upcoming store stuff & why we're doing a super sale
omg hiiii it's devin again, and this time i'm bringing store news
the short version: we're moving ourselves back to minnesota, and we're moving order fulfillment to a fulfillment center
wow, that's big news! maya and i are so so so excited to be closer to our minnesota friends (and also my family lol). i'm hoping to be back in northeast minneapolis, but let's be real we're probably gonna get priced out and into the suburbs
in addition to that, due to a variety of reasons i'll explain in more detail below, we're transitioning from in-house fulfillment to working with a fulfillment center (or 3pl, short for third-party logistics). we're at an awkward size that makes staffing difficult and have had issues with extended processing time. the 3pl should be set up by september, and we're working on the back end to have fulfillment centers in australia, canada, the UK, and eventually the EU. if tax authorities work with us we should have all that ready by december 2024!
to prepare for that we're doing a super sale. ash told me not to call it liquidation but she said that like 30 seconds after i hit send on the marketing email, sorry about that. items that we don't want to pay to move to the 3pl are discounted by 25-70%, with some of them priced at cost. under no circumstances will anything ever be 70% off again
if you're nosy you can read the q&a i made up in my head while eating pigs in a blanket:
how are the labor protections at the 3pl?
pretty good! we were shocked to find anything even halfway decent in the US; we went looking for a fulfillment center in the EU to handle all international fulfillment, and the one we found just so happened to have bought a US location two years ago.
they're located in ohio, pay $19/hr, and provide health insurance and 401k matching. that seemed too good to be true so we dug through employee reviews on places like glassdoor, and while there were some bad reviews those were all dated prior to when the facility was purchased by this new company. they also have a very low turnover rate which is a HUGE green flag
why are you transferring to a 3pl?
the serious
sometimes we have a high volume of sales, and it makes sense to have two full-time employees plus a part timer! but usually we have a low-to-medium volume of sales. we can float by on that, but it gets risky, and the economy is in a bad enough state that we're concerned about the longevity
related, the 2023 holiday sale showed us some major flaws in our fulfillment process. if the same issues were to happen this year the business probably wouldn't survive
we're moving cross-country in early 2025 and would've had to close this location anyway
the dumb:
i'm sick of dealing with commercial landlords and if i have one more wall leak i'm going to throw it into the river brick by brick
what about your staff?
unfortunately we will have to say goodbye to our office staff. they have been given 3.5 months notice and no-questions-asked PTO for interviews with a small severance
why are you moving back to minnesota?
troy was always meant to be a temporary move. initially the plan was to move to vermont or massachusetts, but after being out here for 7 years we just kinda want to go home. the weather in troy is perfect for us, we love the mountains, and we have some great friends here, but for some goddamn reason we want our eyelashes to freeze together.
will you be returning to midwest cons?
if we return to cons at all it will be with ariel and/or ash running the booth, maya will not be involved. this would likely be in california and/or in the northeast US.
my friends are begging me to go to CONvergence as an attendee so ig you might see me there? maya has pledged death before crowded venues tho
will you do any local events in minnesota?
we might do sample sales. honestly idk what we're gonna do with the samples we have in troy, most of them are terrible. do you want samples of the strangest low rise bell bottom pants ever created? please take them from me. my bush hangs out
also my kid brother has gotten really into library events and if he asks nice enough we might do some of those
is there anything else?
i mean probably, but i started this last week and i haven't had any other ideas on what to include

first vacation together || suh johnny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bf!johnny x reader
wc: 1330
cw: slightly suggestive
an: this was originally written with [redacted] member in mind but i skimmed through and made some quick edits, so apologies if i missed something.
Today was finally the day! You gathered all of your bags and made your way out the apartment door after getting a text from your boyfriend Johnny. This would be the first time you see each other in a month. Not only would you two be seeing each other, but you were going on vacation together for the first time.
Johnny had been extremely busy preparing for 127's comeback. It made him sad that he wasn't able to see you much so he decided to plan a week long getaway for the two of you. You offered to help him plan but he denied it so this whole trip would be a surprise to you. You walked out the front door and was greeted by the 6-foot tall man you called your boyfriend.
“My Love!! I've missed you so much,” he said pulling you into a big hug and kissing your forehead. “Hi baby! I missed you too,” you said grinning wide like a child. Once settled in the car you couldn't help but bombard Johnny with questions about where you were going. He giggled at you enthusiasm “You'll find out as soon as we get there.” You both arrived at the train station and boarded the train. You were so excited about the trip you couldn't keep still, bouncing in your seat. Johnny couldn't help but smile at his adorable partner.
