This phone is very speedy and high-performance thanks to its powerful Deca processor based on the Helio X20 SoC and the Mali T880 GPU. If we compare it to the previously reviewed Huawei Honor 6X based on the Hisilicon Kirin 655 Octa Core (8 cores) processor, the gap between both devices is almost double in favor of the LeEco Le S3 Device. In this phone you have a total of 32GB ROM (internal storage), from that 6GB is used for system files. The downside of this device is that you can’t add an external Micro-SD Card since the phone has only two sockets, suitable for a pair of Nano SIM Cards.

LeEco Le S3 X626 comes with Global ROM called EUI 5.8.018S. A very user-friendly system based on Android 6.0 marshmallow operating system. It came pre-installed with all Google services including play store and few others, such as the electronic ‘Compass‘, ‘My LeEco‘ cloud app and LeEco’s universal IR remote control Application. Overall, my general impression playing with it was nothing but good.

Outstanding quality. Very bright, readable with excellent viewing angles.

  Cameras

The pictures produced by the 20.0MP main camera were relatively sharp and not grainy. It worked great under optimal, and low light conditions. Another feature worth mentioning is the built-in 4K resolution recording function that you normally can’t find in $100-150 phones that worked very well producing high-quality videos.

    Sound

One of the main highlights this phone has to offer is a superb sound quality. LeEco added Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that greatly enhances sound quality. You can select different equalizer settings according to content, like movies, music etc. The Speaker was loud with rich and clear sounds. LeEco didn’t add an audio jack in this device .instead the company added the IR remote sensor.

If you want to connect earphones/headphones you will have two options. Doing it wirelessly with use a Bluetooth device, or connect with a wired type through the USB Type C port using he USB-Type C Audio adapter included in the package.

IR Remote Control (Universal Remote)

LeEco integrated an interesting remote control functionality within the S3 phone. A function you don’t normally find in a low budget phone in this price range. To start operating and controlling appliances you will first have to pick the right one from a list of a wide section of vendors compatible with the remote. Next step is turning the appliance off. After, you will need to power it using the power button inside the remote control Application. If the appliance responses and turns on you will be asked if it worked. And that’s it if all goes well you’re ready to use the phone as a remote control unit. Based on my personal tests the remote worked well with HiMedia Q10 Pro Android Set-Top Box and a Toshiba TV Model 42SL863.

Tested with ‘Recorder‘ App – Performed well very good and was sensitive enough in picking low environment sounds.

GPS worked ‘out of the box’ and tested with ‘GPS Test‘ Application including ‘Here Maps‘ in off-line mode without an Internet connection.

Battery

Powered MediaTek MTK6797 Deca Core processor, power consumption, and battery life weren’t too bad, but not so great. with light usage, you can “squeeze” about 5+ hours of screen time. Again. it depends on If you are using functions you’re enabling, for example, GPS, Camera, setting screen brightness to the maximum and so forth. For a Deca (10 core) processor, a 3000 mAh battery is not sufficient, especially without an audio jack connection if you need to a Bluetooth earphone that also consumes additional battery power. At this point, LeEco could have picked a slightly higher capacity battery between 3500 mAh – 4000 mAh.

How to Tweak Battery Performance

As a first step, It’s highly recommended setting the display brightness to %50 and enabling the ‘adaptive brightness‘ function. If the ‘Color Mode‘ is also enabled it’s also best disabling it. As a final step, under ‘System settings‘ -> ‘Battery‘ -> ‘Power saving management‘ enabling all power saving features.

  Battery Charging 

LeEco Le S3 supports MediaTek Pump Express Fast Charging technology and included a suitable fast charger amongst the phone accessories. According to my test, after discharging the battery completely it took 1 hour: 15 min to fully charge the phone 3000 mAh battery, which is considered to be a short time and a pretty good result.

