This week marks the release of Jason Schreier’s Press Reset, an incredibly well-researched book on catastrophic business failure in the gaming industry. Jason’s a good dude, and there’s an excerpt here if you want to check it out. Sadly, game companies going belly-up is such a common occurrence that he couldn’t possibly include them all, and one of the stories left out due to space constraints is one that I happen to be personally familiar with. So, I figured I’d tell it here.

I began working at Acclaim Studios Austin as a sound designer in January of 2000. It was a tumultuous period for the company, including a recent rebranding from their former studio name, “Iguana Entertainment,” and a related, ongoing lawsuit from the ex-founder of Iguana. There were a fair number of ghosts hanging around—the creative director’s license plate read IGUANA, which he never changed, and one of the meeting rooms held a large, empty terrarium—but the studio had actually been owned on paper by Acclaim since 1995, and I didn’t notice any conflicting loyalties. Everyone acted as if we always had been, and always would be, Acclaim employees.

Over the next few years I worked on a respectable array of triple-A titles, including Quarterback Club 2002, Turok: Evolution, and All-Star Baseball 2002 through 2005. (Should it be “All-Stars Baseball,” like attorneys general? Or perhaps a term of venery, like “a zodiac of All-Star Baseball.”) At any rate, it was a fun place to work, and a platformer of hijinks ensued.

But let’s skip to the cutscene. The truth is that none of us in the trenches suspected the end was near until it was absolutely imminent. Yes, Turok: Evolution and Vexx had underperformed, especially when stacked against the cost of development, but games flop in the retail market all the time. And, yes, Showdown: Legends of Wrestling had been hustled out the door before it was ready for reasons no one would explain, and the New York studio’s release of a BMX game featuring unlockable live-action stripper footage had been an incredibly weird marketing ploy for what should have been a straightforward racing title. (Other desperate gimmicks around this time included a £6,000 prize for UK parents who would name their baby “Turok,” an offer to pay off speeding tickets to promote Burnout 2 that quickly proved illegal, and an attempt to buy advertising space on actual tombstones for a Shadow Man sequel.)

But the baseball franchise was an annual moneymaker, and our studio had teams well into development on two major new licenses, 100 Bullets and The Red Star. Enthusiasm was on the upswing. Perhaps I should have paid closer attention when voice actors started calling me to complain that they hadn’t been paid, but at the time it seemed more like a bureaucratic failure than an actual money shortage—and frankly, it was a little naïve of them to expect net-30 in the first place. Industry standard was, like, net-90 at best. So I was told.

Then one Friday afternoon, a few department managers got word that we’d kind of maybe been skipping out on the building lease for let’s-not-admit-how-many months. By Monday morning, everyone’s key cards had been deactivated.

It's a little odd to arrive at work and find a hundred-plus people milling around outside—even odder, I suppose, if your company is not the one being evicted. Acclaim folks mostly just rolled their eyes and debated whether to cut our losses and head to lunch now, while employees of other companies would look dumbfounded and fearful before being encouraged to push their way through the crowd and demonstrate their still-valid key card to the security guard. Finally, the General Manager (hired only a few months earlier, and with a hefty relocation bonus to accommodate his houseboat) announced that we should go home for the day and await news. Several of our coworkers were veterans of the layoff process—like I said, game companies go under a lot—and one of them had already created a Yahoo group to communicate with each other on the assumption that we’d lose access to our work email. A whisper of “get on the VPN and download while you can” rippled through the crowd.

But the real shift in tone came after someone asked about a quick trip inside for personal items, and the answer was a hard, universal “no.” We may have been too busy or ignorant to glance up at any wall-writing, but the building management had not been: they were anticipating a full bankruptcy of the entire company. In that situation, all creditors have equal standing to divide up a company's assets in lengthy court battles, and most get a fraction of what they’re owed. But if the landlords had seized our office contents in lieu of rent before the bankruptcy was declared, they reasoned, then a judge might rule that they had gotten to the treasure chest first, and could lay claim to everything inside as separate from the upcoming asset liquidation.

Ultimately, their gambit failed, but the ruling took a month to settle. In the meantime, knick knacks gathered dust, delivered packages piled up, food rotted on desks, and fish tanks became graveyards. Despite raucous protest from every angle—the office pets alone generated numerous threats of animal cruelty charges—only one employee managed to get in during this time, and only under police escort. He was a British citizen on a work visa, and his paperwork happened to be sitting on his desk, due to expire. Without it, he was facing literal deportation. Fortunately, a uniformed officer took his side (or perhaps just pre-responded to what was clearly a misdemeanor assault in ovo,) and after some tense discussion, the building manager relented, on the condition that the employee touch absolutely nothing beyond the paperwork in question. The forms could go, but the photos of his children would remain.

It’s also a little odd, by the way, to arrive at the unemployment office and find every plastic chair occupied by someone you know. Even odder, I suppose, if you’re actually a former employee of Acclaim Studios Salt Lake, which had shut down only a month or two earlier, and you just uprooted your wife and kids to a whole new city on the assurance that you were one of the lucky ones who got to stay employed. Some of them hadn’t even finished unpacking.

Eventually, we were allowed to enter the old office building one at a time and box up our things under the watchful eye of a court appointee, but by then our list of grievances made the landlords’ ploy seem almost quaint by comparison (except for the animals, which remains un-fucking-forgivable.) We had learned, for example, that in the weeks prior to the bankruptcy, our primary lender had made an offer of $15 million—enough to keep us solvent through our next batch of releases, two of which had already exited playtesting and were ready to be burned and shipped. The only catch was that the head of the board, company founder Greg Fischbach, would have to step down. This was apparently too much of an insult for him to stomach, and he decided that he'd rather see everything burn to the ground. The loan was refused.

Other “way worse than we thought” details included gratuitous self-dealing to vendors owned by board members, the disappearance of expensive art from the New York offices just before closure, and the theft of our last two paychecks. For UK employees, it was even more appalling: Acclaim had, for who knows how long, been withdrawing money from UK paychecks for their government-required pension funds, but never actually putting the money into the retirement accounts. They had stolen tens of thousands of dollars directly from each worker.

Though I generally reside somewhere between mellow and complete doormat on the emotional spectrum, I did get riled enough to send out one bitter email—not to anyone in corporate, but to the creators of a popular webcomic called Penny Arcade, who, in the wake of Acclaim’s bankruptcy announcement, published a milquetoast jibe about Midway’s upcoming Area 51. I told Jerry (a.k.a. “Tycho”) that I was frankly disappointed in their lack of cruelty, and aired as much dirty laundry as I was privy to at the time.

“Surely you can find a comedic gem hidden somewhere in all of this!” I wrote. “Our inevitable mocking on PA has been a small light at the end of a very dark, very long tunnel. Please at least allow us the dignity of having a smile on our faces while we wait in line for food stamps.”

Two days later, a suitably grim comic did appear, implying the existence of a new release from Acclaim whose objective was to run your game company into the ground. In the accompanying news post, Tycho wrote:

“We couldn’t let the Acclaim bankruptcy go without comment, though we initially let it slide thinking about the ordinary gamers who lost their jobs there. They don’t have anything to do with Acclaim’s malevolent Public Relations mongrels, and it wasn’t they who hatched the Titty Bike genre either. Then, we remembered that we have absolutely zero social conscience and love to say mean things.”

Another odd experience, by the way, is digging up a 16-year-old complaint to a webcomic creator for nostalgic reference when you offer that same creator a promotional copy of the gaming memoir you just co-wrote with Sid Meier. Even odder, I suppose, to realize that the original non-Acclaim comic had been about Area 51, which you actually were hired to work on yourself soon after the Acclaim debacle.*

As is often the case in complex bankruptcies, the asset liquidation took another six years to fully stagger its way through court—but in 2010, we did, surprisingly, get the ancient paychecks we were owed, plus an extra $1,700-ish for the company’s apparent violation of the WARN Act. By then, I had two kids and a very different life, for which the money was admittedly helpful. Sadly, Acclaim’s implosion probably isn’t even the most egregious one on record. Our sins were, to my knowledge, all money-related, and at least no one was ever sexually assaulted in our office building. Again, to my knowledge. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure we remain the only historical incident of corporate pet murder. The iguana got out just in time.

*Area 51’s main character was voiced by David Duchovny, and he actually got paid—which was lucky for him, because three years later, Midway also declared bankruptcy.

Notes: Y’all remember when I said I was going to play in in the Dewey Finn + vampire universe? WELL...here we go. Trying out a new “free-form” scene by scene chapter format, rather than a standard chronological order. We’ll see how this plays out

Chapter 1 - Night - Routine

The alarm went off at precisely 8:14pm.

