IWTV S2 Ep1 Musings - Cezare Romulo: History through Visual Context in Ploiești, Romania (Pt2)
I am on the hunt for any and all information on AMC's OCs, The Vampire Daciana, and the Vampire Cezare Romulo.
Tumblr media
In Part 1, I pointed out that Daciana was likely AMC's nod paying homage to the Dacians (aka Geto-Dacians or Daci, as the Greco-Romans knew them), the ancient Romanians of c. 10th century BC - 7th century AD, in the Transylvanian/Wallachian regions of the Carpathian Mountains.
In AR's TVC, vampires tend to reflect the era they lived/died in, preferring to wear their traditional clothes & surround themselves with antiques from their time period--like grave goods for the dead. However, from what I've found, there was nothing about Daciana's clothes/home indicating that she was an ancient Dacian (X).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Granted, if she IS that old, then that definitely increases her odds of being an "Old God" that got caught in the Great Burning.... 👀)
Regardless, I wanna turn my attention to Cezare Romulo, cuz while I'm tentatively ruling out Daciana as being Dacian, I haven't dug into The Vampire Cezare yet. So here goes nothing!
Tumblr media
Nomenclature
First thing that stood out to me is his name. Cezare's obvs Caesar, but I wonder if that's his name, or his title (like how the Latin caesar became kaiser in German & tsar in Russian).
Tumblr media
In Oltenia (Wallachia) there are archaeological remains of a Roman-Dacian fort called Romula, dated to the 2nd century AD. I couldn't find much about it, so we'll just put a pin in that. Something way cooler is that according to Google Translate, Romulo means Romulus, in both Romanian & Italian. That's hella interesting, cuz Romulus was the founder of Rome (8th century BC), twin brother of Remus, whom he killed Cain vs Abel style to be the ruler. In some versions, Romulus "died" under VERY mysterious circumstances:
Tumblr media
So for AMC's OC vampire to be named after two Romans (Caesar & Romulus) who were both incredibly violent & bloodthirsty rulers says a lot. Especially considering with how Daciana described him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Castle: Bears & Wolves (Totems & Crests)
Cezare killed a whole circus troupe traveling through Transylvania (Sibiu), and only spared their bear. I wondered why this was so noteworthy--vampires will kill anyone for food (or sport), esp. if they don't follow the creed about only killing Evil Doers (as Cezare obvs. didn't--unless he knew something about that troupe we don't...! 👀 Clowns ARE evil, after all 💀). Vamps don't tend to kill animals, unless they need to defend themselves--but aren't circus bears kept in cages or something? So why would it matter?
So I reckon that Daciana's point was actually that Cezare LIKED the bear, and probably KEPT it, as his pet.
Cuz look at his castle: the joint's filled with taxidermy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think some of these animals are bears and/or wolves (Romulus & Remus were raised by wolves in the woods....). And that tracks with what is known about the main Dacian animal, the wolf (or "Draco"/dragon), (X X X).

Strechie, Mădălina. "The Dacians, the Wolf Warriors." In International Conference Knowledge-Based Organization, vol. 23, no. 2, pp. 367-373. 2017.
(ISTG when is AMC bringing AR's Wolf Gift books into the Immortals Universe--I need my werewolves already, gosh darnit!)
Cezare clearly felt a strong affinity for animals, especially bears.
Tumblr media
Which isn't surprising, considering the life-death-rebirth symbolism of the bear in Romanian traditions like the Ursului (bear dances).

The Castle: Architecture
As for Cezare's castle ruins, I have no idea what's going on.
Tumblr media
The most interesting thing was Cezare's final resting place in this catacomb-like structure, lying in a stone sarcophagus.
Tumblr media
Like, there are Roman-era burials found across Romania, but Cezare having a STONE sarcophagus is interesting, cuz apparently Transylvania's Daco-Roman inhumations are more often brick:
Tumblr media
As stone sarcophagi only became more popular around the 3rd-4th century AD
Tumblr media
Cocis, Horatiu. "Some remarks on the Roman necropolises of Potaissa." Journal of Ancient History and Archaeology 2, no. 2 (2015).
Before largely falling out of favor/use by the 5th-6th century AD, except for clergy & royalty:
Tumblr media
Maggio, Ariane. "Burial Practices in Europe." Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology (2018): 1-6.
So, does this possibly give us a date for him, approx 2nd-6th century AD? But how long was it until he died? (HOW did he even die?)
What about the rest of his castle? Like, the place is an utter ruin, and there's barely anything left of that dark AF exterior that I can use.
Tumblr media
Is this a studio set, or was it filmed on location somewhere? IDFK. There's hundreds of Romanian archaeological sites--let alone Daco-Roman ones--it kinda reminds me of davas (fortresses/strongholds), (X X), if not for the masonry being different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, I have no frikkin clue, y'all; this is all I've got, LOL. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Results? Inconclusive! Again! 😂😭
I don't know if AMC was deliberately implying that Cezare Romulo (or Daciana) had anything to do with the ancient Daco-Romans...but it's interesting to think about!

Rambling about how much the Succession series finale fucked me up.
Kendall realizing that the people who once supported him (Rava, Jess, and his kids) truly are gone, except his one true friend whom has already admitted that he can't trust him and that he'll "follow the money" told me how this whole shown will end early on. He got all of the weapons he needed for battle, just to stab himself in the foot.
Ep 9 he said he hoped part of his father was in him.
He got his wish.
He tried to get a vote of no confidence against his father in 1x06, yet it backfired, and it made sense why it did due to how poorly he handled it.
The finale was no different.
He also resembles Logan in the worst way by resorting to physically abusing Roman in private and public, and how he intimidated him during the voting. Now both of his siblings rightfully separated themselves from him.
Shiv's arc is the most tragic to me due to the fact that in S1 she wanted nothing to do with Waystar and worked with Gil against Logan, just to be ridiculed by him and called a coward for not competing.
In S2, Gil drops her and then she moves back into her father's "good" graces and fights to be CEO.
Logan promised that it's her, yet still sidelined her at any opportunity to the point where she embarrassed herself in front of the Pierce family.
It's funny how so many lines that I originally saw as petty insults like "Kendall is screwy, Shiv's not as smart as she thinks she is, Roman you're a moron" were accurate descriptions of the characters. Shiv swore she thought she would overturn her father, the man who runs a conservative media conglomerate, would appoint her as the CEO, as if these old ass yt men would take her seriously under any circumstances. She even had an odd dynamic with her own husband where she was the one with affairs and threw him under the bus at any time it was possible for her to.
In the end, she ended up exactly where she didn't want to be, the same position as her mother, a woman stuck in a hapless marriage with a child and a man whom she has a fraught relationship with. She had so much ambition, just for it to backfire horribly.