4 hours later you arrived at the destination. Stepping off the train you breathed in the salty air of the seaside city of Busan. You were beyond excited, this was your first time outside of Seoul since moving to Korea. What made it even better was that you'd get to experience it with the love of you life. “Soo... what do you think?” Johnny asked nervously. “I love it! You remembered, I've always wanted to come here.” You smiled up at him and grabbed onto his hand. The two of you left the station hand in hand, walking through the city to your hotel.
At the hotel, Johnny opened the door to your room. You gasped at its large size then immediately ran over to the window to admire the view of the city below. Your room was on the top floor of the hotel which made it perfect to look over top of the buildings. It was starting to get darker outside and the lights on the buildings began to sparkle. Walking over to you and placing his arm around your waist, he turns you to face the bed. “Did you see the size of the bed?” he said with a smirk on his face, implying some naughty activities you two would be getting into later. “Johnnyyy”, you said whining and playfully smacking his arm. He let out a little chuckle. “Come on now, let's go before we're late for our dinner reservation.”
Once at the restaurant, the front desk host leads you through the restaurant to your table right on the water. It was perfect, just like a scene in a movie. Johnny was somehow able to reserve the entire patio juts for the two of you. The table was lit by candlelight and all that could be heard was the sound of crashing waves. Johnny held your hand from across the table, admiring your beauty in the candlelight and you both sat in silence, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. The food was amazing, as expected, and you shared a little cake for dessert. After dinner you two decided to walk around the city a bit and stumbled across a street market. You thought it would be the perfect place to find souvenirs for yourself and friends back in Seoul. Johnny walked past a small jewelry stall and saw a matching ring set that caught his eye. It was perfect, just your style. He thought it would be the perfect gift to remember this trip so he bought it, becoming giddy at the thought of how much you'll love it. You both continued to walk through the market, looking at the trinkets in all of the stalls and trying food sample. After buying a few souvenirs you made your way back to the hotel with arms linked together.
Suddenly Johnny pulls you aside to sit on a nearby bench and gives you a quick kiss on the cheek. He looks a bit nervous after pulling away and you take notice. “What's wrong baby, is everything okay?” He forms a light smile not wanting to worry you any further, “You know I love you so much. I just want to make this trip special. I feel so bad about not being able to spend time with you. My job takes up so much of my time, I don't want you to think I'm ignoring you. I just want this to be perfect.” You gently place your hand on top of his for reassurance. “It's okay baby. I understand that your job is very time consuming but you love what you do. That's one of my favorites things about you, you're so passionate. Just know I will always be there waiting for you and cheering you on,” you said placing a kiss on his cheek. Johnny smiled at your words and started to pull out a small box from his pocket. “I have something for you,” he said placing the ring on your finger. Tears began to form in your eyes at how sweet he was. “Thank you so much. I love it!” you said giving him a quick kiss. “It's starting to get cold, let’s hurry and head back,” he said drawing his jacket over your shoulders. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder and you rested your head on his arm, walking back to the hotel in silence, just enjoying the moment.
Over the next few days you enjoyed all of the attractions Busan had to offer. You guys went to the beach, explored the city, visited local temples, and rode in the sky canals. You were having such a fun time you didn't want it to end. On the last day of your trip Johnny wakes up and stretches his arms above his head and looks down to smile at your sleeping figure next to him. He gently gets out of bed trying not to wake you and steps over to the window to open the curtains. To his surprise it was dark and gloomy outside and rain started to drizzle. Visibly upset he thought “it wasn't supposed to rain at all this week. This was supposed to be their perfect vacation. I hope they're not to upset.” Lost in thought, he was startled by your voice. “Good Morning baby! What's wrong.” “It's raining today. Our plans are ruined.” He said sitting down on the edge of the bed and placing his head in his hands. “Let's just have a lazy day!” you said, “We can just lay in bed, cuddle, watch movies, and order room service.” Happy to see that you weren't upset, he tackles you down on the bed and covers you in kisses. ”Let's do it!” You both crawl back in bed and snuggle into each other. While you pick something to watch on Netflix, Johnny is busy ordering breakfast to be delivered to your room. For the next few hours you two would be comfortable in each others embrace.
”Hey look baby, the rain stopped. Did you want to go out?” You were enjoying the quiet time you were spending with Johnny. It had been so long since the two of you got to relax like this. You didn't want it to end. “Can we just stay like this?” you spoke softly. “Of course we can princess.” He said placing a kiss on your forehead. You wrapped your arms around Johnny’s bare torso and snuggled closer to him.
”Thank you for the vacation baby. I had a really good time. I love you.” you said smiling before slowly drifting off to sleep.

