CLASSIC SACRED SALKANTAY Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 5 Days
Salkantay Trek crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4600m, descends into the cloud forest and passes through the archaeological place named Llactapata, with one of the wonderful views of Machu Picchu.
The trail starts in Mollepata/Markocasa or Soraypampa, a couple of hours away from Cusco and ends in Hidroelectrica giving access to town of Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu. The trek is not as popular as the overbooked Inca Trail but many people find this trek just as beautiful as the Inca trail.

Sabbatical Essay #Day 8: Commencing the Trail
We woke up super early and our Salkantay trail van picked us up from our hotel around (if I remember it correctly) 6-ish.  There were six of us.  There were us, a father and son, and a couple.  Everyone was American except for me.  The father looked familiar to someone I just could not remember who, and later my friend commented me similar thought, and he turned out to be Dermot Mulrony! How cool is that?
Our ride to our first stop, breakfast, was horrible.  Everyone was car sick and I think that was the only time I actually did feel sick in Peru.  We had a simple breakfast in a village and I remember when we walked in they had World Cup on and Korea was playing against Sweden.
Our group turned out to me, my friend Laura, Nathan and Lauren (the couple), and Dermot and Clyde (the father and son). O and our guide Hilton.
After our breakfast, we drove a little more to our beginning point where we finally begun our journey.  There was some easy walk and then we climbed a loupe towards a mountain to a lake and had to come back down for our first night of camping.  The climb did not “look” too hard but I was out of breath right away - first because I was out of shape and mostly because of high altitude.  Everyone seemed to be doing fine but I was just so so so so so so so so out of breath.  But everything looked so beautiful!  The sky! The mountain!  The condol!!!! OOOO and the lake!!!
Tumblr media
Photos can never really tell how beautiful nature really is.  When we came back down after a long day, our camp was set up and we had our dinner made by our chef and we had time to befriend each other and found out where everyone was from and all.
Tumblr media
it was all so lovely but I was so cold and was sort of regretting how much clothing i’ve brought.  (Even though I had bough an extra sweater on my first day in Peru)
First night was horrible.  It was so cold inside the tent, it made me question how I would survive the rest of the trekking.  I also could not fall asleep.  I am usually a very good sleeper but somehow I just could not sleep and just laid there in the tent... being cold... and occasionally forcing myself to the even colder situation outside because I had to use the restroom.  I go to restroom very frequently and that just does not help when living in a tent.
But as I went for the camp’s restroom which were just huts with broken toilets, the Peruvian sky was so beautiful it took my breath away and that night was the first time I saw milky way in my life.
Sleepless, I kept on laying in my tent after few trips to the restroom and I also listened to my audio book of “Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a TIme”.  It was a perfect book for the occasion.  The plot was all about this city dude from NYC doing a trekking trip to Machu Picchu.
Then during sometime at night- or morning.  Someone or two were throwing up from either altitude sickness or food.
It was a memorable night.

Sabbatical Essay #Day 7:
On our third day in Cusco, as we walked out from our hotel and into the city center we found ourselves walking next to a parade.
Tumblr media
I guess we were super lucky and stayed there during a very festive season!  (I looked up online and there are actually many many... events going on during month of June in Cusco)  There was a very very long parade with what looked like many many home made masks and figures and such.
Tumblr media
We weren’t really sure what these parades were representing but what a fun!  After enjoying the parade we did some more touristy shopping.  Where we went and bought a lot of vibrant Peruvian gifts and stuff and had fun bargaining.  I bought a super Peruvian looking duffle bag where I ended up stuffing my non-essential things and sent it to LA with my friend before I left for Alaska later that month.  Also bought some colorful scarves for my mom and my mother in law.
Tumblr media
Of course we also went to see this famous wall.  This is one of the best attraction is Cusco!  Super sturdy Inca walls that no one knows how to replicate!  Then we went back to our favorite Peruvian restaurant ever!!! -->  Morena Peruvian Kitchen for our last dinner before our big schedule which started super early next morning.
Tumblr media
This is lovely chocolate dessert we had.  After the dinner we went back to our hotel to pack and tried to go to bed early.  It was our last night in actual bed before our Salkantay trail which made me feel like I needed to save much energy as I possibly can.  However, we did not go to bed that early but watched crazy TV show called “Naked and Afraid” and some other ghost hunting show.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu
Thinking about Trekking to Machu Picchu?. The first thing that came to mind was probably to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Because of excessive crowds the Peruvian government decided not only to limit daily access but also to impose strict Inca Trail Regulations. We understand how frustrating it is to not be able to get a permit because you didn't book 4 months in advance and there are no permits left.
The famous Salkantay Trek (or Salcantay Trek), named among the 25 best Treks in the World, by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine, is a trek open to everybody, with no limitation on spaces or permits (at least for now). Connecting the city of Mollepata, Cusco with Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek is an ancient and remote footpath located in the same region as the Inca Trail where massive snowcapped mountains collide with lush tropical rain forests.
Located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cusco in south central Peru by the Cordillera Vilcabamba and rising to 6271 meters above sea level (20574 ft) Mt. Salkantay is an outstanding glacier-capped summit worshipped for thousands of years by local indians. The name Salkantay is a quechua word meaning "Savage Mountain".
Our Classic Salkantay Trek is a custom-designed alternative to the traditional Inca Trail. Off the beaten path, this is a cutting edge experience for adventure travelers looking for a little more privacy and authenticity. With more spectacular vistas, the Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek offers the solitude and quiet contemplation such a sacred path deserves.