"A fucking waste of time" as Peter said.
To be fair, they did nothing but argue in front of them, cut family dinner short, or eat his prized cheese, so I get the annoyance. But you were part of why they are at odds against each other.
So boo hoo.
If any of the sibling resemble each other than being blood related, it's Shiv and Kendall. Both of them wanted to be the CEO of Waystar for their own personal reasons.
Kendall's reasons were very specific.
As he said, he was promised the role since he was seven years old. It's obvious that idea has followed him for years and years till he became an adult, like we all do, and it became bigger. It's how the show is started. He's ALWAYS wanted to succeed his own father.
He fought so hard to succeed his father since the first season and never stopped, he did have some pause during S3, but in that finale after confessing to his crime to Shiv and Roman and them comforting him In a way that hasn't been seen in the series almost ever was a huge change to their relationship as a whole, to see him lie about him speaking his truth just because he was scared that they'd rightfully use that information against him was hard to watch.
All of that fighting to overturn Logan, he became him in the process, using his intimidation against Roman to make him make a decision. I wouldn't be shocked if Shiv noticed that and decided to vote against Ken.
Speaking of Romulus, he's ironically the one sibling that escaped the waystar circle, but he was more kicked out of it.
After Gerri being the only person on his side, then dropping him after he impulsively fired her and had the nerve to act as of he didn't, after Mencken the neo nazi saw how he acted at the funeral (as a person who lost a loved one) and dropped him like a bad habit, and he burned bridges with Mattson, it's clear to say he doesn't have anyone else on his side.
He's not like Shiv or Kendall where they have intentions to be CEO, are the opposite sides of one coin, and the obvious fact that he ultimately doesn't care about almost anything.
He got out of the loop more than Kendall or Shiv did and yet he's still lonely, or at least that's what I interpret from that smile to a frown in his last scene.
After dealing with the physical harm from the protests, he ran back to his mother. (and let's be real, he's Caroline's favorite child). Shiv and Kendall would fight over who would be CEO, but he never cared that much.
For Roman to be the sibling that escapes Waystar, I truly didn't see that coming, but should have. Why would he subject himself to that kind of torture after he endured it for his entire childhood?
And this is the Roy sibling that I find the most annoying, but I will admit, he was fully aware of the bullshit his family was on 24/7.
So his ending makes sense, he smirks, but then frowns about the people waystar, employed or not, whom had his back and he screwed up the relationship with, but that whole place felt like a cage to him, so what loss is there anyways?
Connor, Connor, Connor. The eldest son, ready for what a long distance relationship with his own newlywed wife. He and Shiv and a similarity to their father when it comes to romantic relationships. His father dies and he gets married, Shiv suggests an open marriage to Tom on their wedding night. BANG!
Logan was with Sue-Ann when he was married to Caroline and with Kerry when he was married to Marcia. Oh how history repeats itself. Connor is the eldest son and only escapes half of the abuse just because he's the most neglected.
Connor and Roman have a similarity due to how uninterested they are in the battle to be the next CEO, Roman saw it as a cage and Connor saw it as a competition to see who could be loved by their broken father. (which at this point he knew was pointless)
It's sad to see Connor and Willa soon to be separated because, Out of all four siblings, Connor has Willa, one can say he bought a person, but she has had many opportunities to leave, but still stayed and had his best interest in mind, even reminding him to stay true to his original ambition. Can anyone else related to him say that?
Personally, I don't think so.
This finale felt right in the most tragic way for me because, the series had shown so many signs of how it would all end from S1-3
Kendall losing the vote of no confidence, Shiv being shanked by Tom, Roman losing his personal support, Connor being outcasted, etc.
Tom has been aware of how Shiv treated him for a while, there was no way he wouldn't get his lick back in the end, especially knowing the environment he's in. Yes as effeminate as he can be, he'll use what he can to get what he wants, just like the Roys do.
He used Greg as his own Shiv stand-in because he knew he couldn't overstep his boundaries with her while Logan was alive, when he died he did feel so much empathy for not only Shiv, but her brothers as well because he is still human and finding out your parent died in an airplane bathroom and you have a few seconds to say goodbye is a lot for a person.
Nonetheless, Tom and everyone persisted in their pursuit for power, meanwhile Connor took ownership of his father's residence, because I'm sure Marcia would love to let go of a home she shared with an unfaithful husband.
With the eldest son's rules of claiming what they want in a full mansion and then being pulled together by the old footage of their father, it's easy to still think they'll have some solidarity even after anointing Kendall as the best choice..
Choosing items with a simple sticker was a warning. Tom choosing Greg as his second is a win, but a loss. Mattson can just easily choose another U.S. CEO if he feels lole getting rid of Tom, but he is the current decision.
Tom 'the people pleaser' Wambsgans being CEO is a shock, but not as much as a shock for me as opposed to most of which saw this finale.
Logan called out his own children, them playing toy soldiers, being unserious people, and full-fledged morons.
He was unfortunately correct.
For Kendall to try so hard to be Logan 2.0, to the point where he lied to them, where Shiv said she can't stomach him, where he resorted to ignoring Connor and barely taking Ewan seriously when he was one of the only ones being honest with them,
Connor inheriting the delusion that Logan had with how he honestly believed his life will go on to be, Roman with his "I win" mentality his father has, or Kendall & Shiv having the cutthroat, "I'll demolish anyone who might oppose me" sense that their father had for years.
But the tragedy is that none of his children truly present that state of mind.
It's not surprise that the biggest people pleaser of all characters, Tom, would be the one to impress Mattson.
Tom has been a pick-me since episode one, but he showed how much he will and has worked in his own favor.
Greg was someone I thought would overthrow and fire Tom, but Tom being the one who was chosen as CEO feels so unexpected, but appropriate. He managed to reverse the dynamic of his relationship with Shiv, but maintain it with Greg, even though both relationships involve emotional manipulation, they still come back to each other, unfortunately.
Shiv and Tom have said some truly horrific things toward each other for a married couple under a few months and yet they never left each other officially, Greg has tried to throw Tom under the bus as well since he is a blood relative meanwhile Tom projected his own personal issues with Shiv onto her own cousin, whom she stole $20 from, and yet, Tom refuses to leave Greg alone.
Tom now being able to control Greg & overpower Shiv at this moment is shocking, yet hauntingly expected.
It haunts me how when shiv and Roman chose Kendall as the leader, they just casually mocked his way of speaking, when in reality, he used the same disturbing methods as their deceased father, Tom still having Gerri, but especially having Greg's back in the end. Shiv noticed how her brother was turning into Logan and his much her own husband outsmarted her in the end, Roman just ordered the same drink Gerri did just to feel some sort of accomplishment, and Kendall came to the conclusion that no one else was completely in his corner.
