it's the last day of the @stardewfanficwritersguild's rarepair week! i really wanted to participate in one of their events after being a member for so long and BOOM, i finally did it!!! i've been working for the past six weeks or so on this baby and when i tell you i really worked hard on it i mean it. i also got to collab with my amazing friend @eemamminy-art who did the art piece below of one of the scenes! i'm really proud of this and though a little nervous, i think you guys will really like it :3

here's the blurb:

A roll of film has twenty-seven total photos. For the longest Haley found herself in not a single one. Until she stopped dating Alex, that is. Now her life seems to be a bit more fulfilling and shared with people who truly do care about her. Like Sam which, who knew he had so much to give.

and here's a little excerpt:

At times like this Haley tried to think of her grandmother. She tried to thread her well manicured nails through her hair like the teeth of the comb, smoothen it with the palm of her hand like the brush, and tie it up with a scrunchie she’d given her, all without seeming like it was the only thing keeping her from falling apart. But it was hard, hard to maintain such a facade when she was the only one that ever seemed to be on her side.

there’s something that bothers me about sam, jodi, and kent

Jodi says this if you have high friendship with her:

“We kind of rushed into our marriage, with Kent being a soldier and all... I hardly got a taste of youth and freedom, and now it's too late to ever go back. Just don't make the same mistake.”

At face value it makes a lot of sense, especially since marrying early and young like this is the case for a lot of military couples.

But Sam has this piece of dialogue that throws things off a little:

“Dad used to work as a garbage man in the city. You don't even want to know some of the things he found in people's trash.”

Which makes me think that Kent had a civilian job and Sam was old enough to remember it at the time (at least from the way he talks about it)

Given that, the timeline seems a little off. There are a million reasonable explanations for how these two pieces of dialogue could be compatible with each other (a break in service, garbage collection being part of being a Ferngill soldier, Sam referring to something that happened before his parents were married, concernedape just forgot lmao)

But to me the most narratively interesting interpretation is that Jodi is lying, and that she married young after getting pregnant out of wedlock (and that Kent didn’t enlist until well after Sam’s birth). She seems like the type who would want to keep that kind of a thing a secret (especially since a lot of people see her as a gossip)

And I think it recontextualizes a lot of what Jodi says and does (like how she emphasizes to the player to not repeat her mistakes, or why she tries to intervene when she thinks Sam is doing something “bad” in his 8 heart event)

do you think sam gravitates towards depressive personalities because he has no idea what his dad's going to be like when he comes home and he's trying to figure it out ? do you think he's such a good positive friend because he thinks if he can fix his friends he can also fix his dad ? do you think he forgets himself in the big brother and good friend role because he has associated his identity with being "the man of the house" and fixing everyone around him ? do you think he takes his mother's anger over broken eggs because it's better than hearing her cry at night ? do you think sam is much much sadder than people see ?
