Really can't get over the CAN WE TALK? stickynotes. And I mean I think part of it really kinda clicked when I've seen some fanart about it. We really see in TBOB that Ford after beginning to hear voices slipping through the cracks and questions Bill, to learn what Bill really intended, ENTIRELY shuts down his communication with Bill. And you see Bill when he gets questioned in that moment responds with a heavily implied dialogue along the lines of "haha, yeah I tricked you, I'm here to overtake your dimension". But Bill still expects Ford to respond to him in some way, and it's very clear that Bill is shocked when Ford REFUSES to talk to him. And what's interesting is Bill doesn't just IMMEDIATELY begin with threats; he actually leaves stickynotes first, before Bill realizes he's FUCKED UP big time and gets really nasty. There's something pleading with the CAN WE TALK? sticky note. There's a point where Bill does realize he's not getting what he expected, that he's missing Ford, and that he's willing to possibly even smooth some things over, explain things better (maybe even the part that the nightmare dimension is unraveling perhaps) or persuade Ford into Bill's plans. But Ford refuses, and it's already too late for Bill because just like with Stan, Ford feels betrayed and when Ford feels betrayed he'll mercilessly cut the person out of his life. Ford deeply, deeply holds hurt and betrayal and as a result he has zero desire to speak with Bill again (and also uhhh big red flag to take over the world, so also. Yeah).

And it's interesting because it's a slower ramp up until Bill is desperate and threatens, uses violence, because that's what he's always used when it comes down to it, and an ultimatum is given. It wasn't just threats out of the gate; Bill DID try to speak to Ford (btw this is not me being like Ford should have spoken to Bill and it would be magically healthy, cause no matter how you slice it it's just a toxic mess tbh). Threats out of the gate would have been faster; there's over three weeks in the timeline, before Ford goes through the portal (althought we don't get too much context around exactly when everything occurs). That's a lot of time! But Bill didn't threaten Ford immediately. And I think part of that reason is because Bill expected Ford to speak to him, expected their relationship or at least their project to mean enough to Ford that Ford would speak to him and then continue their work, once his anger cooled off. And I think also part of it is because Bill cared about Ford, not that he'd admit it in the moment; but he'd rather Ford willingly be alongside him, then have to force him through threats to do the work on the portal. You see that, even after Ford spends 30 years trying to kill him and nearly even does, when he offers him during wierdmageddon to be a henchmaniac. Bill cares about Ford, wants Ford beside him. But then Ford continues to refuse to engage with him at all, and Bill realizes he's lost Ford, and progressively gets more desperate and angrier as he's still refused, and falls into the violence he usually uses, to get Ford to cooperate.

Anyhow it's one of those things that you wonder what would've happened if they DID speak, but that would ultimately be defying a big part of who Ford is... So in a way it's a juicy juicy tidbit to chew on, the implications beyond the writing on the sticky note.

obsessed with the push and pull of neal and peter’s relationship. the way peter desperately wants to trust. the way neal desperately wants to be trusted. the way neal pulls peter in, makes him feel like he finally is changing, is being such a good little ci, and neal half believes it too, but he can’t resist it. he’s a con man and will always be a con man, and the rose coloured glasses fall off and the trust is broken again, neal inadvertently pushes peter away, and the cycle goes on again.

but neal isn’t apathetic about it? for someone so good at acting the part, only showing people what he wants to show them, he wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to peter. you can see the hurt every time he knows he’s fucked up. peter berates him and neal goes full on puppy dog eyes. and the worst is when he actually is innocent; even just the thought of peter suspecting him and losing trust in him messes him up so badly. some screwed up mix of betrayal, distress, misery, hurt, all stirred up and bubbling to the surface.

but despite it all, neither of them can help it. they both love and care for each other so much, but it’s doomed to happen again and again. neal without deception and conning is like air without oxygen. it’s just who he is intrinsically, and he loves it! he’s like a kid in a candy store every time! but the introduction of peter into his life has thrown his entire being off balance. this warm presence holding out a hand and desperately trying to convince him to leave all that behind. it’s inviting and it’s alluring but who is neal if you take that all away? what’s left? is that a person neal wants to be? is that a person neal can be?

I think he wants himself to want that kind of life in some small way. a little part of him wants himself to want the easier way of living and peter’s approval that comes with it. but he can’t. it’s like being held back on a leash when all he wants to do is run. he tries it. a wild wolf padding through the front door and playing at domesticity. at first it’s nice- the dog bed is soft, the dried food is right there on the floor, and the daily walks are decent. his owner thinks he’s such a good boy. but eventually he gets antsy. he needs to hunt. and no one can stop a wolf from doing what it wants. not even the owner, standing there in the broken doorway clutching onto the collar that got left behind while thinking I thought he was different this time.

but it’s how it is. the push and pull. peter wants to trust and neal wants to be trusted. doomed to never happen, doomed to desperately wish it would.

Very much thinking about Pomme, who everyone seems to assume is soft and gentle and the fact that she is, but she's also the daughter of a beast who loved her so much that he taught her how to be a beast too.

Not thinking about Chayanne leading the pack and Pomme guarding their backs. How, even if we didn't see them interact all that much, Chayanne and Pomme resemble their parents to the point of trusting each other with the lives of all their siblings and their own.

Spartans from Halo are probably agender: a mini-thesis I thought way too much about

hi happy pride month I have thoughts on Spartans and gender that I have coalesced after many months of being influenced by my insane (affectionate) halo friends and I would like to share.

Spartans, specifically Spartan-IIs and Spartan-IIIs, are for the most part probably agender.

Spartans, as Halo lore presents them, were raised and trained in an environment that is insanely far removed from any real exposure to normal social roles/dynamics. There are countless social experiences and expectations they never had because it was never a priority.

These are people who grew up understanding themselves as sacrifices already made, as weapons against the insurrection and later the Covenant. The "social experiences and expectations" they had took the shape of fireteams, chains of command, and tactical exercises.

This is the 26th century and I'm assuming that being queer/trans is so unremarkable that most terminology to describe it is considered archaic, and also that gender politics are very loosey goosey, but people are still using standard masculine and feminine pronouns for each other, so I think it's safe to assume that in Halo, gender as a social construct remains alive and well. Thus, labeling yourself as any gender means something about yourself and the social role you're trying to play.

For Spartans, gender is one part of a social world full of expectations, context, and shared understandings that are completely meaningless to them. These are boxes they never learned how to and thus cannot fit into.

If gender is a social role you play, the role they fill is Spartan.

This probably doesn't look like much for most of them from the outside; "agender" isn't a gender identity they're actively assuming, it's a total lack of curiosity about any of it. It doesn't matter to them. It's not what they're for. There is other shit they have to worry about.

Most of them use whatever pronouns people have always used for them. John-117, for example, uses he/him because... that's just what everyone has used for him forever? Consciously changing that or questioning it would be really weird and uncomfortable for him. For almost any Spartan, for that matter; these are people who have completely subsumed themselves into being weapons in service of a much larger cause. Interrogating personal identity or who they feel like they "really are" outside of the only thing they think really matters about themselves is going to be SUPER uncomfortable.

Do not ask a Spartan to "man up" or "act like a lady". That would require them to understand things they have long since accepted are not for them.

This is fine; this doesn't make them broken or less human. They like what they are, there's job satisfaction in it.

They're just being the only thing they know how to be, the same as anybody else.
