Ripplestar’s Rot & The Death of the 5th Oak
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Ripplestar from warrior cats sits against a harsh red background. He has a trail of ginger blotches across his face and down his arm. His paw is raised. A moon is behind his claws.]
Rest in peace you ferocious bastard you woulda LOVED Fire Alone
Ripplestar had heterochromia- one eye was a dull black-brown, the other was a bright amber. He was a mostly black tom with a distinctive "stripe" of broken orange ember spots on the colorful side of his body, right across the amber eye. He was thick for a WindClan-descended cat, with a very thick, plush pelt.
When SkyClan was exiled, not everyone agreed with the Leader’s decisions to just let them leave. The Clerics argued and staged a strike, lead by Larkstripe of WindClan. In response, a new law was passed to limit their power... and Ripplekit was taken from his vow-breaking mother, raised as a brother to Gorsekit and Spottedkit.
Birdflight, welcomed by ShadowClan, waited for years for her mate to send envoys to bring her and her kits ‘home.‘ They never came-- So she and her children realized something must be very wrong. If SkyClan hadn’t found a safe place to live elsewhere, then Ripplestar vowed he would make room.
These are the events of Ripplestar’s Rot.
Content Warning: Someone gets squished like a tomato by a falling tree and there is blood, but no gore
Ripplekit
Birdflight’s kits were too young to bring along on Cloudstar’s Journey. Dawnstar graciously extended an offer to take any SkyClan cats that wanted to stay behind. ShadowClan would always welcome helping claws.
ALL of the clerics were united in their fury at SkyClan’s exile. They knew better than anyone else the importance of keeping 1/5th of StarClan in place.
They kept arguing long after SkyClan had left that a mistake was made. It was a fearful time, with the cats of all Clans terrified that what befell SkyClan could happen to them.
The Leaders decided that since StarClan did not cover the moon on that fateful day, they had spoken. This was divisive; Clerics were the widely accepted interpreters of StarClan... but the leaders were correct about the moon.
And no one had a good answer as to what would be done if SkyClan DID return. Their territory was gone.
The argument almost died down... and then the 5th Oak Tree developed a spot of blight.
Larkstripe of WindClan (Larkwing FQ) organized a strike. They told their leaders, “Next time you get sick, we’ll just let you go to StarClan, so YOU can see what they say if you think you’re so smart.“
There was panic. Panic about the blight, panic about the infighting, panic about the human destruction.
Swiftstar, on his last life and dying of treatable disease, tested Larkstripe's resolve. She told him, "If you live, StarClan is telling me I am wrong. If you die, they will decide your fate. Listen or gamble, it is your newest choice, we will see if you made the right decision last time."
When deputy Dalerunner took power, he decided he must crush the strike.
So, the leaders took hard action and accused the clerics of hypocrisy.
Larkstripe had violated the “Cleric’s Vow” and taken a mate, nursing a single kit. In those days, it was a personal vow, taboo but not forbidden by law.
The strike fell apart after Larkstripe was made into an example. Dalestar accused her publicly, saying that StarClan was not speaking to her because of her violation.
The Cleric’s Vow was ratified into the Code, allowing the leaders to better control their medics.
Ripplekit, about 4 moons at the time, was taken from Larkstripe. Birdflight agreed to adopt him. He missed his mother terribly... but bonded with Gorsekit and Spottedkit.
The blight spread.
Ripplemoon
Larkstripe never got to reunite with her kitten... she died shortly before he became a warrior. Some say of a broken heart.
He had his eyes on leadership from a young age. Dawnstar was determined to allow the three kits to grow up to be loyal ShadowClan warriors.
His family used to speak about how Cloudstar would send warriors to fetch them... the fact they never came alarmed them.
His whole warriorship, Ripplemoon watched the blight climb up the fifth oak tree. Talking about it was taboo, even though it was visibly getting worse.
Ripplemoon was an honorable, thoughtful cat. NEVER afraid to defend his reputation, never refusing a challenge. This type of chivalry was important, in those days.
There was only one time he brought up the oak at a gathering. It descended into argument immediately, the clouds rolling over the moon. He thought it was fitting; that what remained of StarClan was a bunch of petty cowards who couldn’t handle reality.
Or a fight.
Being chosen for deputy was a matter of course. Dawnstar wanted a noble deputy to succeed her, someone who wasn’t afraid to stand up for himself... perhaps she regretted putting Larkstripe down so harshly for doing the same thing, so many years ago.
