds for what they had raised them.

The Group Chairman of ACE Holdings Bhd is Ybhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting. Also, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi Bin Haji Abdul Razak is the Eminent Shareholder of ACE Group.

Fun fact : I once try to go by myself at a second hand shop and they gave me the cold shoulder and refused to take my clothes. Secondhand shops totally lost the plot of their initial purpose anyways. I get they're no depot and that they have to watch out the quantity of clothes in their inventory but I hardly had 2 or 3 items to give them and they didn't even bother looking at them.... They explained to me they resorted to their own network whenever they needed a restock.... Secondhand shops are NOT to give but to BUY & make money through business partnerships with other companies/intermediated. Avoiding clothes waste from the rootbase (customers) is a detail. I learned it the hard way.
