Verner Panton designed the S Chair in 1956 which became the Panton Chair manufactured by Vitra. It was the first plastic stackable chair designed for serial production sold by Herman Miller Furniture Company. The originals were made with polyurethane structural foam, but I have a fake set made of fiber glass painted in white polyurethane. Plastic was considered high tech at the time, but I have them on a Saltillo Mexican tile which makes for a hard contrast. I have an affinity for saltillo tile and Spanish architecture. Growing up in San Antonio, I've been surrounded by Mexican culture my whole life and I love it. Joanna Gaines Reveals One Thing That Doesn’t Fit in a Farmhouse One Bit

“Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines are famous for their farmhouse style—but on Joanna’s “Behind the Design” spinoff show, she doubles down by turning a barn into a house.

In the “Brooks House” episode, we learn that U.S. military veteran TJ Brooks lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan. He and his girlfriend, Stephanie, have moved to Waco, TX, to settle down. They have only $40,000 to make the barn on the property they bought into a beautiful home.

That isn’t much, but lo and behold, the community rallies around them—donating products, time, and tens of thousands of dollars to turn the rustic building into a domestic dream.

As they put this project together, Joanna and her helpers pass along some smart tips on how to achieve a farmhouse feel, including one thing that doesn’t fit within a farmhouse one bit. Curious? Answers ahead.

Farmhouse + modern = modern farmhouse!

When Joanna interviews the couple, she finds that he likes farmhouse style and she likes modern style. “Modern farmhouse” is the marriage of both these styles, and it’s Joanna’s signature aesthetic.

“This is the perfect design style for a home that sits on a large piece of land in the country,” she says, noting that she will use “white shiplap, clean black accents, warm wood tones, concrete countertops, and stainless-steel fixtures.”

Create a kitchen nook

In the same space where most designers would put a simple upper cabinet, Joanna has created an entire kitchen nook, with shelves, a vertical plate rack, and small drawers for recipes and cooking tools. It’s so much more interesting!

Ideally, everyone likes to look out at some kind of view while washing dishes or preparing food at the sink. Unfortunately, that’s not an option in every kitchen design. In this house, the sink faces a wall, so Joanna hangs a multipaned mirror over the sink. Not only does it reflect light and make the room appear bigger, but it also gives whoever is using the sink something interesting to look at (either their own cute mug or what’s going on in the room behind them).

Don’t overdo overhead

Laura, Joanna’s assistant, suggests using beadboard on the ceiling to give the great room a little more interest, but Joanna decides against it.

“I want to keep the attention here,” she says, gesturing toward the space in front of her face. “Keep the attention and those really cool features at eye level, so we don’t go too much over.”

Clean lines are very important to her in this project.

One feature that just doesn’t fit with modern farmhouse

Stephanie tells Joanna she really loves terra-cotta tiles from the Mexican city of Saltillo, but Joanna tells her they don’t jibe with the modern farmhouse elements she has in mind. But they do have a place: the guest bathroom. That has traditionally been the one area where homeowners can experiment with adventurous design that may not match the rest of their house.

Right-size the porch

TJ wants a screened-in porch, which is a throwback to his childhood. But right now, the porch isn’t just open; it also runs along the entire side of the house. That’s overkill, says Joanna, adding that she doesn’t want the porch to be “bigger than the entire house.”

Her solution? She encloses half of the open porch to make a dining room, and has Chip build a deck on the other half. She then screens that part in and fills the space with outdoor furniture, and even games like cornhole for the kids (and grown-ups).

Make a statement that’s not too loud

The palette for the project is black and white, with plants added for color. So when Joanna commissions a large painting of the American flag to make a statement on a plain white wall, it might seem that all that red, white, and blue might be a little too much. But savvy Joanna would never fall into that trap. The flag’s stars and stripes are rendered in black, white, and gray. It fits right in.

“A statement piece should not overwhelm the rest of the space,” she advises.

But decor aside, probably the best part of this episode is when TJ gets down on one knee on their new front porch and proposes to Stephanie.

This is why we all love “Fixer Upper” and “Behind the Design” so much: There’s plenty of humor and great design ideas, but in the end, it’s all heart.
