Brazil to highlight climate success, struggles by hosting 2025 COP in the Amazon

Brazil will host the 2025 UN Conference of Parties (COP) climate summit in the Amazon rainforest and focus on “challenges” and “success stories.” Analysts can find both in actions by the country and JBS SA, one of the largest meat processing companies in the world.
Brazil leads BRICS economies in curbing CO2 emissions but still lags behind projections needed to avoid global warming. It committed to reducing emissions by 59% to 67% by 2035 and is one of the first nations to provide an updated Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement.
The nation is currently a global leader in renewable energy but will need to invest significantly more to achieve 2025 net-zero goal s. Hydropower accounts for 110 GW of its total 236 GW in installed capacity, while solar has reached 48 GW and wind 28 GW.
Brazil’s reduction targets were increased at the COP29 summit in Azerbaijan in late November. This came as part of a climate finance deal calling on developed nations to provide $300 billion per year in climate financing to the developing world. Brazil’s biodiversity and broader aims to fight deforestation make it a top global funding priority.

FIVE BOLD NBA PREDICTIONS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON
Five Bold NBA Predictions for the Remainder of the Season
January 14, 2025
The NBA season is heating up, and as playoff contention tightens, surprising twists and turns are on the horizon. Here are five bold predictions for how the rest of the 2025 season could unfold.
1. Detroit Pistons Will Advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals
After years of rebuilding, the Pistons are poised to surprise the league. Cade Cunningham’s All-Star-level play, combined with the toughness of Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren, has provided Detroit with a foundation that’s both gritty and dynamic. Malik Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr. are hitting threes at a lethal rate, adding a critical outside dimension to the Pistons’ attack.
Though they’re still seen as underdogs, their current momentum could lead to an upset against any team not named the Cleveland Cavaliers. If their young core plays with discipline, Detroit might very well find themselves in the second round or, improbably, the Eastern Conference Finals.
2. Boston Celtics Will Stop Cleveland Cavaliers’ Finals Dreams
While the Cavaliers have dominated much of the season and look like strong contenders, Boston’s experience gives them the edge. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have taken the painful lessons of past playoff losses to heart, much like other eventual champions before them.
Add the Celtics’ balanced roster, including Derrick White and Jrue Holiday, and Cleveland’s lack of playoff-tested depth becomes a concern. The Celtics are well-equipped to grind out victories, making them favorites to edge the Cavs in a potential matchup.
3. Russell Westbrook Will Deliver a Legendary Playoff Performance
Russell Westbrook’s resurgence with the Denver Nuggets has been one of the most captivating storylines this season. As Jokic’s pick-and-roll partner, Westbrook has found his groove, averaging impressive numbers while bringing a burst of energy to Denver’s rotation.
Expect a jaw-dropping 30-point, 10-assist, and 10-rebound performance in a crucial playoff game. Westbrook’s ability to thrive under pressure and his renewed confidence make this not just possible but likely against a formidable opponent.
4. Lonzo Ball Will Shine in the Play-In Tournament
After a long and arduous recovery, Lonzo Ball’s return to action could serve as the emotional spark Chicago needs. Should the Bulls find themselves in a play-in game, expect Lonzo to shine brightly, inspired by his brothers’ success off the court and his own journey back to form.
Whether it’s knocking down threes, dishing precision assists, or locking down on defense, Lonzo’s contributions will be pivotal, even if Chicago doesn’t progress far. His performance will solidify his value as a leader and motivator.
5. A Cavs vs. Thunder Finals Will Mark the Lowest-Watched Series Ever
While both teams have the talent to reach the Finals, their relative lack of superstar marketability could hurt viewership. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Donovan Mitchell are undeniable stars, but they don’t yet have the mainstream appeal of LeBron James or Stephen Curry.
Moreover, the NBA has struggled to build new icons, with SGA lacking a signature shoe and Mitchell overshadowed by the likes of Anthony Edwards in the Adidas lineup. Purists will enjoy the series, but casual fans might tune out, preferring the narrative of proven champions or established dynasties.
Conclusion The NBA thrives on unpredictability, and this season is no exception. From Detroit’s underdog rise to the potential viewing challenges of new-market Finals contenders, these bold predictions capture the drama and excitement of the league. Whether or not these scenarios come to fruition, one thing’s for sure: the rest of the season will be a wild ride.

