April is sexual assault awareness month, so I thought I’d start it off with some statistics from @rainn : -1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of a completed or attempted rape in her lifetime. -About 3% of American men or 1 in 33 have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. The numbers are worse for non-cis people: trans students are at a very high risk of sexual violence. You can find more statistics on the @rainn website. Looking at these statistics is to remind you that out of every 6 women and 30 men you know, at least one in each group has been assaulted. And when you are insensitive about high profile celebrities being victims, for example, those victims see that. They know that people who victim blame celebrities would not be supportive of them in crisis. The goal of #saam this year is safe online spaces. I try to keep my spaces safe by tagging trigger words in my posts to keep those who have those words blocked from seeing them without consent. Consent: occurs when someone gives permission for something to happen or agrees to do something. Consent cannot be coerced, including online. Digital consent refers to sexual consent that happens through screens. Consent isn’t only important when it comes to sex- every day, there are ways that we need to negotiate our needs with the needs of others.
