summary; your boyfriend loves traveling around the world with you, to explore new tastes, share new memories together and experience some local culture.
tw ; fluff, established relationships, chris being gentle giant and your pookie
— ˗ˋ ୨୧ ˊ˗ —
just as soon as chris finished trainings and won latest championship, his sponsor offered him opportunity to travel to Korea - to evaluate some new possible team members and train them. honestly chris didn’t really cared about new people in team, real interesting fact for him was newfound possibility to visit another continent and try new, local cuisine, and oh, of course he didn’t forget that you also had an area where your enthusiasm went wild. so before agreeing to this trip Chris requested two visas permissions, including flight tickets and went home with a calm soul, in anticipation of telling you good news.
— ˗ˋ ୨୧ ˊ˗ —
it’s been a while since you and Chris went somewhere on vacation. of course you followed him around on all his competitions, to show your support and assistance, if it was needed, but you honestly missed weekends when it was just you and your boyfriend. you missed time when you two explored new country through your own ways - Chris with his unstoppable urge to eat and endless stomach and you through the fashion. oh, how you like to explore new places with small shops that sells local handmade (bonus points for Chris if it's food, like homemade honey or jam, canned vegetables, local pastries or any kind of homemade alcohol), souvenir shops, shops of local brands, everything that is somehow connected with the new place where you just arrived and what it could be attributed to fashion or collecting!
there is a theory that if your energy doesn't match, or if you can't stand each other on vacation, then your relationship won't work out. well, you and Chris didn't have that problem. you have an idyll in this regard - all the places, and in general everything related to eating, were planned by Chris with special passion and trepidation. restaurants, cafes with good reviews and large portions, street food shops with the juiciest items, fairs where you can taste traditional dishes and see how they are prepared.
on the other hand, the cultural program was on you - museums, temples, exhibitions, where Chris obediently followed you as long as he was well-fed enough (you put an extra note in your head - to not leave a building if Chris hungry, pookie becomes really moody and whiny if he doesn’t eat enough… he is really dependent on food). and of course shopping - honestly, Chris shared your passion for souvenir shops. he could fill his stomach as much as he wanted, but you couldn't bring food with you as a memory, but collecting symbols in the form of animals from each country sounded fun. he has a separate shelf with a variety of animals that represent each country, and they all are in different styles - funny, realistic, cartoon, wooden, porcelain, stone.
— ˗ˋ ୨୧ ˊ˗ —
the flight to Korea was long but filled with excitement and anticipation. as soon as you landed, the vibrant energy of Seoul enveloped you. the city was a bustling mix of modern skyscrapers and ancient temples, and the aroma of street food wafted through the air.
Chris had already mapped out all the best places to eat, starting with a famous street food market. you spent hours wandering through the stalls, sampling everything from spicy tteokbokki to sweet hotteok. Chris's eyes lit up with every new dish, and you couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm.
after a few days of indulging in Korea's culinary delights, it was your turn to take the lead. you guided Chris through the narrow streets of Insadong, where traditional teahouses sat next to quirky boutiques and art galleries. you found a shop filled with some local clothes brands, their vibrant colors and intricate designs mesmerizing.
"Chris, look at this one," - you said, holding up a beautifully embroidered piece of clothing "isn't it stunning?" he nodded, appreciating the craftsmanship. "it's beautiful. you should try it on."
you spent the next hour trying on different items, each one more gorgeous than the last. Chris snapped pictures, his face beaming with pride as you modeled each outfit. next, you visited a quaint shop selling traditional Korean pottery. Chris found a small, intricately painted tiger that he added to his collection of animal souvenirs. "this will be a perfect addition," - he said, placing it carefully in his bag.
that evening, as the sun set over the Han River, you and Chris found a quiet spot to sit and watch the city lights come alive. he wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer. "this has been perfect," - he murmured, pressing his lips to the top of your head "i love experiencing all of this with you." you leaned into him, resting your head on his shoulder. "i feel the same. thank you for bringing me here, Chris."
— ˗ˋ ୨୧ ˊ˗ —
one afternoon, after exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace and wandering through Bukchon Hanok Village, a sudden downpour caught you both by surprise. laughing and soaked to the skin, you and Chris dashed into a nearby café, shaking off the rain as you entered. the cozy atmosphere welcomed you with the warm scent of broths and herbs. you found a small table by the window, the glass fogged from the contrast of the cool rain outside and the warmth inside. the café was quaint, with low wooden tables and cushions on the floor, traditional Korean paintings adorning the walls. Chris ordered two bowls of something traditional, hoping to warm you both up after the unexpected drenching. when the steaming soup bowls arrived, you eagerly took a sip, the rich, spicy broth spreading warmth through your chilled body.