The Los Angeles Firestorm
January 9, 2025
Robert B. Hubbell
The largest firestorm ever to hit Los Angeles has ravaged the nation’s second-most populous city. Tens of thousands have lost their homes, hundreds of thousands have evacuated, and everyone is dealing with collateral effects, which include widespread power outages, low or no water pressure, and unhealthy air.
Jill and I (and our families) are safe. But we know eight families that have lost their homes. We know many more who fled their homes on Tuesday and do not know whether their homes are still standing. We have opened our home to friends who evacuated from the Eaton Fire (Pasadena / Altadena area).
Widespread power outages have affected traffic lights across broad portions of LA, making driving more dangerous. Many schools were closed, which meant that Jill and I spent the day caring for granddaughters—always a blessing.
Amid a humanitarian crisis, President-elect Donald Trump posted a statement that insulted California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, by claiming the governor was to blame for the wildfires for refusing to sign a fictional “water restoration agreement.” Trump wrote:
Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California.
Turning a tragedy into a callous, crass political attack is reprehensible. Moreover, Trump’s post demonstrates that he does not understand the nature of the crisis facing Los Angeles. “Lack of water” did not cause the conflagration; climate change did. Although climate change is not entirely responsible for the fires, which are a seasonal feature in Los Angeles, it is responsible for magnifying the intensity and scale of the fires to unprecedented levels.
California experiences seasonal desert winds (called Santa Ana winds) from October through March. But the combined effect of a warmer-than-usual Pacific Ocean, a wobbling jet stream that has wandered into the mid-latitudes of the US, and record-low levels of humidity turned blustery Santa Ana winds into hurricane-force winds that created a blast-furnace effect. See Vox, The unusually strong force behind the apocalyptic fires in Los Angeles
Some observers may argue that single weather events, standing alone, cannot prove that climate change is real. Point taken. But the insurance industry studies trends in weather disasters and draws reasonable inferences about changes in the risk environment.
Fire insurers have recently concluded that the trend of wildfires in California is no longer a risk they can tolerate. Many of those who lost their homes over the last two days have recently lost their fire insurance coverage as insurers have exited the California market. See Business Insider, Insurers Cut California Fire Coverage Months Before LA, Palisades Blaze.
Despite the ubiquitous evidence of human-caused climate change, Trump plans to withdraw from the Paris Climate accords and reverse US energy policy favoring renewable energy.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trump pledged that he would ensure that no new wind turbines would be constructed in the US because—in his addled mind—wind turbines affect the mental health of whales. See Tribune News Service, Trump says Massachusetts wind farms are ‘driving whales crazy’. (Trump pledged on Tuesday that “no windmills will be built when he regains office on Jan. 20.”)
But it is not only scientific illiteracy and general ignorance that is driving Trump's anti-environment stance. Like clockwork, right-wing social media is pushing disinformation and conspiracy theories. See Mother Jones, As Los Angeles Burns, We’re Seeing a Conflagration of Lies and Disinformation.
As noted in the Mother Jones article, right-wing hate mongers are blaming “diversity initiatives” in the Los Angeles Fire Department—a slander provoked by the simple fact that LA Fire Department is led by an LGBTQ woman. Per Mother Jones,
[C]onservative actor and Palisades homeowner James Woods [] denied that climate change played any role in the fires and blamed “diversity,” citing the LAFD chief’s profile [as a lesbian woman].
Others resurrected Trump's old claims that California experienced wildfires because it did not “rake and clean” its forest floors like Finland. Trump's claims are risible for several reasons, including the fact that the federal government owns most of the forest woodland in California—47%. The state owns only 3% of the forests, while the remainder is in private hands. Moreover, California has an aggressive prescribed burn plan designed to reduce fuel load in the areas that California owns.
Los Angeles faces several more agonizing days of wind-driven fires--to be followed by the slow process of containing a dozen wildfires in hilly, dry terrain. And then the victims must begin the long process of rebuilding homes and reclaiming normalcy. That process will require assistance from local, state, and federal government agencies. At a time when too many see the government as the enemy, we are reminded once again that “Government is simply the name we give to the things we choose to do together.”
Coda
Early in the day, a reader recommended an app that provides real-time information about wildfires in an easy to use but comprehensive format. I have been using the app throughout the day to understand what is happening around us. The app is called Watch Duty. It is run by a network of volunteers and is free to download and use. Enhanced versions for professionals and journalists start at $24.99 per year. If you are affected by the fires, I highly recommend this app. The link is here: Watch Duty - Wildfire Maps & Alerts

