Virgil sits on the roof of the Mind Palace Inn, leaning back against the chimney. The sky darkens overhead, thick lilac-grey clouds blocking out the sun. Virgil flicks a pebble, watching it bounce down the metal-and-wood roof only to disappear as it tumbled over the edge. He flicks another one and watches that one, too, fall. One of the round windows of the restaurant is turned slightly in its frame, open just enough to let the voices inside the building filter out. Virgil tunes the noise out; it’s not important, and besides most of the customers are gone.

A voice catches his attention, and he turns his head slightly to hear them better.

“-don’t know how you do it, Thomas. How you manage to keep the inn afloat and raise a felon- fellow like Virgil is… beyond my understanding.”

“Manage it? I’m at the end of my rope. Ever since his pa left u- left, he… hasn’t recovered. And it’s not like- you know how smart he is; he built his first solar surfer when he was eight!”

Virgil lets out a small huff; a mockery of a laugh.

“But he’s still… He’s failing in school. He’s constantly getting in trouble, and I try to talk to him, but- he’s just… he’s like a stranger, Logan. I just… I don’t know. I’ve tried everything.”

Virgil doesn’t hear Logan’s reply; right then a small craft flies overhead, the sound of a failing engine drowning out all other noise. It’s not very big; an orb with fins to stabilize flight, only big enough for one person. Virgil watches it shudder and crash at the end of the dock, on the other end of the cliff, smoke billowing out of it. It rests precariously on the edge, and despite his better judgement Virgil finds himself slipping off the roof, landing in a crouch and running to help whoever just crash-landed on his proverbial front lawn.

Virgil reaches the craft quickly and knocks a little frantically on the door, his heart fluttering and pounding in his chest anxiously. “Hey, anybody in there? Hey! You okay?”

A reptilian hand presses against the window and Virgil flinches, taking a couple cautionary steps back. The door opens and an old greying salamander with four sharp incisors stumbles out with a small chest, wearing a coat and captain’s hat. He grips Virgil by his hoodie, pulling him close and looking up at the sky, looking around as if searching for a threat.

“He’s coming. Can’t you hear him?” He rasps out. “Those gears and gyros clickin’ and whirrin’ like the devil himself-!” He lets go of Virgil to pick up his chest, coughing roughly. Virgil swallows.

“You uh- you hit your head?”

“He’s after me chest.” The salamander grouses. He tries to pick it up but settles with dragging it alongside him. “That cyborg and his band of cut-throats…” He tries once more to pick up the chest, grimacing as he settles it on his shoulder. “They’ll have to pry it from old Billy Bones’ cold, dead fingers-!” He grabs at his chest, letting out a strangled cough and falling to his knees, dropping the chest. He continues to hack and cough, and Virgil steps forward, frowning with concern.

“Ah shit… Come on, gimme your arm.” He lifts the salamander’s arm and gets underneath it, helping to support his weight and helping him towards the Inn. “That’s it, come on…” It’s hard, and it takes longer than Virgil would have liked, but this salamander man is easily two or three times as big as him and he’s just grateful the alien hasn’t died or collapsed on top of him. Rain starts to pour as they leave the dock and reach the base of the walkway up to the Inn.

“Dad’s gonna love this….”

Mr. Shae observed the rain pouring outside for a moment with a frown. He moved to a dial by the window and turned it one notch, watching as the window shimmered before becoming a sandy beach at sunset. He turned it once more and let it settle on a bright field of wildflowers, glancing over at Logan as he pulled his coat on.

“Thanks for listening, Logan. It helps.” Thomas lets out a heavy sigh as he sits at the table the other had just vacated. Logan glances at Thomas with a slight frown before walking over to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “It’s…. It’s alright, Thomas. It’s going to be okay, I’m sure of it.”

Mr. Shae looks up at him and smiles, the image of a worn and weary single parent, hand idly playing with a locket around his neck. Logan takes a step back, picking up his books and preparing to leave.

“I keep dreaming that one day I’ll open that door and… He’ll be back to the way he was. A happy, smiling little boy, holding some animal he’d found and begging me to let him keep it.”

Logan frowns and opens the front door, revealing Virgil, who’s just barely holding up a nearly unconscious Billy Bones.

Mr. Shae gasps, standing as Virgil enters the Inn, practically dragging the salamander inside. “Virgil Alexander Shae, we-!”

Virgil gently let go of the salamander so he rests on the ground and Logan rushes to shut the door. “Dad! He’s hurt.” Mr. Shae frowns with concern and rushes to his son’s side. The salamander lets out a ragged breath, looking at Virgil.

