Adventure Log 2

Well, it seems I’ve found myself in an interesting situation. That or a really dumb one.

Arriving back at Splatsville, I spotted a familiar face.

After writing a couple good hits with Pearl, I wasn’t expecting Captain Cuttlefish here. Or should I say retired Captain Cuttlefish.

Either way, I followed him into the manhole.

“Lutarna,” Lutarna spoked annoyed as once again Cuttlefish mistaken her for LUlu.

“Of course Lulu. But right now we got work to do,” Cuttlefish replied.

“Sir, with all due respect, I think you are starting to get things mixed up again. Why would Grandpa Vio want the great zapfish again? Let alone, why would any octarians be here?” Lutarna questioned, even more annoyed.

“I’ve seen them here! So they have to have the missing zapfish so we need to get them back!” Cuttlefish replied.

Grumbling, Lutarna sighed.

“Fiinnneee! I’ll help. Yet if there are none out here, I’m turning you into blue cheese salad,” Lutarna huffed.

“Exellent! Welcome aboard Agent 3!” Cuttlefish chuckled.

It was confusing. Someone had taken base in this large crater as the kettles went downward. Yet the biggest surprise was that Cuttlefish was right.

As soon as I got into the kettles, there was strange octarians; setting off the tractor I brought.

“Sir, they are covered in fur,” Lutarna remarked as she was petting the freed zapfish.

“Fur? Like animals?” Cuttlefish questioned.

“Yes. Specifically like mammal fur,” Lutarna replied, “Captain, forgive me. It seems you were right that Octarains are out here but this is weird. Even for my experimental standards, what is the point of putting fur on them?”

“Well, guess we need to find them out. Onwards, yes?” Cuttlefish replied.

Lutarna just sighed.

Proceeding, the kettles were pretty...simple. I know my sister as she’s set them up to be more challenging for training so seeing these, I was a bit underwhelmed.

That is until I reached the bottom.

“Sir, there’s nothing else here,” Lutarna remarked.

“Odd. It just ends. How strange,” Cuttlefish questioned as he started to look around.

Crossing her arms, Lutarna looked annoyed. Rolling her eyes, she was starting to head back up the ramps, Beethoven following behind, when a large sound was coming into hear.

Coming back down, Lutarna looked up when a large flying mech was in sight.

“Is that? Lutarna questioned before quickly moving out of the way.

Landing, the large mech was indeed piloted by King DJ Octavio.

“Grandpa Vio,” Lutarna laughed as she rushed up to him.

“Gah! Lutarna! What are you doing out here?” Vio questioned when he spotted her.

Turns out, Grandpa Vio had picked up on the strange activity too. Having constructed a new mech to handle the sands and heat out here, he tracked the same signals I was and arrived in Splatsville and these wastelands to investigate.

With one slight hiccup.

“Grandpa Vio, the mech is barely anything compared to your usual remixer. It won’t last long out here,” Lutarna remarked as she was looking over the mech.

“What? Nonsense. Just because it doesn’t have the same capability as having a Great Zapfish powering it, it can still pull it’s punches,” Vio huffed.

“I doubt that,” Lutarna replied, looking slightly annoyed.

“How about we put it to the test then? Starlight, I trust you on many things, but a fighter is not one of them,” Vio remarked.

“I can handle my own thank you!” Lutarna huffed as she pulled the hero shot out, “And you’re on.”

As I figured, without the valley’s power or a great zapfish, the mech wasn’t much. Though figuring out Grandpa Vio’s game wasn’t hard, I do admit, it wasn’t easy either. Guess Grandpa Vio had a point. Unlike Lulu, I am a bit more sheltered when it comes to fighting.

Walking up to the mech, Lutarna checked up on Octavio. Looking annoyed and worn out, Octavio sat on the ground grumbling.

“Okay...you might have had a point,” Vio spoke.

Smiling but tired herself, Lutarna replied, “As do you. Guess I need to hit the training grounds again, huh?”

Both now chuckling, Cuttlefish came waddling up.

“Eh, that was a good show you old octopus. Yet if you don’t have the great zapfish, where is it?” Cuttlefish questioned.

“Can’t say. I just came out here cause there was reports again of missing Octarians and their signals led out here. Strangely, there gave the same signal markers Lutarna showed me a while back. Reason you’re out here, yes?” Vio replied.

Lutarna nodded.

“Once I got here, I started tracking them again as they led me straight to you two,” Vio explained.

Looking puzzled, Cuttlefish remarked, “Missing Octarians, missing great zapfish, and odd mammal signals. What in calamari is going on here?”