US Government Announces New Policies to Curb Rising Inflation
Washington D.C., January 20, 2025 - The U.S. government has taken a major step toward curbing inflation, which has reached a decade high. With the inflation rate now at 6.8 percent, economists and citizens are facing rising prices for basic goods, fuel, and housing costs.
The first step taken was an interest rate adjustment by the Federal Reserve. In a statement released on Tuesday (19/1), Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced a 0.5 percent increase in the benchmark interest rate. This increase aims to reduce excessive consumption and investment, which is considered to be one of the triggers of high inflation. Powell emphasized that this monetary policy will be implemented carefully to avoid the risk of recession.
In addition, the White House also launched a new stimulus package that focuses on the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector. In a press conference held on the same day, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen explained that this package includes providing energy subsidies to SMEs, tax breaks, and incentives for businesses that switch to renewable energy. “We understand the pressure that small businesses are feeling right now, and the government is committed to providing real help to maintain their competitiveness,” Yellen said.
However, this policy is not free from criticism. Some parties, including opposition groups in Congress, said the interest rate hike could have a negative impact on low-income people who are still in the process of post-pandemic economic recovery. They also questioned the effectiveness of the stimulus, which is considered to be less directly targeted at households affected by inflation.
On the other hand, analysts give mixed views. Sarah Johnson, senior economist at the Brookings Institution, said that this policy is a necessary step to control inflation, but it must be balanced with close monitoring of its social impact. “We need to make sure that these measures do not increase the burden on vulnerable groups,” she said.
Meanwhile, Americans continue to wait for the impact of this policy on prices in the market. Some citizens have voiced concerns over the rising prices of basic goods, while others hope that the government's policy can immediately restore economic stability.
The US government's move is in the spotlight, given the country's position as one of the world's largest economic powers. The extent to which this policy succeeds in lowering inflation without triggering other negative impacts, will still be a big question that continues to be monitored in the next few months.

Falling In Reverse live in Cologne/Germany, 12/2/2024
The last show of the Europe Tour 2024 for Falling In Reverse was in Cologne, Germany, Lanxess Arena, on Dec 2nd, 2024. This was also an upgraded venue, sold out, so there were an incredible amount of people watching.
Via Instagram
The show was fantastic!!! Even though the band was right after the Paris show and they were probably exhausted, Ronnie was an energy bomb and the audience was highly receptive as well.

Via Ronnie's IG account
The footage was very poor, I was benefited with a friend attending the show, but I was struggling to get good videos regardless.
youtube
There were more good pictures than videos, you can follow for more after this post, separately.

Via Instagram
This time neither FIR and Ronnie, nor we knew that this will be the last show of the whole EU/UK tour. Despite Ronnie being the best frontman ever existed, as he always is, nothing special was added to this show.
youtube
There is a video (will post separately) in which Ronnie confers "The Drug In Me Is You" and asks the crowd to let it all out and sing the song with him. After he begins it, he suddenly stops playing ans tell the crowd to be even more wild bc he wants to feel it in his chest ❤️❤️❤️

Via Instagram
"Watch The World Burn" is already fixed with the intro telling people to leave the house before the world is set on fire, and then confirming they just joined "the cult of Ronnie Radke".
youtube
This pic ⬇️ was uploaded originally by a member of the opening band Hollywood Undead. Ronnie shared it in his IG stories. Sweet one, full of joy 🫶

Via Ronnie's IG stories
The crowd selfie was uploaded by Christian Thompson, a little late after the show, I have already known thers will be one by Ronnie saying it at the end of a video. Ronnie also shared a zon of beautiful crowd pictures, and totals of the venue.