2024: A Perfume Odyssey
Tumblr media
For anyone who might possibly be reading this, it's not entirely accurate of me to say that my fragrance journey began in 2024. It really began the previous year through a combination of curiosity and boredom, and had its origins in my last trip to France, which was in 2017.
I went with 2024 because in March I took my first trip abroad since France, this time to Italy, and I was positively inundated with fragrance during the two weeks I spent there. Milan was the city of oud and other opulent odors, while Venice, Florence and Rome strayed more into floral and fruity territory, but all throughout I was delighted by the world of scents (and flavors) I had so newly (re)discovered.
After returning home, I flipped through my "library" of fragrances and found something lacking. For me, trying out a scent is like selecting an accessory to go with an outfit, or being briefly transported to a different dimension accessed by sense memory. I'd acquired a few of each over the years--notably Frédéric Malle Outrageous in travel size and Tokyomilk Everything & Nothing in full size--but most of the samples I'd ordered through the mail fell short of what I wanted them to be.
Full disclosure: my initial buying choices last year may have been influenced by an ASMRtist on YouTube and a movie star with a mission to create "clean" unisex fragrances. The results were entertaining if not as satisfying as I'd hoped. English-born Penhaligon's yielded some fun origin stories like Hammam Bouquet (Oscar Wilde's fragrance of choice apparently) and Blenheim Bouquet (Winston Churchill's), but few felt like something I would actually want to wear more than once or twice. I'm not drawn to most stronger scents like vanilla or patchouli, and I tend to be selective with florals or anything that smells like it came out of a magazine ad.
In Italy I smelled many things, including Véronique Gabai and Goutal Paris and Diptyche and Santa Maria Novella (referenced in the latest Ripley series on Netflix), but the only fragrance I brought home was VG Sexy Garrigue, which to me smells like being gently submerged in a honey bath on a sunlit afternoon. It carries just a whisper of oud, reminding me of the city where I found it, Milan, without feeling drowned by it. A transportive scent par excellence that also serves perfectly well as an accessory.
In contrast, there's D.S. & Durga. I'd become aware of this niche New York-based boutique fragrance power couple after being gifted a Spirit Lamp-scented candle a few years ago, but it wasn't until I'd returned from Italy that I finally took the plunge and ordered some samples from them.
I started with a four-pack comprised of I Don't Know What, Cowboy Grass, Sweet Do Nothing, and Amber Kiso. Based on the many reviews I'd read, these were some of the OGs mixed with more recent additions, but nothing prepared me for what I would experience upon spraying each for the first time.
(On second thought, I wouldn't say I was entirely unprepared. I'd been inhaling Spirit Lamp for a while after all--a delicious milky-sweet delicacy with underlying hints of metal and musk--and it has been designated the "sex candle" in our household 🤭).
I Don't Know What (a literal English translation of je ne sais quoi) is more or less as described: a woodsy framework meant to be layered and built upon, or otherwise lending a subtle glow to one's natural body scent. I found that it layered well with one of the fragrances I'd sampled last year, and I will likely add them both to my wishlist.
Cowboy Grass was a surprise. Not as transportive as I'd been led to believe (whoever is behind the marketing team at DS&D is a genius), but it grew on me as it revealed notes both leathery and sweet, like a warm breeze wafting through an open-air market in the desert. OK, so maybe that last sentence reveals it to be more transportive than my initial impression made it out to be. It doesn't evoke either cowboys or grass in my mind, but I could picture someone like Curt Wild wearing it, which makes it even more appealing to me.
Amber Kiso, on the other hand, was deeply transportive. I tried it for the first time right before settling into a long meditation session and felt like I'd been whisked away to a holy forest, or possibly a monastery in the Himalayas. A bit too strong in the amber department to wear regularly, but I will be bringing it out whenever I want to experience it just for myself and be transported again.
Sweet Do Nothing was as advertised, heavy on the orange blossom and evoking a casual summery spirit. There are certain true floral scents that I will tolerate, orange blossom and rose among them, and I will likely continue to spritz this one on through the summer without feeling a need to buy more.
In summary, D.S. & Durga is the most varied adventure in fragrancy I've had yet, and it's going to be a struggle to prevent myself from ordering yet more samples from them this year. 😩 Which brings me to my final confession: I caved in to a promotional deal with FragranceNet.com this week.
It wasn't entirely out of the blue because I'd been longing after a couple of Goutal Paris fragrances sampled in Italy, and I was thrilled to find a travel-sized Eau d'Hadrien for a very affordable price. I justified the rest of my purchases as either birthday gifts (Tea Rose for the mom and Burberry for the fiancé) or low-stakes forays into other realms of scent I hadn't experienced before.