Shiv as CEO was never gonna happen, Roman was too silly to take seriously,  Roman had a whole speech prepared for his father's funeral and couldn't deliver it, Kendall spoke his and now in retrospect, it feels more like wishful thinking, Connor never got to say his own eulogy, and Shiv delivered one that was poignant, yet still unchanging to the environment around her.
Anyone who tells me or might tell me this series finale made no sense should keep it to themselves, because the writing was on the wall.

arthur pendragons innate charm

Yeahp. When his Interlude for his S2 upgrade came about, it actually gave a good idea what Arthur is like in Chaldea.
He's basically a loner. He never fully interacts with people except some of the servants he knew during the Proto HGWs & Bedivere but like bare minimum. (he even ghosted Mordred when Mordred, excited at being invited for cake, extended that invite when she saw Arthur passing by... he ghosted her cake invite! Rude, Arthur, rude.)
Basically throughout the Interlude you find out why he's being a loner doing a bare minimum of interaction: he thinks of himself as someone who shouldn't be in Chaldea PHH (since he is from a reality where he is male) and that because he's always thinking about needing to be battle ready to kill Beast 6, Arthur never truly just in a way relaxed in his time in Chaldea.
In a way, he thinks he is just a duty sworn knight taking an unexpected stopover in his quest. After enough convincing from the other servants (including Romulus), he was convinced that even if he is on a quest, he can learn to just enjoy his stay in Chaldea and actually interact with the other servants. He doesn't need to always just be battle ready.
Fun Fact: in the earlier tellings it can be argued that Morgan's arch enemy wasn't Arthur, but Guinevere (In fact the Green Knight thing specifically targeted her AND she becomes Arthur's ally later on/lets him chill at her place one time). This is most likely why.

this could just be me reading into something that isn’t at all something to be read into, BUT i think it’s really interesting how logan didn’t refer to roman as romulus a single time in the last four episodes of s2. romulus and remus were twins in ancient roman mythology, and romulus ultimately committed fratricide — now, this could just be logan roy being obnoxiously dramatic with his nicknames, but i’ve always sort of seen it as a reference to the killer instinct that logan believes roman has (and that he believes kendall lacks). logan and roman’s relationship- though always extremely tumultuous- takes a steep nosedive in the latter half of season two. logan has seemingly dismissed the notion of roman succeeding him, though that doesn’t stop the roy patriarch from using his son in various ways to keep waystar royco from imploding. HOWEVER! the first two episodes of season three see logan reviving the romulus nickname- which, again, could mean nothing- but maybe he’s beginning to reconsider roman’s position in the company? maybe roman securing the money needed to take waystar private has impressed logan enough to have him thinking about the fact that roman might have what it takes to be the successor.

we know that bobby only watched ds9 and dean watched the tos movies for sure which implies he's seen tos as well (plus he calls jack spock). so what do you think everyone's favorite trek is? sam is without a doubt a tng fan first and foremost. i think out of all tos movies cas prefers the wrath of khan because he Feels Things when kirk and spock do the ta'al through the glass. charlie has definitely seen some trek (we've seen her llap), do you think she's into tos first and foremost? anyway let's talk about star trek nights in the bunker.
OKAY SO I HAVE. MANY MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG.
like. like of COURSE bobby only likes ds9 of course he does i could have told you this without the show becuase like. bobby is That Bitch. i think rufus will have watched TOS at least because leonard nimoy worked hard on linking jewish faith and practices into the vulcan lore and i think that would mean something to him. bobby will catch rufus smiling at him sometimes while they’re watching ds9 and ask him what all gruffly and rufus will smirk at him and say something about sisko with jake and bobby with dean and bobby will just cough and take a swig of whiskey and rufus will raise his eyebrows but let it slide. rufus definitely makes a comment once about dean&cas being like jake&nog that totally flies over dean’s head but bobby is all knowing eyebrow raise about.
i think cas and jack would really like discovery. while it has some issues with inconsistency, pacing, being a little dark, it also does better than the other TV treks at utilising the nature of film as a medium to instill a sense of wonder, at space and the world, and that’s something they’d really appreciate. i have my own issues with disco, but an obol for charon is as close to the central core of trek that disco ever gets. cas and jack also like that one in particular because they like listening to all the different languages being spoken. they all love michael (everyone loves michael). cas’ faves are stamets and reno because they’re mean and gay, jack’s fave is tilly because she’s excitable and bright and he latches onto that. dean likes reno because she’s got spunk. sam’s fave is airiam and he will never forgive them for killing her off. sam, cas and dean all feel an uncomfortable kinship with both ash and culber - they’ve both been the one with monster teeming under the surface, controleld by something not themself, but they’ve also all spent that time in hell/purgatory, separated from everyone they love.
thinking about episodes that would really get to them all, darmok is. THE ONE. i have a whole unfinished essay about darmok as the platonic ideal of star trek; the perfect distillation of everything trek is SUPPOSED to be about. it doens’t always get there but by god it tries! that speech michael gives in the disco s2 finale - “There's a whole galaxy of people out there who will reach for you. You have to let them. Find that person who seems farthest from you and reach for them.” - that’s what darmok is about!!! it’s all about a situation where real communication seems impossible, where everything we know about talking and learning has broken down. and picard says, okay, i will find another way. i can’t relate to you, you can’t relate to me, but by god i’m going to try. we all meet people we have trouble communicating with in our lives, and often, those people will not care about changing their own ways to accommodate us. for people with autism, adhd, psychosis, the list goes on, this is a very common occurrence. it’s exhausting and frustrating and alienating. darmok is all about crossing that barrier. about reaching for someone through a world of difficulty and learning how to talk. learning how to share something with someone who seems out of our reach. it’s beautiful, it’s heartwrenching, it means more to me than i can easily put into words!
anyway i think the bunker fam would experience a lot of emotions watching it together. there’s defintiely a lot of hugging eachother, sam cries a lot and won’t look at anyone until after the episode ends. jack just asks a lot of questions and talks about his progress learning sign language with cas. dean snakes his hand into cas’ halfway through and doesn’t let go. doesn’t show the emotion on his face, but he clutches harder at the emotional beats. cas runs his fingers through jack’s hair and thinks a lot, and decides not to say anything unless dean talks first. its just a Lot for everyone.
