Oshi No Ko Episode 12 Review - Season 2 Is Here

Is it okay for me to review the second season of Oshi no Ko despite me not reviewing the show episodically last year? I have a whole review of the first season, which you can click here. I think it’s okay for me to review it episodically, right? Right?

Oshi no Ko isn’t the most perfect show, but I still like it because it gives a lot of insight to the Japanese entertainment industry, even if it doesn’t do it all that well. Season 1 showed off a glimpse of the idol industry and even how the acting industry goes. For Season 2, it dives right into another big part of an entertainment industry: stage plays. Given that stage plays are super popular in Japan right now, I think a good dive into what they’re like is good for those unfamiliar with the industry like me! They have their own production rules and customs, so it’s interesting to see how different the industry is from film acting.

Because they’re essentially plays, good acting is necessary, hence why up and coming stars of Lala Lai and other rising stars are casted—Aqua is casted too! While it’s nice to see them rehearsing for their roles, I would’ve liked to see them audition for the roles, but I guess I’m asking for too much.

I think what caught my attention the most is the fact it tells a rather cruel truth about adaptations: they will never be faithful and that sometimes, adaptations are more marketing tactics that promote the original source material. Sometimes, characters or scenes must be sacrificed for time constraints. It sucks because I’ve seen adaptations where they butcher a scene or character so bad. Look at the 90’s Sailor Moon. I’m sure some manga fans absolutely hate how Ikuhara changed Rei from stoic and wary of men to being boy-crazy and tsundere. Heck, I’ve seen some Demon Slayer fans upset that Zenitsu’s portrayal is very exaggerated compared to how he is written in the manga with some scenes with him and Nezuko getting cut out too. So, I get Akane’s frustrations with a loose adaptation of the source material. I’m sure that there are those who want to see their favorite characters be portrayed with how they’re supposed to be and not a shadow of their former selves. I’m not surprised that Abiko-sensei wanted to change the entire script because it would hurt to have your babies be butchered—like how Kichijouji-sensei suffered from the terrible adaptation of Sweet Today.

There’s also an introduction to a lot of new characters in addition to returning cast. Other than Aqua, Kana, Akane, Melt and Kichijouji-sensei, there’s Taiki Himekawa, the star of Lala Lai, who plays the MC Blade. There’s Sakuya who plays the green guy. There’s also GOA, a scriptwriter and Kindaichi. To be honest, I hope I can keep up with who is who. Oh, and there’s Ruby, but she only appears briefly and is not that important right now.

What I like is that the visuals have improved because the episode likes to show off the visuals of the characters that the actors will play. The acting with Taiki and Kana was really good because it shows that acting is important in a stage play and that good actors need to keep up with each other. However, I do feel bad for Akane in the sense that her role doesn’t allow her to shine as she’s a method actor and Princess Saya’s role is a small one.

I guess my only gripe is the first 3-5 minutes of introducing Tokyo Blade. Was that necessary? I get that the visuals are nice, but all it did was introduce the characters and actors, whom you can see in the middle. Is that a part of stage play culture or is it just Daga Kobo flexing?

The opening visuals are pretty nice! The song may be a bit of a downgrade from YOASOBI’s Idol, but it’s still pretty catchy. I love the visuals from how Aqua and Ruby take off their ‘masks’ to reveal their past selves, Goro and Sarina.

Anyways, I’m excited to see what this arc has to offer! I also hope there will be more Aqua screen time because I am an Aqua fan—I don’t care what you think of me. I like Aqua! I want him to find what he needs to in this arc! Other than me gushing over Aqua, I do think this was a good introduction to the Tokyo Blade arc. What are your thoughts on the second season?

Possible account update

(So... I've had this thought cross my mind recently, and I wanted to share it here. Recently, there have been two characters in the Digimon franchise that I've grown to like. The characters are Rei Katsura and, of course, Maki Himekawa. I'll see how I can re-write their backstories while keeping elements of their canon because my idea is simple: I may turn this account into a multi-muse account to properly write as Rei and Maki. However, if I get informed by one of my mutuals that it would be better to stay as Ken, then I'll either create a new multi-muse to write as Rei and Maki or just create new blogs for them. Let’s do another week of Luke!