I think I've amassed enough of a collection at this point to satisfy this particular itch for the rest of the season at least--Eau d'Hadrien especially was made for the heat of summer, with its ginger-sharp edges and sweet heart that could fit the likes of Arthur Stuart--but I don't believe it's the last time I will be waxing lyrical about olfactory matters, nor do I want it to be. 💋

Chapter 3
The line only rings once before he answers in a rush
“Mulder”
“Mulder, it’s me.”
“You’re back.” He states. She can hear rustling around on his end of the line.
“I am. How are you?” She makes herself comfortable on her couch preparing to begin her lengthy questionnaire about his health. She wonders what types of questions she could sneak into the middle and trick him into answering. Have you felt any lightheadedness? Have you had a normal appetite? When was the last time you were sexually active?
More rustling and the creaking of a door. “Mulder, what on earth are you doing?”
“Scully, did you stop by my building earlier?” He asks, the sound in the background goes silent.
Shit. She doesn’t ever lie to him.
“I thought about stopping by on my way home from the airport but I am exhausted.” She says, scrunching up her face, hoping he lets it drop. It’s not technically an outright lie.
A moment of silence passes and the sounds begin again. A thump followed by another thump. Sounds muffled and then sharp again.
“To answer your question, I am going out.” He says muffled. She imagines he is holding the phone against his shoulder.
Scully sits up straight “Mulder, you are two weeks out of brain surgery. You shouldn’t be out. You shouldn’t even be alone. Where are you going?”
“Well I have been alone for 5 days now and before that, you haven’t spent more than 10 minutes in my presence so I am performing a little experiment. I figured you would like this. It’s scientific. A sample size of one. Your favorite.”
She feels guilt squeeze at her chest. She should have never taken that request for a consult in Chicago.
He senses her reaction. “Relax, Doc. I am only walking to the market two blocks away. I’ll make it home. I promise. And before you start wondering if you should have stayed in DC, don’t. A field office in a city like Chicago would only request you if they are stumped. They aren't short of forensic talent. People are just starting to recognize that you are the best at what you do.”
She doesn’t know how to respond to this unexpected compliment. It’s not that she is insecure about her skills as a forensic pathologist or that she is valued by Mulder for the same. She hasn’t worried about that in a while. She’s just never heard him express it so bluntly. She relaxes into the couch.
“Ok, I’ll bite.” What is this experiment with a sample size of one?”
“I am hoping that I can persuade you to stay in my presence for more than the time it takes to check a wound and run. I haven’t been able to sense anything from my neighbors for a couple of days. Before you left my barometer was you and my ability was waning then. I figure there will be a few people at Trader Joe’s. I want to see if I can sense anything. ”
She feels a wave of embarrassment at her inability to control her thoughts around him. “Isn’t that the new place that is always packed? Mulder, you don’t have to do that. I can come over.”
“I’ll turn around if it starts to hurt my head or I feel overwhelmed. Plus I need something to eat that isn’t freezer burnt. I am suddenly craving what you call ‘real food’ I thought you would be pleased. Anyway, I have to hang up if I want to leave my apartment.”
“Take your cell!” She nearly shouts.
He chuckles in the low way he does when they talk on the phone late at night. The way she secretly hopes no one but she ever hears. “I never leave my apartment without my cell.” He says and hangs up.
_____________
He is just leaving the elevator when his cell phone rings. He smiles despite himself. If pressed he would admit to feeling slightly abandoned this past week. He understands her reasons for being uncomfortable around him. It just so happens that they are the same reasons he suddenly feels like being in her presence is the best possible situation for him. She emanates unconditional love and he finds it addictive and unimaginably comforting. Her more romantically inclined emotions toward him aren’t bad either.
“I just talked to you.” He teases.
“I know. I know… just humor me.”
He passes a fellow tenant on their way to the elevator.
“Did you hear that?” He says.
“Hear what?”
“Exactly,” He says like he is leading her along explaining one of his theories. “I just passed that accountant who lives on the second floor but never uses the stairs. Didn’t get anything off him. Of course, he might just be a robot.”
“Mulder… I wouldn’t be able to… Nothing? Not even a feeling?” She feels hopeful
“Not a thing yet.” He is walking along Wythe St. which is moderately travelled with a few restaurants and shops. He hasn’t walked closely to anyone yet. “Hey, Scully. I am going to call you back. I need to interact with someone and it’s rude to be on a cell phone at a cash register.”