dean def makes them marathon all the TOS and TNG movies. it’s an experience everyone needs at least once. i think you’re right about cas and TWOK with the ta’al through the glass, but also ‘this simple feeling’ and the hand hold would make him feel crazy. bones being the one that spock entrusts with his katra DEF makes dean feel some type of way because as much as destiel is kirkspock-coded, dean IS bones, and seeing spock trust bones so completely despite how at odds they were when they first knew eachother would dig deep into dean’s psyche and make him more than a little bit nutso. the movies are way too long for jack so he mostly sits and plays animal crossing while they watch and looks at the screen when everyone else gasps or when something exciting is happening that holds his attention for a while. sam’s fave is nemesis precisely because it’s terrible and he loves how camp it is.
dean has definitely seen all of trek. i refuse to believe someone who watches as much tv and films as dean wouldn’t sit and watch the whole shebang. i think he’s probably seen TOS and the TOS movies more than the others because its easier than sitting through 7 seasons, but i think rather than that being his favourite he’d just have really strong opinions about the best episodes of each one? like if you asked him what his favourite is he’d say you can’t answer that because they’re all so different from eachother
VOY - bride of chaotica, non seqitur, macrocosm for the favourite episodes. seven, janeway and tuvok would be his favourite characters. he think toms a bit of a knob but also feels a kinship with him for the similar brand of bab dad-ism but he wouldn’t be able to put that into words. he’s also a fierce defender of threshold being a good episode (he’s right for that)
DS9 - our man bashir it’s our man bashir. he doesn’t dislike ds9 but its very plot heavy and he didn’t care for it when he was younger. rewatching it after living through multiple supernatural wars he’d probably appreciate it more. i know for a fact he cries every time there’s an episode about sisko being a good dad. jadzia and garak are his faves
TNG - he LOVES q. he also absolutely will not be caught dead referencing how much loves q after cas comes into his life because sam will do the little brotherly knowing eyebrow raise at him and he will die of embarrassment. he regularly references ‘there are four lights’ because he’s a fucking nerd. he has made cas watch elementary my dear data and fistful of datas a half dozen times each at LEAST. cas KNEW how dean was going to be about the cowboy hat he’s defintiely got into full cowboy getup at home just for watching movies and in cas’ head star trek is fully to blame.
TOS - oh there are so many good TOS eps to choose from. obv he loves most of the series becuase TOS has MANY banger eps, his favourites are probably like. mirror mirror, amok time (baby dean defintiely had some kind of crisis watching it for the first time; i know the rituals are intricate). i know deep in my bones that dean watched the conscience of the king (introduction of the tarsus iv massacre) once and then spent his entire teenage years writing fic about that in his head, whether he posted it or not. dean related too much to those experiences of shared hunger. city on the edge of forever is one of everyone’s faves for a reason (and i’m STILL mad we never got a closer take on that episode in spn it could have been so fun).
ENT - he definitely thinks enterprise is stupid and he’s not wrong but he has also definitely watched it and been very repressed about the whole thing. mans was like oh i feel a kinship with malcolm reed the obviously repressed queer man. i will never examine this feeling ever again thank you <3 he also makes fun of archer for being obsessed with, of all sports, water polo. shran is his favourite character because he’s a little shit and makes him laugh, and t’pol, because t’pol is a badass and he’d appreciate that. i can’t remember the title of a single episode off the top of my head though lol.
i can see what you’re saying about sam being a TNG stan. i’m conflicted though, I feel like TNG’s generally the favourite of 1) obnoxious nerds who think knowing trivia facts makes them smart, 2) men desperately trying to seem masculine and 3) people who’ve watched it three times and have extremely complex thoughts on the personhood and rights of robots. i could see sam fitting into the third group, but people who are in it for the robot feelings are a coin flip between voyager and tng being the fave, and i just have a feeling that voyager would be his favourite. i know kid sam is getting gender envy watching voyager in shitty motels while dad and dean are out, trying to find the words for it. his first semester at stanford he talks a friend into giving him the janeway haircut and rides that high for months. sam’s favourite characters are seven and EMH.
sam and dean have definitely had dozens of long drawn out debates about philosophical topics in star trek. do the holograms deserve rights and if so which ones. are the romulans and vulcans still meaningfully the same people. was spock right for trying to foment reunification by going undercover on romulus. can the borg be redeemed. etc etc.
i haven’t seen any of picard at all so i can’t comment. i also think sam and dean probably read a lot of the trek books? they’re pretty common to find in secondhand bookstores and cheap, would have been even cheaper back in the day. sam probably doesn’t care for them much, dean has a few solid faves though. i’ve only read the disco books so i can’t comment anything specifically (besides the fact that i think dean read dead endless and cried like a baby), but some of the TOS and DS9 books are gay as hell and i know dean was eyes emoji-ing that shit.

succession posting (s2, ep 6)
-kendall is the best out of all of them. i can say this as a cancer and an oldest child, that capricorn man is misunderstood. i like how he loves his children, including his autistic child, and i like how he is respectful to people lower than his station. anyone who is like “but he has a drug problem hes irresponsible!” shut the fuck your mouth. we do not accuse addicts in this house. however, i will admit that kendall is not a strong businessman without daddys money, which makes him pushy and shallow.
-i really dislike siobhan (shiv). i think shes a spoiled brat who transparently uses people. i dont even think she wants to run the company, i think she just wants to wear a little crown that says “ you win!!!!” on it bc she cant handle losing in any capacity. shes a daddy’s girl with no friends and nothing to show for her work, and tries to make up for it after she gets fired from her political job and decides to wander into her dads office. that said, i think she would be the most capable of running the company smoothly but perhaps without much of a growth strategy.
-i really REALLY dislike romulus (roman). hes a privileged, spiteful, classist worm that likes to pull the “bother a huge guy until he pulls his fist back to hit you, then goes ‘heyyy im just a little guy!” sort of deal. i think he would be the absolute worst at running the company, and i think his issues w bullying/intimacy demonstrate how stunted he really is. i feel for him as a victim of abuse but i am not considering that a pass for being an asshole
-connor is boring and he confuses me. should not be in charge of anybody.
-logan himself is an awful man. i get the whole dynamic of built the house u live in vs had a house since birth disparity btwn him and his kids, but he fucking hit an autistic child in the face. he is verbally abusive. he is emotionally abusive. he has no respect for anyone. its really his fault he doesnt have a successor, because he should have been a better dad and not made such fucked up kids.
-marcia is interesting and i want to know much more about her. she pains me a little bit because i sense that theres something going on with her and logan along the lines of “he is mean to the whole world except me”, which is just a prelude to the abuse u will suffer once he decides youre no longer of use to him. so for that reason, her smugness gets on my nerves, bc im worried for her storyline when it goes south. personality wise tho, shes alright. shes very believably european, and i like how she sometimes puts the kids in their place. she IS a stepmom tho, so she is on thin fucking ice.