A sad moment follows, as I already mentioned, unfortunately, w/o anyone knowing it before, this turned out to be the last show of the whole tour. A day later, on the 3rd Ronnie Radke was rejected from entering the UK, his visa has been denied.
youtube
Falling In Reverse had to postpone all 7 (SEVEN) UK shows to a 2025 date, sometime after Ronnie gets permission to enter the country. Fans were disappointed and turned against the UK government. They seven signed petition appealing to the law forces of the UK. Ronnie released a T-shirt abt the sad event, helping the UK prison law renewal by the income.

French Politics Update
Since the 2024 French elections earlier this year, we left off with a more balanced National Assembly. Left-wing politicians became the highest population at 188 seats with centrist Emmanuel Macron still the president. The centrist party is not far behind with 161 seats and the right-wing party with 142.
Many networks at the time discussed the expectation of a hung parliament, as no one party holds the 289-seat majority.
Some things stay the same. In July, the National Assembly voted to keep centrist party member Yaël Braun-Pivet as speaker, winning by 13 votes. Additionally, many people have called for Macron to step down as President, but he will likely stay for the rest of his term until 2027.
New PM
On the other hand, there have been major changes. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal resigned in July, and was replaced by Michel Barnier in September. He is a conservative, the leader of the 2016-2019 Brexit negotiation, and his appointment was met with much criticism from the left-wing parties.
Days after his appointment, over 100,000 people participated in protests across France. Many people view President Macron’s PM choice as disruptive to democracy, as the PM is most often chosen from the dominant National Assembly party.
Macron states that he made this choice based on the belief that Barnier seemed the most capable of dealing with political deadlocks, as is expected of the Parliament with no party holding majority.
I have to wonder, though, if this was also out of spite for the left-wing parties winning more seats than his centrist party. Barnier’s politics are expected to rely on joint support from the centrist and conservative parties. If the right or center opposes him on anything, he almost certainly will face loss after loss with his proposed policies. Will this lead France backward after the left finally gained some political power?
Barnier’s Address
Barnier delivered his first parliamentary address on Tuesday, October 1st. Summarily, he emphasized the hazard of French finances and debts, and the environment.
France is more than 3 trillion euros in public and environmental debt, which Barnier addresses first. His goal is to bring the deficit down from 6% of the national GDP to 5% in 2025, with the goal of under 3% by 2029.
His outline for achieving this is reducing spending, being more efficient in government spending (addressing corruption and unjustified spending), and taxes. He phrases higher taxes as a temporary measure, and states that large companies as well as the richest and wealthiest French people will be asked for exceptional contributions.
Barnier also addresses environmental debt. He plans to continue reducing GHG emissions, and for France to be more active in the EU and in the Paris Agreements, which push for countries to collectively act against climate change. He also mentions encouraging industry transitions in energy and recycling, encouraging nuclear energy development, and developing renewable resources of energy more, like biofuels and solar energy.
He has also conceived of a large national conference to act on the matter of water, the scarcity of which is an imminent issue for France.
Additionally, he plans to propose a yearly day of citizens consultations. In his idea, doors will be open for citizens for people of all levels of government to ask questions and start discussions and debates on various topics.
Another noteworthy statement from Barnier is that the pension reform bill voted on in 2023 might have to be changed, which received a loud reply from the audience.
As someone living in a country where an entire political party is built on denying factual evidence and realities, it is surprising to hear someone who does not deny climate change, and calls for equitable taxes to address debt.
About 30 minutes into his address, though, New Caledonia comes up. This is more in line with expectations of conservatives. New Caledonia is still a colonized territory of France, and a recent bill from Macron was going to disadvantage native Kanak people for the advancement of French loyalists on the archipelago. After fatal protests, the bill has been suspended before ratification, likely to be readdressed in 2025.
Also in conservative spirit, Barnier calls for stricter immigration policies in effort to meet “integration objectives”. France faces a cost-of-living crisis and an affordable housing shortage that has buttressed the right’s stance on needing stricter border measures.
Le Pen Trial
Also straining politics, especially for right-wing support, is recent news about popular right-wing figure Marine Le Pen.
On September 30th, Le Pen faced charges of embezzling European Parliament money. The right-wing party Rassemblement National is accused of filing false employee records in order to improperly use funds to pay members of the party. Le Pen is one of many senior party members involved in the alleged embezzlement.
This trial is expected to go on for seven to nine weeks, so the final outcome is some time away. But for now we can expect this will have negative impacts if Le Pen still vies for presidential election in 2027. It will likely also decrease citizen’s trust in the conservative party’s ability to make responsible economic decisions.
If found guilty, Le Pen and the other defendants could face up to ten years in prison and lose the eligibility to run for office.
After the 2024 shock vote instigated by President Macron, the French National assembly gained a left-leaning majority, though not enough for an automatic 289-vote majority. In most cases, this would mean a left-wing Prime Minister as well as a left-wing president, though that’s because the presidential vote is usually shortly after that of the national assembly.
Contrarily, Macron went with a conservative candidate that he believed to be stronger for the job. This increases the political unrest in the country, and increases the likelihood of delays and blockages in legislation development.
While the conservative Prime Minister has stated many intentions that people in the U.S.A. might call left-leaning, regarding climate change and tax targets, his appointment has upset many. His views on immigration, especially, contrast with most left-wing groups who want integration and safety for others. Overall, this decision from Macron calls into question his loyalty and dedication to the wants of the French people.