“Well, since we are all here, might as well work on it together,” Vio encouraged.

“Sounds like a plan,” Cuttlefish chuckled.

“I CALL SHOTGUN,” Lutarna shouted.

“Now why do you get shotgun?” Cuttlefish questioned slightly annoyed.

“Sorry Craig. Grandkids come first on the big kids ride,” Vio laughed.

As I thought things were going to get more easier from there, disaster struck.

As the ground started to shake, it caved out under us. The mech being the heaviest, it fell faster into the darkness as an inky tentacle reached out and grabbed Captain Cuttlefish. Trying to reach for him, it pulled him down before I could grab him.

Then things went black.

Research For Type and Image.1

-Utopia

To start my research I decided to look into current world problems to see what I would want to base my illustrations and type on; Global public health, Education, Environment and corporate sustainability, Wildlife conservation, Marine Conservation and many more.

I couldn't however just pick an idea without researching artists for inspiration so I decided to look at some artists on the brief like, Chris Ashworth who's type work is often worn and textured. It gives for a much more exciting look into what the text is actually saying. His magazine work is very expressive and often collaged similar to other punk/rock magazines and artists of the time.

Other artists I found when researching about utopian posters was Peter Chadwick. Chadwick uses a lot of brutalist architecture to create vibrant statements about the brutalist movement and how he believes it to be beautiful architecture amongst the faceless modern glass buildings we see today. I straight away was interested in Chadwick’s work as I have also done previous collages with brutalism as growing up in Southampton there was a lot of the ‘ugly’ tower buildings.

I also watched scenes from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis as the old cinema portrayed such different predictions for what our world is now but for them would have been utopian. The scenes I watched reminded me of Kino eye who director Dziga Verotv developed into his technique.It was also the name of the movement and group that was defined by this technique. Kino-Eye was Vertov's means of capturing what he believed to be "inaccessible to the human eye". Metropolis focuses a lot on the Machines and so did Vertov. I also know that alot of the posters and art around this time was very utopian. As a lot of the work was a social commentary.

These Four artists work is different but they all share similar aspects and it would be very interesting to adopt techniques and ideologies from each one when creating my own posters especially when it comes to composition and planning.

I also looked at Anja Kaiser as I loved her style which she describes as remixing corporate culture and visual. Her text was also so fascinating as it often flooded the whole page but never got in the way or blocked the over all feel of her visuals in prints, illustration and patters.

Being a historian, I have a hard time finding historical AUs that manage to get their chosen period right. That’s why I decided to put together a list of recommendations of fics that did a very good job at emulating their historical setting.

Fic Recs - Favourite Historical Fics

1. The Legacy by eilonwy [25k words; Rated M; medieval Occitane/Southern France; Complete]

Facts: Time travel/Medieval Dramione set during the Albigensian Crusade (1208–1229) in Longuedoc (Occitane/Southern France).

Notes: Kudos for historical accuracy. Remix work of Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. Summary: When Draco finds himself partnered with Hermione Granger at work, he decides to make lemonade out of the obvious lemons and use the situation to impress his boss with his brilliance and expertise. Very suddenly, however, things take an unforeseen and dangerous turn, throwing their very lives into the balance.Written for Round 5 of the Dramione Couples Remix. My chosen, real-life couple were Raymond-Roger Trencavel and his wife, Agnes de Montpellier.

Notes: Exellent piece! Musyc does very well emulating period language and style.

Summary: Regency-era AU. Physician’s daughter Hermione Granger finds herself in need of a way to pay off her father’s debts after his death. Draco Malfoy, retired from the politics of the Isolationists, a group of pure-bloods bent on separating ‘true’ magic from lesser folk, finds himself in need of a tutor for his son, Scorpius, who appears to be incapable of magic and must learn to survive in a world without it. Draco also needs a wife and mother for Scorpius, to satisfy a promise to his unwell father. After she saves his son from an attack by Isolationists, Draco hires the Muggle-born Miss Granger for the former, and after a riot in Vauxhall Gardens and a scandalous discovery made by his mother, weds that selfsame Muggle-born for the latter. While making the best of her marriage of (in)convenience, Hermione discovers that Scorpius’ history of wild imaginings and dreams is more than just imagination. Facts: WWW induced Magic Dream/19th century romance.

Notes: Not too many historical details but it works really well with its reimagined genre. Bonus: smut.

Summary: When Hermione agrees to try the Weasley Twin’s newly renovated Patented Daydream Charms, she doesn’t expect her irksome co-worker to join her on the adventure. Nor does she expect the impact of their sojourn to Regency Era England to bleed into reality.