From under the massive pile of blankets covering the twin-sized bed, an arm slithered out, feeling along the nightstand in the dark. The vibrations from the cellphone led the fingers toward their goal, tapping the screen - a few misses - before the noise finally ceased. Finished with its task, the arm retreated under the blankets, tucking itself inward like a snake retreating to its den.

At 8:17pm, the alarm went off again.

This time, an entire body followed the arm out of the blankets, turning off the alarm with one hand, and turning on a small desk lamp with the other. With a wide yawn, they stumbled out of bed, shuffling along the carpeted floor until they reached the bathroom. Luckily, this room had an automatic light fixture, the space filling with a soft white glow. Another automatic feature kicked on around the same time; a TV screen built-in to the vanity mirror taking up most of the wall. At once, the familiar voice of the weather channel anchor echoed around the tiled bathroom.

Magdalena Newton looked a mess when she woke up.

Her only saving grace was the fact she had the forethought to plait her long hair into a braid every night, or else she would have to deal with a rat’s nest besides the general unkept-ness of her appearance first thing in the morning. Absently, she untied the ribbon in her oil-black hair, watching the weatherman as she started to untangle the strands.

Sunrise was at 6:28am that morning; a good amount of time to take care of her errands.

Magdalena tapped the center of her vanity mirror and another screen snapped to life, along with some ring lights attached to a small camera. Within a few seconds, she could see herself in the mirror’s surface, as clear as though she were looking in the actual glass.

Technology was a marvel.

Her reflection was always such a strange thing to look at, to be honest. There were moments it didn’t seem like she was the one looking back at herself, only recently getting the ability to see herself within the past few decades. It was centuries before she could recall what she truly looked like, relying only on a painted portrait or a lover’s descriptions.

Both of which were never accurate.

Wincing at her haggard appearance, Magdalena started to work on fixing herself up for the night. No use going out looking like you just rolled out of bed… even if it were true. She was raised to be a proper lady when in view of other people, and that took some care and effort on her part. Besides, one never knows who you might see wandering the streets so late at night, or whom you might be looking for.

Was it just him, or did the sliding door of his van sound louder when it was dark outside?

Checking his watch in the circular beam of the streetlamp, it was just around 9:00pm when he parked his van outside of his apartment building, sliding open the door to start moving equipment from the vehicle to the home. It had been another late-night practice session at the concert venue with his students, which meant he had spent the last hour or so of practice getting berated by parents for keeping their kids so late.

The gods of rock care not for simple mortal concepts like time. Or calling parents in advance. Or responding to the last 15 text messages you got.

Eh, he knew they would shut up about it once they saw all the hard work the kids were putting into the show. It was shaping up to be quite the epic mid-summer concert spectacular he had seen in his dreams. The uptight little bastards were really doing him proud.

Dewey Finn stuck the handle of his guitar case between his teeth, trying to balance the bottom half with his knee, and simultaneously grab his satchel from under the front seat. It was a good idea, in theory, had it not been for the fact that the angle of the guitar case was preventing him from reaching into the van. He wasn’t about to set his prized guitar case on the street, nor did he feel like making two trips up and down the building’s stairwell.

He lost count of how many times he had sent angry emails to the supervisor about the busted elevator, only to be told it would “take some time” because it was a “historic building”.

Historic was a polite word for collapsing at any given moment.

Dewey couldn’t complain too much, all things considered; the apartment’s mysterious landlord company gave him a break on the rent due to him using the space for education. Apparently, whoever own the place was a fan of music, which gave them an upgrade in the landlord scale from Hell spawn to Minor Annoyance.

Shifting his weight to keep the guitar case balanced, Dewey tried again to reach the satchel, muttering a slew of curses with a mouthful of leather handle.

Magdalena heard the van door before she even rounded the corner, which made her take pause during her speedy trek down the sidewalk. Pulling out her phone, she checked the time: 9:07pm. He was a little earlier than she anticipated, putting a significant kink in her plans for that evening.

For the two and a half weeks, she had clocked him arriving at his apartment no earlier than 9:39pm, which would leave her plenty of time to scale the fire escape until she reached his floor. Nothing scandalous ever happened during her vigils; she was more than content to listen to the sounds of life from his apartment. His weighty footsteps padding around the creaky floors, rummaging around for something to eat, playing video games late into the night. Speaking with other people either in person or on the telephone.

And her favorite hobby of his: singing.

Was it still considered voyeurism if one didn’t actually look at their object of affection? Listening was more than enough. Hearing him plunk out little tunes on his guitar and sing classic rock ballads were something she could have listened to all night if she had the opportunity. She would risk staying out beyond daybreak if he had stayed up all night singing; her own private concert, and he didn’t even know anyone was listening.

For now.

Still, she was debating if it was too early to introduce herself. What is in doing so, she was committing a grave miscalculation of her plans and would therefore have to resort to… unpleasant measures? What if he didn’t want to know her? What if he ended up not liking what he found out?

What if it was something mundane: she wasn’t the right type? The right build or height? The right gender? He hadn’t brought anyone into his apartment save his friend - Nathan? Nolan? - that she could tell. However, his daytime activities were as of yet a mystery, which could have meant this entire plan would end in utter disaster if he were spoken for.

Nope. There was no use thinking the worst of things without even making an attempt.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The more he struggled, the more his jaw began to ache.

Dewey was stubborn more than anything, which his best friend Ned always pointed out just how illogical it was for him to be such a damn slacker 90% of the time when he would get into his hellbent fits of motivation. He was going to make it up the stairs in one go, and he wasn’t going to make a fool of himself doing it.

Such delusions of grandeur can only go so far before one’s hubris decided to take the driver’s seat.

Dewey’s jaw finally gave out, causing his guitar case to tip over across his knee and gain a bit of air before starting to fall to the dirty sidewalk below. The whole thing was like a slow-motion sequence in a movie; Dewey reaching out his hands, fumbling for purchase on the leather case, and ultimately sending it further away from him when he failed to grasp it tight.

Unable to watch the carnage, he screwed his eyes shut tight, waiting for the inevitable crashing of his precious instrument hitting cement-

-which never happened.

Cautiously opening one eye, he peeked out in the darkened space beyond the streetlight, seeing his guitar case being held oh so carefully by a pair of delicate hands. Fully opening his eyes, he followed those hands up their respective arms until he came face to face with his savior. A woman, about his height, stood next to his van with the case secure in her grip. It was hard to see her in the shadows, even more so with her face obscured by the neck of the guitar case.

“Clumsy.” The woman said, her voice clear and crisp in the still air.

Dewey was immediately taken aback by her speech, his overly sensitive musical ear picking up a mix of accents he couldn’t place, and a soft, rounded lisp near the front of her mouth. Within a few seconds, however, he was far more concerned with the welfare of his guitar, reaching out and gently taking the case from her.

“You… you saved Tawny from certain death. My precious axe. My baby.” He cradled the case like a small child, setting it down in the van with great care. “I was such a fool to treat you so carelessly.”

The woman tilted her head, “Tawny?”

“Tawny. Ya know, like the girl from the White Snake video? Only the hottest woman to ever dance on the hood of a car.” Dewey replied, “Not… not that it was her only quality.”

“Never met her, so I couldn’t say.” She replied, a bit of laughter lilting through her voice this time. “She was attractive though, no shame in saying it.”

Whirling around on his heels, Dewey finally turned his full attention to the woman, almost falling over into the passenger door of the van once he got a good view of her. He didn’t know what he expected, but it certainly wasn’t… her.

“Snow White” was the immediate image that popped into his head. She looked pale as a ghost in the dim shadows, with dark hair tied intricately with braided bits gathered into a low ponytail, and her bright blue eyes catching the light like some nocturnal creature. The stark difference between her skin and her inky hair, coupled with her all black ensemble gave her the appearance of a living black and white image. The only color visible in the darkness with a bright, robin’s egg blue scarf tied in a bow around her neck.

“Uhhh…. I… you… wow…” Dewey leaned against the van, trying to act casual. “I mean, w-what’s a girl like you doing on a sidewalk like this? It’s late for a casual urban hike.”

“Protecting defenseless musical instruments from certain death.” She mirrored his stance, placing a hand on her hip. “I moonlight as a vigilante.”

He nodded, holding out his hand in a friendly gesture, “Ah, well, consider me a grateful citizen oh Superhero- Lady- Ma’am. Wow- you know what? That was lame. I’m just gonna show myself out before I embarrass myself any further.”