Ripplestar
He wasted NO TIME getting his bones in a row. Dawnstar was barely cold before that first gathering.
”Something has to be done. Five trees, five Clans. You will shuffle to make way, or I will carve it out.“
They Did Not Listen
It was BLOODY. Ripplestar pushed ShadowClan past the Thunderpath, crushing ThunderClan. WindClan took advantage of the fight and tried to push into ShadowClan. ThunderClan clawed for Sunningrocks and put pressure on RiverClan.
There were defectors from those Clans. Everyone had eyes; they could see the tree dying. Not everyone was loyal to the Clan of their birth. The conflict escalated.
...Gorseclaw saw this carnage. He couldn’t handle it anymore. He met the other leaders in secret, and told them about Ripplestar’s last plan... in exchange for safety, in ThunderClan.
Ripplestar never saw this betrayal coming. Gorseclaw was his brother.
The Full Moon Battle
Ripplestar planned for it to be a surprise blitz, for every gathered warrior to make their alliance known, for elders and apprentices to scatter from the battle... but the leaders only brought their most loyal supporters.
Three Clans against One.
Ripplestar attacked Dalestar at the top of the highrock, tumbling and threatening to spill over the side
Gorseclaw grappled with Spottedpelt, and with a fateful strike that would begin a cycle that haunts his bloodline to this very day, he ended her life and watched his golden-furred sibling fade away.
Just then, lightning crackled out of the sky, striking the 5th Oak at its blighted base. It tumbled forward, and Ripplestar kicked Dalestar off him just in time to realize it was coming right for him.
SQUISH
The oak cracked against the stone where it had killed Ripplestar. One snap at the stump, one snap across the trunk, in a distinct lightning-bolt shape. The same shape that would become Brokenstar’s tail.
Blood dripped down the side of the highrock on both sides, more than there should have been. The moon was red above them.
A horrible curse was laid that night.
The Four Clans would pay for what they’d allowed to happen to SkyClan; and ShadowClan would be rewarded for its harboring of Birdflight by becoming the eye of the storm.
No one else was killed by the falling tree. This was taken as a sign... the four Clans were to remain separate. Three more laws were added to the code, to encourage loyalty and prevent a rebellion like this from ever happening again.

Why Ripplestar mother like that? Like, I doubt that's something normal to say to a child; is she the reason he ended up in the dark forest? Also who is Ripplestar?
Ripplestar is a character from code of the clans, and the reason there is a truce during gatherings because he attacked all of the clans at once, he dies later that battle to a lightning strike sent by starclan.
Now in my own rewrite, Ripplestar used to be from Thunderclan, and his whole life was compared to his ancestor Thunder by his mother, and everyone around him. His mother hated him for the cat he wasn't. The new leader, Finchstar named him Ripplestorm as a reference to Thunder, and that was the last straw. He moves to Shadowclan and quickly rises in the ranks due to his skills and ambitions. The animation takes place during his first gathering as a leader, where his mother confronts him on his life.
Over time, Starclan continues to send signs and prophecies to Ripplestar, nightmares of thunderstorms. Ripplestar finally has enough, and wants to take revenge of Starclan, and attacks all of the clans at once, Thunder, his ancestor, sends the bolt of lightning that takes away eight of his lives, and in desperation, he clings to the great rock to try and save himself, but due to half his body being dead weight, he can't support himself and accidentally declaws himself and plummets to his demise.
Ripplestar becomes the oldest spirit in the dark forest, kept alive through the code that Finchstar created many moons ago.

Code 10 has Thunderclan leader and deputy Finchstar and Daisyheart, Shadowclan leader and deputy Ripplestar and Marshscar, Skyclan leader Hawkstar and former leader Dewstar, Windclan leader Dovestar and Riverclan leader Reedstar. Then Code 11 has Poppycloud and her son Mottlepaw, their leader and deputy Rowanstar and Nightmask, and Oddfoot and Morningmist, all Skyclan. Lionstar and his deputy Greeneyes, as well as Oatwhisker, are Thunderclan.

WARRIOR CODE REDUX: Forest Four
Code 1. Do not hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory — Law of the Land
The canonical rule, now made the first because borders were the first thing established in DotC.
The creation of this rule is exactly the same way it was in canon: Clear Sky was being Clear Sky, and invented borders to make life difficult for the cats of the moor.
