The National Art School of Havana, promoted by Fidel Castro and Ernesto Guevara following a golf game, stands as a unique architectural work of the second half of the 20th century in Cuba. Designed by architects Ricardo Porro, Roberto Gottardi, and Vittorio Garatti with budgetary freedom and independence, it faced criticism for its cost and design, leading to the abandonment of the construction in 1963. For decades, the incomplete structures suffered decay until preservation efforts began in the 21st century.

Hi archy! This semester my project takes place in Cuba. I am stuck on how I want to represent their identity and culture into my design. I am interested in designing in both Havana and Miami to highlight the Cuban influence in both cities. Are there any case studies or inspiration that might help me better approach my designing process? P.S. Thank you for your inspirational posts!

Plaza Vieja

Old Havana is centered around five main plazas (Plaza de Armas, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de San Francisco, Plaza del Cristo, and Plaza de la Catedral) and includes architecture from many styles including baroque, art deco, neoclassical and art nouveau to mention a few.Wrought-iron gates, internal courtyards, and balconies adorn the cobblestone plazas and have been preserved through the centuries. 

Tropical architecture, sustainable before the term was coined by marketers, uses cross breezes, deep overhands, open colonnades and high ceilings to make many of the the buildings comfortable in the tropical setting without the use of HVAC systems.

Cuba was the most important island in the Caribbean and many resources from the Spanish colonizers where invested there. Do not reduce Cuban architecture to art deco because of its connections to Miami. Cuban architecture is rich and eclectic and deserves a closer look. here are some important building from its history:
