“Mr. Knox (so he introduced himself) epitomizes the anachronistic Virginian high class I told you about when describing Glew: Nothing about him belongs to this era—not his car, not his hair, not his handshake, nor his accent (says Niamh). However, framed in the doorway of Axton House, he fit perfectly. Had he rung the doorbell of my old apartment, I would have mistaken him for a time traveler.” x “A house with supernatural enhancements, as I think Edith Wharton put it.” x “I never understood that penchant among treasure keepers and ancient civilizations of putting the golden idol on an altar in an empty room. It's like telling Indiana Jones, ‘Hi, here's our most prized possession, ready for you to steal.” x “A.: Whatever; you must know how it works. An artifact containing...raw feelings, unprocessed sights and sounds and pains that the brain interprets—is that too crazy? DR.BELKNAP: No. It has existed for thousands of years. It's called a book.” x Edgar Cantero’s first book in english, epistoletory (told in transcripts, letters, journal entries, video/audio recordings, and other documents) it tells the story of A who, after inheriting an old house from a long lost relative, sets out to find out the secrets of both it and the long lost relative. With lessons on ciphers and codes along the way, the revelations about the house, relative and his group of friends were Very interesing. Cantero did a really nice job of setting up the atmosphere of the old (almost ancient seeming) house, the cluttered dusty labyrinth A and his housemate Niamh can get lost in. And there’s a hedge maze!! (the house, just the descriptions of it alone) reminded me of the houses in Ready or Not and Knives Out. The ending, which i wasn’t expecting, reminded me of The Wicked and the Divine. I wana get all Cantero’s books. Sigh. #WhatIRead #Bookstagram #LibraryBook #EdgarCantero #TheSupernaturalEnhancements https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb0cWNguyOY/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Go ahead, take your shoes off, Let's do a pajama party like the old times. We'll build a pillow fort and ask the Magic Eight Ball who will we marry.’ ‘We never did that,’ Andy complained, undoing her boots. ‘You wouldn't do it; it's too unscientific. Instead you tried to explain genetics to me to determine who we should marry to spawn superdetectives.” x “The motel slept in silence, all the guests probably busy counting stolen money or chopping up corpses in the bathtub.” x “Andy was sure there was a company in England, possibly founded by a society of African explorers in the Victorian era, a bunch of Colonel Mustards with pith helmets and friendly mutton chops, who manufactured this high-tier field equipment especially for kids, aware that young explorers like Kerri must not be patronized with cheap plastic toys, but be offered the best durable tools to encourage their vocation, because those curious children shall be the great discoverers of tomorrow.” x “Looks like the place of an old lady who never got married.’ ‘That's Puritan for 'witch,' Nate said, and he knocked again.” x “Pierce was the name she had just given to the pickax, the tool-slash-accessory-slash-slasher weapon that had become her dearest item in their arsenal.” x read this one at the suggestion of an ex-coworker, and whoo boy - glad I finally did. A group of kids who solved mysteries while on vacations a decade ago are now grown up and have come back to make sure their final case is Closed. Set in the 1990, Cantero got the tone and atmostphere of the time right (A Bunch of good oneliners, and at one point a character takes a pictures and shakes it to develop because it’s a polaroid (omg nostalgia)) The cover was cool, and when going back to the library to get his first english language book The Supernatural Enhancements (that cover too omg) I also picked up his third book This Body’s Not Big Enough for Both of Us - so excited to dive into both! “If New York is the city that never sleeps, Los Angeles in the middle of the night and early wee hours of the morning turns back into the desert it was before it got paved over with concrete. A lone coyote digging through a public garbage pail demonstrates how correct that thought is.” x “I've tried it both ways, and I'm just a tiny bit better when I don't break character. And if I can be a tiny bit better, I want to be.” x “When a man of principle battles a scoundrel, the scoundrel always at first has the upper hand. Because there are some things the man of principle won't do. While the scoundrel will do whatever it takes. That is, until the man of principle is pushed past his breaking point and beyond his nature. Most of Greek tragedy, half of all English theater, and three-quarters of American cinema operated from this premise.” x “Well, if by old-timey days, you mean television eight ago, yeah,’ he says” x “Rick goes for the imaginary pistol hanging off his hip, as Trudi on the other end of the receiver yells, ‘Bang bang bang!’ Rick lets out an excruciating scream as he falls to the linoleum floor of his kitchen, clutching his face as if that's there Johnny shot him. On the other end of the phone, Trudi asks, ‘What was that?’ On the floor of his kitchen, Rick tells her, “I acted like I got shot in the face.’ She coos an enthusiastic ‘Oooh, good idea.” x heard about this book from #Tarantino’s episode of the #ConanOBrienNeedsAFriend podcast, and was able to get it from the library. I’d have to watch the movie again but it was cool to get more background on the characters in the film and 1960s Hollywood and before. Once again Tarantino shows how much of a classic movie and tv nerd boy he is, but that’s cool, i added a bunch of movies/tv shows to my list of things to check out. I want a shirt with the little drawing and note Dalton did for little Quentin! and no Red Apple cig commercials at the end, whew! #WhatIRead #Bookstagram #LibraryBook #OnceUponATimeInHollywood https://www.instagram.com/p/CZxzINeuFTC/?utm_medium=tumblr

When her research about the Tears of the Moon (a tree who’s petals can supposedly cure any illness or injury, and lift any curse) and request for access to a newly discovered arrowhead that may help locate it are rejected by the Royal Society, Dr. Lily Haughton and her brother MacGregor …free… it from their archives and go looking for the tree themselves. They reach the Brazil and hire a steamboat skipper named Frank to take them down the Amazon in search of the legendary Lâgrimas de Cristal tree. Based on another Disney ride (like PotC, The Haunted Mansion, the made-for-TV Tower of Terror movie, etc.) A friend said it was basically a copy of The Mummy (Lily, MacGregor and Frank = Evelyn, Jonathan, and Rick) and the Pirates of the Caribbean (spoiler alert: the curse), but was glad they kept the backside of water joke was kept. Kind of predictable - not a masterpiece, but watchable, though someone else said they liked it more than they thought they were going to, so see it and decide for yourself? I thought the jokes taken from the scripts used by skippers from the actual ride were funny, the scene with Lily sneaking through the archives room - nervewracking, mygod; and the amazonian scenery was pretty, but it was kind of blah, I wish it’d’ve had more practical effects (beyond what Frank used when we first see him) because there was a lot of obvious CGI. like a lot a lot (that jaguar fight🙄, those river dolphins though!), things could’ve been grubbier? more used? dirtier? it all looked real clean and amusement parkish. Franks story and the time lapse to go with it were nicely done, if a bit sad. What Giamatti passion project is this Disney money going towards and there are more species on a tree in the Amazon than where?! where?! One summer day’s tale of a boy and girl. With the help of an orb Nazuna finds in the ocean, she and fellow student Norimichi get the chance to redo some things, basically an adolescent Groundhogs Day. with the help of the orb. I thought the animation was so pretty, but the story was a bit garbled for me? I watched this one because someone said it was one of the worst, if not the worst, film/s they’d ever seen, I may have to go try and find the 50 min live action tv movie it was based on and see if I’d understand either any better. I’m not sure if Nazuna was actually being abused, or it was just implied she was, which is sad and isolating - kind of like the train they ended up on again and again, having to hide from her parents and his friends. And that story she tells about her parents/mother…😔(was the idol her mother listened to Princess Peach though?) I was never clear Why the shape of the fireworks mattered SO much, how there were different “timelines” or “worlds” (how were we as the audience s’posed to know that?), or how they (along with the city) got to be Inside the lighthouse at the end? Throughout the movie the orb seemed to change size, as did the train (and it was driving itself at one point?). I watched this movie multiple times and I don’t know if the kids were on drugs, or if I was… The animation Was pretty though, especially for the orb and all the water. #anime #animation #drama #fantasy #SuzuHirose #MasakiSuda #MamoruMiyano #ShintarôAsanuma #ToshiyukiToyonaga #YûkiKaji writers: #ShinjiIwai (1993 teleplay) #HitoshiÔne (screenplay) directors: #AkiyukiShinbo (as #AkiyukiShibbô) #NobuyukiTakeuchi (co-director) movie of 2021 number 4) #Fireworks #FireworksShouldWeSeeItFromTheSideOrTheBottom? https://www.instagram.com/p/CZGoSw1OzTH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Silence is not enough.