Dewey started to take his hand away, but not before the woman took hold of it, shaking it with a firm grip, “All in a night’s work, fair citizen.”

The woman - reluctantly- let go of his hand, stepping around him and continuing her way down the sidewalk. As though finally discovering that: yes, he had a brain, and yes, he should use it immediately, Dewey jogged a couple paces to try and catch up to her. She stopped when she heard him approaching, which made him bump into her softly, having not anticipated the sudden pause.

After steadying himself, Dewey ran a hand through his hair awkwardly, “Listen. Maybe… maybe we can start over? Because this whole night is gonna keep me up for weeks if I don’t try and regain my dignity. I’m Dewey Finn.”

Laughing softly, though she covered her mouth delicately with the back of her hand, she nodded. “Fair enough, Dewey Finn. I’m Magdalena.”

   You groaned, shutting your laptop closed as you leaned back. Rubbing your eyes in exhaustion, you slumped forward and lay your head in your arms. Beside you, your friend, Jihoon, chuckled. You didn’t even bother retaliating, too tired to function properly. Not even the serene environment of the bubble shop that usually brought you peace was of any help. You had been looking for a job for a little over a month with no such luck. Everywhere you went, jobs required higher education or past experience-- things you didn’t exactly have.

   Jihoon, amused by your minor vexation, pat your head in mock solace. “Are you giving up?” he asked, taking a sip from his strawberry-flavoured drink.

   Lifting your head, you narrowed your eyes at Jihoon. “You’re not helping, you know that?”

   With a grin, “I know.”

   You let out yet another groan, the noise muffled by the sleeves of your sweater as you covered your face. “What am I going to do, Ji? My landlord’s nice enough to give me an extension on my bills but she can only be patient for so long.” You wanted to cry, stress eating away at your already weakened self. After your guardian got ill, it was up to you to pay for the expenses of your small flat. Unfortunately for you, finding a job wasn’t as easy at it first seemed. You had seen far too many e-mails of rejection and heard far too many muffled calls over the phone with a similar calibre. The cold world was coming at you, and it was coming at you fast and equipped with a steel bat.

   Jihoon pursed his lips, searching for a solution within his web of thoughts. He could faintly remember a passing conversation from out in the streets that he had heard mere hours beforehand. A male, his age most likely, was complaining to a friend about a lack of help at his workplace. His brows knitted together. Where had they been talking about? After a pregnant pause in conversation, his expression lit up. You happened to glance over at that very moment, the imaginary thought of a lightbulb lighting above his head flashing in your mind.

   “A bubble tea shop!” he exclaimed out of nowhere, alarming both you and the customers around you.

   “... What?”

   “This guy, earlier he was complaining about his nonexistent staff help. He mentioned a bubble tea shop if I remember correctly.”

   You grinned. Flinging yourself over the armrest of your chair, you wrapped your arms around Jihoon tightly. “You’re a lifesaver,” you said, triumphant tears welling in your eyes. Opening your laptop again, you searched for bubble tea shops in town. To your pleasant surprise, there were only two. Practically sensing your excitement and your absolute wanting to just hop out of your seat and out the door, Jihoon chuckled. “Go,” he ushered, placing your things into your bag for you. “Text me how it goes.”

   You nodded, thanking Jihoon again before rushing out the door. Your messenger back bounced against your thigh with each step, the dull pain feeling like a mere poke of a spider compared to your adrenaline rush.

   Taking out your phone, you searched up the nearest bubble tea shop again. Luckily, it was within walking distance. With haste, you rushed through the crowds of couples and families alike until you reached the fated shop. The words ‘Bubble Bobble’ hung above the entrance, each letter crafted carefully to reveal a beautifully simple font.

   The shop wasn't big, in size at least. You could see from outside that business was booming, each seat filled with a happy customer sipping on their drinks. Just like Jihoon had insinuated, a large ‘help wanted’ sign was plastered to the otherwise spotless window. It was as if the gods had laid such a glorious proposition in your hands.

   Opening the door, you were greeted with a rush of pleasantly warm air along with an intoxicating fruity smell. Above you, a bell tied to the door’s hinge rang sweetly, it's subtle yet beautiful melody echoing in your ears. Distinctive chatter filled the quaint shop.

   From behind the counter, a worker froze at the sight of you. After a customer in line cleared his throat, he snapped back to reality. Smiling gently, the worker took the customer's order. “That’ll be $3.99, sir.” His voice caught your attention. It was clear yet deep, sounding just as smooth as the wrinkle-free lavender apron he wore around his torso. ‘Park Woojin’ his name tag read. Just below, the words assistant manager was engraved in gold. The name suited him well, something you thought of without even realizing. ‘Way to sound like a creep, [Y/N],’ you chided yourself quietly.

   It wasn’t long before you were at the front of the line. You glanced over your shoulder at the few people who stood behind you. Looking back at Woojin, you smiled tensely. “A small strawberry, please,” you mumbled, glancing at the neat chalk drawings of bubble tea that were delicately drawn onto the large menu.

   Woojin seemed to not hear you, as his hands remained still over the buttons of the cash register, his expression mostly blank aside from the curious wonder that shone in his eyes. Suddenly, his cheeks flushed pink as his eyes widened as if he had just realized he’d done wrong. “Sorry,” he sputtered, frazzled, “could you repeat that?”

   You chuckled, the boy’s flushed complexion lifting your stress even by a little. “Small strawberry,” you repeated. You watched diligently as he tapped away at the cash register, your eyes watching every movement of his hands.

   “$2.99, please.” His fingers tapped against the side of the register as a habit, one he had developed not long after beginning his job as a cashier. He waited patiently, silently admiring you as you pulled out your wallet. “Your name?”

   “[Y/N].”

   As you passed over the change, you remembered the sign outside. “Excuse me-- the sign outside says that you're hiring? I was wondering if I could apply.”

   Woojin’s eyes darted to the window where the very sign was held before they looked back to you. “Yes,” he confirmed, “we are.” He glanced over at a co-worker who had just begun your order. “If you could wait another fifteen minutes, my break is coming up. I could discuss with you then.” You nodded him, moving out of the way as you awaited your order.

   Upon receiving your drink, you waited at one of the seats outside. Looking over the light purple straw of your drink, you zoned out on the sight of a small crow happily bouncing its way across the steel fencing that surrounded the shop. Before you knew it, Woojin stood before your table, awkwardly fiddling with his thumbs as he waited for you to notice him. When you finally did, you jumped ever so slightly. Smiling in his direction, you waited for him to sit down before taking your resumé out and placing it on the table.    “Could you send this to me?” he asked, gesturing to the papers in his hands. “I’ll need to review this over with the main manager before I can say anything.”

   With a nod, you said; “Yeah, of course.”

   He glanced over at your bag. “You don’t happen to have a pen in there, do you?” Without hesitating, you leaned over and fished through the bag’s contents for a pen. Upon finding one, you passed it over to him. Watching as he scribbled something onto the inside of the folder -- not that you minded anyway, it was cheap -- you opened the folder to read what he had written once he handed it back to you.

   He glanced down at his watch, “I have to go back in.” He stood, brushing off imaginary dust from his apron. “Just send your resumé to that e-mail and I’ll look it over as soon as possible.” He sent you a timid smile before disappearing within the glass doors of Bubble Bobble. You watched as the doors swung closed before finishing up your drink. Clearing your throat, you stood just like Woojin had and left with a pounding heart.

   Hopefully, this time you’ll be lucky.

   The next morning, you awoke to a surprise. You had received an email from Woojin, presumably about the open job. Your heart raced as you looked at it, your thumb hovering over the email. Sucking in a deep breath, you opened the email.

   ‘Hello, [Y/F/N]. After going over your resumé, Yoon Jisung (the manager of Bubble Bobble) and I have talked it over. I’d like to formally welcome you to Bubble Bobble’s staff as a cashier…’

   You couldn't read the rest, excitement coursing through your veins. You grinned, skimming over the rest of the email. A schedule was attached; yours most likely. Upon opening it, the realization dawned on you. After continuous efforts, you had finally gotten hired.

   You flopped back against your tousled duvet, staring up at the light-stained ceiling. The wind blew in from the cracked open window, blowing gently over your bare skin, leaving goosebumps in its path. You could hear your curtains brushing against your walls, gentle as a baby’s touch. As every second passed, you could sense yourself becoming more and more jubilant.

   It seemed as though your life was coming together.