“Me chest…”

Virgil grabs the chest and pushes it over to the salamander, who starts punching a code into the buttons with alien writing. “He’ll be coming soon…” The chest opens, and the salamander takes out an orb wrapped in a dark cloth. “I can’t let them find this!” He rasps out, holding it close and inspecting the cloth for signs of damage.

Virgil’s eyebrows furrow. “Who’s coming? What are you-”

The salamander grips Virgil’s shirt and pulls him forward, whispering in his ear. “The cyborg… Beware… The cyborg....” He lets go of Virgil and slowly slumps to the floor, letting out a final breath as his eyes close. Thomas gasps softly as his hand relaxes its hold on the orb and it rolls out onto the floor.

A low wailing, the telltale sign of a ship passing over, invades the air as a spotlight dances across the Inn’s windows. Virgil snags the orb and stuffs it into his pocket, looking up to see if he can spot the craft from any of the windows. His palms start to sweat and his heart beats faster. This isn’t good; if the salamander was right, that was probably some blood-thirsty maniac hell-bent on getting… whatever this thing was in his pocket. He couldn’t let that happen. He didn’t know why, but he had a bad feeling about it.

He moved over to one of the windows - all of which still held the illusion of a bright field of flowers - and turned the dial ever so slightly to create a small gap in the image. He glanced out, catching the silhouette of several large aliens as lightning flashed overhead. He let the field restore itself and grabbed his dad’s hand, pulling him up the stairs.

“We gotta go. Now.”

Thomas let out a sound of surprise, but followed him nonetheless. Logan reached for the door handle, ever the curious one, just as a light canon blasted right through it and burnt a hole in the door. Logan’s heart skipped a beat and he turned to race up the stairs, following Virgil and Mr. Shae.

More light canon blasts shot through the Inn, damaging furniture and severing the ties to the light fixtures. The large chandelier fell to the ground, knocking a lantern over in its descent which caught the floor ablaze. The front door burst open and men flooded in, throwing destroyed furniture out of their way in their search. The cyborg paused over the body of Billy Bones and scowled at the sight of his empty chest.

Logan pushed the window to Virgil’s room open, the sound of the rain hitting stone echoing in his ears. He looks down at his cart, calling out to the creature strapped to it.

“Delilah!” The creature looked up - a strange likeness to an armless dinosaur if it had frog’s skin - and made a sound of happiness, jumping slightly to reach her master. “Delilah, don’t move!” He called out.

Down below, pirates were tearing the Inn apart, searching every drawer, cupboard, and room for their prize.

“Where is it?!”

“It has to be here somewhere!”

The cyborg growled. “Find it!” He pointed up the stairs.

Virgil looked over his shoulder at the sound of the cacophonous war cries coming from the crew, their shadows caught in the growing fire’s glow and dancing across the wall behind him. His eyes widened and he gripped the open door with increasing strength and rigidity, his fingers going numb.

“Don’t worry Thomas, I’m an expert of physical science. On the count of three, jump. One,” Virgil heard his dad give half-hearted protests, observing the jump with hesitance. “t-” Virgil took a running leap at the pair, pushing them out of the window. “Three!”

Logan and Mr. Shae landed in the front seat, Logan immediately grabbing Delilah’s reins. Virgil crash-landed in the back, turning over to look up at his bedroom window engulfed in fire. Logan pulled on the reins and Delilah took off, leaving the sight of the fire-engulfed Inn burned into Virgil’s retinas.

Solstice of Heroes

Moments of Triumph

Moments of Triumph bounties will become available in-game for the Solstice of Heroes event starting July 31, 2018.

Players may access a set number of Triumphs on Bungie.net prior to the event beginning.

Players can complete Triumphs to earn points that they can trade for rewards such as emblems, a Sparrow, and a code to purchase a special T-shirt.

When the summer event becomes available on July 31, 2018, players can receive these Triumph bounties from the special summer event vendor and will have the entirety of the event to complete them.

Triumphs are based on account-specific data; once a Triumph has been claimed and redeemed for points, it cannot be claimed for points on another character.

All Triumphs can be tracked via bungie.net; the highest values of a character on that account will be displayed.

In-game rewards will become available on July 31, 2018. Stay tuned to @Bungie for announcements of availability.

Exotic Masterworks

Catalysts for Legend of Acrius, Telesto, and Sleeper Simulant are now available as rewards from Prestige “Leviathan,” Prestige “Leviathan, Eater of Worlds,” and Prestige “Leviathan, Spire of Stars,” respectively.