Final Verdict

The LeEco Le S3 X626 is a fantastic phone. The battery life could have been a lot better. Taking into considerations this phone costs $125, this is maybe the best affordable high-quality phone you can get for this price range and it’s defiantly worth the money. If you still not convinced It’s a right pick, I suggest checking the Letv LeEco Le 2 X520 Model based on the more power officiant Snapdragon 652 64 bit Octa-core processor.

Appearance & Design

From my personal impression, build quality, design, and appearance all looked very impressive. MAZE Alpha body is composed of a solid metal frame with a glossy black plastic cover that can easily get fingerprint marks when holding it, but its something you can avoid if you buy a protective case. That said, If we would compare the MAZE Alpha external looks vs Doogee Mix device, externally they look very similar with the front camera located on the right corner, and also the location of the LED flash and shape of the housing of the rear camera that looks pretty much the same on both devices. The main difference is the size of the device, weight and the MAZE Alpha big 6-inch display.

MAZE Alpha USB Type-C Interface (Plug Compatibility Issues )

The USB Type-C™ cable plug provided inside MAZE package was not the correct one. It didn’t hook up to the phone port and was free, therefore couldn’t charge the phone. The reason I wanted to point this matter out is that I didn’t see any tech reviews discussing this problem. To avoid confusion, both MAZE Alpha and also Bluboo S1 Phones are using a USB Type C ver 3.1 Gen 1 Plug, and not the commonly used USB Type C 3.0 plug. If you are asking what is the difference between both connectors?. the lengths are not similar and the v3.0 connector is larger in size.

This leads to few compatibility issues. If you have plans on buying the MAZE Alpha you need to the into account you will need to buy few extra cables as a backup. especial if you are going to use it with power bank or a portable charger. Although we are not talking about a defect or a flaw in the design. Perhaps this type of plus was selected because it is capable of achieving high current and voltage with minimal power loss as main consideration. Nevertheless, It’s not clear why MAZE decided to select this type of USB Type C interface for their phones when the standard Type-C 3.0 is still very commonly used worldwide.

Hardware

Powered by MediaTek Helio P25 SoC, The MAZE Alpha phone is powered by an MT6757 Octa-Core processor (8 core) running at frequencies between 247MHz- 2.5 GHz. Similar to the previously Bluboo S1 and Doogee Mix devices. From my personal impression, the phone performed well with a relative high AnTuTu score of 61084. The additional 4GB RAM with combining with the Helio P25 SoC contributes to a more smoother user experience running applications as well as high graphic games under Android 7.0 OS.

MAZE Alpha comes with a stock Android ROM based on Android 7.0 Nougat OS, without any special launchers,  just a simple and clean system. Overall user experience was smooth and good,  No complaints here.

MAZE Alpha comes with an excellent 6.0 inch 1920 x 1080 sharp and bright display. As a user planning on watching movies on this big screen device, I had no issues about its quality.

Speaker – Produced average, but very decent sound.

Microphone – Performance was pretty average as in most Chinese phones.

Cameras – After updating the latest ROM via Wireless Update (OTA) launched on 17/10/017 the general quality of the photos produced by the main camera and the front selfie camera looked decent or very average. In low light conditions, the photos came out very grainy and blurred.

According to my test, the MAZE Alpha 4000 mAh Lithium-ion Polymer battery provides approximately 7 hr:20 min of “light” usage performing basic tasks, such as playing few youtube videos, Browsing, using IM Applications. It’s not the best battery selection in the world for a device equipped with a 6-inch display, but considering the phone price, it’s a very reasonable pick that should be enough power for a half a day of normal usage on a single charge. beyond it, you will need to use a power bank or just charge it again.

After fully discharging (draining) the 4000 mAh battery it took 02:07 min to charge it. A very reasonable result based on my previous tests checking other Chinese phone brands, equipped with a smaller 3000 mAh battery that was also charged in ~1:40 Min.