-tom. wambsgans is the dude from your high school who was in theater or on yearbook or something that never had any actual power but acted like he was important, bc if he was really in charge of something hed ruin it, which everyone knew. hes unlikeable but because he keeps getting the patsy, its hard to blame him for the way he acts. i dont think he could run the company without some serious help. he has no real values nor motivations except Self Preserve, which i find lame.
-cousin greg is an odd little comic relief sasquatch fella and im just grateful they didnt cast Jonah from Veep to play him. im still early in this show but i hope he ends up with some actual power except the blackmail thats about to blow up in his face.
-stewy is actually my favorite cos hes a complete scumbag, but hes upfront about it AND hes funny. AND hes not playing power games. he literally is just all about the money so theres no subterfuge w him. i hope he gets the company and turns it into like, idk the snapchat news page.
anyway thanks for reading feel free to fight me on this, i would love to discuss! also im only on season 2 ep 6 so no spoilers pls thanks u

Anime Update 60
Dragon Ball - While Tambourine is still on his serial killing spree of martial artists around the world, King Piccolo is turning his attention towards seeking out the Dragon Balls and the Pilaf gang is starting to realize more and more just how out of their depth they really are in serving this guy. The most notable part of the episode is how Piccolo creates his new spawn, Cymbal. I knew how that would look before he did it but it was still disgusting and shudder inducing to watch.
Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions - The incident of Yuta saving Rikka from falling off the school rooftop pushed them a little bit closer together and a little bit further in how they process their feelings, with Rikka being the first to confess (I guess Dekomori’s a better help with these things than Sunohara is). But then Toka goes and puts Yuta in a spot where he has to get Rikka to finally face reality and give up on her Chunibyo since Toka’s made plans to go off to Italy and leave Rikka to take care of herself. What ended up frustrating me was that for some reason we weren’t actually shown the immediate aftermath of Yuta asking Rikka to take off her eye patch. It just cuts to the end of the cultural festival where Rikka sings her late father’s favorite song before removing her eye patch to reveal her eye looking normal (after the credits!), though I will say the idea that they had to substitute a Yuta VS Rikka performance with a Nibutani VS Dekomori performance (with very real hitting on Deko’s part) was amusing and felt right. I’m also finding that while I like Yuta as a character, I really don’t care much for his voice acting in the dub. He has this tendency to speak too softly and mutter his lines in serious scenes that just really bugs me and makes him sound way too disconnected from someone who ever had Chunibyo himself. In a mostly solid dub cast, Leraldo Anzaldua is easily the weak link.
My-Otome - We seem to be finally inching away from the “stuff happened” section of the series and getting into the real plot action that the show’s been building towards since the start. Arika and her two gal pals (y’know, her two gal pals who aren’t Nina and Mashiro?) are now actively striving to all become Meister Otomes while Mashiro is finally starting to get shit done from her throne. With Nagi casting aside Azwad and accelerating his work with the Schwartz, a stronger Otome response from Windbloom and Garderobe is required to quell the unrest and warring in Romulus and Remus. I did get a kick out of seeing that after sparks flew between Nao and Shiho earlier on in the show, Shiho has now gotten the last laugh as she’s been granted a crucial diplomatic role while Nao is saddled with a job that she doesn’t like because it messes up all of her life’s plans; sucks to be you, Nao! Arika wants her mystery benefactor (who we all know to be Sergay) to see her when she graduates to a higher Otome level and meet her in person. But evil is rearing it’s ugly head first in the form of Tomoe, who Arika beat in a dance battle at the start and for some reason wants to end all of Arika’s prospects, so she tries to fucking drop a dangerous acidic substance on top of Arika and would’ve succeeded had Erstin not got in the way! What is this psychotic bitch’s deal? And then by the very end, Nagi’s coup is underway!
Assassination Classroom S2 - Watched the two-part “Reaper Time” story arc that takes place some time after Bitch-Sensei’s birthday, which was on October 10. We found out more about Bitch-Sensei here; try as she might, she’s not someone who can totally put aside emotion for the sake of her line of work, whether that be in academics or assassination, which leads to some heartbreak thanks to Karasuma’s emotionally disconnected, strictly professional approach. Wanting to revert back to the heartless spy and assassin she used to be, Bitch-Sensei plays right into the hands of the Reaper, and from there we get to get into some of her backstory, how she lost her family in a war-ravaged nation, lived on her own in poverty, and was offered up to Lovro to train her in being a killer. While she and Karasuma seem both willing to turn on E Class and side with Reaper in the hopes of finally killing Korosensei, neither of them prove willing to let this go on to the point of risking the kids’ lives. Karasuma turns first, but Bitch-Sensei takes a while because Reaper has her convinced that she’s the same as him, even when she very clearly is not. I loved how it’s set up like we’re going to get the cliched “she’s gonna aim her gun at him but won’t be able to go through with it ‘cause she loves him too much” scene only for Reaper to very abruptly push a detonator and bring the place down on Karasuma and Bitch-Sensei before that point is even reached! And while Bitch-Sensei might have seemed a bit too easily forgiven for her betrayal, the kids did make a good point that backstabbing and working around lethal force fired by someone who was a comrade just a while ago is kind of part of an assassin’s life, so they’d be no good at what they’re being taught and trained to be if they couldn’t handle it well. I’m just glad she and Karasuma are back together.
My biggest quibble here, surprisingly, would be the Reaper himself. On one hand he’s a very creepy character, so seemingly ordinary and friendly that he can slip right in and catch his prey unawares, and his methods for trapping and killing were as sadistically slow and methodical as they were effective. He reminds me of Nagito Komaeda in Danganronpa with how, unlike Takaoka, his cheery demeanor and affable personality is legit a product of his insane mind, and Ian Sinclair’s voice acting for him was perfect. But on the other hand, he’s the weakest of the series’ four major antagonists for a number of reasons, a big one being that he just doesn’t live up to his own in-universe hype. He didn’t really kill Lovro (as we’ll find out later), he didn’t get all that close to killing any of the good guys (Itona honestly felt like more of a threat to Korosensei than him), and he ends up going down ridiculously easy in a fight with Karasuma. After losing his false face and revealing his true form to look like freaking Red Skull! It’s easy to loathe him, but the fear of him diminishes and it becomes increasingly difficult to take him seriously. He might improve a bit upon his inevitable return, but right now he’s a major letdown. Then again, he’s really just a copycat of the guy who killed his father and inspired him to kill in the first place, a man of mystery who Korosensei regards as a low-life fool, and for good reason...