Code 2. A true warrior does not need to kill to win their battles — Law of Honor
Another canon rule, now shuffled to be created right after the First Battle. In the Blazing Sky AU, it shook most cats to the core, I mean, they had to make a mass grave they couldn't dig in A DAY. A law was made, the Law of Honor, so that no massacre like the one that happened that day in Fivetrees (canon Fourtrees) would ever happen again.
Code 3. Defend your Clan, even with your life.— Law of Loyalty
The story about Cloudberry and Ryewhisker remains unchanged. However, many cats have willingly gone to the Dark Forest in protest for this law, at least four, including Cloudberry and Ryewhisker themselves.
Code 4. The weak of the Clan are fed first — Prey Priority/Privilege
The story from CotC is removed. This is an extension of the Law of Loyalty. Warriors must provide for their Clan, and the weakest need food. There's nothing deeper than that.
Code 5. Respect prey, StarClan sent it — StarClan's Grace
A minor change: wasting food is sacrilegious, thanking StarClan for the prey is explicitly a prayer.
This was made for a reason: individual warriors may not understand that, if you hunt too much, you won't have any more prey, but this law exists so they don't overhunt.
Code 6. A kitten must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice — Six Moon Rule
Also known as Daisytail's Law, the story remains the same as in canon. Daisytail's son was made an apprentice young because the leader wanted child soldiers, she Didn't Like That, and the rest is history.
Canon!Brokenstar actually loopholes the hell out of this one. It says nothing about early warriors.
(My Brokenstar doesn't do that for Pragmatic Villany Reasons. I find his child soldiers horrifying but ultimately stupid. Small, weak kittens killed in battle don't become grown, powerful warriors, after all.)
Code 7. Deputy Must Mentor/Deputy Becomes Leader/Deputy's Appointed Before Moonhigh — Code of the Deputy
All canon, made into one big law to avoid redundancy. The origin story for these rules is the same: succession crisis in ShadowClan, messy conflict, false sign, and the law is created.
Code 8. Borders must be patrolled and marked daily — Right of Challenge
Instead of being a senseless law, it's part of the Forest Four's Battle Culture.
Borders are set, and Clans can challenge them as they please. Cats that refuse to fight are cowards, Clans that can't defend their territory don't deserve it. Battle! Culture!
Code 9. A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet* — Law of the Wild
Big change! No longer made in response to Pinestar's defection! Instead, Flystar (SkyClan leader before Cloudstar) codified an already-strong feeling, born out of his warriors defecting to become housecats while the rest of his Clan starved.
This is the last law added before SkyClan's exile, and the last one Modern SkyClan shares with the Forest Four.
(Kittypet is a slur in this AU)
Code 10. Seers must never take a mate or have kittens, and place their Clan above all else — Seer's Vow
Now a corruption of a vow, which originally had the intention of making seers value medicine and healing ABOVE their Clan. Added to discredit and hurt Larkstripe, the seer that protested the most against SkyClan's exile. Before that, there was only a gentle taboo.
Code 11. Gatherings are a time of peace, fighting is forbidden — Full Moon Truce
Added in response to Ripplestar's rebellion, as a way to prevent a battle like that from happening again. Before that, it was tradition but not codified yet.
Code 12. Apprentice Must Visit the Moonstone/Warriors Must Sit Vigil — The First Tasks
Another law created to encourage obedience, although in a much softer way than the Seer's Vow or the Law of Loyalty. Before that, both were tradition but not compulsory.
Code 13. The Leader's Word is Law — Leader's Rights.
The big bad one. Also named Dalestar's Commandment. The last law added in response to Ripplestar's rebellion.
Code 14. Kittens Must Be Protected/Queens Don't Have To Reveal The Father — Kittens Protection Law/Queen's Rights
After the drowning of Mapleshade's kittens, StarClan was furious, and summoned Darkstar (RC) and Oakstar (TC) to the Moonstone, damned all the lives they'd lost, and ordered: "Make sure this doesn't happen again, or you're next, StarClan OUT."
Oakstar Did Not Listen, and started the Crusades. But Darkstar did, and correctly realized that protecting the kittens would mean nothing if the mother had to reveal who the father was. So, Queen's Rights (to remain silent) was added as a law.
Also named Darkstar's Commandment.