Chris watched you with a tender smile, his heart swelling with love and admiration. he adored these moments with you, the way your eyes lit up when you saw something you liked, the small smile that tugged at your lips as you savored new experiences. you were his anchor, his joy, and seeing you happy made him feel complete.
as you continued to enjoy the soup, Chris froze for a moment, mesmerized by the beauty that surrounded him. your hair was slightly damp, your clothes clinging to your body, but your cheeks were flushed from the heat of the soup. your eyes were closed as you savored the wonderful spicy taste and the long-awaited warmth in your throat. Chris hung there for a while, admiring you, the spoon still halfway to his mouth and his mouth slightly open.
"you're so beautiful," - he whispered, almost to himself. you opened your eyes, meeting his gaze and smiling softly. "what?" - you asked, a hint of amusement in your voice. "nothing," - he replied, shaking his head with a chuckle. "i just love you so much" you chuckle, looking away from the bowl, and gazing at him through your eyelashes. "i love you too, Chris. this trip is amazing. thank you for bringing me here." he mischievously grinned at you, his eyes shining with mix of pride for himself, what a good boyfriend he is and genuine joy of sharing memories together.
as you finished your meal and the rain continued to pour outside, the warmth of the café and the love between you made everything else fade away. you were content, happy, and deeply in love, ready to face any adventure as long as you were together.

first vacation together || suh johnny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bf!johnny x reader
wc: 1330
cw: slightly suggestive
an: this was originally written with [redacted] member in mind but i skimmed through and made some quick edits, so apologies if i missed something.
Today was finally the day! You gathered all of your bags and made your way out the apartment door after getting a text from your boyfriend Johnny. This would be the first time you see each other in a month. Not only would you two be seeing each other, but you were going on vacation together for the first time.
Johnny had been extremely busy preparing for 127's comeback. It made him sad that he wasn't able to see you much so he decided to plan a week long getaway for the two of you. You offered to help him plan but he denied it so this whole trip would be a surprise to you. You walked out the front door and was greeted by the 6-foot tall man you called your boyfriend.
“My Love!! I've missed you so much,” he said pulling you into a big hug and kissing your forehead. “Hi baby! I missed you too,” you said grinning wide like a child. Once settled in the car you couldn't help but bombard Johnny with questions about where you were going. He giggled at you enthusiasm “You'll find out as soon as we get there.” You both arrived at the train station and boarded the train. You were so excited about the trip you couldn't keep still, bouncing in your seat. Johnny couldn't help but smile at his adorable partner.
4 hours later you arrived at the destination. Stepping off the train you breathed in the salty air of the seaside city of Busan. You were beyond excited, this was your first time outside of Seoul since moving to Korea. What made it even better was that you'd get to experience it with the love of you life. “Soo... what do you think?” Johnny asked nervously. “I love it! You remembered, I've always wanted to come here.” You smiled up at him and grabbed onto his hand. The two of you left the station hand in hand, walking through the city to your hotel.
At the hotel, Johnny opened the door to your room. You gasped at its large size then immediately ran over to the window to admire the view of the city below. Your room was on the top floor of the hotel which made it perfect to look over top of the buildings. It was starting to get darker outside and the lights on the buildings began to sparkle. Walking over to you and placing his arm around your waist, he turns you to face the bed. “Did you see the size of the bed?” he said with a smirk on his face, implying some naughty activities you two would be getting into later. “Johnnyyy”, you said whining and playfully smacking his arm. He let out a little chuckle. “Come on now, let's go before we're late for our dinner reservation.”
Once at the restaurant, the front desk host leads you through the restaurant to your table right on the water. It was perfect, just like a scene in a movie. Johnny was somehow able to reserve the entire patio juts for the two of you. The table was lit by candlelight and all that could be heard was the sound of crashing waves. Johnny held your hand from across the table, admiring your beauty in the candlelight and you both sat in silence, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. The food was amazing, as expected, and you shared a little cake for dessert. After dinner you two decided to walk around the city a bit and stumbled across a street market. You thought it would be the perfect place to find souvenirs for yourself and friends back in Seoul. Johnny walked past a small jewelry stall and saw a matching ring set that caught his eye. It was perfect, just your style. He thought it would be the perfect gift to remember this trip so he bought it, becoming giddy at the thought of how much you'll love it. You both continued to walk through the market, looking at the trinkets in all of the stalls and trying food sample. After buying a few souvenirs you made your way back to the hotel with arms linked together.
