What kickstarted started the tokusatsu journey vs now 🥰 Slowly and surely getting closer to the last hurrah in toku merch
*unfolds my new Misora poster* Step aside, Kazumin, I'm aiming for superstar number one fan (my Sento feelings are hibernating somewhere...for my own sanity, I think lol I had it so bad for him back in the day)
Build main cast were born between 1984 (Kensei Mikami) and 1996 (Kaho Takada); LuPato main cast between 1993 (Seiya Motoki) and 2000 (Asahi Ito); Zero One main cast between 1993 (Ryutaro Okada) and 2001 (Noa Tsurushima); and Geats main cast between 1999 (Kokoro Aoshima) and 2004 (Yuna Hoshino)...why do I feel sad 😂
How unreal is it that they gave Ace lounging around without a shirt (under his jacket) an entire section, during the one time I decided to be a real time viewer again. Unprecedented in the history of toku photobooks isn't this content better off with Revice fans xD But they're actually quite nice, in a "he's wearing a cotton shirt that's $10 000, the pinnacle of old money luxury" and "I wonder how long Hideyoshi Kan lasted with these 'smothering looks' before cracking up" way. All the other photos were lovely too, particularly darling Neon! Newest sunshine of my life because the sun has multiple rays haha I hope there's group shots and a diverse range of two-shots in the next/last book ~~

Monark, the “new school RPG” from former Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei staff, will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch on October 14 in Japan for 8,470 yen, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals.
The game’s staff is as follows:
Planning, Production, and Direction: Fuyuki Hayashi, Mitsuhiro Hoshino
Scenario: Fuyuki Hayashi, Ryutaro Ito
Scenario Supervision and Cooperation: Kazunari Suzuki, Aya Nishitani
Character Design: so-bin
Background Music: Tsukasa Masuko
Developer: Lancarse
Publisher: FuRyu
The protagonist is voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara. The stuffed rabbit character is voiced by Shigeru Chiba.
The story follows the True Student Council, which was established to solve the abnormal situations in the school. The protagonist, who becomes the deputy head of the council, chooses a buddy from four characters to defy the unreasonable.
The main story has multiple endings. There are different routes for each of the four buddy characters. To make multiple playthroughs easier, you can also skip shared routes and advance through different buddy routes.
Battles are command-based with a free move turn system. Increasing your madness will allow you to use more powerful skills, but if you increase it too much, you will go insane and rampage against targets both friend and foe, making it impossible to fight.
There is also an “EGO” system, which represents the player’s desire levels of pride, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth. These change depending on your diagnosis and the choices you make, and also affect the demons you can employ as your “underlings.”
Underlings’ appearances and voices can be customized.
The magazine also has an interview with the developers. Here are some key tidbits:
Hayashi and Hoshino: “We got excited talking about Shin Megami Tensei IF, and how nowadays there are no games like it, so we constructed the prototype for Monark with consideration for the world view and atmosphere we thought important to preserve in a school RPG project.”
Haysashi: “I can’t thank [the creators who joined the project sensing mine and Hoashino’s enthusiasm] enough. The chemistry with the other creators was there and we were able to develop the game with the idea team.”
Suzuki: “While I’m participating in the project as a supervisor, I hve been able to give detailed advice to Hayashi and Ito, who are writing the scenario.”
Ito: “I worked on the stories for 100 students.”
Masuko: “I worked on about 40 songs.”
Both the four-minute debut trailer and six-minute background music introduction video for Monark are scheduled to premiere on June 10 at 12:00 JST.
Visit the teaser website here.

Ok so. Since Hypnosis Mic has a Visual Kei lover in its cast now (I’m talking about Jyushi, of course), I’ve decided to make a post in this blog to introduce some Visual Kei bands to the ones who aren’t familiar with the style. I’m not a pro myself but I love J-rock/VK since I was like 12 so I know my share of bands... Here are some I hc that Jyushi would love too!
Ah, before you ask "Cain, why didn't you add (insert band here) in the post?" the answer is most likely:
I don't know it.
I know it but have never stopped to actually listen to it so I don't feel comfortable recommending it. X JAPAN
I don't listen to it. the GazettE
I chose not to bc I couldn't post 77349072409273 bands so I selected just a few since this post is just an introduction to the style after all.
I forgot.
This post is gonna be kinda long and have some pictures and links to videos and songs and a small introduction about the bands, so I’m gonna put it under a Read More!
Kagrra,
Tumblr media
Kagrra, (神樂 Kagura) was a band formed in 1998 by Isshi (vocals, flute), Akiya (guitar), Shin (guitar, koto), Nao (bass) and Izumi (drums). Their major debut was in 2004 with the single Urei. Their lyrics were in the style of Heian era poetry, their costumes frequently incorporated traditional Japanese clothing styles, and traditional Japanese instruments and drum rhythms were used in some of their songs. On November 10, 2010, it was announced that Kagrra, would be disbanding. As a final request, the members asked that fans refer to it as a "demise" rather than a disbandment. The band released one last CD and held a final tour. The CD, entitled Hyakki Kenran, was released on February 2, 2011. Their final tour began on February 13, 2011 and ended on March 3, 2011. On July 25, 2011, it was announced that vocalist Isshi died in his home on July 18, 2011. He was 32 years old. (Source: Wikipedia)