“Do you think that interacting with a cashier will be enough to tell?”
“Have you ever shopped at Trader Joe’s? I’ll be lucky if I get out of there without knowing the person’s life story. Telepathy or not. I’ll call you back.”
He closes his phone and turns into the store. This store is weird, he thinks. He’ll probably end up with frozen food despite what he just told Scully. He sets out to grab a few things he needs and a couple of things he knows she would like. He genuinely hopes she will have some reason to spend a bit more time at his place soon. He buys a bag of popcorn, some coffee, and milk. He grabs some mixed nuts after some deliberation. Why would a store this small have this many options for nuts and trail mix? Should he buy eggs and toast? He doesn’t typically eat a big breakfast but he knows she makes the time to eat in the mornings.
That thought pulls him into reality. Is he thinking about making her breakfast? Where in the hell had that come from? He needs to be careful. Knowledge of how she feels about him suddenly showed up in his mind a couple of weeks ago but he is living in a very different reality than she is. She doesn’t seem like the ‘move fast and break things’ type of person when it comes to romance. Not that they have ever talked about that sort of thing. If they did they might tempt fate. What the fuck is wrong with them?
He suddenly realizes he has been standing still holding a carton of eggs for much too long. He quickly puts the eggs back. Grabs a couple of premade salads, whole wheat cereal, and some microwave foods that contain veggies and makes his way to the register. He will stick with offering her popcorn, hopefully during a movie.
Now that his task is over and he has stopped dwelling on Scully, he realizes his only thoughts since leaving Hegal place have been his own.
___________
It feels like hours have gone by when Mulder finally calls her back. She has paced the apartment, boiled water for tea, forgotten to pour the cup of tea, flipped through the channels on her TV, and stared at the phone.
She tries to not answer too quickly.
“You should come over.” He says. That tone again. She gets a flippy feeling in her stomach. Has he always talked like that on the phone?
“Is everything OK?” She quickly asks.
“Couldn’t sense a thing. The kid that rang me up is going to Georgetown. He has to work because his scholarship only covers his classes, not his living expenses…”
“Mulder…”
“I laid down for a few minutes when I got back or I would have called you sooner.”
“Are you fatigued? Do you feel like you might have a fever? Are you in any pain?” She asks, unable to keep the concern out of her voice.
“I have been injured several times since I met you, Scully, and I haven’t died yet.” He says, irritation just slightly evident in his voice.
“You’ve never had your brain cut into.” She says. And then left for dead she thinks. “I’m coming over.”

CatsCast is looking for speculative cat stories! We don’t need your postal address and phone number, though, so feel free to leave those off (but please do include your email address). We like Times New Roman font and italics instead of underlines, but we’re really just saying that for the benefit of writers who agonize over this sort of thing. Any reasonable font is fine, and if you want to use underlines instead of italics, that’s fine too. We prefer short cover letters — please include your name, the story’s title and word count, and whether your story is an original or a reprint. How Your Backpacking Meals Are Really Made
Tumblr media
By Emily Pennington (excerpted from the July 14, 2024 article in Backpacker)
A faint whiff of cumin and cracked black pepper serenades my nostrils, reminiscent of the Indian spice markets I once visited in my mid-twenties. Only, I’m not in South Asia, or even the back storeroom of a hip Thai restaurant; I’m in my hometown of Boulder, Colorado, touring the massive factory where Backpacker’s Pantry meals are made.
My host for the morning is Soraya Smith, the company’s president and recipe-development chef. Smith, who had always been involved on the recipe side of American Outdoor Products (the parent organization of Backpacker’s Pantry) took over as president after her husband, Rodney, died in a tragic ski accident in 2020. She’s been the face of the family-owned corporation ever since.
“I’m from a foodie family,” explained Smith. “My mom is Spanish-Italian, and my father is from Iran, so we’re very multicultural. I also went to Culinary School of the Rockies before stepping into this role.”

Our first stop was the test kitchen, where Smith pulled different dry ingredients together to experiment with new recipe ideas. To be totally honest, the various plastic bags she grabbed out of a large bin looked more like the Parmesan cheese packets you’d get for free with your pizza delivery than high-quality foodstuffs. But therein contained the secrets to my favorite post-hike meals: proprietary flavorings and mixes, which Backpacker’s Pantry makes with freeze-dried ingredients.
As we entered the factory’s enormous storeroom, I asked Smith for a refresher: What exactly is freeze drying?
Freeze-drying technology was used extensively by NASA during the space boom of the 1960s. Since freeze-dried food retains more than 90 percent of its original nutrients, it’s the best way to keep astronauts stocked with nutritious food. Better yet, the food can last for years without going bad.