Vinland Saga - This episode was more than a bit strange, as I didn’t even know where I stood on what it was doing. For a lot of time the focus is on the family of this girl named Anne and how...Christian they are. And when I say that I mean that they’re written almost like a Ned Flanders-esque parody of Christianity, with lines like “Jesus told us to pray, and Jesus is always right” and fearmongering about how sinners are damned to Hell to the point where poor Anne fears for her own soul due to having stolen a bracelet from the market some time back. But then Askeladd and his merry band of Vikings come along and ransack the snowy village for supplies right at a time where Anne is away, and this is when Askeladd finally crosses the line into straight up unredeemable monster territory. He assures all the frightened villagers, who are pleading for him to leave half the food with them so that they may survive the winter, that he won’t let them suffer from starvation...because he’ll have his men massacre each and every one of them. And that’s exactly what happens! It was a horrifying moment, but possibly even more horrifying is Anne’s response to having witnessed it - she prays to God, showing that she still believes in Him, but expresses her feelings of eustasy over knowing that He can bring such punishment upon the virtuous from men who don’t fear His condemnation, and spare a sinner like her. And then she passes out in the snow. Damn. I guess this marks the start of her path towards a life of sin, vice, villainy and....huh? Wait, she’s not going to factor into any future story? What the Hell!?
Magic Knight Rayearth - Just as the girls were finally reaching the point where they could revive the Rune God, Ascot corners them in person with the biggest, baddest monster he’s summoned yet, which was good ‘cause I was growing weary of waiting for this to occur. While I made fun of Ascot for this before, he really is a great character for playing with the typical high fantasy RPG disposable monsters trope, giving us someone who actually cherishes those creatures as friends and is emotionally devastated when the heroes slay them without a second thought. But of course the flaws in Ascot’s view of friendship are made apparent too as he’s not valued his friends’ lives enough to not send them charging into danger and the monsters don’t respect him as an individual to the point where they’d ever make any sacrifices for him. This is cleverly contrasted with the test that the Rune God gives Umi, and how she chooses to help her friends rather than obey the Rune God’s insistence. Now that Ascot’s retreated and the Rune God, revealed to be a giant robot, has been brought back out into Cephiro, Zagato notes that “they revived one of the Rune Gods.” So wait, there’s more???
A Place Further Than The Universe -  Who knew that becoming eligible for the Antarctic expedition was as simple as getting in the good graces of a high school girl who was already set to be on it? That’s seriously what happens here - Shirase and her friends luck out when a teen celebrity named Yuzuki tries to get Shirase to take her place, and then they end up having to convince Yuzuki to go on the trip with her mother in exchange for being granted permission for themselves as reward. Granted it’s not TOO simple since Yuzuki really wants to stay in her hometown so that she may attend school and make friends, even though her celebrity status has only ever barred her from having a single true friend in her whole life. The part where Kimari, Shirase, and Miyake all show up at Yuzuki’s hotel room door to get her up and go with her to Tokyo, making her feel what it’s like to truly have friends and reduce her to tears, was incredibly moving, as was the “was it just a dream?” moment before where Kimari and co. reached out to her from outside the window. (This anime’s style, characters, group interactions and sentimental heart have been giving me a lot of Love Live! vibes and this was just pure Chika and Riko shit here.) I’m very interested in seeing where this goes now. Like, who was that woman with the picture of Shirase and her mother who showed up after the credits? The plot thickens!
AND
When They Cry: Higurashi - Re-watched the remaining arcs in the first season. To give my brief opinions and assessments on them:
Cotton Drifting arc - While the first arc was a great stage-setter for the rest of the series, this is the arc that really solidified it’s staying power. The horror factor of Oyashiro’s curse and all the going-ons around it is still present but rather than a ghost story, it takes on a more murder mystery approach, and unlike the blurry stream of paranoia that was the previous arc, in this one there turns out to be a true villain behind the events, one of the best in the series. It also gives a lot more depth to Mion, Rena and Rika (with Rena being one hell of a badass competent super sleuth), has Ooishi come off as just a little bit more reliable than he was before, and ends on one Hell of a jump scare. My two issues are that it has two different climaxes that both rely on Keiichi making the absolute dumbest choices that gets him nearly killed by the same person twice and drags the arc out more than it needed to be, and that it’s the only Question Arc that doesn’t stand on it’s own well - once you’ve seen it’s corresponding Answer Arc (Eye Opening), it’s impossible to not think of it when you go back to this one. Like the Sonozaki twins, they’re inseparable.
Curse Killing arc - This one was and still is my least favorite arc in the series. While I appreciate what it does for Satoko and Keiichi as characters and how well yet subtly it sets up the true mastermind of the curse, the subject matter of child abuse and how fucking terribly that issue is handled in Japan is so uncomfortable, the sheer amount of “adults are awful” instances (Teppei, Dr. Irie, Mrs. Maebara, Takano, and especially Ooishi are just the worst here) gets tiresome, the fallout of killing Teppei that Keiichi finds himself dealing with is screwy and unpleasant even for this series, and I think showing us a little girl’s mangled, disembowled corpse being feasted on by crows was taking just a step too far. It’s not a bad arc, just my least liked.
Time Wasting arc - Another one I’m not super fond of, but it’s only two episodes long and is at least something very different; set years before Keiichi moved to Hinamizawa, starring a new character, showing how things were like when the dam conflict was still looming large and Oyashiro’s Curse wasn’t an annual thing yet, revealing stuff about Rika that changes our perspective of the character, and serving as the main springboard for the entire rest of the series’ plot. The final scene where Akasaka remembers how Rika had predicted the course of the next couple of years’ deaths on Cotton Drifting night, ending with her own death and the quarantine of the entire village, was the one that really made it clear to me how invested I’d become in this story. I needed answers, the answers still yet to come.
Eye Opening arc - Possibly my favorite arc in the series and while not the scariest, it’s absolutely the darkest and most sinister. Shion Sonozaki comes out as a protagonist you never knew you wanted to follow, and as her story goes on we watch the state of her mind and her moral compass deteriorate, her spiral into madness, hateful feelings and vengeful intent warping her into the most diabolical and depraved villain to threaten Hinamizawa. It gives us more insight into Satoshi Houjo than the previous arcs to heavily factor him in as a plot device, raises so many possibilities for what might be the real truth behind the curse via Shion investigating into the matter only to definitively dash them all in the end, presents some of the most iconic, most gruesome, and most uncomfortable moments in the series (Shion getting three fingernails removed, Rika headbutting a knife ‘til she drops dead, Satoko getting crucified and stabbed to death), and it really tests the limits of how much you can stay behind your lead character and root for her in her fight against perceived injustice as her actions and behavior grow less and less excusable. It’s 6 episodes (the longest running arc in the first season) and it’s last episode is still really difficult to get through, it’s so horrific. My one quibble is that the anime really botched the ending. It feels like they ran out of time in the episode to actually properly conclude the arc so they just drop Shion to a super anticlimactic death. WEAK.
