Die Reise beginnt

Drum gingen wir los. Nach monatelanger Vorfreude, vielen Besuchen der Reiseabteilung einer örtlichen Buchhandlung und Recherche im Internet, stand für uns der Start unserer Reise an.

Bepackt mit unseren beiden Backpacks (Alex mit Lukas Backpack - vielen Dank), unseren Tagesrucksäcken und ein paar uns wichtigen Gegenständen begann unsere Reise.

Am 31.12.2018 um ca. 19:30 Uhr sollte unser Flug von Düsseldorf nach Bangkok starten. Bis zum Abheben wurde es dann doch ca. 20:10 Uhr, was eine pünktliche Landung am 01.01.2019 um ca. 13 Uhr nicht verhindern konnte.

Der Flug war lang, eng und kalt. Das uns überreichte Essen stand dem in nichts nach. Irgendwie haben wir die 11:30 Stunden aber überstanden. Wir könnten jetzt sicher ein Buch über die 20 Schlafhaltungen in einem Flugzeug schreiben, die ein Einschlafen nicht möglich machen ;-)

Bangkok ist ein großer städtischer Dschungel. Als Fußgänger auf der Straße fühlt man sich wie ein Mensch zweiter Klasse. Fußgängerampeln und Überwege suchten wir vergebens, das Rotlicht für Fahrzeugführer schien eher eine Empfehlung, als eine Verpflichtung zu sein.

Bangkok ist aber auch immer wieder ein Ort, an dem man unglaubliche Vielfalt erlebt. Wir sahen gigantische Hochhäuser und aneinandergereite Wellblechhütten. Noble Restaurants und an der Straße stehende Street-Food-Stände.

Wir konnten uns daran erfreuen, weil es einfach viel zu Entdecken gab.

An unserem ersten Tag fuhren wir mit einem Tuk-Tuk (Ein kleiner Motorroller mit angebauten Sitzplätzen für Mitfahrer, wacklig und rassant) zur berüchtigten Khao San Road. Dort soll es vor Farangs (Touristen) wimmeln und eine gute Auswahl an Street-Food geben.

Vor Ort wurden wir nicht enttäuscht. Die Straße macht mit ihren großen Reklametafeln und den vielen Lichtern den Eindruck eines thailändischen Times Square. Wir versorgten uns vor Ort mit unserem ersten Pad Thai (thailändisches Reisnudelgericht), einer Portion Mangos und einem frisch zubereiteten Kokoseis. Anschließend machten wir uns auf den Weg zu einer Rooftop Bar, die wir uns vorher auf der Karte herausgesucht hatten. Zum Schonen unserer finanziellen Mittel entschieden wir uns den Weg zu Fuß zurückzulegen, was einen 5km Fußmarsch für uns bedeutete. In der Nachbetrachtung war das sicherlich keine besonders gute Idee, da sich unsere Laune nach dem langen Weg durch die stinkenden Abgase der Straße nicht auf dem Höhepunkt befand.

Als wir dann jedoch auf der 55. Etage der Red Sky Bar standen und einen beeindruckenden Ausblick auf das Lichtermeer Bangkoks erhielten, war auch der vorherige lange Weg vergessen.

Danach machten wir uns mit der Straßenbahn auf den Weg zurück zu unserer Unterkunft, wo wir dann nach einem sehr langen Tag Schlaf finden konnten.

Unsere Unterkunft in Bangkok befand sich in der Nähe der Haltestelle Saphan Taksin, in einer Sackgasse bei einer viel befahrenen Straße. Wir hatten sie uns von Deutschland aus über Airbnb herausgesucht und waren ganz zufrieden mit ihr. Wir hatten unser eigenes klimatisiertes Zimmer mit Küche und Dusch-WC und waren mit der, wenn auch kargen, Einrichtung zufrieden. Unser Gastgeber Sutatt war auch freundlich und buchte uns für den 03.01. ein Grab Fahrzeug, welches uns früh morgens zum Flughafen bringen sollte. Grab ist vergleichbar mit Uber und eine Empfehlung, um von A nach B zu kommen.