When an ingredient is freeze-dried, it’s brought to an inhospitable -60°F, then back above freezing multiple times while inside a vacuum chamber. That way, only the ingredient’s water content is removed. “Some companies make a large sheet of, say, lasagna, cook it, and then dehydrate it,” Smith said. “We, on the other hand, mix each of our freeze-dried ingredients into the bag, so that when you add that boiling water, most of them are getting cooked for the first time. It’s fresher, and I think it has a better texture.”
Tumblr media
Once workers grab individual ingredients from the palettes in the store room, they go to the dedicated mixing room, where seasonings and starches are stirred together in large tubs. The room looks like a sterile, high-tech scene out of Willy Wonka.
Here, Smith points out that the brand adheres to a strict allergen separation system. For instance, a recipe with gluten won’t get run through the machines on the same day as a gluten-free recipe to protect customers with gluten intolerances. Ditto for dairy products. (Workers clean the machines thoroughly at the end of each day by passing them through a chrome-covered, bedroom-sized industrial dishwasher.)
After mixing, the meals are mechanically portioned out by category—sauce, starch, meat, and vegetable—then sealed by hand. Workers sample the meals throughout the day, preparing a baggie to taste-test at the beginning, middle, and end of each run. The goal is to ensure the flavors remain consistent throughout. Forks and counter space are set aside in the test kitchen for this specific purpose. If something doesn’t taste right, they ditch the batch and correct it.
The Backpacker’s Pantry factory produces thousands of meals each day. Once the day’s meals get sealed, boxed, and quality checked, they head into a gigantic storeroom, which then ships the products to big retailers, like REI, as well as directly to consumers.
As I closed the huge warehouse doors behind me and concluded my tour, I was surprised to feel tremendously better about all that just-add-water food I’d been eating. The ingredients were both fresher than I’d imagined and more rigorously quality-checked. Ninety percent of their original nutrients, huh? Heck, maybe I’ll toss a couple under my desk to eat in the office.

December prompts - day 18 (christmas market)
“I can’t believe my husband has never been to a Christmas market!”
“David, you’ve been to my hometown. Is it really that surprising that we didn’t have a local Christmas market? It’s not much different than here, and Schitt’s Creek certainly doesn’t have one.”
“But we’re going to do what we can to approximate one until we can find someone we can trust with the apothecary while we take a vacation.”
“Next year, hopefully,” Patrick sighs, leaning his head on David’s shoulder.
“It’s truly magical, honey, I can’t wait for you to experience it.
***
After weeks of phone calls, emails, and vendor meetings, Rose Apothecary and the town of Schitt’s Creek are prepared for their version of a Christmas market. It’s small, and the variety of food is nothing like what would be found in a big city, but David is proud. For a town the size of Schitt’s Creek, this is an impressive undertaking.
He has left Patrick out of the planning, because he wants his husband to experience it fresh, without dealing with all of the preparation. The awe in Patrick’s eyes as he walks up and down the street, chatting with vendors he knows well and sampling some old favorites and some new treats created just for the market is enough to make it worth all of David’s efforts.
It’s far from the Christmas Markets David had visited around the world in his past life, but still, it’s beautiful. And he organized the entire thing using his existing base of local vendors who really pulled through with some amazing goods for the event.
He can’t wait to take Patrick to a real Christmas market. Next year (hopefully). But for now, this is more than enough.

The Pitch Deck for Influencer Marketing Agencies
Tumblr media
How Influencer Marketing Agencies Can Pitch Influencer Marketing Successfully
PR is no longer just about media relations. The bounds of “earned media” now extends beyond reporters into the social media realm, and beyond.
In fact, many companies are looking to increase brand awareness, engage consumers, and drive sales through influencer marketing! According to a recent survey, 51% of marketers say that they spend between $50-$500K per year on influencer marketing, and 15% reported then spend $1M+.
Budgets are by no means small! There’s so much potential in influencer marketing for agencies that want to provide impact to new clients or expand existing accounts. Below, we offer six tips for creating an irresistible influencer marketing program pitch (you can also get a template deck here).
1. Set the scene with data.
Similar to how you compose a pitch to a reporter, it’s important for influencer marketing agencies to start by giving your client context. Why invest in influencer marketing now? What’s the potential impact? Why is it relevant to them?
It’s even better if you can answer these questions with data. Try finding stats that frame influencer marketing as a no-brainer strategy. For example, 70% of consumers are more likely to buy a product from a brand if they collaborate with an influencer they know and trust. Or, 54% of marketers strongly agree that influencer marketing has successfully increased brand awareness. The goal here is to show them what they're missing out on!