   The next Saturday, it was finally time for your first day at work. As you stood outside Bubble Bobble’s doors, a large OPEN sign hanging just above, you pulled out your phone and checked the time. 1:27 PM. You were half an hour early, just as Woojin -- who was to act as your trainer -- instructed. Heaving a worried sigh, you pushed open the doors. It was as if you had only visited then, the familiar yet not feeling of warm air kissing your cheeks, the fruity aroma in the air-- you had experienced it all before, yet it felt so new to you. Unfamiliar, even.

   “[Y/N]!”

   Snapping out of your reverie, you looked up and saw Woojin standing behind the counter, waving you over with a smile. You gulped, smiling a quivering smile as you walked over. The shop was noticeably less busy than it was the other day, but numerous customers were sitting at tables chatting amongst themselves nonetheless.

   “Hey,” Woojin greeted as he let you behind the counter. You replied in a similar fashion, thanking him as he passed you a lavender apron. “We didn’t have time to make a real nametag,” he noted, chuckling awkwardly as he held up a wide, white label. On it, your name was written neatly, a small attempted drawing of a chickadee drawn right next to it.

   Chuckling, you took the nametag from his hands and peeled it off of the paper before pressing it against your chest. “Cute,” you mumbled, referring to the drawing. Suddenly, Woojin coughed, his back turning to you as he covered his mouth. You could just barely see the tips of his ears going red. You laughed again, your amusement clear. Then, Woojin turned to face you, clearing his throat.

   “Anyway,” he began, “I wanted you to come early today to just figure some things out.” He gestured to the register, “This thing’s ancient-- it’s not like most registers these days and Jisung can’t be bothered to get a new one.” Woojin shrugged, pulling you toward the register gently. You looked down at his hand and how it wrapped around your wrist with ease, an unknown feeling bubbling in the pit of your stomach. As he pointed to each button and switch of the cash register, occasionally pausing to serve a customer, you listened intently. You were determined to do well on your first day, and Woojin could tell, a look of slight admiration shimmering in his eyes. “You won’t be making drinks today, that’s for another time. Just do as I told you and remember to smile, okay?’

   You nodded, sending a smile his way. You didn’t notice the way he looked away soon after, scratching the back of his neck as he made his way to the shelf of neatly aligned ingredient jars. He watched curiously as another customer walked in, staring down at his phone as he walked.

   Taking a deep breath, you smiled warmly at the male once he looked up. “Hello, sir,” you greeted, keeping your smile. “What would you like to order today?”

   Woojin raised a brow, a small smile playing his lips like a fiddle. You seemed like a natural, despite being new. His eyes wandered to the customer. It seemed that he agreed with Woojin, something he noticed upon setting his eyes on the male. He was looking at you with round eyes and an almost timid smile. Seeing his expression was odd to Woojin, for a reason he couldn't exactly grasp at.

   “Large taro,” the male smiled. “Please.”

   “Okay-- your name?”

   “Ah-- Donghyun.” He watched as you wrote his name down like Woojin had instructed you to do.

   You smiled again, “That’ll be $4.99, Donghyun.” Donghyun pulled out his wallet, a small smile creeping onto his face. After handing you the appropriate change, Donghyun walked over to the waiting counter, glancing over at you every few seconds. Woojin narrowed his eyes, noting the way his cheekbones began to go pink. “Woojin,” you called, your voice bringing him out of his thoughts. “Large taro.” Turning around, Woojin grabbed a cup and went to work.

   After a few minutes, Woojin almost forgot about your encounter with Donghyuyn. However, no more than ten minutes after his order, he heard your voice telling the aforementioned male to have a nice day. Your voice, he admitted, was nice, soothing to his ears. Something about your tone was serene to him, even when you spoke enthusiastically.

   He shook his head, grabbing another cup and writing ‘Youngmin’ on the front as you had told him. He was just being weird today, he told himself. Just being weird.

   Perhaps, Woojin was wrong when he thought his behaviour would be odd for a mere day. Since you started working, a certain boy -- Donghyun -- had become a regular. Almost every other day, he would stop by and order the same thing every time, a large taro bubble tea. He had not a clue as to why he felt so strange about him. Perhaps it was the way he walked. It was too normal. Or maybe the way he talked to you as he waited for his order, something that prompted Woojin to work faster so that he could just leave.

   “Thanks,” Donghyun said to him, taking his fifth bubble tea that week alone. He looked at Woojin with what seemed like worry before looking away. Woojin glanced at the large clock that adorned the far wall. The shop was to close soon, something you quite obviously knew as you had begun to wipe down the counter. Woojin did the same, taking a clean rag from below the counter and washing it. He heard you thanking Donghyun for coming and telling him to come again; all mandatory barista speech.

   Jisung came in from the darkening outside, each hand full with small pastry plates that customers had left outside during the day. Clean up was done with little to no chatter, the three of you far too tired for conversation. It had been a rush day, as it was the first of seven in which a great deal was offered to customers. Two free bubble teas once you get five hole punches, you chuckled at the thought of such a comical offer. As if the regular person would buy more than five drinks in a single week.

   “Good job today,” Jisung commented, pulling his apron off and hanging it on the hooks within the staff room. Both you and Woojin bowed your heads respectfully, replying back in unison. Jisung fished through his pockets before handing Woojin a key. “Lock up, will you?” He glanced at you, “You have yet to teach [Y/N] how to make drinks.” Woojin complied, waving a goodbye to Jisung as he disappeared down the hall.

   Turning to you, he clapped his hands. “Ready to learn?” he asked, When you nodded, Woojin grinned before ushering you back to the main room. The lights were far dimmer than they were during the day, the lights that hung above each table had been turned off, leaving only the hanging lights above the counters on. Light streamed in from the windows, the shop’s logo leaving its shadowed stamp onto the light wooden flooring.

    You watched as Woojin began to take jars down from the shelves, your eyes tracing the outline of each container in curiosity. It had been an entire fortnight since you began working and you barely ever went near the shelves within work hours. Once Woojin got everything down from the shelves, running a hand through his already tousled hair, he turned to you. You flushed when his dark eyes met yours, your cheeks burning. Unarguably, Park Woojin was by no means unattractive, quite the opposite really. You found it cute, endearing even, the way he spoke with his hands as he started telling you the steps to making bubble tea. He did it quite often-- his hands moving without hesitation whenever he talked.

   “[Y/N]? Are you listening?”

   You jumped, nodding fervently. “Yeah,” you sputtered, “after putting three spoons of the powder in, you dissolve it in hot water.” You blinked, looking down at the jar of yellow-orange powder that he had taken down. You hoped you got that right-- you had gotten a bit lost in your thoughts.

   Woojin stared at you for a moment longer before chuckling to himself. “Rather than me telling you everything, let’s do this step by step.” He held out the jar for you, his other hand holding out a spoon. He watched as you worked diligently, occasionally correcting your mistakes. It wasn’t long before you were pouring a small cup of mango bubble tea. To him, it looked good for your first attempt. “Good job,” he told you, spinning around to grab a straw. Putting the straw into the drink, he handed you the cup. “Try it,” he prompted with a quiet voice.

   You took the cup from his hands, your fingers just barely brushing against his own. Clearing your throat, you took a sip. Woojin raised a brow, his eyes flitting over the features of your face to get an idea of your thoughts. Finally, you smiled. “It’s pretty good,” you smiled proudly, sounding as if you had expected it to go horribly. Woojin clapped his hands, the small gesture making you laugh in amusement.

   “Try it,” you mimicked his voice, earning a playful glare on his end. Despite his faux irritation, Woojin easily took the drink from you and sucked on the straw. Putting the drink onto the counter, he smiled at you.

   “It’s good,” he confessed, his voice genuine and sincere in tone. “For your first try, I’m thoroughly impressed.” A feeling of pride coursed through you. Something about Woojin’s praise was exhilarating to you. Woojin opened his phone for the time despite the clock present. “It’s getting late,” he acknowledged, pushing his phone back into his pant pocket. You glanced out the window at the navy blue sky. Even from insides, you could see the dozens upon dozens of glittering stars that littered about the dark void up above. Without a word, Woojin moved around you, bringing the shaker cup and spoon to the sink. You waited patiently as he cleaned, rolling his sleeves up to his elbows as he worked.

   As he walked back to you, your heart pounded in your ears, sounding deafeningly loud with each step he took. He passed you your beverage, the cup cold against the warmth of your palm. Letting you walk ahead of him, he followed you out the door and only turned to close and lock the entrance.

   “Good night,” you called, walking backwards toward your flat. Woojin, who had been walking the opposite way, smiled at you fondly.

   “Good night.”