Atonement arc - Also possibly my favorite arc in the series! This more than any other chapter is a major turning point in the narrative, as it finally unveils some clear-cut truth about the long-standing mysteries of Hinamizawa (Oyashiro was a human medical healer rather than a wrathful deity, the “demon’s blood” that rises up in people is actually a parasitic virus from the Onigafuji swamp, and there’s some unknown group working within Irie’s clinic that is actually behind the killings and disappearances of the so-called curse during Cotton Drifting and who want the truth to stay covered.) It also tells a great character-driven story with Rena that ends up tying back to the first arc and blowing everyone’s minds when Keiichi actually gains memories of that arc’s events that turns everything we’d seen and thought we knew in it on it’s head. The climax is my favorite climax in the whole series, with Rena going completely batshit and holding her whole school hostage with even a fucking bomb threat, everyone working together to thwart a common threat, and an awesome Keiichi VS Rena clash on the rooftop that ends up bringing the arc to, for the very first time, a good end (and for a series called “When They Cry”, it hadn’t made me cry until the last two episodes, first with Keiichi’s Heel Realization and then with Rena’s.) It feels so much like setting a new standard and a new stage for the following season, making it an ideal first season finale.

5 shows meme
thanks @thegeminisage for starting this so that I can uhhhh procrastinate and thanks @tomasortega for reminding me
rules: pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, don’t cheat. tag 10 (or however many) people.
succession
g*t
rome hbo
nbc kings
literally can't think of anything except outlander.
who is your favorite character in 2 (g*t)? none of them. this show sucks. actually wait oberyn because he was played by mister pedro and he died too soon for anyone to fuck him over
who is your least favorite character in 1 (succession)? stewie... he’s so annoying and his name is stewie
what is your favorite episode of 4 (nbc kings)? PILOT PILOT PILOT PILOT that's the most ambitious network pilot ive ever seen
what is your favorite season of 5 (outlander)? none of them. I wish I could wipe this show off the face of the earth. I wish I could step thru the stones and kill Diana gabaldon. if I had to pick it would be the s1 ONLY. for the s1 theme music. which is on my Sansa Stark playlist.
who is your favorite couple in 3 (Rome hbo)? nobody @ me but ABSOLUTELY Livia and Octavian? their instant compatibility and recognition scene when they first meet stuck with me so much
who is your favorite couple in 2 (g*t)? starting to wonder why I put g*t on here actually is it too late to change my responses. theon/sansa had me going there for a min tho
what is your favorite episode of 1 (succession)? both season finales are phenom but honestly the one with the dinner party where Logan makes the 3 men he suspects of treason crawl on the floor and oink like pigs and the writer said he took inspiration from Stalin’s dinner parties where he’d get his generals drunk and extract blackmail material........ fuck. close second is the Kendall suicide wall ep
what is your favorite episode of 5 (outlander)? honestly the only part of this show I could stand was KING Tobias Menzies switching effortlessly between blackjack Randall and what’s his name her first husband. Tobias Menzies hive STAY WINNING
what is your favorite season of 2 (g*t) ? season one was genuinely such good television and the construction of the pilot in particular is bomb.... this being said there does exist the original, pre-doctored pilot which was so bad they recast almost everyone and completely rewrote it. and I will say that is something I would like to see.
how long have you watched 1 (succession)? I TRIED to watch it when it began and couldn’t stand it but once I was able to get into it I watched it all in like 2 weeks.... as you all witnessed
how did you become interested in 3 (Rome hbo)? its the only tv show about the ancient world that isn’t Spartacus
who is your favorite actor in 4 (nbc kings)? motherrfuckin Ian mcshane babey
which do you prefer, 1 (succession), 2 (g*t), or 5 (outlander)? this is literally a joke question obviously succession
which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 (succession) or 3 (Rome hbo )? they both have I think 20-23 episodes but I've rewatched Rome at LEAST four times and succession only once
if you could be anyone from 4 (nbc kings), who would you be? OBVIOUSLY farm boy David coming to the big city and being drawn into a sexy evil family
would a crossover between 3 (Rome hbo) and 4 (nbc kings) work? actually almost yes bc nbc kings is in a speculative biblical future and Rome hbo is in a speculative, narrowly pre-biblical past..... I Would Like To See It gif
pair two characters in 1 (succession) who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? LMAO ROMULUS/GERRI ALREADY EXISTS.....
overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 (Rome hbo) or 5 (outlander)? I can’t believe I'm about to say this either but s2 of Rome was such a shitshow pacing wise and outlander is much more consistently written...............like they know their demographic and take their time and I can’t fault them that........
which has the better theme music, 2 (g*t) or 4 (nbc kings)? KING ramin vs Chopin? fuck off I can’t make that choice...... actually I can. king ramin

So, Star Trek: Picard - here is my late review of this season as a whole. Spoilers for the whole season under the cut.
When this show was announced, i remember feeling pretty excited. Not for the expected reason. I mean, I was excited to get to see Picard again because he is a favorite character, but what I was most excited for was to finally see a Star Trek show going to the future again after so long.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love Enterprise and Discovery, and I don’t even mind the AOS films too much. I truly do. I think they’re very much Star Trek at heart, they’re good shows full of lovable characters and I do adore them, but for ages now I have been wanting to see something set in the Trek universe going to the future, and Star Trek: Picard finally did it.
Certainly not the way I imagined it going, but I have no problems of the direction it went.
The last tidbit of information that we had about the Trek universe in the future came from the AOS films saying that Romulus was destroyed. I never particulary enjoyed the idea of having Romulus destroyed in Primeverse and I especially dislike the notion of Vulcan destroyed in the Kelvin Timeline, but tbh? I’m glad Picard made a Big Deal of it. That Romulus being destroyed was something huge and that it had an impact not only for Romulans, but for whole quadrant, for the Federation.
I think the Federation becoming something more corrupt is quite in character for what we have seen in the previous season. The Federation always had the... potential to do so, and despite what many people say, all Trek shows, even TOS, flirted with this idea.
it makes a lot of sense and it always did, because the Federation is an institution, and like all institutions it needs to be constantly checked to see it it hasn’t become a parody of itself along the way.
After the Borg invasion, after the Dominion war, I think is quite in character for the Federation to be wary, to not be eager to offer help to someone who was more often than not an enemy. Even more in character of Picard to be incensed by the idea of not helping a people losing their entire planet.