Am zweiten Tag in Bangkok waren wir in der Silom Thai Cooking School. Hier waren wir 2015 bereits und fanden es wieder gut. Wir haben gelernt fünf verschiedene Gerichte zuzubereiten und wurden ein bisschen in die typischen thailändisches Zutaten eingeführt.

Anschließend waren wir noch auf einem großen Street-Food-Markt und sind mit dem Schiff ein Stück auf dem Fluss geschippert.

Am 03.01. wurden wir dann morgens um 05:00 Uhr von unserem Fahrer abgeholt, der uns zum Flughafen gefahren hat. Das war eine super Erleichterung, da der Weg zur Unterkunft nach dem Hinflug mit zwei Backpacks und dem ÖPNV beschwerlich war.

Vom Flughafen Don Umfang flogen wir dann mit Air Asia nach Hat Yai im Süden von Thailand. Der Flug dauerte ca. 1:30 Std. und war sehr angenehm.

Am Flughafen von Hat Yai gab es dann leider nur einen Anbieter für den Weitertransport nach Ko Lipe, weshalb wir pro Person 900 Baht bezahlt haben (wir hatten vorher einen Preis von 700 Baht recherchiert).

Ein Minibus hat uns dann zum Pier gebracht und ein Schnellboot uns und ca. 50 weitere Personen nach Ko Lipe. Die Fahrt mit dem Boot war ziemlich anstrengend und es gab auch eine Person, die sich übergeben musste, weil die Wellen schon sehr stark waren.

Die Fahrt nach Ko Lipe hat ca. 80 Minuten gedauert und bereits auf dem Weg haben wir anhand der passierten Inseln gesehen, wo es uns hinträgt.

In Ko Lipe angekommen haben wir dann erst einmal unserer Unterkunft suchen müssen, da sie sich etwas versteckt in der Inselmitte befindet. Wir schlafen hier in etwa 220 cm hohen Fäsern, die nachts zu Saunen werden. Wir dürfen uns dementsprechend nachts zwischen einem Aufguss und einem lauten Ventilator entscheiden. Sogar Alex war es zu warm, was schon etwas zu bedeuten hat :-)

Ko Lipe ist eine Insel mit sehr schönen Stränden, einer Walking Street mit einer großen Anzahl an Geschäften/Restaurants und vielen Touristen. Eigentlich befinden sich hier nur Touristen und wenige Einheimische, die in Holzhütten im Inselinneren wohnen. Scheinbar gibt es auf der Insel auch ein Müllproblem, da wir bereits viele Müllberge gesehen haben und oft vergebens nach öffentlichen Mülltonnen suchen.

Wir haben nicht das beste Wetter erwischt und es regnet ab und zu ganz leicht. Dazu kommt noch ein mäßiger Wind und bedeckter Himmel. Die Temperatur liegt trotzdem um die 30 Grad, sodass wir heute im Meer waren und zwischen Ko Lipe und Ko Adang zu einer Sandbank geschwommen/gelaufen sind. Das Wasser ist super warm und angenehm und die Strände sauber und mit einem schönen Sand.

Da wir mit unserer Unterkunft gerade nicht zu 100 % zufrieden sind, haben wir uns heute für die Zeit ab Montag nach einer anderen Unterkunft umgeschaut und werden ab Montag bis Mittwoch für zwei Nächte weiterziehen. Wir hatten hier eigentlich nur 4 Nächte geplant, aber es gefällt uns wirklich gut und wir wollen hier noch Stand Up Paddling ausprobieren und Schnorcheln.

Das Essen hier ist ganz lecker und kostet auch nicht viel. Wir bleiben meistens beim thailändischen Essen, sodass ein typisches Essen für uns hier aus einem Fruchtshake und einem Reis-/Nudelgericht besteht. Dafür bezahl man hier etwa 5 Euro pro Person, was für thailändische Verhältnisse relativ teuer ist.

Wir sind auf jeden Fall beide zufrieden, dass wir diese Reise angetreten haben und es ist schwer sich vorzustellen, dass wir noch drei Monate unterwegs sein werden. Die normalen Abläufe von Zuhause abzulegen und einfach in den Tag zu leben, fühlt sich sehr ungewohnt, aber auch gut an.

Unser nächstes Ziel wird ab Mittwoch wohl Langkawi sein. Das ist die Nachbarinsel und liegt bereits in Malaysia.

