St Finnian’s Day
Tumblr media
The Witch by Lucien-Levy Dhurmer. Source: Pinterest
Today is St Finnian’s Day, also known as St Lucia’s or St Lucy’s Eve. Lucia was a saint much honoured in Scandinavia and her memory lingered long in those parts of northern Britain occupied by Scandinavian settlers during the Viking invasions. Tonight the so-called Lucian witches are rumoured to be abroad, surrounded by evil faeries and their sinister black cat familiars. This echo of pre-Christian darkness at the darkest time of the year for some reason became associated with the blameless Irish saint, Finnian. Apparently Finnian’s otherworldly followers will abduct anyone unwise enough to be out tonight without having eaten his or her supper. This tall tale probably owes more to frustrated parents trying to get their children to eat their greens than any maligned saint or pagan predator.
Little is known of Finnian other than he died at Clonnard in Ireland, in the sixth century, apparently sacrificing himself so that ‘the people of the Gael’ would not die of the plague. Today was also the day that Christmas Season Games would begin to be played. With intriguing names like My Lady’s Toilet and Hawld Hard, most were a variant on forfeits or blind man’s buff. Few have survived to the present day, all being sucked into the ubiquitous festive games of charades.

Today we celebrate the martyrdom of the Hieromartyr Lucian of Antioch. Saint Lucian was orphaned at the age of 12 and so he distributed all his possessions to the poor and sought guidance from the confessor Macarius in Edessa. Here he learnt the scriptures and the ascetic life. Having excelled in virtue and preached the gospel to the Jews and pagans, he was ordained a presbyter (priest). He opened a school in Antioch which taught the Holy Scriptures and how to live a virtuous life. He even corrected mistranslations and heretical additions to the Greek Septuagint. During the persecution of Diocletian, Saint Lucian was taken prisoner for 9 years where he encouraged his fellow prisoners not to give up the good fight. Just before his death, the holy presbyter wished to receive communion for the last time, and so, bound to a spiked bed in chains and shackles, he performed the Divine Liturgy in the prison, using his own chest as the Holy Altar. The day after when the soldiers went to see if the Saint was alive, he confessed three times, "I am a Christian" and then his soul departed to the Lord. The soldiers threw his body into the sea, however two dolphins miraculously brought it ashore where a pious Christian took the body and buried it. The Honourable Saint Helen built a church over where his relics were buried. May he intercede for us all + #saint #lucian #presbyter #antioch #antiochian #lebanon #martyr #hieromartyr #confessor #ascetic #asceticism #virtue #spirituallife #spiritual #septuagint #prayer #holy #venerable #helen #sainthelen #sthelen #dolphin #dolphins #miracle #miraculous #communion #holycommunion #martyr #martyrdom #orthodox #saintoftheday (at İzmit-Kocaeli) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjtO0XUL6wd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Notes on Africans in republican Rome, from Gruen's "Romans and Others":
Rome had a significant population of Black and African-descended people, across a wide array of professions. For any work set after ~250 BCE, there should definitely be Black people in Rome.
Most African Romans were probably originally slaves, either bought through the slave trade, or taken as prisoners of war.
Slavery was not specifically associated with African people, or with any particular ethnic group. The high rate of manumission in cities lead to many Africans holding Roman citizenship.
Roman beauty standards favored light skin, but otherwise the Romans seem to have considered skin color irrelevant.
Intermarriage was common, and busts survive of wealthy Romans with more African facial features, indicating a degree of social mobility.
The Romans did stereotype ethnic groups, but prejudice doesn't appear to have been harsher toward Africans than toward Gauls, Germans, Iberians or Greeks, and there are positive portrayals of Africans in the works of Plautus, Diodorus, Seneca the Younger, Lucian and Philostratus.
The most famous African Romans are Terence the playwright, the emperor Septimius Severus, and Saint Augustine.
Also, Gruen doesn't discuss this, but Roman Africa was actually one of the wealthiest provinces in the empire, had its own Romance language, and many people immigrated there for a better life!
(Erich Gruen, “Romans and Others,” in A Companion to the Roman Republic, ed. Nathan Rosenstein and Robert Morstein-Marx)
(Gruen does use some language that is now outdated or uncomfortable; I will forgive him on account of him being 89, and his overall conclusions are meant to correct racist ideas.)