Even more in character of Picard to, seeing this and seeing the synth ban, leave the Federation in a failed bluff to get his way, but still being stubborn enough and loyal enough  to his principles to not return to them after the bluff failed, and to say, decades later, that they were indeed wrong.
so, this is the background of the action - a future where Romulans are essentially refugees, unwanted refugees, not unlike the xBS in Hugh’s cube, where the Federation is very cinical and cold, unwilling to trust so easily, and Picard is an old man, haunted by the loss of a dear friend, and that’s where the heart of this shows lives.
Emotionally speaking, the heart of Star Trek: Picard is all about Data. All about Data and Picard, how much Picard loved Data, treasured him as a friend, never voiced it and spent twenty years mourning Data without properly dealing with it.
Picard was always quite emotionally constipated, after all.
I always thought that Data dying to save Picard would be something that would weight on Picard, but I was surprised to learn in this show how much it hurts him. I dream about you all the time, Picard tells Data in the last episode of the season; You don’t remember your death and I can’t forget it, he also tells him, and these first episodes tells us this. He really dreams about Data, small, little things, and his death is so clearly something he never got over, which is more easily seen when Dahj Asha comes to the picture.
When Picard learns about who Dahj is, it’s clearly something that deeply affects him. Very clearly that, since he could not save Data, he would do anything to save his daughter, even a daughter Data never met. He’s crushed when Dahj is killed, and once again so determined to save Soji when he learns about her existence.
I talked about this before - at the end, is all very much about Data, about how Picard never had closure over his death. We, the audience, at least got to hear Data say goodbye in Star Trek: Nemesis. Picard didn’t. All he saw was data transporting him, and then the ship Data was one blowing up. I rewatched Nemesis a short while ago and Picard seems shellshocked in that scene; he can’t hardly speak. I doubted he ever sat down and dealt, properly, with the trauma of this loss and what it meant to him and as a result, he never /quite/ got over Data’s death the way that he perhaps would otherwise.
This is the emotional heart ot this show, where the heart strings are pulled. Is not the only important thing, ofc, and I should speak a little about the new characters as well.
Chris Rios, Agnes Juratti, Raffi Musiker, Elnor, Soji Asha, Seven of Nine, Narek, Narissa.
Chris Rios might be my favorite of the new bunch. Wants to be broody and suave, but it’s actually a sweetheart with a heart on his sleeve. Claims to care about business and getting paid but I don’t think anyone believes him. Santiago Cabrera is doing a wonderful job with him and his many, many holograms.
Agnes is a character a bit all over the place for me. I like the potential of her and Alison Pill plays her in a very ~adorkable~ kind of way, but I don’t like very much what was done with her so far. I do like that she was able to win over the mindfuck done to her, but overall I don’t think she was used very well so far. I do hope they get  around to it on s2 and give her a better arc.
Raffi is someone I love dearly. She’s a great character, very smart, with a lot of determination, very sharp, and she’s such a mess. The scene where she’s with her son is very touching, because you can see the hurt on both of them - on Raffi, wanting to do better, on her son, tired of being hurt and not willing to risk getting burned again. She’s cross with Picard at first but once she’s in, she’s so fierce and loyal. An amazing friend to have, and Michelle Hurd plays her really well.
I talked quite a bit about Soji Asha already, but she’s a character I love dearly. She barely knows herself at this point, but she’s curious, and friendly, clever and so clearly full of emotions. She’s angry and she’s confused, but she has such potential to be a kind, good being, just like her father was. Isa Briones is a wonder with her.
Elnor is lovely and I absolutely love the idea behind his character, but so far he’s a bit all over the place as well, like Agnes. The show doesn’t seem to know very well what to do with him but I hope they find out yet, because I sure hope he sticks around!
Narek and Narissa are some of the show’s weakness for me. Not a failure on the actors playing them, but in the narrative itself - they are not compelling characters that you can feel for. I think the last episode gave us a bit more with Narek, but still doesn’t make me feel much for him, and indifference is never a good thing to feel for a character, because it means the plot failed them.
Is not secret for anyone in this blog that my least favorite Trek show is Voyager. I just think Voyager wasted so many, many many MANY opportunities of being an amazing show and it became just mediocre, but despite my complicated feelings for it, I do love its characters, and it’s no different with Seven of Nine. She’s an amazing character despite everything. despite the objectification and the catsuits, and sexist writers. I also do hate the C/7 end on Voyager (who doesn’t?) so it was a pleasant surprise to see Seven on Picard. It’s really so freaking good to see her out of a catsuit. I was surprised to see her in a role as a ranger, but tbh I like it quite a bit? I wish the show had show us more about how she ended up in this position and if she’s still in touch with her Voyager mates, so I’m hoping s2 will touch on that eventually.
also Seven/Raffi? Lots of potential here. I love this idea, but tbh I will need more than just tender hand holding between them. Again, hoping season two will step up on it!
Star Trek: Picard is also very much about this crew of mismatched crew slowly becoming friends, maybe even family eventually. Is about Picard becoming more vulnerable, emotionally, and dealing with his grief over his dear friend, who died protecting him. It’s about the xBs’s lack of place in the galaxy, about the rage of Romulans who lost so much, about the Federation learning to be less ruthless again, maybe.
Is very much about hope even in the bleakest of the situations, of doing the right thing against all the odds, of being willing to help a friend in need, and I, for one, can’t consider this anything but pure Star Trek, tbh.
Was it a perfect first season? Like any other Star Trek show, no, of course not, but it has more strong points than weaknesses, and it did deliver a beautiful first season.

Relating to this:
Well, family is definitely a different concept to Romulans than to us, so I guess the Narek/Narissa incest subtext is a bit less shocking? Children are raised “by professionals” and don’t even know who their birth parents are until they are 13. They would have a different concept of siblings. Are they biologically siblings? Were they just raised together? I’m sure they’re a part of the same “kinship network” (still kind of fuzzy on this concept) and so is Ramdha, who Narissa calls her “aunt.” But they do talk about their parents, briefly (Narek also mentions a brother who died, but he was saying this to Soji to try to get her to sympathize with him so that may very well be a complete lie).
Now, I like my idea (which will probably be completely destroyed in Picard s2) of Elnor being a part of the Vulcan/Romulan reunification movement/Romulans who sympathized with Vulcans and rebelled against/lived outside of regular Romulan society so he was passed from one Romulan counterculture to another, which would explain his complete lack of understanding of deception, because if he was raised in regular Romulan society until the age we see him at in the flashbacks, he’d at least have some concept of deception seeing as how prevalent it is in Romulan society. I still definitely think he knew and had a relationship with his parents before Romulus was destroyed.
