Friday, April 26: Soilwork, "The Flameout"
Natural Born Chaos was both a breakthrough turning point as well as an intermediate step for Soilwork: the combination of sharper and streamlined songwriting with Devin Townsend’s production positioned the band as a leading force in the next vanguard of Swedish melodic death metal, but in hindsight their fourth record was also an iterative move towards what they would ultimately become over the subsequent several records.  As such, something like “The Flameout” was a bridge between two worlds- it was wild and wooly in a way that felt like a natural follow-up to A Predator’s Portrait, but there was also more space and atmosphere, like the guys were trying to create more ambience and texture beyond Bjӧrn “Speed” Strid’s not yet refined use of clean singing in sections.  Looking back over 20 years later, the track plays like the band was aiming towards something more progressive to overlay on top of the usual In Flames-isms, but weren’t entirely clear on what that something was. So “The Flameout” was all over the place, and on its own was a differentiating track for Soilwork in 2002, though in the end it was more of a rough draft of things to come.

Soilwork - Nous Sommes La Guerre
Nous sommes la guerre
Nous sommes le contraire
Nous sommes l'opposition
Nous attendons le porteur de lumière
I can feel the shadows enter, risin' from the earth
Now that everyone is giving me the widest berth
I have nightly visits, sentient absence watchin' me
Nurturin' the itch where other worlds are scratchin' me
When I heard the voices from below
Gently tellin' me where I should go
Speakin' demon tongues in stereo
Face the undetermined, let it show
Let it show
So could you hold my fire?
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
It's the brimstone sparkling, touching me at parts unseen
Just a sharp reminder prodding at what could have been
Would you share my burden, help me lay this ghost to rest?
If you disagree then please pretend it's for the best
Every trial that we must undergo
Trapped between the current and the flow
Melodies above the hellish drone
Sound the unrefined and let it go
So could you hold my fire?
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
Hold my fire
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
Nous sommes la guerre
Nous sommes le contraire
Nous sommes l'opposition
Nous attendons le porteur de lumière

I actually quite like a good chunk of soilwork's new stuff, but god i would explode if they made another album in the style of Stabbing the Drama. It feels a lot more raw and angry and i think it suits them a little better than the Grand Melodrama