2. Map the influencer marketing program to their business goals.
There are different tactics (and influencer types) that will help drive brand awareness versus conversions, and so on.
When building your deck, start by reiterating your client’s goals to them and then show them how your tailored plan — from influencers, to trends, to metrics — will help them reach those goals.
If you don’t already know the client’s goals, then make sure you ask them ahead of your presentation. Do they want to earn more brand awareness or drive sales? Are they interested in reaching new audiences or strengthening loyalty amongst an engaged community? Do they have a specific brand mission or values (e.g. diversity and inclusion, sustainability, body positivity) that they want to promote?
3. Come with a tailored list of influencers.
The basis of a good influencer marketing program are good partners. As such, it will be important to provide a sample list of potential influencer partners in your deck. This is your chance to prove that you are advisors who know how to be strategic and data oriented!
When finding influencers for this sample list, provide basic metrics about them (follower size, engagement rate, video view rate, etc) but also be prepared to explain why you believe they are a perfect fit for your client.
Pro tip: If you already have access to Traackr, try using this special technique for finding high performing influencers.
4. Highlight a few relevant platforms, content types, and influencer trends.
Take your pitch a step further by highlighting your research and expertise in the industry. Pull a few content and platform trends that you think your client could utilize in their influencer marketing program. For example, beauty brands that are looking for interesting and engaging video content might want to know about the beauty influencer ASMR trend. Or fragrance brands that are having a hard time representing their products on social media might be interested to learn about influencers who create scent inspired mood boards (example of this in our most recent State of Influence report).
If you feel that you have enough information about your client’s goals and messaging, you could even mock up a few possible campaigns with influencer rosters, themes, and metrics!
5. Show how you will provide transparent measurements of success.
58% of marketers say that measuring the return on investment (ROI) is the biggest challenge when producing successful influencer marketing programs. As your client’s trusted advisor, you have the opportunity to help them be one of the few who know exactly what impact their influencer marketing programs have.
In your deck, lay out a plan for regularly and transparently reporting on program and campaign performance. Some of the best metrics that are important report on include:
Performance metrics
Number of activated influencers
Number of posts
Reach
Impressions
Number of views
Number of engagements
Engagement rate
Spend efficiency
Cost per Post
Cost per Thousand Impressions
Cost per View
Cost per Engagement
Cost per Click
Fun fact, if you have access to Traackr you can save time by exporting all of these campaign metrics directly from the platform into powerpoint slides.
‍Tip: Trying to explain the value of influencer marketing to your executive team? Here are some tips from an expert who’s been in the industry for over a decade.
6. Show a few influencer marketing success stories to seal the deal.
If your influencer marketing agency has examples of previous campaigns and programs that you’ve run for other clients, great! If you don’t have any case studies of your own, here are a few that might be helpful:
How Colgate-Palmolive and its agency partners cut down influencer campaign costs by 40%.
How Beekman 1802 built awareness and drove sales with TikTok influencers.
How BFGoodrich reached newer, younger audiences with sports influencers.
If those case studies aren’t relevant to your client’s industry, put your googling skills to the test and find a few influencer marketing campaigns that have made the news! Here are a few brands from various industries that have become known for great influencer marketing over the years:
e.l.f. Cosmetics
Rare Beauty
Fenty Beauty
Shiseido
Dove
Maybelline
Charlotte Tilbury
Nike
Sam Edelman
American Eagle
Revolve
Hoka
Gymshark
Moncler
Absout
Chipotle
Bumble
Meliá Hotels
Audible
Otherwise, you could browse past winners from specific influencer marketing awards like the Shorty Awards, the influencer sections of Digiday’s Content Marketing Awards, the Webby Awards, and more.

5 Famous Foods to Try in Kyoto
Traditional culinary culture has flourished in Kyoto, and you may get a taste of history with Japanese course meals prepared as part of a traditional tea ceremony and vegetarian cuisine influenced by Chinese Buddhism.
The town's local cuisine (Kyo-ryori) is colorful and visually appealing, thanks to the expertise of Japanese chefs. Everyone should have the opportunity to sample traditional Japanese cuisine in the stately setting of Kyoto at least once in their lives. Of course, fantastic food at reasonable costs is available.
We've compiled a list of some of the top local cuisines and budget-friendly treats that Kyoto residents enjoy daily.
Yudof (Boiled tofu):
Perhaps no food represents Kyoto more than you. It contains only tofu, water, kelp, and a dipping sauce. The kelp is put in the bottom of a stewpot, filled with tofu and water, and simmered. Tofu is scooped up and served with a dipping sauce, typically a ponzu soy sauce-based vinaigrette.
