Today In History Ossie Davis was born in Cogdell, GA, on this date December 18, 1917. The highly successful writer, director, actor, and producer established a phenomenal career, remaining throughout a strong voice for artists' rights, human dignity, and social justice. Mr. Davis made his Broadway debut in 1946 in Jeb, where he met his wife and fellow actress, Ruby Dee. He went on to perform in many Broadway productions, including Anna Lucasta, The Wisteria Trees, Green Pastures, Jamaica, Ballad for Bimshire, A Raisin in the Sun, The Zulu and the Zayda, and the stage version of I'm Not Rappaport. In 1961, he wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed Purlie Victorious. Ossie Davis was a leading activist in the civil rights era of the 1960s. He joined Martin Luther King, Jr., in the crusade for jobs and freedom and to help raise money for the Freedom Riders. He eulogized both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X at their funerals and remained an activist throughout his life. He received innumerable honors including the Hall of Fame Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement in 1989; the U.S. National Medal for the Arts in 1995; the New York Urban League Frederick Douglas Award; NAACP Image Award; and the Screen Actor's Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Ossie Davis enjoyed a long and luminous career in entertainment along with his wife and fellow performer, stage and screen collaborator, and political activist, Ruby Dee. Cop and a Half (1993)
Tumblr media
With Cop and a Half being green-lit, it’s clear someone in Hollywood had plainly run out of ideas. That said, sometimes this film in which “one’s a cop, the other’s a kid!” is so stupid it becomes somewhat entertaining. Though not as awful as you might expect it to be, you'd be shocked to hear anyone call it "good".
Devon Butler (Norman D. Golden II) dreams of becoming a police officer. When he witnesses a mob murder, he refuses to give the cops any information unless they make him an honorary member of the force. Partnered up with Nick McKenna (Burt Reynolds) the two don't get along but might succeed in bringing the killers to justice if they work together.
You might say this concept was doomed from the start, but I don’t think so. It's got a few things going for it, notably the stars. Norman D. Golden II is a charismatic little kid. He’s got the right amount of sass to keep up with his co-stars. The tiny little lawmaker is entertaining to watch and not all that bad in the role. It makes you wish they had given him a better movie. The problem is they don’t take this concept of a child police officer all the way. I wanted this kid to turn into a pint-sized one-man army against crime. Have him casually walk into a room and find key pieces of evidence because he’s closer to the floor, or use his little boy charms to get statements out of witnesses. As the rest of the precinct looks bewildered, he pours himself a glass of chocolate milk and has a candy cigar while he laughs. It might be stupid, maybe even tasteless, but it would stand out. Cop and a Half doesn’t even try to do anything unexpected.
There’s nothing about Cop and a Half that’s surprising or memorable. The villains are a bunch of bumblers who may have committed murder but are less intimidating than the Wet Bandits. You can tell writer Arne Olsen provided director Henry Winkler with only the minimum amount of words required for a screenplay, as the film runs completely out of ideas at the hour-mark, turning into a typical chase that only gets broken up with some shootout before the credits roll. Aside from a couple of lame playground-related gags, there’s nothing about this film that you haven’t seen in any other bad buddy cop-comedy.
Cop and a Half must’ve puzzled audiences upon release. Who asked for this movie? Who thought it was going to be good? Why would anyone watch it? Today, it’s best left forgotten. I often hear that today's movies are so much worse than they used to be, that there are so many more now than way back then. Cop and a Half proves there have always been bad films, that it only feels like there are more of them now because you don't remember the losers from thirty years ago. (On VHS, June 17, 2016)

Just saw #HellToPay on @amazonprimevideo and had the pleasure of re-meering @danielledeadwyler. I remember her from @the_haves_and_the_have_nots giving her character @halleberry-ish tones playing a streetgirl. We didn't know what we had with Halle way when we saw her in Jungle Fever but we found out. Danielle's role as a desperate mom trying to save her only son from death is an intense thrill ride played to the highest and shouldve been appreciated at the most decorated levels. We should see more of her. #RubyDee, #DorothyDandridge and every woman who opened a door for Danielle must be very proud. I KNOW I AM. https://www.instagram.com/p/CTderRbtzLn/?utm_medium=tumblr