   Woojin watched with an unusually sour expression. His mood had considerably dampened the moment he walked in. He had hoped he wouldn’t come that day, just as he had the day before that and the day before that. The male, Donghyun, completely rankled him just by being there.

   It had been an astounding two months since he first taught you how to make bubble tea and since it had become a Saturday-night tradition for him to teach you something new. Within that time period, Woojin noticed things. He noticed the way you laugh, how your body moved with your voice, the corners of your eyes crinkling as you grinned. He noticed how you’d knit your brows together whenever you were confused or frustrated. Despite yourself, he found the latter somewhat winsome.

   He noticed a plethora of things he wouldn’t bat an eyelash at otherwise, and for a while, it confused him. Truthfully, it confused him a lot. It was only when he saw you with another, Jihoon as you had introduced him, did he realize. In that moment, it was as if the tangled string within his mind magically untangled itself to reveal a fine thread.

   Somewhere along the line, he, Park Woojin, had grown feelings for the one and only you.

   At first, he didn’t know how to react. You had quickly become like a best friend to him, and if he were to act on his feelings he wouldn’t know how to feel if you didn’t reciprocate. Then, it all just came together like pieces of a puzzle.

   Unfortunately, one of those pieces was an odd fit.

   Woojin was almost glaring at Donghyun who remained oblivious to his stare, too engrossed in his conversation with you. The shop was near empty that day, so it was very easy to hear your conversation, purposefully or not.

   “If you were a chicken, you’d be impeccable,” he heard Donghyun say. There was a silence before both you and Woojin burst out into laughter. Though, Woojin struggled to muffle his laugh.

   “What?” you asked, your toes curling as you looked on. Donghyun was seemingly proud that he had gotten you to laugh as if he didn’t realize how bad of a pickup line he had just uttered.

   “Can I touch your hand? I want to tell my friends I’ve been touched by an angel,” Donghyun went on, leaning over the counter with an easy smile. You looked down, not noticing the way his smile didn’t reach his eyes. Looking up again, you raised a brow, the breath of a chuckle passing your lips. Crossing your arms in amusement, you leaned against the counter. Meanwhile, Woojin stayed rooted in his spot, trying to seem as though he wasn’t listening.

   Trying, being the keyword.

   “Do you have a Band-Aid? Because I scraped my knee falling for you.”

   This time, you didn’t laugh, nor did Woojin. Upon noticing your lack of reaction, Donghyun laughed quietly to himself, the laugh sounding almost pitiful and dejected. “It’s obvious now, isn’t it?” he asked rhetorically, glancing over at Woojin. “Maybe you didn’t know, but he sure did.” You turned your head to look at Woojin. Your brows furrowed together-- Woojin could practically see the word confusion itself stamped across your forehead. “Your friend there has been glaring at me for over a month.”

   Woojin flushed at getting caught, avoiding eye contact with you. Donghyun breathed out, taking a step back from the counter. He watched as the gears in your head turned and turned until the stopped upon a conclusion. “You like me?” you stuttered, pointing at yourself. Donghyun merely nodded. “So that--”

   “You don’t need to say anything,” Donghyun smiled. “It’s okay,” he looked to Woojin, “I can tell where your heart is.” He let out another weak laugh as if laughing was this defence mechanism, a contraption to stop himself from hurting. “But I didn’t want to bottle up my feelings. Don’t look at me like that, it’s okay. If I’m going to get rejected, might as well make you laugh, right?’

   Woojin’s eyes were blown wide with shock. He hadn’t woken up that morning expecting Donghyun to pour his heart out. He glanced over at you, you who looked similar to him, your eyes wide and jaw slightly ajar. “Donghyun …”

      “It’s really okay.” He glanced at the clock before turning to you with a sad smile. “It’s almost closing time. I’ll get out of your hair now,” he turned. “Have a nice night.”

   And with that, he left the shop. Through the windows, you watched as his back slowly got more and more out of view before it was like he simply vanished into the night.

   The shop was silent. Your co-workers were all having a day-off and Jisung was at a meeting with other branch owners. Neither you nor Woojin uttered a single word. It was as if you had stopped breathing, your chest almost completely still aside from the minute rising and falling.

   Suddenly, Donghyun’s words came back to you. Turning to Woojin with wide eyes, you stuttered your next few words. “I know where your heart is, Woojin … what did he mean by that?” you asked. You didn’t need to get clarification to know that Woojin knew the answer. From the way Donghyun and glanced at him to the way Woojin stared down at his scuffed sneakers as though they were the most interesting things in the world, you just knew.

   Woojin swallowed. With a single look at you, he could tell you were determined to hear an answer. “Well,” he sputtered, “I guess, you can say that Donghyun and I share the same feelings.”

   Your world stopped.

   Donghyun had just confessed. He left, leaving shards of his heart as he walked away. In front of you, Woojin stood with his hands taking a hold of his heart, handing it to you timidly, hesitantly.

   “I like you, [Y/N].”

    A burning sensation went over your entire being. Opening your mouth, you responded with a slow smile.

Some Housing and pressure groups have started a campaign to end what they call “DSS Discrimination”. DSS Discrimination They say landlords and letting agents should not be allowed to state in adverts that they do not wish to take people on as tenants if those tenants are dependent on housing benefit. (The old DSS tag refers to the old days and is shorthand for the “Department for Social Security”, now effectively renamed the Department for Work and Pensions). Landlords and letting agents have, of course, been saying “No DSS” for a long, long time – and increasingly so since the government effectively capped the level of total benefit people could receive and also since they decoupled housing benefit from median market rents. Many (though not all) landlords and letting agents have often pointed out that the level of housing benefit is now too far away from market rents to make it feasible for the tenants to afford market rents. This is especially true of places like London. DSS Discrimination – Private Landlords are Not SOCIAL Landlords Sure, landlords can be made to stop writing “No DSS” on adverts. They cannot be forced to act to mop up the mess created by the government years ago when it sold off the bulk of its council housing stock – stock that has still never been rebuilt in any numbers. Stopping them putting “No DSS” on adverts will not somehow magically make the tenants able to find and prove they have enough income sufficient to pay the market rents.  They either have it or they don’t!  After being  clobbered with endless new regulations and tax  rises, landlords are not willing to house people who cannot afford to pay rent. This campaign is actually a distraction and will waste everyone’s time. i recall Crisis, the housing charity whom I rather like, doing some useful work in the past, showing that tenants on benefits were often good for landlords – and setting up and linking in with local authority and charity “private rented sector access schemes”. This was useful work and could be promoted more by Shelter, if they could only get off their high horses. And I have always applauded the pragmatic and practical things Crisis do, (and far prefer it to the preaching of Shelter) – but surely these days, even they would surely struggle to make lets to housing benefit clients work for landlords in most of London. Facebook can't cope with the world it's created

Governments in Southeast Asia use Facebook as public evidence of wrongdoing, imprisoning activists and journalists for expressing dissent.

Facebook does not have an office in Cambodia or Myanmar, and only a small office in Thailand despite its popularity in the countries.

Facebook is affecting Southeast Asia politically just as much as the rest of the world, but the tech giant does not seem to act.

  As Mark Zuckerberg returns from his latest pilgrimage to Beijing, it's time for him to pay more attention to the countries in Asia where Facebook actually matters.

The Facebook CEO has spent years courting Chinese officials in the hopes of winning admittance to the world's largest internet market. But while he's been beating his head against the Great Firewall, Facebook has swept like wildfire through the rest of Asia, with complicated and sometimes dangerous results.

Asia is now Facebook's biggest user base. That has given the company unprecedented political sway across the continent, where it inadvertently shapes the media consumption of hundreds of millions of people.

The impacts are amplified in the region because vast swathes of relatively new internet users turn to Facebook first as their primary gateway to the rest of the web. Meanwhile, it's become clear that the attitudes and policies the Menlo Park-based company adopted when it was primarily a U.S. social network are inadequate, or even perilous, when applied in authoritarian states, fragile democracies, or nations with deep ethnic divisions.

After months of public outcry in the U.S., Facebook has finally agreed to take seriously charges that the social network played a substantive role in shaping the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

On an earnings call earlier last week, Zuckerberg told investors and reporters "how upset I am that the Russians tried to use our tools to sow mistrust," adding that he was "dead serious" about findings ways to tackle the problem. That would be a positive step — but it must also extend to examining Facebook's tricky impacts in the rest of the world.

I'm writing now from Thailand, and I've recently reported in both Cambodia and Myanmar.

In each of these countries, Facebook has become an accidental political juggernaut — providing public evidence used by authoritarian governments to imprison liberals and journalists for expressing dissent, and amplifying the reach of racist demagogues whose dangerous and false diatribes happen to collect a lot of rabid clicks.