Suddenly Johnny pulls you aside to sit on a nearby bench and gives you a quick kiss on the cheek. He looks a bit nervous after pulling away and you take notice. “What's wrong baby, is everything okay?” He forms a light smile not wanting to worry you any further, “You know I love you so much. I just want to make this trip special. I feel so bad about not being able to spend time with you. My job takes up so much of my time, I don't want you to think I'm ignoring you. I just want this to be perfect.” You gently place your hand on top of his for reassurance. “It's okay baby. I understand that your job is very time consuming but you love what you do. That's one of my favorites things about you, you're so passionate. Just know I will always be there waiting for you and cheering you on,” you said placing a kiss on his cheek. Johnny smiled at your words and started to pull out a small box from his pocket. “I have something for you,” he said placing the ring on your finger. Tears began to form in your eyes at how sweet he was. “Thank you so much. I love it!” you said giving him a quick kiss. “It's starting to get cold, let’s hurry and head back,” he said drawing his jacket over your shoulders. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder and you rested your head on his arm, walking back to the hotel in silence, just enjoying the moment.
Over the next few days you enjoyed all of the attractions Busan had to offer. You guys went to the beach, explored the city, visited local temples, and rode in the sky canals. You were having such a fun time you didn't want it to end. On the last day of your trip Johnny wakes up and stretches his arms above his head and looks down to smile at your sleeping figure next to him. He gently gets out of bed trying not to wake you and steps over to the window to open the curtains. To his surprise it was dark and gloomy outside and rain started to drizzle. Visibly upset he thought “it wasn't supposed to rain at all this week. This was supposed to be their perfect vacation. I hope they're not to upset.” Lost in thought, he was startled by your voice. “Good Morning baby! What's wrong.” “It's raining today. Our plans are ruined.” He said sitting down on the edge of the bed and placing his head in his hands. “Let's just have a lazy day!” you said, “We can just lay in bed, cuddle, watch movies, and order room service.” Happy to see that you weren't upset, he tackles you down on the bed and covers you in kisses. ”Let's do it!” You both crawl back in bed and snuggle into each other. While you pick something to watch on Netflix, Johnny is busy ordering breakfast to be delivered to your room. For the next few hours you two would be comfortable in each others embrace.
”Hey look baby, the rain stopped. Did you want to go out?” You were enjoying the quiet time you were spending with Johnny. It had been so long since the two of you got to relax like this. You didn't want it to end. “Can we just stay like this?” you spoke softly. “Of course we can princess.” He said placing a kiss on your forehead. You wrapped your arms around Johnny’s bare torso and snuggled closer to him.
”Thank you for the vacation baby. I had a really good time. I love you.” you said smiling before slowly drifting off to sleep.

Back in the 1980s, when polenta was the hot new item on restaurant menus, I was eager to try it. I knew it was a traditional Italian dish, but it was foreign to everyone else, including me. I bought a package of cornmeal, began the preparation, and when it was done I realized I had been eating it all my life. It was the same dish Jonathan Harker ate before his encounter with Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel, known in the American South as “cornmeal mush” and “pap” in South Africa. But I knew it as mamaliga, which had been a staple in my grandma’s Romanian kitchen.
Because mamaliga was such an essential in our lives, I didn’t realize that most of my Jewish friends had never heard of it. The hallways in the buildings we lived in all had the same familiar scents of Ashkenazi staples we all knew — chicken soup, challah, braising briskets, and roasting chickens. Shared values and menus.
Except when it came to mamaliga, which I learned was limited to those of us whose ancestors were from Romania.
While our family was dining on cornmeal mush, everyone else was eating kasha varnishkes, a dish I ate regularly only after tasting it at my future mother-in-law’s house (it was love at first bite).
It all has to do with geography, I think. Polenta/mamaliga is based on cornmeal, which had been unknown anywhere except the Americas, where corn is indigenous. Christopher Columbus and other Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought corn to western Europe and Africa, where it flourished. Cornmeal became a staple.
Turkish traders noticed corn grain in the markets of Africa and brought some “granoturco” back to Southeast Europe, including the region we now know as Romania, which then belonged to the Ottoman Empire. In 1692, a Romanian nobleman tried some, thought it worthy, and introduced it to Romania. It became the country’s national dish.
A few years ago I visited “the old country,” including the city of Iasi, where my grandparents were born, and laid stones on the graves of my great-grandparents who are buried in the one remaining Jewish cemetery (when my grandparents lived there, the city was about one-third Jewish).
Naturally we sampled mamaliga, which is ever-present on every restaurant menu. It’s usually served as a side dish, much like any starch, but in my childhood, my grandma, and later on my mother, served mamaliga in a multitude of ways, including our favorite, mamaliga cu branza si smetana – mamaliga with cheese and sour cream, served for lunch or as a side dish at dairy dinners.
In my own kitchen, I’ve learned that mamaliga is incredibly versatile. I’ve used it as a substitute for potatoes, noodles, and rice (complete with butter, sauce, or gravy). I’ve served it as a full meal, as a topping for brisket or chicken pot pie filling, with mushroom ragout, and with caramelized onions and cheese. I’ve even mixed it with molasses and cream to make a quick Indian pudding.