The Maze Alpha is a good phablet with an excellent 6-inch display. experience playing with the phone was excellent, and overall its a great pick for users that like to use their phones for gaming and watching movies. Bottom line, its a good buy for the hardware specifications and I highly recommend.

Jumping into hardware and performance. This phone is based on the Hisilicon Kirin 655 Octa Core processor operating at frequencies between 1.4 GHz – 2.11 GHz. In AnTuTu benchmark test results the 6X ranked with a score of  556655 that is slightly below the previous reviewed Doogee Mix phone that is based on the Helio P20 SoC and has additional 1GB of RAM (4GB RAM in total) ranking with a score of 59000-60000. That said, the phone worked very well and user experience was nothing but excellent.

The 6X provided for this review came with an international ROM and US Charger plus. the device came with EMUI 5.0 customized UI built on top of Android 7.0 nougat. According to latest media reports, this device will be amongst the few first devices in the market getting the new Android 8.0 update, expected to be out until the end of this year (2017).

Huawei did an excellent work in designing a very user-friendly and clean UI that is easy to operate. in this international ROM, the company included all Google apps and services and extra few pre installed Apps such as WPS Office, Booking, CNN, TOP GAMES!, TripAdvisor, Truecaller, Facebook, Flipboard including few additional sport activity apps called: HiCare and Health that works in conjunction with the GPS and phone internal sensors, to measure excise effectiveness with a rout display when running.

Huawei didn’t cut cost with the device display. The 6X uses a highly responsive 1080P FHD 10 point Display panel. When set at highest brightness level, the screen was still viewable under direct sunlight. Also, both Color production and sharpness were excellent.

  Cameras

Photos produced in optimal light conditions using the 12.0MP rear camera were of above average quality, with good details and color saturation. In low light conditions the camera still performed reasonably well, but sometimes produced very grainy pictures but its expected with a $180 phone and not an expensive flagship. In more extreme low light conditions indoors, for example in a completely dark room, the flash was extremely helpful and worked well. The 8.0 MP camera also performed well, in a standard range in terms of picture quality.

  Special Camera functions

In the camera app settings you can find many interesting features, like the document ‘Beauty mode’ , ‘Audio note’, ‘Pro video’, ‘Watermark’, slow motion video recording, and ‘wide aperture’ which uses the 2.0 MP sensor that lets you to focus on specific objects inside a picture while blurring the rest of the objects inside the picture.

Perhaps one of great importance having in any smartphone. Huawei added all the necessary sensors: Acceleration, Gyroscope, Gravity, and magnetic field. if you are asking what they are very needed.Without the gravity and Acceleration, the user will not be able to play games that support special hand gestures. And without the magnetic sensor, the GPS will not be accurate, and it will not be possible to use the phone as an electronic compose or navigate with it in offline mode, without an internet connection.

  Speaker

Like most Chinese smartphones, due to cost considerations, this device also has a single speaker system. The sound produced by the speaker was loud enough and of good quality.

Microphone – Performed pretty average/standard without any problems.

    Navigation

GPS worked out of the box. Tested with ‘GPS Test‘ showed an accuracy of 5m. ‘HERE WeGo‘ navigation App also worked without an internet connection thanks to the contribution of the magnetic field sensor.

  Battery

Honor 6x  is equipped with a 3340 mAh none detachable battery that provides a decent one screen time. Depending on usage, with some light usage of the cameras, IM, 4G connection enabled you can expect about 5 up to 6 hours of on screen. If you enable the ‘power saving mode‘ it reduces visual effects, disables email auto sync function and ultimately should squeeze extra battery work time.

  Charging  & Screen on Time

Huawei provided a 5V-2A charger with the package. In my test, I decided not to use the original one and used a quick  MediaTek charger capable of producing voltage up to 9V that didn’t seem to have any effect on charging speed.

In both tests, I connected the charge through a USB voltage /current tester and then measured the overall charging time after the battery was fully discharged. According to the voltage meter device, the voltage nor Amp level didn’t change during the charging process with 5V and maximum current up to 1.5A.