In the early, idealistic days of the internet, "the platforms used to maintain they were paper mills rather than newspapers," says Scott Malcomson, author of Splinternet: How Geopolitics and Commerce Are Fragmenting the World Wide Web and director of special projects at Texas-based Strategic Insight Group. But it's no longer possible to think of the internet as a utopian great leveler, a world-flattener that empowers only the virtuous masses.

The reality is that the effects of the digital revolution are complex and varied around the globe.

And in many parts of the world the stakes include life, liberty, and free speech — the most basic of all political rights. Facebook can no longer deny its moral responsibility to try to understand how cyberspace, law, and politics collide in each of the countries where it operates, nor its responsibility to do something about it.

In Myanmar today, Facebook is the internet.

When you buy a smartphone from a sidewalk vendor in Yangon, the seller will activate a Facebook account for novice users on the spot. Many people don't bother with email if they have Facebook — and many people in Myanmar have multiple Facebook accounts.

This is all a staggeringly recent development. The junta that controlled the country until 2011 kept the price of SIM cards artificially very high to put them out of the reach of most people in Myanmar, and thus control the flow of information.

When I first visited Yangon in spring 2014, only about 1 percent of the population of 52 million had access to the internet. A government official who attempted to defend the ethnic categories listed on Myanmar's controversial census — there was no "Rohingya" category, but only "Bengali" — afterward gave me an informational DVD about the census. Today, 46 million people, or 89 percent of the population, access the internet, mostly through smartphones and mostly through Facebook — and there are far fewer stalls hawking bootleg DVDs on the streets of Yangon.

The rush online has given rise to entrepreneurial dreams and a nascent startup sector, but the internet has also given a megaphone to strident political voices formerly on the margins and made them mainstream.

Ashin Wirathu, a monk known as "the Burmese bin Laden" who has called for the expulsion of the Rohingya population, told BuzzFeed News reporter Sheera Frenkel in 2016 that his anti-Muslim Ma Ba Tha movement had gained national momentum due to Facebook. "If the internet had not come to [Myanmar], not many people would know my opinion and messages like now," he said. "The internet and Facebook are very useful and important to spread my messages," such as his call for boycotting Muslim businesses. Earlier this year, Wirathu was banned from making public sermons, but he continues to operate dozens of inflammatory Facebook pages.

The human-rights crisis in Rakhine state has escalated to what the United Nations' top human rights official declared in September was "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing" — citing the Myanmar military's extrajudicial killings, rapes, and other atrocities committed against the Rohingya population. More than 600,000 refugees are estimated to have crossed over the border into Bangladesh, where they must try to survive in muddy refugee camps with little support from any government.

The roots of ethnic hatreds in Myanmar run deep, but a recent flurry of fake news posts — including doctored photos of Rohingya supposedly burning their own homes or attacking Burmese Buddhists — has stoked popular support, or at least tolerance, for the army's hardline approach. Debunked rumors even appear on the Facebook pages of government officials.

"Facebook has become a bit like an absentee landlord in Southeast Asia," says Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's Asia division. "When Buddhist extremists start instigating action against Muslims [in Myanmar], looking around for the local Facebook representative is hopeless — there isn't one. Instead, it's sort of, complain into the void and hope some relief arrives before it's too late — and that's assuming you know a language that relevant Facebook staff are conversant in."

A spokesperson for Facebook confirmed that the company has no office in Myanmar or Cambodia, although it has consultants in each country and a regional office in Thailand. In an emailed statement to Foreign Policy, the spokesperson wrote, "We have clear rules on what can and cannot be shared on Facebook, technology that helps prevent abusive behavior, and we work with safety experts and civil society to educate people about our services."

The spokesperson said that a Facebook "product and integrity research team" would be visiting Southeast Asia this month to assess regional challenges. Internally, Facebook has also begun to grapple with how to identify and define "hate speech" in different countries.

In Myanmar, the word "kalar," or "kala," can be used as a simple prefix to refer to things of South Indian origin, like kala beans — or it can be used as a nasty ethnic slur. Richard Allen, a Facebook vice president for public policy, wrote in a blog post this summer about the tricky case of context-dependent words: "The term can be used as an inflammatory slur, including as an attack by Buddhist nationalists against Muslims. We looked at the way the word's use was evolving, and decided our policy should be to remove it as hate speech when used to attack a person or group, but not in the other harmless use cases."

Implementing the guideline was not so easy. "We've had trouble enforcing this policy correctly recently, mainly due to the challenges of understanding the context," Allen wrote. "After further examination, we've been able to get it right. But we expect this to be a long-term challenge."

It's a positive sign that Facebook is studying the way hate speech spreads online in Myanmar, and elsewhere, but that won't undo the damage that's already happened — or give 600,000 refugees a safe place to call home.

What's different about tech as opposed to other global industries — say, automobiles or pharmaceuticals — is that only after the products are released into the world do the developers gain any real understanding of what the existential problems will be. And then it may be too late.

Jatupat Boonpattaraksa, a Thai student activist who joined several peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations in 2014, is in jail right now for content he posted Facebook.

Last December, the BBC Thai published a new documentary about the Thai royal family, which contained unflattering information about the then-Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, now King Rama X. Jatupat, a 25-year-old member of Thailand's New Democracy Movement, shared the link on Facebook and quoted some of its content. The next day he was arrested by plainclothes police officers for violating the country's antiquated lèse-majesté law — which outlaws insulting or defaming the monarchy, and which is selectively deployed by the junta that seized power in 2014 to suppress its critics with a veneer of legality. Thousands of people shared the BBC documentary; most of them were not arrested — but Jatupat's prosecution was used to send a chilling message to others.

The day after his arrest, he was released on a 400,000 baht ($12,000) bail. Jatupat turned to Facebook to joke: "The [Thai] economy is poor so they took my bail money." The court ordered him back to prison for the comment, and his subsequent six requests for bail were denied. In August 2017, he was sentenced to five years in prison for the initial Facebook post; after he pleaded guilty, his sentence was commuted to 2.5 years.

Jatupat's case is hardly unique. Before the 2014 coup, six people were in prison on lèse-majesté charges. The junta dramatically stepped up convictions to silence its critics. Between May 2014 and March 2017, at least 90 people were arrested and 45 of them sentenced, according to research by iLaw, a Bangkok-based nongovernmental organization that tracks legislation. What's more, the majority of these recent cases have involved social media — Facebook posts and tweets — turning offhand remarks into prosecutable offenses. In these recent cases, only 17 percent of those arrested were released on bail before their trial dates. Many cases were tried in military courts.

Why is Facebook so useful to the junta? First, its insistence on a "real name-only" policy makes for easy tracking of dissidents. Even in cases where people successfully mask their names, their web of social connections makes them potentially easy to identify. (In the U.S., sex workers have already found themselves inadvertently exposed by Facebook's data-aggregation and friend suggestions.) Hard-to-navigate privacy settings can mean that what people mistakenly think of as private speech, limited to a small group of friends, is often anything but. "If you make a certain kind of comment online, you can quickly be sent to prison in Thailand," says iLaw researcher Anon Chawalawan.

The news isn't all bad. Over the past five years, Facebook helped enable a groundswell of citizen journalism and activism in Cambodia — but a recent experimental tweak to the timeline function pulled the rug out from under regular news posters, at a time when the political tolerance for free speech was already shrinking.

In January 2014, I met Cambodian monk But Buntenh in a small room on the third floor of a ramshackle office building in Phnom Penh. The founder of the Independent Monk Network for Social Justice, he was seated on an embroidered cushion on the floor and surrounded by electric cords charging his various devices: a laptop, tablet computer, and smartphone.

Buntenh had recently begun to organize what he called "monk reporters" to use their smartphone cameras to document peaceful human rights demonstrations in Cambodia's capital — including garment workers marching to raise the minimum wage and families evicted for development projects marching to demand compensation or adequate rehousing. (Many were living in shantytowns, with blue tarp roofs pulled between tent poles.)

"I am trying to encourage monks to become more political," he told me at the time. "We cannot wait for our political parties to change; we must do it ourselves." Buntenh had by then recruited about 5,000 monks to his watchdog army. Their cause took a grave turn on Jan. 3, when military police opened fireon striking garment workers in Phnom Penh, and at least seven people were killed. Photos, videos, and firsthand reports — from the monk's group and from other witnesses — quickly circulated on social media, especially Facebook and Line. That put pressure on Cambodian politicians and caught the attention of domestic and international news media and the foreign brands — Nike, Adidas, Puma, Gap — that were some of the factories' biggest customers. The minimum wage was eventually raised, although the widows and families of the deceased workers were never compensated for their loss in any significant way.