Exotic catalysts from Heroic strikes now have slightly higher drop chances.

The Skyburner’s Oath Exotic catalyst from the “Leviathan” raid now has slightly higher drop chances.

The catalyst for Sturm can now be found by defeating enemies on Nessus.

Miscellaneous Quality-of-Life Changes

Adjusted Escalation Protocol weapon reward chances to be more deterministic

Players improve their chances each time they defeat the boss.

Once all Mercury Forge weapons have been obtained, they become available for direct purchase from Brother Vance in the Lighthouse (second vendor page).

Momentum has been removed from Heroic adventures.

The “Pursuits” inventory bucket has been moved to the top of Inventory categories.

Fixed an issue where unequippable emotes could be selected.

Commas have been added to large numbers as separators on the IGCR and PGCR.

Strike Modifiers

Blackout: Now increases enemy melee damage significantly but is no longer a guaranteed one-shot kill for all players.

Glass: Slightly reduced the health and shield penalty.

Grounded: Significantly reduced incoming damage when you are airborne, to account for odd geometry that Guardians may not have any control over.

Developer Insight: The goal is to ensure these modifiers are noticeable, but when Guardians advance their Power and stats, they can notice themselves overcoming the debuffs.

The Nightfall tutorial experience for new players has been updated to no longer call out pre-1.1.3 Nightfall mechanics.

Each week, there is a curated weapon suite and a global activity modifier for Spire of Stars and Eater of Worlds Prestige. The weapon set and modifier will be the same across both activities.

Prestige Eater of Worlds will become available at 11 a.m. PDT on July 17, 2018.

Prestige Spire of Stars will become available at 10 a.m. PDT on July 18, 2018.

Prestige raid lairs will drop weapons at 400 Power and Exotic catalysts.  

Raid armor ornaments will become unlockable.

The higher you climb, the tougher the opponent!

Glory Loss Streaks have been re-tuned to be less punishing over time.

Consecutive losses now decrease the Rank Points lost instead of increasing.

Streaks still cap out at five.

All Rank Streaks no longer reset once they hit their cap.

Summer Event Engram

For the duration of Solstice of Heroes, players will earn a bonus Solstice Engram with each Prototype Engram earned through Prestige level-up.

When decrypting Solstice Engrams, players will receive new items until they’ve unlocked all items in the box. Once all items have been acquired, additional Solstice Engrams will award duplicate items. Players may track what items they’ve earned from the Solstice Engram through the engram’s preview.

New item type: armor glows. Players who earn the Solstice of Heroes armor sets may use armor glows obtained from Eververse or the Solstice Engram.

Armor glows illuminate portions of the Solstice of Heroes armor and shine brightest when the element of the armor glow and the Guardian’s subclass align.

Once obtained, armor glows may be used and re-used on any Solstice of Heroes armor piece, regardless of class.

During Solstice of Heroes, players may purchase event-exclusive items from Eververse for Bright Dust.

Prismatic Matrix

The Prismatic Matrix has been temporarily removed. It will return in Season 4.

Prismatic facets have been deprecated. Dismantling deprecated Prismatic facets will grant Bright Dust.

HDR Calibration

In order from earliest to most recent in terms of publication, and not including my random Mass Effect: Andromeda fics, here are mine!

1. The World Turned Upside Down (Ellana x Solas - multi-chapter Hamilton-inspired retelling of DA:I, Trespasser, and beyond)

Solas knew he was in trouble - real trouble - the day Haven fell.

Not because there was truly no denying Corypheus’s existence now. Not because of all the dead bodies in the snow. Because of Ellana Lavellan.

2. Domestic Life (previous Ellana x Solas - current Adoribull. Dorian POV one-shot.)

Dorian got to the border town villa ahead of Ellana - no surprise, since she was coming through wilderness to reach it. He still didn’t much like the idea of her traveling alone, not since the loss of her arm and thus her ability to use her bow and all her related skills, but when he told her as much through the crystal, he couldn’t exactly disagree with her response.

“I probably have less to fear from his forces than any of you.”

That was how she always referred to Fen’Harel - Solas - That Asshole. Just him.

3. She Moved Through the Fair (Ellana x Solas - NSFW restored Elvhenan one-shot.)

Solas woke to sunshine, the sound of the wind rushing through the curtains of their bedroom, the music of a nearby spirit, but no Ellana. For a moment his stomach fell, and then he heard her laugh.