Final Verdict

As a user, I had an excellent experience operating the Honor X6. Huawei  EMUI system is very intuitive and easy to operate. Packed with lots of features and functions not all covered in this review. The final verdict is that the X6 is definitely a very high-quality and a great Chinese smartphone worth buying that I personally recommend.

Excellent on all levels.I didn’t find any external issues or problems with the product quality.

  Operation

Installation of the microphone is very easy and straightforward even if you don’t use the English manual, also provided with the package. This microphone is a PnP type (plug and play) device, so you don’t need to install any drivers and it’s compatible with notebook computers / PCs running under windows, Linux and Mac OS. If you are planning on using it with a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet PC it most likely will not work. To my surprise I had partial success using it with the DOOGEE Mix, as for other smartphones It didn’t work well or the sound was very weak.

But if you are into experimentation, Since the microphone uses a USB type of connector you will need to buy a simple USB-OTG adapter converter and just try your luck with different smartphone brands. That said, This microphone designed mainly for Desktop PCs.

The S3 has a round shape with white colored glossy surface. It’s definitely not the typical squared shape of a case you normally find in common projector designs. On the rear side of the S3 projector you have the power button, DC input, SPDIF, 4x USB 2.0 Ports, OTG including three video input interfaces: HDMI, AV, VGA.

Operation

It was not hard to figure it out and understanding how to operate the device. Adjusting projector brightness and contrast settings, calibrating the shape of the picture are done through android settings and also use using the projector settings screen, which is more intuitive and user friendly.

In the IR remote control unit you will find all of the projector functions. There are no other operating buttons on the projector unit itself, except the power button is in a user prospective is very limiting. On the back of the unit there are three optional types of video input sources: VGA, HDMI and AV to be used by external devices to pass the signal through the S3 unit.

If for some reason you need to switch back to default projector mode from one of the video source inputs and you lost the remote, then you are in a big problem switching back to projector mode. After clarifying this limitation, The S3 remote offers additional basic functions such as fly mouse using the navigation keys, but for something more convenient, it’s highly recommended buying a good remote control with fly mouse functions that is easier to operate.

  Controlling Picture Settings

Depending on the distance of the unit from the wall, The maximum viewable projected image size is approximately 100 inches (diagonal) within a distance of 2.5m. To control the picture settings you have a vertical and horizontal keystone correction button located on the remote control and can also can be adjusted through the projector settings screen. This function basically helps the user to adjust and Correct the Image Shape in situations when the unit is not fully aligned relative to the wall.

  System & UI

The default ROM installed with the S3 came bundled with few pre-installed popular applications such as UC TV, Kingsoft Office suite, WiPao Cloud, HDP leave (live streaming service) and a few others, relevant to Chinese users.

For this review I received a new customized Firmware in English language with Google Play store, access which isn’t included in the default firmware since google services are blocked in China. That said, from firs impression playing with its device ran applications and games under Android 4.4 KitKat OS very smooth and fast without issues.

As mentioned previously, the S3 Hardware platform is based on the All Winner A23 Cortex-A7 Octa-Core Processor with the PowerVT SGX 544MP GPU, which both perform well under Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS. It’s also important to mention that each CPU core operates in clock frequency between 480 MHz – 1.80 GHz and not all always operate simultaneously, those they work dynamically depending on consumed system resources.

  Picture Quality

My personal impression after playing with the projector for a few days in completely dark and the semi dark environment is that the product works extremely wall, providing good quality pictures, even when brightness level is set on 50% the picture was clear and sharp. The only downside of this product is that to change the focus when placing the unit in different distance from the well you need to do it “manually” using the focus wheel located on the front side of the S3 Unit.

Final verdict

The S3 is a good product. I really enjoyed using it for watching YouTube and streaming movies. Device Performance, sound, picture quality were all good.