An aerial view of the controversial Yellow Pine project near Pahrump, Nev. Credit: Patrick Donnelly.
Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Local conservationist Patrick Donnelly drove east along the Loneliest Road in America, a ribbon of pavement in north central Nevada that deserves its name. Before him, sprawling in every direction, was a green-gray sagebrush basin so large you could probably plop Las Vegas in it and still have room to spare. Save for a stiff wind and the occasional cow bleat, a heavy silence sat on the valley. Not much moved aside from skittish grouse and a few scattered cars. This is a place, a big open hunk of public land, where humans haven’t made an intensive mark.
At least not yet. In corporate conference rooms and government offices from Vegas to Washington, D.C., policymakers, executives and lobbyists are planning a very different future for valleys like this one. If their plans become reality, vast swaths of undeveloped land across Nevada could soon be crossed by towering transmission lines and studded with solar farms in the name of fighting climate change.
The Biden administration has made an aggressive drive to permit 25 gigawatts of renewable energy on America’s federal lands by 2025, which the U.S. Department of the Interior says is enough to power 12 million homes. It surpassed that goal in April. In August this year, it also proposed a solar plan that would make more than 31 million acres of federal land across the American West available for potential solar development.
Even before Donald Trump’s victory in the November election, the Biden administration has been rushing to push through as many renewable energy projects as it can. Trump has promised to place more emphasis on oil and gas development, and at an October 2024 roundtable with Latino voters he criticized the impact that solar development has on the desert, saying “it’s all steel and glass and wires. It looks like hell. … And what it does to your desert areas or the areas that you are putting it, it’s just crazy.” Yet during Trump’s first term, his administration did approve a number of major solar projects on federal land, including the controversial Yellow Pine project near Pahrump, Nevada. And some experts doubt that he will completely roll back the ongoing renewable energy boom in the American West.
“I don’t think there is much of a difference between Trump and Biden on solar, renewables and public lands,” said Dustin Mulvaney, a professor and sustainable energy expert at San José State University. “The clean energy industry plays both sides in the election. Public lands for renewable energy has been pretty bipartisan.”
Nevada, where the federal government manages more than 80 percent of the land, is a key theater for such development—nearly 12 million acres are eligible for it under the Biden administration’s solar plan, approximately 17 percent of the state. More than one-third of the solar and wind proposals pending before the federal Bureau of Land Management nationwide, meanwhile, are located in Nevada.
Donnelly, an environmental activist with the Center for Biological Diversity, is deeply troubled by this federally backed plan. He has spent years defending Nevada’s wild places and endangered animals from developers of all kinds—mining groups, oil and gas drillers, real estate firms and agricultural interests. But now he sees a major new threat at the hands of the renewable energy industry, whose growing power and presence was on display during his road trip. All across the state, solar farms, geothermal projects, lithium mines, transmission lines and more are being planned on undeveloped public lands.
“We are talking about a fundamental transformation of the American West,” said Donnelly.