"Finally. I thought the whole point of tearing down the Veil was that you wouldn't sleep the day away wandering the Fade."

4. Body of Knowledge (Ellana x Solas; multi-chapter smut and complicated relationship exploration fest in a post-Trespasser setting)

**slight NSFW in this part - couldn’t help but post a bit more here because this is my favorite opening out of all of them, except for maybe Awakened**

Ellana would be lying if she didn't admit she had a habit of staring at Solas’s lips.

So much of him was sharp and austere - his cheekbones, his shaved head, his expressions, his clothes. His lips were luxurious by comparison. Soft. Almost obscene. Too beautiful, too beckoning, to be on display for the whole world. They were where he showed so many emotions he otherwise kept private - amusement, fear, frustration. Desire.

Many nights in the last four years since Corypheus’s defeat had been spent remembering them. The way they quirked into a smile, the way they moved when he spoke Elvhen, the way they felt on her collarbone, her wrist, her cheek. Her mouth. Her sex.

Those memories were shards of colored glass. Sharp fragments too precious to throw away and too jagged to hold close. She didn't summon them on purpose but she didn't run from them.

And now?

5. “Say Yes To This” (Ellana x Solas; their first night together, retold through Ellana’s eyes; NSFW, obviously)

Screaming - mud and blood and death and fear and nothing would ever be right again - the weight , the absolute weight of it all - not just the dragon on top of her chest but everything - dead dead dead soldiers crying out for the Herald, the sound of the mountain coming down on Haven, on her, the eyes of the Winter Palace, the war table tokens in her hand - Keeper Deshanna’s words as she left - we will be waiting on you, da’len - dimly she thought someone was calling her name but it didn't matter - it was just someone else to let down, another body for the sucking mud beneath her, more fingers to reach up and drag her down -

6. Awakened (Ellana x Solas; Ashara x Lucius; character-driven drama in which the Anchor is still killing Ellana and her daughter, Ashara is trying to save her)

Lucius Talvas would never forget the sound of his little brother's skull when it hit the cobblestones of Vyrantium's streets.

Erast was only eight. He did not understand that the elf who pushed him out the window had been beaten down, too. Then again, the elf didn't understand that the boy he tossed so easily, so carelessly, had also known days of hunger and fear. That though his ears were round, he was no stranger to want.

"Now you know that I do not play, human," the elf said. "Give me your money or -"

Lucius set the elf on fire, of course.

7. “Ruin” (pre-relationship Ellana and Solas one-shot; NSFW at end)

Solas was not terribly impressed by their Herald of Andraste. The bearer of his mark. Not at first.

He could not stop seeing a slave whenever he looked at her.

She was too skinny, clearly underfed, and marked for all to see. She had no magic, except for the twisted mark of his orb. She was the symbol of his failure.

He couldn't look at her, sometimes.

8. “The Story of an Hour” (background Ellana x Solas; a Cullen POV one-shot about Solas as a father to a young Ashara)

Cullen was proud of what he’d built in Ferelden. So proud that it didn’t even occur to him to be nervous about hosting Ellana, Solas, and their daughter when she wrote to him saying she had business near him, but could spare some time for an old friend.

Not until the day they arrived, of course.

9. “When you love someone, you don’t stop” (previous Ellana x Solas; Ellana at the Winter Palace)

Ellana knew, on some level or another, that letting Varric write about them was probably a mistake.

It was definitely a mistake to double-down on what he said in the book, once people started asking if it was really true.

10. “No One Else” (widowed Solas in Orlais, celebrating the wedding of one of his daughters; an AU of Awakened)

The Dales were beautiful in springtime, and the chateau Solas found himself in complemented that vernal beauty perfectly - and in the midst of spring beauty and song and cheer and toasts raised to his daughter’s wedding, Solas found himself grieving for Ellana.

I put a lot of thought into the first lines of each story; for me, they always have to start directly in a character’s head, and they always have to point directly at the central conflict of the story/of that character. I’m more successful in some fics (Awakened is the one I am most proud of) than I am in others (Body of Knowledge gets there, but you can see I had to copy a bit more to show it. But who doesn’t want porn of Solas’s lips??). I’m please overall, looking at these, to see that most of them fit what I was going for!

There is another software program running in Compatibility Mode

After you have upgraded your computer system to a newer operating system such as Windows 10 or 8, the compatibility settings might not be set correctly for some programs or files. The operating system was upgraded without reinstalling the McAfee Antivirus software products