The leftovers are spectacular, too. In fact, in Romanian households they make extra mamaliga to pour into a loaf pan, let it firm up, and then cut slices to fry to crispy goodness. I’ve served fried slices of “Romanian toast” for breakfast, topped them with gravy or cheese for lunch, or with a fried egg for dinner.
It’s no wonder that the Romanians called dried ground corn mamaliga, a word that translates to “food of gold.” It’s a tribute not merely to the grain’s beautiful yellow color, but to its adaptability. Whatever you call it, this dish is an enduring winner and, as far as I am concerned, another treasure of the Ashkenazi kitchen.

"Well if you can't, you can't. Thank you for giving us your time and effort into looking. I'm not sure what is causing our score to be poor, but I will look into it immediately." She smiled courteously, composure kept and level headed, despite internally… "WHAT THE HELL!? CREDIT SCORE TOO LOW?! THAT CAN'T BE! I've been working on raising that for the last year! I'm nearly debt free! …if you don't include those 3 loans I had to take out recently…" She stood up from the chair that sat across from the Proxy, lifting her bag with her. She had one more card to try, but it was a gamble. Then again, it always was a gamble in this business. "I will just have to contact my other proxy, Phaethon, for our next endeavor. I'm sure they will be delighted to work with me again. Have a good day!" She winked and turned to walk away, waiting for a brief second to see if the bait would be taken and exceptions be made to form a business partnership. If not, then her debt will only grow with the kind proxy team…
This approach wasn't exactly subtle. Mentioning a competitor, waiting for the response... treating her like a rookie. Yes, Riley's services were reasonably late to the scene, but in her opinion, safety was a much higher priority than being first to market. Her phylactery/possession trick shouldn't work -- something about the medium of Ether allowed her to use otherwise modest synecdocheal magic to reach out and 'skill-share' over vast distances... Not that that was relevant. No, the important thing was that she was being played, and pride was threatening to supersede reason. She didn't need the Hares' business! They were unreliable and shady -- beyond the very much black market that was Hollow raiding, at that.
And yet...
Tumblr media
"Tch. Hang on." She leaned down, pulled something out of her desk drawers. Not something: a disposable phlebotomy kit. Vacuum sealed, obsessively sterile.
"In the case that you get your credit score up, it's for the best that I have a sample prepared." I don't want to let anyone die in a Hollow. "Come here. I'll need about as much as a full blood draw, so get some orange juice and a cookie once you leave." This was an accounting firm, after all; they didn't exactly have a cool-down chair for patients.

Midsommar 2022 : Prompts and Memes Part 1
The sun begins its evening descent, bathing the sky in hues of pale yellow and gold. After a long day of collecting firewood and arranging the burning piles, your hard work is finally rewarded with the sight of a festival truly coming together. Merchants set up their wares and prepare their treats, filling the air with fragrant smoke and the warm scent of fried sweets.
Priests strike matches over each of your wood piles. Fires burns brightly. ‘tis the beginning of Midsommar!
The bonfires are burning….
[ ROAST ] Food over the fires, from meats to marshmallows. Each house has their own representative bonfire, and each fire has a large pot with their representative soup. Add something to it or try out what your classmates have been cooking.
[ EAGLES SOUP ] Black Eagles: Thick goulash, hearty, enough to feed a thousand soldiers. “Thousand Soldiers’ Soup” made with dried ingredients and reconstituted on the roads
[ LIONS SOUP ] Blue Lions: White fish, leeks, potatoes, heavy cream, keeps you nice and warm.
[ DEER SOUP ] Golden Deer: Broad beans, spiced sausages, seasonal vegetables, red hot with paprika imported from Dagda.
[ DANCE ] While Midsommar traditions began in the Empire and spread gradually across Fódlan, each country has its own Midsommar song and dance around the fire. Follow your house’s traditions, or bring in a little something from home.
[ BURN ] Burn different plants as offerings to the Goddess. Herbs and powders are sold by local vendors to change the scent and color of the smoke.
[ LEAP ] All around the hills outside of town, the people of Fódlan light bonfires to scare away evil spirits. Leaping over them is said to bring good luck, and many challenge each other to see who can jump the highest. Young couples link hands and try to jump together, hoping for prosperity in the year to come.
[ TELL ] Share stories around the fire. Lately, children have made a game out of whispering a story into their friend’s ear, who has to retell the story to the best of their ability to their friend, and so on. When the story finally reaches the end of the “convoy,” it’s often a completely new story.
[ TASTE ] Away from the noise of the festivities, the Chefs of the Round Table (the cooking club) has set up a mostly-private bonfire to test out some of their new creations. Their latest masterpiece? Something called a “marsh mallow,” a recipe from the Sreng region sweetened with vanilla and sugar. It’s supposedly delicious when toasted over a fire…
The Garland Moon begins...
[ CROWN ] Make a flower crown, or bestow one upon another.