future leader/deputy pairings for funsies :)
thunderclan
- ivystar (😓) & spotfur
- i don't want squirrelstar. she's old & i'm tired of firestar's lineage shit. ik ivypool is. ivypool. and related to firestar but she's like the only reasonable choice here let's be honest. plus i think it's funny. spotfur is her sister in this au but i think a little sister nepotism is okay. & spotfur would eventually step down & retire. (then twigbranch can become deputy and leader).
shadowclan
- sunstar & lightleap or lightstar & sunbeam
- i have not read asc But. either of these combinations are fantastic. trust me.
skyclan
- dewstar & needleclaw
- dewspring is reliable generic warrior #1736292 & needleclaw is a violetshine baby so she's special To Me and rootspring is too cringefail to be deputy but tbh in this au i might give her rootspring's role & if that's the case then turtlecrawl can be deputy under dewstar
windclan
- smokestar & songleap
- in an ideal world i'd be picking sedgewhisker as future leader of windclan but she's getting a little old (😭😭😭) so i chose a breezepelt clone. her name is funny too. & songleap bc she's a sedgewhisker descendant & i loaf sedgewhisker
riverclan
- erm

Ripplestar, the cat who arguably had the coolest death and whom I attached an entire backstory to since he has none, the backstory is below the read more.
Ok, so for my fanmade backstory, Ripplestar is the direct decendent of Thunder, he can't stand being compared to Thunder and the constant Pressure. Then at his warrior ceremony, the brand new leader of thunderclan, Finchstar, decides to name him RippleSTORM. Fed up with Thunderclan, Ripplestorm runs away to shadowclan, and is very quickly rising the ranks due to his strength and determination. He hears from gathering after gathering of how 'blessed' Thunderclan is and about 'how much better they're doing than shadowclan', as well as having constant dreams of Starclan trying to force him to return to his original clan. Eventually, he has had enough, and when he becomes leader, at the next gathering, ambushes the clans and attempts to kill his former leader as a way to get back at Starclan. His ancestor, Thunder himself, has had enough of his decendant's actions, and strikes him with lightning, taking nearly all his nine lives. Ripplestar stumbles off of the high rock, but manages to grab on with his only functioning front paws, but he cannot support his own weight, and accidentally rips his front claws off, and plummets to his demise.
He refuses to go by his former name, so he still calls himself Ripplestar, despite how much he dislikes Starclan.

How would Dark Forest cats like Tiger(claw)star or Darkstripe or Thistleclaw react to cats like Morningstar or Cloudberry and Ryewhisker? They’re all in the Dark Forest together so it makes sense they should at least know of each other’s existence. How does the evil DF characters react? Do they have positive or negative opinions of the “innocent” DF cats? What are their interactions like? Have they tried to attack each other? What are the evil DF cat’s opinions on the cats who left StarClan as a way of protest?
Also, can cats in the Dark Forest attack / kill each other? This is an addition relating to the question above.
And lastly, is there any difference in Mapleshade for the Bonefall Rewrite? I know about the Call Mapleshade AU but does anything change with her in the Bonefall Rewrite?
Mechanics of the Dark Forest
I mention the mechanics briefly in the StarClan Morality overhaul, but I'll clarify!
Q: Can Dark Forest cats attack each other?
A: Hurt? Yes! Kill? No. A Dark Forest warrior who gets mortally wounded by another spirit simply poofs back into existence the next 'day.' This is usually how they teach the living how to do killing moves.
(little known fact: DF warriors killing each other was a retcon, Snowtuft is horrifically flayed on-screen in early OotS and I refuse to believe he just walked away all hunky-dory.)
The exception to this is going to be during the Great Battle, which I'm going to make the night of the True Eclipse. For one night only, the Dark Forest warriors are as solid as real flesh and bone and can kill and be killed freely. Sol's eclipse in Po3 was just a god-induced preview of what was to come.
Q: How do they meet each other?
You don't run into any cats you're avoiding, and you will not find anyone who does not want to be found. It's Just Magic.
So, despite the fact that Mapleshade is hunting down the cats she 'dragged down with her,' they don't have to deal with her outside of hearing her yowling now and then, or the horror of hearing pounding pawsteps only to turn around and see no one is there.
This question is super dependent on the cat in question. Ryewhisker, Cloudberry, and Morningstar are very friendly and happily greet the unreasonably damned when they're lonely. Darkstripe is horribly lonely but people tend to avoid him after one meeting. You'd think Ripplestar would get along with Thistleclaw, but he actually ripped him to pieces this one time so they don't talk anymore.