I visited Cambodia a half dozen more times between 2014 and 2016 to report on the evolution of the country's intertwined social justice movements, collectively referred to as the "Cambodian Spring." The internet was absolutely essential to the minimum-wage and land-rights campaigns, and the sharpest knife in the toolbox was Facebook. Activists turned to Facebook for news reports from the Cambodia Daily and Radio Free Asia, for updates from human rights groups like LICADHO, and for messages from march organizers and journalists. A 2016 survey conducted by the Asia Foundation found that more Cambodians said they got their news from Facebook and the internet than from watching TV. "Facebook became the country's most important source of news, giving the government some headaches as its old information monopoly has been circumvented," says Sebastian Strangio, author of Hun Sen's Cambodia.

These are darker times now in Cambodia, as earlier this year the government arrested the leader of the main opposition party, expelled the staff of the U.S. State Department-funded National Democratic Institute, and forced the independent Cambodia Daily to shut down because of an unpaid tax bill. Facebook didn't change the political winds, but it did inadvertently squeeze remaining channels of dissent.

It's unlikely that anyone in Silicon Valley was thinking of strongman Prime Minister Hun Sen's political repression when Cambodia was selected in October as one of six pilot countries to test out a new timeline feature, which separates news items from personal posts. A Facebook blog post by Head of News Feed Adam Mosseri explained that the goal was "to understand if people prefer to have separate places for personal and public content."

But the BBC has reported that one unintended impact was dramatically shrinking the number of people who would see published items. "Out of all the countries in the world, why Cambodia? This couldn't have come at a worse time," a Cambodian blogger told the BBC, explaining that the number of people who saw her public video had dropped by more than 80 percent. "Suddenly I realized, wow, they actually hold so much power.… [Facebook] can crush us just like that if they want to."

Because Cambodia is a small market of 16 million people, testing a new feature there may have seemed like a perfectly reasonable choice to an engineering product team.

But when your product is not sneakers or toasters, but the single most important way that people in that country receive news and information, it bears a different kind of consideration.

The Cambodia Daily is now attempting a comeback, and this too will depend on Facebook. The journal has recently started publishing Khmer-language essays and voice pieces through its Facebook page, bearing a new motto, "Second Life: A Life Online." It remains to be seen how successful or long-lived the effort will be, but one hopes that its fate won't be determined by Menlo Park suddenly switching algorithms without notice or consultation. As a former Daily staffer told me — via Facebook, naturally — "I really like the idea, but it's a big risk," adding that the publisher "might get arrested for this … maybe."

These three cases are very different. But they all speak to the need for Facebook to localize, diversify its policies, and decide what kind of values and culture it's trying to promote.

In theory, the fourth-most valuable internet company in the United States — worth more than half a trillion dollars — knows this. In a statement emailed to FP, a Facebook spokesperson wrote, "There is no ‘one size fits all' approach that works everywhere, and we are committed to working closely with local organizations to develop education programs, policies and products that meet people's needs in different parts of the world."

But so far, the social network hasn't lived up to its ideals, says Human Rights Watch's Robertson. "They are going to need to build up their capacity to get further into the game, talking with all the stakeholders from civil society, business and government to ensure they know the political and social context and are prepared to respond in a substantive, rights respecting way." He adds: "People entrust their private and public lives to this platform — so decisions need to have customer buy-in, and communications need to reflect two-way dialogue."

For a long time, Silicon Valley espoused a dogma of information neutrality — claiming, falsely, that search engines and social networks were only impartial tools. But, at a time when algorithms can determine whether an entire country sees genuine news or hate-filled propaganda, this idea can't be sustained. "Move fast and break things" was Facebook's mantra for developers until 2014, signaling the twin totems of speed and aggression that animate many programmers and venture capitalists in the U.S. tech industry. Yet it's a lot less appealing when the things being broken are people.

Hosting Proms and Selling Cows: North Korean Embassies Scrounge for Cash

SOFIA, Bulgaria--While the embassies of most countries promote the interests of companies back home, North Korea’s are in business for themselves.

A series of tough sanctions by the United Nations and an executive order recently signed by President Trump have sought to economically isolate the nuclear-armed regime of Kim Jong-un. But Pyongyang has held on to an array of profit-making ventures, some of which operate in the roughly 40 embassies of the hermit kingdom.

Many of these enterprises are hard to trace, but at least one is impossible to miss. For years, neighbors have complained about the noise coming from a large, fenced-in building here in a southern section of Bulgaria’s capital city. It hosts parties a few times a week, many of them capped off with a late-night flurry of fireworks, shot from the roof.

“It isn’t loud now,” one neighbor, Bonka Nikolova, said as a parade of wedding guests filed into the building. “But if they paid for fireworks, there will be fireworks.”

Ms. Nikolova has called the police, but there isn’t much they can do. The building, filled with gilded halls that can be rented for events, enjoys a kind of diplomatic immunity courtesy of its owner: the government of North Korea.

North Korean embassies have spent decades running cash-raising schemes, nearly all them illicit under current international law. Diplomats and their underlings have brokered deals for weapons and drugs, and more mundane products like machine tools and cows. They have also smuggled liquor, cigarettes, luxury cars and anything else that can be imported duty free and then sold at a gain.

“My late father-in-law was an ambassador,” said Marcus Noland, who studies North Korea and is executive vice president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, “and he told me that in India, years ago, it was known within the diplomatic corps that if you wanted to buy beef, you could knock on the backdoor of the North Korean embassy in Delhi. They ran an abattoir in the basement.”

Earning money is a necessity for the embassies--North Korea doesn’t fund them. Instead, they are expected to support themselves and send home any surplus.

Despite the sanctions it is under, North Korea did $6.5 billion in trade last year. Analysts estimate that embassy revenues represent a small sum compared with the country’s other low-profile foreign ventures.

Those included cadres of bodyguards leased to dictators who don’t trust their own citizens, laborers dispatched to work sites around the world who must remit their wages and state-owned companies that export ballistic missiles and other arms to countries like Syria.

In some cases, diplomats get involved with weapons deals. The third private secretary of the North Korean embassy in Beijing doubled as an employee of the Haegeumgang Trading Company. The company, according to a United Nations report, supplied surface-to-air missiles and radar systems to Mozambique. Haegeumgang also sold machine tools, and an ad in 2014 for those products on a Chinese website listed the company headquarters at the same address as the North Korean embassy in Beijing.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to faxed questions.

Diplomats for the country have been ad hoc entrepreneurs since at least 1976. That year, Norway’s police found through surveillance that every member of the North Korean embassy in Oslo was involved in the import and sale of as many as 10,000 bottles of spirits and 100,000 cigarettes.

Today, sanctions have forced many embassies to curb their ambitions, with some intent on keeping the lowest possible profile.

The North Korean embassy in London sits unobtrusively in Ealing, a suburb-like section of London, just another brick house in a row of them. The difference is a small sign, barely visible from outside the wrought iron fence: “Residence and office, embassy of D.P.R. Korea.”

Aside from black luxury sedans in the driveway, there are rarely signs of life in the building, even to neighbors.

“I’ve never seen anyone go in or out of there,” said Ali Wiseman, a student who lives in a group house two doors down. “And I’ve been here a year.”

His roommate, Rupert Thomson, has seen people there. “I once saw three women working on the lawn out front and they did everything to not look at me,” he said.

The way that the London embassy sustains itself is a mystery. One theory comes from Kim Joo-il, a former member of the North Korean military who defected and moved to London in 2007. He said he often saw embassy employees at a type of Sunday flea market called a car-boot sale.

“They are always there buying secondhand electronics, toys, dolls, kitchen goods,” Mr. Kim said through an interpreter, seated at a restaurant he owns in a London suburb. “Some of these things they are cleaning up and fixing to resell, others they are sending home to North Korea.”

North Korean embassies in the former eastern bloc, where the missions were long ago granted generous square footage, have a more lucrative stratagem.

In Poland, 40 businesses are listed at the address of the North Korean embassy in Warsaw, including a pharmaceutical company, several advertising agencies and a yacht club. How many of these businesses are actually staffed there is unclear.

In Sofia, the embassy owns a number of buildings on two separate properties. One is a complex that includes the embassy itself. Passers-by can pause at a glass display case--standard issue for embassies in the city--filled with photographs. One captures the Supreme Leader beaming at a crowd, others were of missiles that had just been launched.