[ GARLAND ] The Garland Moon is upon Fódlan, and garlands are being strung up all around Garreg Mach. Among the shop stalls selling handmade trinkets and knickknacks are florists with the last of the spring flowers, already woven and made into garlands and corsages. This may be your last chance to confess to your special someone before the season changes!
[ PAIR UP ] Single people get dressed up and paired off with other single people, this is the season of love and baby animals and the older adults won’t tolerate a humbug Singleton. If you already have a special someone, then dive right into the singing and dancing together!
[ SHOP ] The festivities draw merchants from all across the world to sell their wares, but beware: the crowds are ripe for pickpockets, and unscrupulous potion sellers take advantage of anyone who looks confused and gullible.
[ MUSIC ] There is no shortage of music or food. Join in with hymns around the cathedral, find the bards singing old folktales by the river, or try to swipe as many free samples as you can in the market.

Preparing for the High Holy Days in Algiers
As the first fruits of they year appeared in the street markets, Jewish housewives busied themselves preparing festive dishes, jams and jelly for the High Holy Days. The chidren enjoyed waffles, biscuits and ice cream. Caroline Elisheva Rebouh shares her memories of childhood in Algiers in the Morial newsletter (With thanks: Leon):
Tumblr media
Algerian street market
In the last days of the summer holidays, mothers were busying themselves with the household chores in readiness for the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot.
The families gathered around festive meals. They needed to prepare traditional dishes in advance for guests to sample, and especially  pre-prepared confectionery and pastries.  At the time, few of us had a refrigerator.
The markets overflowed with fruit of all kinds: housewives selected quinces, white-flesh sweet potatoes, figs, and pinkish grapes.
The quinces were chosen carefully to be almost sure that they were not “visited” by unwanted worms. They were rinsed,  peeled and cut into quarters –  hard to do as the fruit was hard. The seeds were removed and reserved separately for jam and quince jelly. People loved it  at the end of the Yom Kippur fast!
The fruits were boiled to soften the flesh so that  the sugar syrup seeped into the flesh of the fruit and the sugar remained clear. It was during this operation that the seeds (quince cores) were added so that the pectin let the syrup gel. Some of the boiled quinces were cooked over low heat. During the prolonged simmering,  sugar was added in small quantities,  while  the mix was stirred to make a fruit paste.
The figs were also quickly turned into a light-coloured and appetizing jam.
The grapes: we chose a variety called “bou amar” : the grapes were round, relatively large and pink. Mothers armed their children with fresh feathers  to deseed the grapes. The jam was also pinkish and pleasant, and some mothers would wrap the seeds of the grapes in fresh compresses to make jelly.
A little later there would appear small apples of a very pale green and with light pink spots on the side which were used for the Rosh Hashanah  seder and which were called Kabyle apples. Small white and pink peaches with firm, tender  and fragrant flesh  were also called Kabyle (Berber) – no doubt coming from Kabylia.
In Algiers,  we children ignored the entire selihoth period. We only experienced the season through the pleasure of tasting small amounts of candy floss, fine biscuits and other delights.
During and at the end of  summer,  small stalls “flowered” on street corners: the yaouled (children or young teenagers) offered us freshly-picked prickly pears which they peeled with dexterity and presented them on fig tree leaves  so that our little fingers did not touch the  thorns. Other yaouled offered grilled corn on the cob: we savoured them on the benches in the public gardens where we played with our cousins, neighbors and classmates.
From time to time, we gathered around small confectioners who tempted us with sugar of different colours which they sold in small quantities.  We sucked them by holding them between our fingers and then crunched our teeth on them.
The waffle merchants  announced their passage by waving wooden boards with handles on both sides. festooned with  mini-shutters which tinkled with a dry and dull sound.
At that time we liked our waffles a little thicker than ice cream cones. They were rolled up in cones and stacked in a sort of cylinder about one meter high. The merchant placed it at ground level to serve his young customers.
But fine biscuits weren’t the only popular waffles: at Grosoli, a popular ice cream parlor in Algiers, the ice cream cups were decorated with a fan or a fine rolled biscuit. The Bitone company also marketed what were called “funny wafers”  : they carried short slogans like “You won” or “I love you”.
When many years later we found ourselves in Marseille, we could no longer find ice creams like those of Algiers.

9 January 2024: Queen Rania visited the town of Wadi Musa in the governorate of Ma’an, where she met with the founders and beneficiaries of a number of local economic empowerment programs, and a group of proactive youth from across the governorate spearheading local initiatives.
During the visit, she met with Yousef Al Falahat, the founder of Thakafat, an initiative that creates financial empowerment opportunities for community members by connecting them with tourists seeking an authentic Jordanian experience.