It’s strange to me that fans refer to Luke as “sunshine boy” since he spends most of the story suffering alone, dressing goth, and very much not liking the sunshine. The most interesting thing about his story is that he takes in pain and sadness in order to remain on the “light side” of the Force. If he had denied his dark feelings through either discipline or optimism, he never would have been so brave, bold, and selflessly loving.

Personally I believe that the most heartbreaking similarity between Luke and Padme is not just that they play a similar role in Anakin’s two arcs, but that they both suffer from depression. Even in Luke’s most innocent appearance, A New Hope, we get a glimpse of the ache within his heart in the Binary Sunset theme (listen at 2:14 on this soundtrack). This sad song rises to an uplifting climax, then falls with no resolution -- a beautiful and accurate representation of the uneven, relentless way depression can feel.

Another, subtler musical hint of the root of Luke’s sadness is in his theme song, which is also the main title theme of every SW movie. No other song in Star Wars is more brassy, heroic, and shimmering. But the four notes that resolve the first part of the melody (listen at 0:14 on this soundtrack) are none other than the “Dies irae,” the musical shorthand for death! In the context of A New Hope, this reference symbolizes Luke’s triumph over the Death Star. But in the context of Luke’s entire story, the “Dies irae” built into his theme symbolizes the multiple tragedies that haunt him and motivate his decisions. The losses of Owen, Beru, and Obi-Wan in the first movie set Luke up to devote himself entirely to the Rebellion. Fear of losing Han and Leia in the second movie causes Luke to abandon his Jedi teachers’ path for him. And finally, in the third movie, Luke desperately tries but fails to save his father from death. We see Luke’s loneliness and grief at Anakin’s funeral, and I think it’s telling that even at the final celebration Luke breaks away to linger, for a moment, with the ghosts.

The Last Jedi deals more directly with Luke’s depression, as do several comics, including this one. I appreciate these stories, since I relate far more to a struggling hero than a “sunshine boy.”

And another thing! Sometimes when fans associate Luke with the sun, they also associate Leia with the moon. This strikes me as rather tacky, since Leia’s planet was blown up by the Death Star, which was famously mistaken for a moon.

I know people love the sun-and-moon imagery, but I think it’s a little boring and regressive to give Leia the moon just because she’s dark-haired and feminine, and Luke vice-versa. If anything, Leia should have the sun, since she symbolizes the “far bright center of the universe.” Leia is the one at the center of the goodguys’ military and political power, and, more to the point of this post, Leia is the one who conceals her own dark emotions for the good of the group.

And Luke should have the moon. Every significant Force-user he meets is more powerful than he is (Obi-Wan, Yoda, Palpatine, Vader, Kylo, and Rey); his talent is reflecting their powers back at them, as a moon reflects a star. In Return of the Jedi, he throws away his own weapon to expose Palpatine’s dishonorable viciousness and Vader’s protective mercy. In The Last Jedi, he appears in front of Kylo to allow his nephew’s own obsession to distract him -- and again Luke does not bear his own weapon, but his father’s.

Also, as stated above, he’s the goth!

Digimon for the fandom meme

The first character I first fell in love with: Mimi Tachikawa from Adventure. I like people who can speak their mind, even if it doesn't make sense half the time. She was also the one who'd first say 'let's stop for now' of the group.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: To be honest? I'm not sure, though I might like Taiki and Taigeru if I watched Xros Wars/Fusion. I need to sit down and do that, since I fell out of interest with Digimon when it first aired.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I don't like Maki Himekawa, mainly because it felt like they had no idea what to do with her throughout the entire 6 movies.

The character I love that everyone else hates: Daisuke Motomiya, mainly because I always felt he got shat on too much. Also, I always headcanon that V-mon/Veemon is basically Sonic in all but name.

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Yoshino Fujieda, minly because I felt she was a bit too forceful with Masaru/Marcus Daimon in the series. That, and I felt her main colour should have been green over pink.

The character I would totally smooch: Mimi Tachikawa. Natch.

The character I’d want to be like: I wouldn't mind trying to be Tachi Yagami.

The character I’d slap: Akihiro Kurata, if only because his fear of the Digital World caused him to become insane.

A pairing that I love: I actually don't ship... Well, as publicly as I used to, but I'm into Taichi/Rei from the V Tamer Manga.

A pairing that I despise: I guess the more annoying ships? Like, the ones that go overboard with getting irate over people not liking what they ship.