After an opening flashback to the day of the alien invasion this one picks up almost right where the last one left off. The Abbotts move on from their farm, destroyed in the first one, making it to a nearby foundry; where neighbor Emmett has taken up residency. While an injury and need for supplies stalls Evelyn, Marcus and the baby, Regan and a reluctant Emmett go in search of the song thats being broadcast on the radio. My Only notes for this movie state: “all that backstory👌🏼“ and “that first scene in the store - omg - signs” so I must’ve been more interested in the movie than taking any notes (even on a rewatch) 😆🤦🏼‍♀️. Once again I thought it did a really really good job of integrating sound and letting the audience hear from different perspectives. #MillicentSimmonds did a phenomenal job yet again, and I’m glad Emmett chose to help her Regan instead of just bringing her back to her family. Their battle with the group in the marina was scary! but they worked so well together to get out of it! Them finally reaching the origin of the song, the further backstory they get there, and how this film ends seem like things that could definitely happen if this were to ever happen in real life — always check they’re all taken care of and “double tap” if needed! Also - was there Absolutely no where else they could’ve hidden in that foundry? If you could do the towel, why not some tubes for breathing?! But overall I really liked this one and am curious to see where a third one would go with this story. #drama #horror #scifi #thriller #aliens #ssmovieof2021 #EmilyBlunt #NoahJupe #CillianMurphy #DjimonHounsou #OkierieteOnaodowan #ScootMcNairy

Brilliant. Bad. And a little Mad. The DeVil wears Dalmation. The origin story of Cruella (duh). Though the original animated feature (featuring an ADULT Cruella) came out in 1961, this one is set in 60s/70s London (the sets, props, music and costumes were all fantastic) and #EmmaStone and #EnmaThompson were both perfect as Estella and The Baroness respectively. It’s like a Devil Wears Prada if Andi had become the thing she sought to destroy, or if that movie and Oceans 8 had a baby. And though it’s a well done origin story, did it have to be Cruella? (I mean because Disney made it, yes, apparently) did we need to know Cruella’s backstory? Especially when, for me, it left such a gap from where this one ends to where the original began (even with the little connetions to the original - seeing Anita and Estella at school, Roger being The Baroness’ lawyer, Estella partnering up with Horace and Jasper (who in the original were brothers?), Estella giving Anita and Roger dalmation puppies, her car…) That all being said, I liked it more than I expected. The wardrobe department hit it out of the park (though that one outfit they let The Duchess wear to the London Gala? Ew.), and Estella’s scheme with that signature dress - wowza; also her plan at the end, ooohhhmmmyyygawd, all the work that went into both, holy crap - both were genius. I’m not disapppinted I saw it, but also wouldn’t run out and buy it either — the Disney/it being Cruella thing (yes I know they gave Maleficient some movies/a backstory too) is still weird to me #ssmovieof2021 #adventure #comedy #crime #JoelFry #PaulWalterHauser #JohnMcCrea #EmilyBeecham #MarkStrong #KayvanNovak #KirbyHowellBaptiste #TipperSeifertCleveland writers: #DodieSmith (based on the novel “101 Dalmations” by) #DanaFox, #TonyMcNamara (sreenplay by), #AlinBroshMcKenna #KellyMarcel, #SteveZissis (story by) director: #CraigGillespie movie of 2021 number 2) #Cruella https://www.instagram.com/beasybrecht/p/CY7gCpgFQ-u/?utm_medium=tumblr

Five hundred years after the last dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity and defeat the Druun, Raya of the Heart Tribe, must attempt to reunite all the pieces of the shattered Dragon Gem, locate the Last Dragon and defeat the Druun once more. The animation for this one, from the opening history lesson, to the different plans to infiltrate Fang for their gem piece, to the end credits (that song!) and everything in between. I thought #Awkwafina was the perfect choice for Sisu. The story of how Sisu and her siblings first defeated the Druun (and the new group attempting the same) brought me to tears, each time I watched it. It took me tooo long to realize Raya was collecting people from the different tribes but much like Sisu getting all her siblings powers as the gem pieces are reunited, the group all work together to defeat the Druun, each doing their bit, emphasizing the need for a unified nation Kumandra once again. I want a TukTuk! and that grappling hook/“detachable” sword thing Raya’s dad had. I would buy this one, if only to remind myself that I should trust and try to work with people more (which in this current, hopefully temprorary moment of my life, I might need). #ssmovieof2021 #animation #action #adventure #KellyMarieTran #IzaacWong #GemmaChan #DanielDaeKim #BenedictWong #SandraOh #LucilleSoong

“Honestly, Patricia, relax. Pick your battles. No one’s going to die if they don’t eat every meal at the table or if they don’t havw clean underwear one day.’
