Autobianchi A112 Elegant, 1978, by Zagato. The coachuilder's proposal for a limited edition ungraded version of the Autobianchi supermini included 14-inch alloy wheels, rectangular headlamps, accent stripes and new seats with high-grade cloth and leather. Unveiled at the Turin Motor show, Zagato's prototype went no further though it predicted the development of luxurious small cars in the 80s and beyond

Audi 50, 1974. The 50 was Germany's first small hatchback "supermini." It was developed by the newly formed Audi NSU Auto Union AG initially intended to replace NSU's line-up of small, rear-engined sedans. The design was by Marcello Gandini at Bertone finalised by Audi's own Claus Luthe. The "K50" programme was moved to expand Audi's range, debuting in April 1974. Parent group Volkswagen saw the potential of the small hatchback so in September 1974 the K50 was also launched as the VW Polo. Cheaper, with a broader range than the 50, the Polo easily outsold the Audi. The 50 was discontinued and not replaced in 1978. The Polo is now in its 6th generation

These sketches for a fic I'm writing set in a ST:TNG AU are particularly special to me as they almost didn't happen. Earlier today returning from a trip to buy gluten free food at a specialist supermarket I got off the bus and my (older but much fitter) OH dashed across a busy road expecting me to do the same. Unfortunately, as I did so I tripped and fell in the path of an oncoming car. I was bruised and hurt but couldn't move. And I was terrified. Luckily the car stopped for my OH to help me up and carry me to our house. The driver even asked him if was OK (I wasn't lol). I have since had minor medical attention for a sprained ankle and severe contusions to my left knee and elbow. I'm taking painkillers and sedatives for shock. But what is going through my head is that if that driver had been a boy racer in a supermini and not a middle aged lady driving at 20 mph I might not be here now to tell the tale and these drawings would not exist...