Thakafat’s various projects, the majority of which are women-led, allow tourists to learn more about the area and its people by partaking in experiences including cooking, craft making, and spending time with local residents. Sourcing the supplies it uses for its projects from local merchants, including grocery stores and bakeries, Thakafat not only guarantees the authenticity of the experiences it offers, but also contributes to the sustainability and growth of local enterprises. A member of Thakafat’s team, Anmar Al Jbour, told Her Majesty about the inspiration behind the initiative and shared their plans to expand beyond Wadi Musa to Al Salt and Madaba, while others shared details about how they launched their initiatives with Her Majesty.
Her Majesty then stopped by Esraa Kitchen, a Thakafat project that introduces tourists to Jordanian cuisine by allowing them to sample local food and participate in its preparation. The kitchen, which provides part-time work opportunities to local women, has welcomed over 4,200 visitors from 32 countries around the world to date.
Queen Rania also visited the Nabataean Ladies Cooperative in Wadi Musa, where its board members and president, Fawziyeh Hasanat gave the queen a tour of the showroom and silver jewelry-making workshop.
Established in 1999, the cooperative aims to revive the art of Bedouin silver making and provide a unique tourist experience, while also creating jobs for local women.
The cooperative had previously received a financial grant from a program run by the Jordan River Foundation and funded by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The grant facilitated the cooperative’s purchase of machinery and raw materials required for the making of silver jewelry, and helped train 26 of its beneficiaries in the craft. With assistance from the Jordan River Foundation, the cooperative also managed to market its products at the Jordan River Designs exhibition.
The Queen then visited Abu Elias Restaurant, which serves traditional Jordanian dishes, to meet with a group of youth from across Ma’an working on creating and expanding their own community empowerment projects. Their initiatives range from projects in the arts, environmental awareness, translation and typing, chocolate making and molding, to volunteer work with families in need, including the delivery of assistance packages and housing renovations.
At the meeting, Her Majesty commended their efforts and drive, as well as the originality of their projects, which have benefited countless local families and community members.

I need to share with you all an Ask a Manager letter from a person working at what seems to be a costume/prop store and is irritated by what horror nerds their coworkers are. I am actually sympathetic to a certain extent (everyone endlessly repeating movie quotes would get old even if I like the movies) but it raises many questions.
I live in a small city which doesn’t have many employment opportunities. The city has a high unemployment rate, and it’s rare to find work that isn’t in shops, farming, etc. Six years ago, the city council launched a project to fund start-up business ideas for marginalized individuals, including those with disabilities.
One of these ideas has become extremely successful. It’s essentially four neurodivergent eccentrics who live every day like it’s Halloween. They are commissioned by various organizations around the state to create bespoke services and goods. They’ve attracted something of a following with projects coming in all year in preparation for October. Jobs include making props for a small amusement park, making decor for a children’s hospital, local authorities hiring them to run haunted houses, etc. Because it has council funding, the start-up needs a couple of additional employees for administration. I accepted one of these admin roles as there are so few office-based jobs in the area.
I have worked there for two years and I feel like I’m in some sort of alternative reality. The office is filled with robotics, costumes, and prop projects. I’ve kept my complaints to what I thought was minimal, but the number of official logged complaints about the four people is in double digits. As an example, one was about a ruined handbag that had been seized as a prop and filled with jelly and rubber eyeballs. The other admin worker isn’t helpful — he has multiple Halloween-themed tattoos and named his kids in obvious tribute (think names like Casper, Salem etc.).
The entire city sees the team as underdog heroes and they really are involved in worthwhile projects. I appreciate that they probably have been excluded through their lives and have finally found an opportunity to form a community and work in a field they love. But my nerves are in shreds with the constant screams and cackles emitted from every corner of a small office. The latest is a wildlife charity wanting to put nesting boxes for actual BATS! in the office. They’re paying for it as a promotional/marketing service, with the resident ghouls blogging about and videoing the bats. Am I nuts, or is this completely bizarre?
After I submitted a complaint about the plans to move bats in, the local newspaper ran a massive double spread about the Halloween grinch trying to destroy this deeply loved community enterprise. They took the stance that I am some stuffy busybody ruining disabled people’s opportunities to shine and create joy and community spirit. I wasn’t named in the article but it was obvious to locals who the villain was.
Quitting means I’d be signing up for many years in a manual or service job in a city where everyone hates me. My son is counting down the days until he can legally change his name so he won’t be recognized. I had minor surgery last year and the week off felt like the first time in two years I could breathe.
As I’m writing this to you, my coworkers are bellowing out lines from films at each other repetitively, then identifying them. Here’s a sample:
A : What an excellent day for an exorcism! J: The Exorcist, 1973!
T: Listen to them, children of the night! J : Dracula, 1931!
Help!
The advice given is basically “If you work at a Halloween place they’re going to be into Halloween, you just have to decide if you can stand it or not.” But questions people in the comments are raising are:
1. Was that “ruined purse” something that belonged to someone and coworkers filled with jelly, or was it a discarded item that they repurposed into a prop?