‘And what if that’s the day they get hit by a car?’ Grace asked.
‘If Ben Jr. got hit by a car I think you’d have bigger problems than the condition of his underpants,’ Maryellen said.” x “But if the police think it was an accident…’ Patricia began.
‘The police think all kinds of things,’ Mrs. Greene said. ‘Doesn’t necessarily make them true.’” x “It’s a child a year, for three years,’ Patricia said. ‘I know they’re not our children, but they’re children. Are we not supposed to care about them because they’re poor and black?” x “The last time we did this we learned one thing,’ Patricia said. ‘The men stick together. Their friendship with him is stronger now than it was then. There’s only us.” x was really excited to see this one when it was published and finally got around to reading it. connected to one of his previous books (My Best Friend’s Exorcism; same neighborhood, a few years later), it definitely captured the atmosphere of the time (late 80s/early 90s) and made me think of Stranger Things and Salem’s Lot. Ladies gettin’ it done, For The Win. I really liked it. (also got a bunch more titles to add to my to read list 😆🤦🏼‍♀️, thanks Grady!) #Bookstagram #WhatIRead #LibraryBook #GradyHendrix #TheSouthernBookClubsGuideToSlayingVampires #vampires

A “Choose Your Own Adventure” interative special, just like the book she finds hidden in her backpack, Jan. Realizing the date it was checked out, and that none of her bunkermates brought it down with them, leads Kimmy to believe there may be another bunker/more girls “tooken” by the Reverend, meaning she must face him once again, days before her wedding to Prince Frederick. I watched this maybe 3x, but according to IMDb’s trivia page and ‘multiple entertainment websites’ there are like 18 possible different endings (and there are people credited on IMDb in this I don’t remember seeing, so I may need another rewatch, or three?). The When Harry Met Sally couch spots (even repeated a few times with different couples) were humorous, there were some funny lines (spoiler alert: ‘l’ecole Porcverres’ = Hogwarts in French, Frederick’s history of the pickle, ‘Plane-O the Sky-car’ - her jet) and a bunch of old and new faces (#JohnnyKnoxville, #JoshGroban (omg that voice😆) #DanielRadcliffe, #JackMcBrayer), the interludes and ‘path endings’ were for the most part entertaining (the Cyndee one for one of the Free Bird choices, the options for calling Donna Maria, the wait for Mamadou (4,000 min is only like THREE days!😆 so those were funny/exaggerated)) Overall it cut some of the stuff that seemed to drag during the show, but then could get repetitive at times circling back to the “right” option to move it forward, but it wasn’t the worst. #ssmovieof2020 #lategram #comedy #interactivespecial #EllieKemper #TitusBurgess (omg all his scenes prepping for the movie before he goes with Kimmy😆) #CarolKane #JaneKrakowski #JonHamm #LaurenAdams (Omg the Gretchen end of the phone call) #SaraChase #SolMiranda #DylanGelula #HeidiGardner #FredArmisen #TannerFlood writers: #TinaFey, #RobertCarlock (creator/s, written by), #SamMeans, #MeredithScardino (written by) director: #ClaireScanlon movie of 2020 number 7) #UnbreakableKimmySchmidtKimmyVsTheReverend #KimmyVsTheReverend https://www.instagram.com/p/CNB4PEWHSiX/?igshid=yqrltzbabzny
