My favourite scenes from all webcomics I’ve riffed

Usually I like tearing into webcomics, but I like it more when the webcomics display a shred of something to enjoy in them, that and it’s nice to see light in the darkness sometimes. I will now go through my favourite scene from every webcomic I’ve riffed and why I like them. However I will not be talking about Chugworth Academy or Console Girl because CA doesn’t have any scenes I like even the tiniest bit and Console Girl is still too early to say anything about, but with that out of the way let’s begin.

Alien Dice: Lexx’s Backstory

Alien Dice is a very odd case, while it is objectively the most competent webcomic I’ve riffed, it is hard for me to pick a scene I really like. Ultimately I decided to go with a scene from early on which helped to shape the most likable protagonists I’ve come across in this blog. Lexx’s dramatic backstory is told in black and white panels and goes through the most important details, his childhood, him being taken in by ADC as a dice trainer and him being put through the painful prodecures that come with it. There are no chibi faces or other cheesy effects, and the black and white art and the comic’s early rather inconsistent look make it look like a shallow but outlined memory, and it’s implied Lexx revisits this memory a lot in his dreams. By far the best part is the end, Lexx asks “Why would I want to kill myself?” and it cuts to him in the present day being bloodied up, likely a result of another failed suicide attempt. Goddamn, if only this comic would properly try to reach for this level of emotion more often.

Still, it is very important scene, it is the first sign of the neverending tragedy that is Lexx’s life, and continues to help us root for him for the rest of the comic, if we don’t count the occasional moments of psychosis.

Carnivores: The climax of The Run

Like I said in my review, The Run was my favourite arc of Carnivores by far, due to the fact it’s packed with absolute insanity from beginning to end. Then the whole story ends with Austin and The Doctor finding out the whole Run TV show was planned by the evil mustache man who turns out to work for a Dalek who then summons a Big Tall Lizard to eat poor Doctor’s TARDIS. Try topping that Ncuti Gatwa.

Dominic Deegan: The Betrayal of Celesto

Dominic Deegan has had a lot of awful moments, but only few points of light. By far the biggest one is Celesto Morgan, Dominic’s seer rival and one of the only truly grey antagonists in the comic. He was basically the Matt of Dominic Deegan, and his best scene was at the climax of “Storm of Souls” where he fucking dropped Deegan in the ancient machinery, after at first tricking Deegan to think he was his friend. Even if Deegan survived and went on to do much awful things, this moment of badassery from Celesto was satisfying to see especially after seeing Deegan basically ruin Celesto’s life and then humiliate and defeat him many times. Let us hope that Celesto still has many great moments coming up in this comic, but it’s hard to top this one.

Gene Catlow: Matt Mangles The Hosts

This is the most recent one, and the reason I made this post in the first place. Matt, the allegedly evil ruler of Felin Family, takes on the devious feline-eating invisible beasts known as Hosts, after attempting to trick him into letting them eat them all, he decides to give them what they fucking deserve and uses his Host-killing device to cut them into tiny pieces. They end up escaping before Matt can decorate the walls of the Felin Meeting Building with their entrails. This scene also gives birth to the new Family Power, who will take Felin Family to new levels of greatness. It is a beautiful package from beginning to end, topped with Matt’s genuine smile. He was the real Superhero, take that Gene and Catwhis.

Kit N Kay Boodle: The True Extent of Power

And here we have the opposite of what happens when you decide to mess around with a creature with no physical body. While sneaking boinkberries to an oppressive country that forbids sex, Kit n Kay come face to face with vitriolic character known as Karastropov, who can jump from body to body. Karastropov actually ends up possessing an ally of Kit and Kay’s, a nameless train guy. Soon however Karastropov learns the train guy knows Kit and Kay, and the end result is the thing seen above. The creep would later possess other characters but he wouldn’t quite reach the levels of disturbing seen here. That would be left to the rest of the comic!

Las Lindas: Death of Digit

The world of Las Lindas is usually very non-conflicted and quiet. Most of the story’s issues seem to stem from relationships as opposed to human things. However, at some point, Digit, the irritating little fuckwad who comes to Mora’s house to be wacky, is taken out after Sarah is tricked by a couple of imps to disable her gem. This leads to Mora crying as for once we see Digit get what she deserves for being a waste of space and making the comic much worse. This was a close tie between Tiare calling out Miles on his bullshit and Alejandra calling out Mora on HER bullshit, but ultimately Digit won because no feeling of joy will ever come close to schadenfreude.

Roommates: Mondo’s Apology

Yes, even Roommates had some degree of decency in it. Mondo, the Leomon who works as a sidekick for the homophobic bully Olly (who is secretly gay because this world runs on Reddit logic), comes to the person he bullied, and apologizes for his behaviour and promises to make up for it. It is one of the few moments of redemption that feel justified. Sadly, it is sort of ruined by the reveal that homophobic bullies are actually gay, which is like...yeah.

Spinnerette: Heather and Sarah Nicole Make Amends

Most of the examples of this list have been likable characters doing something great or unlikable characters getting what they deserve, this one however is special because it has unlikable character displaying LIKABLE traits for once. And it’s very well pulled off! After the fight between Spinnerette and Sarah Nicole ended offscreen, Heather arrives to Sarah Nicole’s doorstep to hand her a housewarming gift, as well as be overall a very pleasant person to her, which at first made me think if this was all happening in Sarah Nicole’s head, but no.

Heather is usually a destructive dumbass who doesn’t care about anybody but herself, but here she was actually doing nice things. Hell, somehow Heather and Sarah Nicole had better chemistry than Heather and Mecha Maid, you know, the MAIN RELATIONSHIP OF THIS COMIC? It was a really pleasant surprise after a really mediocre arc.

Warmage: Warmage Vs. Godsmite

I know there is a joke to be made about the best scene in a webcomic being the very last scene, but here it is. Warmage’s rematch against the first villain in the comic, Miguel Sanchez, had decent buildup. With Miguel somehow being resurrected back from the dead, he eventually started impersonating Warmage after gaining Llew’s old armor, killing Llew’s childhood hero and then proceeding to wreck havoc elsewhere. This led to a fighting scene which...was 50% Tsuki and Warmage making fun of Miguel’s new superhero moniker “Godsmite”, which was like the second last page. Still, it was one of the few times this confusing mess of a perverted superhero comic had something to look forward to.