Plastic Tree
Tumblr media
Plastic Tree, also known as PuraTuri (プラトゥリ) or Pura (プラ) is a Japanese alternative rock band formed in 1993 by Ryutaro Arimura (vocals, backup guitar), Akira Nakayama (guitar), Tadashi Hasegawa (bass) and Shin* (drums). Early in their career, their music had heavy visual kei influences. As time went on, their sound seemed to change and evolve with every album. Plastic Tree combine alternative rock with art rock, electronic, and heavy metal. Their sound is a blend of raw melody, with the occasional orchestral backing track. However, the band does not think that they should be placed into any specific genre. Plastic Tree claim that their sound has been considerably influenced by British bands such as Radiohead and The Cure.
*Shin has been replaced by other two drummers since their debut, and their current drummer is Kenken Sato. (Source: Wikipedia)

DIR EN GREY
Tumblr media
DIR EN GREY is a Japanese metal band formed in 1997, it consists of Kyo (vocals), Kaoru (guitar), Die (guitar), Toshiya (bass) and Shinya (drums). Originally a visual kei band, the members later opted for more subtle attire, but have continued to maintain a dramatic image on stage. (Source: Wikipedia)
Note: Diru's sound has changed A LOT through the years. I'll focus this post in their early works because it's when they had their VK era.

Aside from the Thorman = Truman thing, any idea why Thor was used as the ambassador in SMT I? Wouldn't a deceptive job of hiding as someone as high ranking as an ambassador be more of Odin's job, trickery and associations with the heights of power?
Tumblr media
Thorman isn’t based on Truman, according to Ryotaro Ito, SMT scriptwriter:
https://blueforestbible.tumblr.com/post/109174139417/an-interview-with-ryutaro-ito-megami-tensei
Would we then be correct is assuming that Thorman, who works for the American Embassy in Shin Megami Tensei, is based on former US President Truman?
Actually we took the name from the Northern European legend of Thor. It was only after the game’s release that I realised the name of the president who dropped the nuclear bomb on Japan was Truman. I admit it does all seem a little too coincidental though. I’m starting to wonder if the staff might have been possessed by something back then…
Why Thor and why such a lame not-secret-at-all-but-maybe-that’s-why-it’s-genius identity, honestly, it’s kind of a mystery. I would guess they wanted a god that was powerful and associated with destruction; his secret identity also carries shades of Marvel Thor’s disguise.