2. Putting bats in the office? Really? A real charity wants to do that? Or is this hyperbole for putting bat boxes outside?
3. Were those “double digits” of complaints from different people, or all from the letter writer?
4. Are all these details just changed to avoid identifying anyone, and is this really a Christmas prop place?
What do you all think?

no chance, no way (i won’t say it)
sharing something a little different for wip wednesday that’s been in my drafts for more than a year. dusting it off and trying to get motivation to finish it. AO3

Laurent flipped through his emails one more time before turning over for a night of restless sleep. He’d decided to set a meeting with a potential new acquisition and the preparations were set to begin tomorrow. It had been a while since he had actively participated in his family company. He’d spent his most recent years traveling and avoiding New York City except when required to show up to company meetings as stipulated by his trust. Laurent preferred to be alone on his travels and found more and more remote hideaways to spend months at a time. Most recently he had holed up in a chalet set in a basin of mountains in the Alaskan wilderness being catered to by a private chef and catching up on his reading list. He wished he had added Sun Tzu to it as he anxiously awaited his uncle’s reaction to his new project. He was almost certain Reg wouldn’t realize the play for what it was initially. He’d likely write it off as another one of Laurent’s passion projects.
Laurent wasn’t ready to fully challenge his uncle’s receivership of his father’s company. He decided to start with something small, something out of New York. Laurent had heard about luxury vineyard stays in a recent trip to Italy to blow off some steam after his uncle had ripped him a new one in a board meeting. After looking into any American corollaries, Laurent was certain that this was a market that was currently untapped and perfect as a new venture for Veretian. His family company had perfected the ultimate luxury retreat and what better than one situated on a vineyard and its rolling hills. He found the perfect option in a well-renowned family winery with an aging giant at the helm. Not only was the property situated on a beautiful and remote part of the Willamette Valley, the wine wasn’t half bad (or at least that’s what his favorite sommelier told him). He knew it was time to pounce on the property and bringing the patriarch to New York would seal the deal.
Turning over after setting his phone to charge, Laurent thinks he is ready to take this small step towards taking a more active role in Veretian.  He’s been able to put to rest his father and brother’s memories with the help of truly fantastic scotch and the years since their tragic accident. He knew his uncle wasn’t going to sit back without a fight but Laurent was starting to tire of his uncle’s more and more brazen attempts to cede control of Veretian. Starting to plan his return to Veretian was both exhilarating and terrifying. Laurent had initially been content taking a back seat to his uncle’s machinations but the recent sale of one of Laurent’s father’s favorite properties was truly unforgivable. Laurent had no interest in letting his uncle remake Veretian and was ready to fight to preserve his father and brother’s legacies.
———
Across the country, Damen was settling into dinner after a long day sampling soils to send out for testing. It had been a gruelling day in the hot sun. Damen had all but thrown off his clothes running into his backyard pool to get some relief from the stifling heat. Oregon rarely got this warm but for the past few days it had been stifling and Damen could not wait to feel the coolness of the water. After a few perfunctory laps and stretches, Damen toweled off and proceeded to pull out whatever had been prepared for dinner (ordered and carefully organized by his personal assistant). Damen missed having the free time to cook but wouldn’t give up his new role as winemaker for anything. It was worth the late nights and reheated meals to know they would be able to pull out a perfect vintage from his father’s heritage grapes. As he finished up his meal, he heard the scuffle of his dad’s slippers on the stairs. His dad’s trip across the country was coming up but his back has been acting up more and more recently from the wear and tear that came with years of tilling and planting the vines he had carefully transported from his home country. There was no doubt that his father would need to step back from the business entirely soon. His half brother, Kastor, seemed too interested in the fast life of LA to truly care about the vineyard. He only used it as an accolade he could wear on his shoulder and his ticket into the hottest LA events. Damen much preferred the company of the vines to any of the parties Kastor had dragged him to. Knowing the land and being intimately familiar with the small changes in weather from day to day was crucial to truly taking control of the family vineyard and maintaining the respect of the operation his dad had constructed. Theo grumbled into the kitchen, muttering about his interrupted sleep. Damen greeted him and offered to make tea. His father accepted and sat in one of the pair of armchairs overlooking their property. Damen joined him and looked out at the darkening night and pinpricks of stars in the sky.
Theo always preferred to converse in this particular part of the house. Not only could he see the fruits of his lifetime of labor, it also gave him the opportunity to look out into the distance rather than at his son’s face when the conversation turned serious. Damen instinctively knew his father wanted to talk to him about the upcoming trip to meet a potential new business partner.
“I think we can expect rain,” Damen stated, trying to veer the conversation away from business. Theo laughed.