So on that note,
Q: What's the general opinions of the cats on each other?
Morningstar is surprisingly disliked at first, just because most cats tend to get sent to the Dark Forest for being dishonorably violent. A "cowardly pacifist" who's just a normal warrior usually gets into StarClan, Morningstar's in a very unique position. The cats who get to know him usually end up changing their minds, like Ravenwing and Appledusk. Cloudberry and Ryewhisker, obviously, have always liked him.
Cloudberry and Ryewhisker are a lovable old couple. Tigerstar and his ilk hate them, but they're so widely beloved by the other denizens that Tiger would never do anything to hurt them. There's no point and he'd just end up alienating a ton of his supporters.
Mudclaw is WIDELY respected. I think he actually kinda likes being there.
Generally, the innocent cats are taken as proof that StarClan's "not that great anyway, who even WANTS to be there anyway!!" Never underestimate the power of sour grapes... but there's exceptions of course. It depends a ton on interpersonal feelings.
Bonefall Mapleshade
Because I stay close to canon for the rewrite, Bonefall Mapleshade is completely separate from Better Call Mapleshade. I like to imagine the difference is heavily based on her environment though (she isn't a fundamentally 'good person' in either incarnation), so if things had been different, she could have become BCMapleshade.
But, she was condemned to the Dark Forest, along with Frecklewish, Appledusk, and Ravenwing. She played up the crowd for sympathy, and StarClan did give her the chance to say goodbye to her beloved kittens, but she charged into the Dark Forest to hunt down her victims forever more... and she did it happily.
She lied to StarClan, too. She said she would be satisfied hunting down the cats who wronged her kittens forevermore, but she's not. She wants MORE revenge, thinks it's not fair that Appledusk's descendants are still in RiverClan, and so haunts them
She's definitely one of the strongest Dark Forest cats, exactly because StarClan sent her off with blessing. She uses this extra power maliciously, making false signs, pushing Stormkit off a rock, starting illnesses, she's a malignant entity.
The biggest change I'm intentionally making here is giving Mapleshade special power on purpose, and making it so Dark Forest warriors can do real, tangible damage to the living through magical means

Russian Blue, Turkish Van, Scottish Fold and Ragdoll for the breed ask? :)
Ragdoll: Who are your favorite and least favorite characters?
Favorite characters: Breezepelt, Yellowfang, Squirrelflight, Twigbranch, Leafstar, Pinestar, Mothwing, Tree, Needletail, Hawkwing, Feathertail, Sasha, Onestar, Dovewing, Crowfeather, Redtail, Barley, Shadowstar and many more
Least favorite: Darkstripe, Lizardstripe, Jacques, Neetle, Redscar, Mapleshade, Thistleclaw, Spottedleaf, Sandgorse, Brightflower, Darkstar(Skyclan leader from cotc)
Love to hate(bonus: fav characters that I hate too): Appledusk, Ripplestar, Rowanstar, Bramblestar, Bluestar, Lionblaze, Brokenstar, Cloudtail, Ashfur, Skystar, Thornclaw
Russian Blue: What moment almost made you stop reading, or was just too ridiculous?
I never stopped reading because it was ridiculous, I always has been pretty good with cringe, until the scene where the Impostor confessed being Ashfur after Squirrelflight fake flirted with him, that was when I stopped reading and almost laugh hysterically
Turkish Van: What’s your favorite headcanon for the series?
I will always be fond of LGBT headcanons, like Trans Rowanstar or Lesbian Mothwing! But I also like family headcanons, like Whitestorm being Greystripe's father(relatives with colors as names together with Bluestar) or I just remembered one where peeing in the river was disrespectful for Riverclan cats! Another one is that Mapleshade is a distant relative of Bluestar
Scottish Fold: What’s one pairing you wish never happened?
I think every couple who didn't had interactions or straight up abusive but not called out, an example would be like Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, because Stormtail and Moonflower or Twigbranch and Finleap were meant to be bad(the first didn't recover and the latter get better), then also Raggedstar and Yellowfang!? The book intended it to being romantic(which is not, he bullied her since Kithood), while in the official warrior cats website they say it was meant to be abusive.... Idk who to trust anymore. Also any incest relationship that were obvious, like Snowbush or Lilyheart, because differently from Dustpelt and Ferncloud(it was never planned that way), it was in the text of the book their parents being siblings(brackenfur and Brighheart)