I love your metas
aww thank you!! i’m glad you like them!! and sure thing, i’d be happy to! here are a list of my Big Time Faves, but if there’s are specific genres that you like better, please let me know and i can give you even more suggestions!! i used to volunteer as a translator/journalist for a j-music webzine :) so i know quite a few bands haha
out of all the bands that i listen to, the most popular are probably the gazette and dir en grey. they both lean more on the heavier side, i’d say their music is mainly metal/punk. the gazette’s new song ‘falling’ is pretty emblematic of their style, very heavy stuff but also with a transcendent/emotional vibe. one of my favourite dir en grey songs is ‘lotus’, and it’s slightly more artsy and compositionally unusual, like the rest of their stuff. both bands also have softer/less intense songs, like ‘gentle lie’ for the gazette, and ‘glass skin’ for dir en grey.
if you’re into something even more artsy than dir en grey, the lead singer for dir en grey, kyo, has another band called sukekiyo. it’s also metal, but more of the melodic and experimental vibe. i really love their songs ‘anima’ and ‘aoguroi hysteria’.
on the more ‘rock’ and less ‘metal’ side of things, this is kind of basic but i really love one ok rock. their music is very accessible but still packs a very iconic punch. they draw a lot of influence from western emo and pop punk bands, but their music is usually more upbeat. their lyrics feel very ‘shōnen’, but i like that. my favourite songs by them are ‘jibun rock’, ‘onion!’, and ‘re:make’.
in a similar vein are a band i recently discovered, the oral cigarettes. they’re more funky and similarly upbeat, but with less of an emo/pop punk influence. their vibe is really cute and all their songs are bops lmao. ‘kishikaisei story’ and ‘kizukeyo baby’ are great songs!
for something that’s rock but has a little more edge, i’d really recommend miyavi, who is also quite famous. he’s known for his unique slap-guitar playing technique, and his music blends influences of rock, funk, r&b, latin, and hip hop. he’s called it ‘kabuki rock’ and ‘samurai rock’, haha. he’s one of the most prolific and innovative artists in the industry, and his music is very much Relevant to the times. i love ‘what a wonderful world (subarashikikana, kono sekai)’, his guitar vs. rap battle with kreva ‘strong’, and this wonderful funky bop about social media called ‘real?’.
something similarly playful is mucc, which kind of skips between the line of experimental metal and dance rock. it’s hard to describe their style, but i’d say that it’s goth with a sort of sardonic, cynical humour? and it’s hella danceable, for the most part. i love their old classic, ‘moumoku de arugayue no sogaikan’, and their nihilistic anthem ‘kokoro no nai machi’ is my go-to shower song ngl
if you like emo music!! i definitely recommend girugamesh!! the raw emotion and fiery beats in their music really fires me up!!! i’ve sort of fallen out of the loop with them but i still love them very much. some of my favourites by them are ‘crying rain’ and ‘arrow’.
if you like more softer stuff, plastic tree is definitely one of my top bands, ever. i’m not exactly sure how to categorise their style, i guess it’s more shoegaze-y, very dreamy. it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but their songs really carry you off to some faraway place. there’s an element of soft fantasy in their imagery, and it’s sweet and aching at the same time. the lead singer arimura ryutaro’s lyrics are also absolutely singular. sadly some of their newer stuff is not available on american youtube, but some good old songs they have are ‘makka na ito’, ‘sanatorium’, and ‘moonlight’. arimura ryutaro has also released a solo ep which is excellent, and some good tracks off of that are ‘manegoto’ and ‘mata, otsukisama’.
in a slightly more elaborate style is 9goats black out. same sort of dreamy vibe, but way more gothic and slightly sharper. they draw a lot inspiration from things like fairy tales, biblical stories, and gothic literature. their music is pretty amorphous; the melody always takes you somewhere you’re not expecting. so some of their stuff is a little inaccessible. but out of the more standard stuff, i really love ‘lilith’, ‘sink’, and ‘den lille havfrue’.
and lastly, for something that’s really, really japanese, i very much recommend kagrra,. kagrra, uses a lot of traditional japanese composition in their music, and their band name is a reference to kagura (神楽), a genre of traditional japanese music. they’re also a softer band, but their music is absolutely haunting and lovely. my favourites have got to be ‘utakata’ and ‘shiki’.
sorry this was so long!! i hope there is at least something here that is to your taste, haha. i’m not sure what your taste is so i tried to cover most of my bases when it came to japanese rock. of course if there are specific genres that you do like that aren’t mentioned here, please let me know! i also listen to a fair bit of pop/pop-rock, electronic, more experimental weird metal shit, and even classic japanese rock from the 80s and 90s – whether it’s dad rock, or underground rock. i also know some meme bands/air bands, so if you’re into stuff like that too i can also suggest some. if there’s something here that you like especially and want some other bands/some more songs that sound similar, let me know and i can do that too!!

Do you ever think about what the actions of your ocs would be if they had become an ult despair?
I didn’t, but now I will! From those in my story (which I’m sorry is taking ages to update, depression has killed my motivation and creativity):
Yu Ryutaro (Ultimate Policeman): Used his authority to ‘police’ despair, i.e. to ensure that no hope would be allowed
Kazuki Ito (Ultimate Chemist): Created chemical weapons to use on people
Hitoshi Minamino (Ultimate Climber): Helped spread the despair by climbing buildings and displaying despair propaganda.
Izumi Yukawa (Ultimate Videographer): Filmed everyone else spreading despair and broadcast the footage
Naoki Takano (Ultimate contortionist): Used his talent to infiltrate a variety of places to bring about despair from within
Lina Hulsmann (Ultimate tourist): Travelled the world to make sure despair was in all corners of the world
Mami Kodama (Ultimate Tap Dancer): Imagine hearing constant tap dancing...you’d give in to despair quickly!
Hiroko Shizuma (Ultimate Racing Driver): Drove cars into crowds of people
Taki Torisawa (Ultimate Linguist): Used his knowledge of language to get under people’s skin with the messages of despair.
As for Ayako, well...we’ll find out!
