VIFF 2023 Review: It's Only Life After All
It’s Only Life After All is an intimate and personal look at the Indigo Girls and their long career of establishing themselves as musicians. Not just female musicians. Before I saw the documentary It’s Only Life After All, I wasn’t really a fan of the music of the Indigo Girls. If you like music, this is a documentary that will keep you intrigued. The film begins with Amy Ray and Emily Saliers,…

🧄🧹🔥🪻Summer closer views of Garden, during June. Can’t get many photos of it unless it’s not surrounded by other critters and/or less hot outside than most of the surrounding areas. Beyond that, very rarely able to get most of the photos due to the hot weather and the lack of time as well as the sunlight having to be in the background to towards the sides rather than hitting directly due to that there’s still time for all of them to grow and things, but the photos always have to turn out for the most part needed some editing some days in size, but not lighting. 🌻🌼🌿🐾
📼 Also, rarely have time to put them all together in a few hours for a video of the scene but between that and the other factors at play they’re all pretty much on the right track.

I just watched the documentary Indigo Girls: It's Only Life After All, and while I have known and loved Indigo Girls for as long as I can remember, this movie taught me new things about them, and my love for them has deepened as a result.
I've known for a while that the members (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) were in committed relationships with women, but I didn't know how exactly they labeled themselves, if they used labels at all. Emily Saliers said in the documentary that she's identified as queer for a few years now (I think she had previously identified as gay or lesbian) and feels very comfortable with that label. She said that she experiences physical attraction to men, but not necessarily emotional attraction.
Also, Amy Ray spoke very candidly about her gender. She did not explicitly say that she is trans or nonbinary, but she said she likely experienced dysphoria growing up, and as a child she sometimes wished she had been a boy. She said that collaborating and performing with butch musicians made her feel more comfortable exploring her gender, and while I don't remember how exactly she phrased it, she says that she feels like her gender is a mixture of masculine and feminine.
They got their start by performing in a gay bar; the manager of said gay bar ended up helping to produce their first album. They have been out since the early 1990s, and throughout the documentary they spoke of the barriers trans people are experiencing and expressed ardent support for LGBT+ youth. I love that they are so candid with their sexuality, and I love that they are advocates for the LGBT+ community as a whole.

Both Natalie Merchant and Melissa Etheridge were successful, but they didn't really fit the image of the 90's. The same can be said for Indigo Girls. True, they did follow the folk leanings, which were cherished at the time, yet they didn't surface them, they actually went really deep in the idiom, so one can be surprised to hear they sold a lot. Yes, these were the 90's, where many niches ended up becoming mainstream, but the duo does seem like an outlier in comparison to the prevailing mood of the 90's, which favoured the eclecticism up to a certain point Indigo Girls stepped over. While they haven't gone all Scott Walker on their listeners, they also didn't give us just the lighter versions of their idols for a quick buck.