“I appreciate the opportunity to talk grapes with you, but you must know I need to talk to you about something a bit more pressing.”  Damen scoffed at his dad’s pun, rolling his eyes and settling into another sermon about the benefits of partnership and sharing of burdens.
“And I know you didn’t agree to tea just to make a horrible joke. Tell me about New York.”
“Damen, the offer is quite compelling. Veretian owns some of the most desirable hotels in important travel destinations. I think it is worth our time to consider their offer. We’ve grown well past letting the occasional traveler bunk in the harvest barracks. Besides, the beauty of this place, the work your mother put into cultivating her gardens, these things should be shared. Building this hotel would be a way to show this to the world.”
Theo often talked about “sharing” the vineyard -- usually this translated from dad-speak into “please do something about your continual bachelorhood.”  Damen often fantasized about showing off his hard work to someone he loved. Spending all his time out in the vineyard with his right hand man Nikandros did nothing to further this goal and his dad was starting to tire of Damen’s standard work-related excuses.
“But do we have to work with someone out of New York City? They won’t know anything about our area. Not to mention the annoying time difference.”
As his father let out a groan into his mug, Damen could tell Theo was thinking about the long flight and dreading it.
“Dad, why don’t you let me go. You can’t possibly want to fly in your current condition. And maybe seeing this proposal in person will bring me around to see its brilliance.”
“If you’re certain the grapes won’t wither away in your absence,”  Theo joked at Damen’s expense. “Besides, it’s just the first meeting. Likely lunch in some fancy boardroom and then you’ll be headed back.”

Mr. Hat Guy,
[I feel a little weird to refer to him that way but I still go along with it]
As discussed a few days ago, a bitter version of grape juice has been prepared. We have 2 samples for you. Both made bitter from different alchemical reactions. I have tested it myself and it is safe for human consumption. One is bitter with slight hint of sweetness and tartness of the grapes as an aftertaste. The other is bitter and slightly sour.
Please let me know which one would you prefer after tasting and we can send more samples to you of your preferred choice for you to indulge in. I would like to see the potential markets for this drink so if you could share it with your colleagues or friends, it would be appreciated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Huh... You actually did it." Wanderer tilted his head, letting out a small, amused laugh. "Fine then. I'll try it."
Wanderer took test sips of both of the bottles. He took a moment to decide, however the main reason he enjoyed bitter-tasting things is due to the fascinating aftertaste they leave in his mouth. So, naturally, the one that was just bitter and sour appealed to him more.
"Second one's better."
Tumblr media
— In all fairness, he isn't the best taste-tester due to his admittedly strange preferences.
"... Sure, I'll give it to a few people."
Maybe the traveller, so he can see them make a dumb face at the bitterness.

Let’s talk about samples!
I return from the Easter break 🐣 with some food for thought to explore. I wondered for a long time whether I should come up with something striking or related to past core content, but since I would like to revisit my Erasmus, I decided to put together my experiences and insights from my colleagues' blogs and from course lectures tied to this project.
GUERRILLA DESIGN is the first shot
I came across this concept while scrolling through the course material and would like to bring it into a declination of examples chosen to mix my personal experience with its relevance in a social and cultural context.
We can barely try to define this extremely varied practice:
“Unsanctioned, unscripted, and seemingly “undesirable” activities have long appropriated urban spaces in routine and sometimes unexpected ways, bringing new meanings and unforeseen functions to those places.”
This special issue aims to advance our understanding of urban design by situating it in a broader social, economic and political practice that includes formal and informal practices performed by a wide variety of individual and collective actors.
Expressiveness can be demonstrated by many nuances:
Street vending
When vendors take over street corners and sidewalks on a daily basis to provide basic and necessary services to city dwellers.
Here some cool, cutting-edge and Italian-vibes examples:
Graffiti
Gardening
Knitting
Skateboarding
Coming across the Graffiti thing I feel in the mood to share with you, tongue firmly planted in cheek, the most relevant model of resistance in street art beliefs: Banksy.
He has built a celebrated body of work, both permanent and impermanent, that uses satire, subversion, black humor and irony to create social, political and humanistic messages that resonate with the masses on a popular and public level. He is credited with catapulting guerrilla work into the mainstream as a viable art form.
I had the opportunity to see a very well curated exhibition here in Vienna, which was extended until 16th of April, with a substantial portion of his artwork, and my attention was stolen by the material applications pasted into the public and collective environment.
That was my closest contact with Banksy's art and I really enjoyed all the provocative works, especially material and architectural ones, such as the following:
October 2013, Banksy undertook a month-long residency in New York entitled ‘Better Out Than In.’
Summer of 2015, Banksy opened the dystopian theme park Dismaland in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare. Prepared entirely in secret, the project unveiled 10 new works by Banksy as well as works from 58 other artists.
Banksy went on to participate in the designing of the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem in 2017, opposite the Israeli West Bank Barrier.
