La primera diva latina

Dolores del Río

1904-1983

Fue la primera estrella latina que triunfó en Hollywood, fue también una de las actrices emblemáticas de la Época de Oro del Cine mexicano. Su versátil carrera la llevó muy lejos; partió en el cine mudo, se supo adaptar luego a la llegada del cine sonoro, hizo teatro, televisión y radio.

Su nombre de nacimiento es María de los Dolores Asúnsolo y López Negrete. Hija de un acaudalado banquero mexicano, Dolores creció viajando por Estados Unidos y Europa. A los quince años se casó con el escritor Jaime Martínez del Río, un abogado dieciocho años mayor que ella, y cuyo apellido adoptó como nombre artístico.

Fue descubierta en México por el cineasta estadounidense Edwin Carewe y en 1925 desembarcó en Hollywood. En la era del cine mudo llegó a ser considerada como la Rodolfo Valentino femenina. Participó en clásicos del género como Resurrection(1927) y Ramona (1928). Llegó el sonido al cine y el éxito de Dolores se mantuvo, su escena nadando semidesnuda en Ave del Paraíso (1932) escandalizó y deslumbró. Filmó más de 30 películas en Hollywood. Se divorció y se casó con Cedric Gibbons, director artístico de la Metro Goldyn Mayer. Luego se volvió a divorciar cuando conoció y se enamoró de un joven Orson Welles. El apasionado romance terminó mal cuando él la dejó por Rita Hayworth.

Cuando su fama en Hollywood comenzó a decaer,  Dolores volvió a México, y entonces su carrera vivió un segundo aire que le permitió acceder a personajes de carácter, alejados del estereotipo latino que le tocó interpretar tantas veces en Estados Unidos. Dos de los títulos más importantes de su filmografía, Flor Silvestre y María Candelaria, son de 1943, el año que volvió a su país. Durante las décadas de los 40 y 50 la actriz actuó en México, Argentina y España. En los 60 volvió a Estados Unidos yprotagonizó junto a Elvis Presley la película Estrella de Fuego. También trabajó en teatro y en series de televisión.

Murió a los 78 años cuando ya llevaba algunos años fuera de las luces.

Nominees for the 2017 Fashion Awards were “chosen from hundreds of international names and they represent the most creative talent and innovative businesses of the year,” BFC chairman Natalie Massenet told press upon unveiling the nominees back in October.

Tonight’s ceremony was an emotionally charged celebration as the fashion’s finest paid homage to industry veterans of the past and the bright young things of the future. Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri acknowledged the late Franza Sozzani, while Naomi Campbell and an assemblage of models presented a powerful, united message that while Azzedine Alaïa might have passed away, his legacy will live on.
