While his sister goes to college, and his mom startings dating again, Scott Carlin must try to find a sense of direction. Semi-autobiographical for Pete (his dad died on 9/11, the movie changed when/how he died to disconnect it from a national tragedy and make it more personal and about Pete/Scott’s grief. Pete has also said this movie was a way for him to work through emotions and feelings surrounding that event), it imagines what life could’ve have been if he hadn’t gotten into comedy. For Apatow this was a movie about generational differences and parents not knowing how to help their kids through problems they’ve never had to face, and this movie did seem closer to This is 40 and Funny People. The initial scene in the basement, and scenes with Scott and his friends contrasted well with scenes of his mom and Ray’s budding relationship, and his sister’s graduation party and at school/parties, showing him sort of floundering around; and definitely contrasted nicely with scenes of him at the firestation and walking Ray’s kids to school (awww the relationship he developed with them, that superhero sketch, the daughter singing that song from Oklahoma and Scott know where the song was from!😆) I felt bad for the old security guard guy 😕 Scott and Kelsey’s first conversation in her bedroom was sad/sweet; their scenes on the ferry at the end were sweet (though did I hear the question wrong or did she get the math problem wrong?). Comedian Ricky Velez is slowly settling into the life of more sunshine and space, all while adjusting to new levels of attention courtesy of his breakout role in “The King of Staten Island,” Judd Apatow’s semi-biographical film about the life of Pete Davidson (who happens to be Velez’s real-life best friend). Velez both acted in the film and worked with Apatow on the script, and, revealed earlier this month, will star in his own HBO comedy special executive produced by Apatow.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ In the film, as in real life, Davidson’s father was a firefighter who died in the 9/11 attacks. Velez lost his own mother four years ago on Valentine’s Day, when she died suddenly. Putting out an honest conversation on mental health was important to Velez — and it made the creative process all the more challenging, he says.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ “I would say there were parts that were definitely hard. Being Pete’s friend, I definitely know a lot more than a lot of other people. So it felt like we were kind of letting people in on our secrets. The scene when he’s driving with his eyes closed, that was a scary time in our lives. Putting that out there was terrifying, honestly. But it’s helping a lot of people,” Velez says. “I think a lot of people either know somebody or deal with mental illness daily. And this makes people understand it a little bit more about loss and grieving. It’s a cool movie.