China’s path to reducing carbon emissions should be determined by China and not controlled by anyone else, President Xi Jinping told dozens of officials, at the same time as US climate envoy John Kerry is in Beijing seeking consensus on global warming.
Xi was speaking at a two-day national conference on ecological and environmental protection that started on Monday, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported on Tuesday night.
“China’s commitments are unswerving, but the path towards the goals as well as the manner, pace and intensity of efforts to achieve them should and must be determined by the country itself, rather than swayed by others,” he said.
“[We should] actively and steadily work toward carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, foster a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system, accelerate the formation of a new power system and strengthen the country’s capability of guaranteeing oil and gas security.”
Xi also urged the country to safeguard ecological security and nuclear and radiation safety to “ensure that the natural environment and conditions, which are the foundation of survival and development, are not threatened or damaged”.
He asked for a concerted legal, market, technological and policy effort to achieve his goals.
The conference was attended by all seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee, the pinnacle of the party’s decision-making apparatus, as well as a wide range of party and government bodies.
Kerry, whose four-day visit concludes on Wednesday, has met Premier Li Qiang and top diplomat Wang Yi, as he seeks consensus on the fight against climate change.
There are also hopes his trip will add positive momentum to US-China relations, in their worst shape in decades.
Kerry tweeted on Tuesday that he appreciated the opportunity to have “an important discussion” with Li on how the US and China can work together to keep the pledge to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius about pre-industrial levels – a commitment of the 2015 Paris agreement – alive.
Li called for both sides to stick to climate commitments made in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
Xi promised in September 2020 that China’s carbon emissions would peak by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060. In 2021, he said China would tightly control coal consumption and gradually reduce it after 2025.
China has repeatedly emphasised the need to secure its energy security and deliver on its climate commitments.
The most recent government work report to address the issue – submitted to the National People’s Congress, China’s legislature, in March by the previous premier Li Keqiang – said research and development of clean energy was a priority for 2023.
In April, the National Energy Administration announced plans to add 160 million kilowatts of installed wind and solar capacity by the end of this year, boosting the share of wind and solar electricity to 15.3 per cent of society’s energy use.
“Three years after making its carbon-reduction pledge, China’s energy and industrial transitions are still far from complete,” said Ma Jun, director of the Institute for Public and Environmental Affairs, a non-profit environmental research firm.
While China’s renewable energy is increasing, China has approved more coal projects recently, noted Ma. “Due to complex geopolitical changes, China has shifted its focus to energy security,” he said.
A major stumbling block to an agreement between the US and China on climate issues is China’s use of coal power. Washington wants China to reduce its domestic reliance on coal to cut more methane emissions. But Xi has reiterated many times that it is a matter of “energy security”.
There has been a significant increase in approvals for coal power projects within China since last summer’s extreme heatwave, which led to power supply crunches in several southern provinces. The rise in domestic approvals has sparked international concern about China’s ability to deliver on its climate promise.
On Kerry’s last visit to China in August 2021, he asked Beijing to stop funding coal power projects outside its borders. A month later, at the UN General Assembly, Xi announced that China would no longer build new coal power overseas.
Regarding China and US’s differences in climate issues and carbon reduction, Ma said, “What we have to see is what kind of cooperation the two sides are going to go for, and whether they can achieve a win-win situation on what each side is good at.”