The event space, known as Terra Residence, is a 15-minute walk east. It’s the former home of the North Korean ambassador, built in the 1980s with dazzle instead of comfort in mind. Photos on Terra’s promotional website show an interior that is essentially a communist take on Versailles--a series of huge and austere halls with chandeliers, gold curtains and paintings of ballerinas.

Terra rents out the space for magazine photo sessions, music videos and television ads, including a handful for national banks and one for the Bulgarian version of “Celebrity Apprentice.” Its main business is weddings, proms and corporate events.

Few attendees, it seems, realize they are spending the evening on North Korean property.

“I knew it was a former embassy building, but I had no idea it was owned by North Korea,” said Bilyana Dimitrova, who attended a friend’s wedding at Terra in September. “The atmosphere was very pleasant.”

A spokeswoman for Terra, Anelia Baklova, wrote in an email that the company has had a long-term lease with the embassy of North Korea that predates the imposition of economic sanctions. When the U.N. approved stricter sanctions, this year and last, Terra “froze” its payments, she said. The company has not been evicted, she wrote, because of the “considerable amount of money” it had spent on renovations and upkeep.

Emails to the embassy were not returned.

Some countries have succeeded in shutting down businesses that rent from North Korea. In May, Germany closed a youth hostel that was operating in what was originally North Korean diplomatic quarters.

The governments of Poland and Bulgaria have so far been unable to end the ancillary activities. A spokesman for the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had repeatedly raised the issue of renting out space with North Korean officials here, urging them to “use properties in Sofia solely for diplomatic and consular activities.”

Terra, unlike its landlord, has tried to become a more agreeable neighbor. People who live across the street say that notices are now taped on the doors of their apartment building a day before there will be fireworks, giving a heads up and promising that the show will end by 10 p.m.

Surprisingly, residents didn’t seem particularly vexed about living near an enterprise that has pumped money into the world’s most repressive and notorious regime. But that may say more about Bulgaria’s government than the dangers of North Korea.

“When you live in a place where it’s so difficult to get even trivial stuff done,” said Ms. Nikolova, “it’s hard to worry about World War III.”

After few days of trying to calm down I still feel so wronged that I need to get it off my chest. In short words someone told me they don’t want to know me anymore and I wanted to cry and yell and the same time.

So let’s start from the beginning. Most people on tumblr don’t know this about me but for almost 4 years I used to work as private Polish-English interpreter and tutor here in England (meaning it was my own business). During that period I met many people that needed my help and assistance. Almost 2 years ago I was introduced by one of my regular clients to another one who needed help calling their internet provider as both husband and wife couldn’t and still can’t speak any English. I have to pick some nickname for that woman (the wife) – I will refer to her as Mrs X. That day I helped them and got paid for my work – simple as that.

That was my job, so nothing wrong there. But since Mrs X met me and got my contact details she started to call me and text me about everything that needed to be done. Nothing was too little or too big for her to contact me. Most of her request were pretty standard: go with me to the bank, phone bank, gas, internet, mobile network, benefits, taxes read and translate emails and many, many more. Usually I have done these things for other clients as well but it would only be one of them, sometimes few but not all of them. I have no idea how they had lived and coped before they met me because it seemed that they were unable to do anything without me.

It was my job and I also genuinely wanted to help them as they seemed to struggle with their everyday life in England. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that Mrs X doesn’t take “no” for an answer. If she requested me coming over, and I texted back saying that I cannot fit her into my schedule, she would call me and demand to know my schedule hour by hour so she could use it against me. She would say things like:

“You have 1 hour between morning tutoring session and the afternoon one, you have to come and help me.”

“Okay, I can see you are busy all day, so you can come 9pm then, you are free at that time. “

Or when she saw I really couldn’t come and we would pick some day in the future, she would still text me almost every day to check if I can come in a day before. If the time and hour were inconvenient for her she would moan about it until I bend and change it for the one inconvenient  for me.  And when we were to meet for example at 5pm she would text me at 4pm saying that I can come already.  I don’t know about other people but when I make plans for 5pm then I will be ready for 5 pm, not earlier.

Another problem was that she lives rather close (not for long but I will get to that in a minute) and since it was less than 10 minutes away on foot she was using this as a reason to brush off any of my tries to refuse her when I physically couldn’t cope with my workload. So I ended it up in a situation when I had to run every time she needed me.

Another horrible thing was that Mrs X moans and rants a lot. Every time I left her house I was loaded with such an awful negative energy that I also started to behave like her at least on that day. I was tired and every single thing could set me off. I was getting irritated easily. Overall I wasn’t the nicest person on days I had meet her. To my closest friend and also my mum I started to refer to Mrs X as a toxic person.

She moaned and rant about England, job, Brexit and other things. She blamed and still blames everyone but herself for all the problems they have. In her opinion she did not work for the past 8 years, apart from random 2-3 months because no one wanted to give her a chance because she was Polish. When I took it upon myself to try to find her a job, she was refusing to even consider all the jobs I found for her. “This is too far.” “You want me to walk in the dark to get to/from work???”. “They pay too little”. “Too much physical work”. So I stopped looking. It became clear that she doesn’t work because she doesn’t really want to work. In conclusion a only person to work for a 3 people family (they also have daughter, now 19 years old) was her husband. He would work long hours of physical work just to try to earn enough for a living. Poor man.

Also Mrs X did not feel like they do not have money. She would spend money recklessly and way over her budget . She was spending her husband’s money when she did not make any contribution to the house budget. Biggest example were the small things like groceries - she said she will not pick the cheapest option because she has not come to this country to eat only bread and beans. Well, if she had just picked cheaper options of normal food she could have easily saved up 50 pounds a week. Looking at this over the years, they wouldn’t have the debts they have right now.

Which brings me to the last thing – their debts. For few months when the husband was without work few years ago they took a loan – in my opinion a lot higher that they should have – and they still have most of it to pay as the interest are growing. They also used credit card to cope with the lack of money. The money that they now own the bank is about a full annual income of normally working person.  

Mrs X’s husband was forced to change jobs and their income has fallen even more. Also they daughter was also an adult now so they stopped receiving help from the government for that. But of course, Mrs X blamed it all on Brexit and people hating Polish people.

And then about a month ago their landlord asked them to move out as the rent was to go up and they refused to pay it. So they were left with one option – to go back to Poland. But the debts you ask? So Mrs X called me again – I needed to go to the bank with.

Small disclaimer:  I closed my business over 6 month ago and I work full time in a completely different field and I have to commute to work every day for at least 1,5h one way. My only virtually  free days are Sundays and Mondays.

So I went with them and she complained all that time about it being unfair that they need to leave the country and pay the debts as the Polish currency is a lot less that British pound. In the bank they gave us a number for Collection and Recovery which is a department for people who cannot pay their loans back. So of course the following Monday I had to go to their place and make a phone call – over an 1 hour long phone call. And then last Monday I had to go and call again. Their problems are never ending. When leaving I reminded them that because the husband now works as a self-employed, he will have to fill in his Tax Return which they seemed to completely forget about.

So all of this writing is for this last bit.

On Saturday Mrs X texted me offering me more money that she ever paid me to come over and do their Taxes for them. She added that I promised them that I would do it for them – nothing like that happened, we once talked few months ago that if I am available I can have a look at it. So my response was that I haven’t promised and they should ask their daughter to translate the questions as the Tax Return in the UK is not that complicated. Ah…. did I forget to mention that their daughter, the one that lives with them speaks English?! Yes, they had a English speaking daughter at home and they always called me – this was always beyond my understanding. I am preparing for my holiday at the moment and also not long after that I will be moving so I have no time to spare for that horrible woman.

Then she send me a text - here comes the translation:

“I hope that you go to church today and realise that you refused to help someone and I was even willing to pay you. Goodbye”

 I was still writing my respond when a second text came:

“To be completely honest you have never done anything for me for free, I was always paying you. Don’t text me back because I don’t want to know you.”

 WTF!!! I wanted to explode. She was always horrible to me, I refused her once and she doesn’t want to know me. I regret I have ever met her. Over the past 2 years I have known her she was losing all her friends one by one so now I believe she only has few left in Poland, none in England.

It made me feel like a horrible person, like I have done something wrong. But maybe it is better this way because I had a fear she would still contact me from Poland for my help since they are leaving with so many problems.

Also she is planning to leave the country without paying the last rent, saying that they can take the deposit from 8 years ago – that’s not how things should be done.

 I feel slightly better now. Probably no one has read it but it made me calm down a little bit.

Please don’t tell me I was wrong all along.