Hamo (Conger eel)
The spikey-toothed hamo (conger eel) is a difficult adversary to deal with. Small bones span the length of its slim body. Chefs make half-cuts into the filleted meat to make it tasty - 24 cuts within each three-centimeter span. Hamo can be boiled, grilled, deeply fried, and even used in shabu-shabu or nabe stew. Cold, boiled ham served with a tart ume (plum) sauce is especially popular in the summer.
Tsukemono (Japanese pickles)
Before the refrigerator, Japan kept its vegetables by pickling them in salt. When Kyoto was chosen as the nation's capital in 794, a slew of items from Japan began to arrive in Kyoto and at the imperial court. Local artisans attempted to refine these products, resulting in a varied range of Kyoto crafts, including tsukemono.
Kyoto's top tsukemono are three types of pickles: shibazuke, senmaizuke, and sugizuke. Shibazuke is a sour and crunchy pickled mixture of sliced cucumber and eggplant with scarlet shiso (perilla or beefsteak plant). Shiso turns the ingredients pink.
Matcha
Kyoto is a beautiful place to explore matcha because it is the birthplace of the tea ceremony. You may get frothy green tea at many tea shops on temple grounds or in popular tourist places, with or without the ceremony. In Japan, matcha is the most acceptable type of green tea. To improve its color, flavor, fragrance, and nutritional value, it is made from tea leaves cultivated under certain circumstances, dried, and ground in a similar environment. Everything here adds to the sensory experience of drinking matcha.
Matcha is also delightful in its various modern guises, like soft-serve ice cream, cake, biscuits, and crackers, which can be found around Kyoto.
Yatsuhashi
Yatsuhashi is the most famous Kyoto souvenir sweet. It's created of rice flour, sugar, and Nikki, a type of Japanese cinnamon. Warming the dough before shaping it into a thin, half-pipe form and baking it results in crisp, slightly challenging cookies that resemble little brown roof tiles. Since 1689, this type of yatsuhashi has been around.
Matcha and sesame tastes, as well as more recent additions like chocolate and banana, are available in addition to the traditional cinnamon flavor.

Do you know of any cherry (like maraschino cherries) or cinnamon scented perfumes? I've been wanting one for ages
first of all, i am jazzed to be getting perfume asks! pls keep them coming - i love talking about fragrance & helping ppl find things. that said, i can't give personalized recs based on the info provided here as i don't know very much about your preferences & history with perfume. this is instead a list of perfumes i know of/like with these notes.
second, personal taste is subjective and there's a reason there is such a market for perfume samples! don't blind buy bottles as there is usually a way to get your hands on a smaller portion for testing. furthermore, it is difficult to determine your opinion of a perfume based on how it smells on paper, in the vial, or immediately on skin.
one of the extraordinary things about olfactive art is its capacity for transformation. your fragrance will change throughout the day, may change depending on the season, and your perception of it may change with time.
so: if any of these options intrigue you, start with a sample and test it frequently on skin before committing to a larger (and more expensive) size.
🍒cherry🍒:
cherry is a popular note right now! there are a couple obvious ones i feel the need to mention before going a bit more niche & indie. you specify maraschino, so I get the sense that a sweeter fragrance is not a problem here.
the most popular cherry, from where I sit, is tom ford's Lost Cherry (which is popular enough to have new flankers: Cherry Smoke & Electric Cherry). it has a boozy dark quality that almost reminds me of a cherry wine i had in Ukraine once. that quality does risk it going cough syrupy on some skin/to some noses.
on the new & buzzy side of things, we have the South Korean brand, BORNTOSTANDOUT's Indecent Cherry. this is bright, sweet, and warm, but not lacking in complexity. to my nose, it is an excellent cherry & worth the hype.
for a straightforward & joyful cherry (and perhaps my favorite that i've smelled), i recommend Italian Perfumer Hilde Soliani's Una Tira L'Altra. her gourmands are fun but unflinchingly accurate.
for the least straightforward cherry possible: Death & Floral's Black Cherry Bomb. Death & Floral is probably my favorite indie house. they strike a good balance between evocative abstract fragrance and creating solidly wearable & lovely fragrances.
Oh wow! I've written more than I thought here. Is it alright if I give you some cinnamon fragrances in another post? or in response to a separate ask? I have STRONG FEELINGS about cinnamon and a lot to recommend there.
thank you so much for asking this!! if anyone would like scent recs, i am genuinely so prepared and happy to respond. please flood my asks!