Bis dahin werden wir noch ein bisschen über Ko Lipe berichten und hoffentlich auch bald das eine oder andere Drohnenfoto liefern können, die sich bisher aufgrund des Wetters nur als schwerer Klotz im Rucksack gezeigt hat.

Ketika Saya Cuma Punya 1 Hari di Bangkok

Sebulan yang lalu saya sempat ke Bangkok untuk suatu pekerjaan. Tentu saja saya tidak benar-benar seorang diri di sana. Namun, ketika saya tidak ada kesibukan, baru deh saya benar-benar merasa sendiri. Bukan hal yang buruk kok, justru saya menikmati hal ini. Ketika menyadari bahwa saya cuma punya waktu satu hari untuk bersenang-senang di Bangkok, saya pun sempat bingung ingin melakukan apa, tetapi akhirnya saya putuskan untuk melancong ala turis.

Siang harinya saya memutuskan untuk pergi ke Khao San Road, untuk merasakan atmosfir backpacking. Saat pertama kali ke Bangkok, saya tidak sempat mengunjungi wilayah ini. Jadi, kali ini saya tidak mau melewatkan kesempatan ke daerah backpackers yang katanya mirip Kuta di Bali ini.

Pada awalnya, saya ingin mengunjungi Chatuchak untuk berburu kuliner yang ada di sana, namun saya lupa bahwa pasar tersebut hanya buka di akhir pekan. Oleh karena itu, saya memutuskan untuk mampir sebentar ke food bazaar di dekat Siam Square sebelum ke Khao San Road. Karena belum terlalu lapar, jadi saya cuma membeli sate daging di salah satu food stall yang ada di sana.

Setelah bosan melihat-lihat, maka selanjutnya saya menunggu bus yang menuju Khao San Road. Akan tetapi, setengah jam berikutnya bus yang saya nanti ini tidak juga datang. Maka akhirnya saya memutuskan untuk naik taksi. Meskipun jaraknya tidak terlalu jauh, namun jalanan yang macet membuat argo taksi saya menjadi agak mahal, yakni sekitar 120 THB. Tidak jauh berbeda dengan kondisi lalu lintas di Jakarta.

Setelah sampai di Khao San Road, maka saya memutuskan untuk berkeliling sebentar sambil mencari tempat makan yang paling pas. Saya sempat melalui pedagang camilan ekstrem yang menjual berbagai jenis serangga. Saya tergoda untuk membeli, namun pada saat itu saya sangat lapar sehingga akhirnya saya lebih memilih untuk makan Tom Yum. Yup, rasanya ada yang kurang jika saya tidak mencicipi Tom Yum langsung di negara asalnya.

Restoran dengan konsep semi outdoor yang saya datangi ini suasananya menyenangkan. Tom Yum yang saya pesan juga juara. Rasanya tidak terlalu berbeda dari beberapa restoran Tom Yum yang enak di Jakarta, tapi seafood nya melimpah. Harganya juga cukup terjangkau, sedikit lebih murah dibandingkan restoran Thailand di Jakarta. Saya beri nilai empat dari lima deh.

Setelah makan siang (atau lebih tepatnya sore), saya memutuskan untuk berpindah tempat. Saya ingin melihat kehidupan malam di Bangkok. Kira-kira pukul 7 malam, saya meningggalkan Khao San Road (setelah berbelanja terlebih dahulu). Kali itu saya memutuskan untuk menggunakan boat untuk ke Patpong. Saya ingin melihat pasar malam di sana. Tetapi, sebenarnya saya juga penasaran sekali pada red light district nya.

Saya sama sekali tidak tahu rute menuju Patpong, jadi saya benar-benar mengandalkan Google. Ada beberapa cara menuju Patpong dari Khao San Road, yakni dengan mengunakan bus, taksi, dan perahu. Saya tidak yakin bahwa bus bakal cepat datang dan saya malas menghadapi kemacetan. Naik taksi tentunya biayanya mahal, apalagi saya sudah naik taksi sebelumnya di hari itu. Maka akhirnya, saya memutuskan untuk naik perahu.

Dari Khao San Road, saya berjalan kaki menuju Chao Phraya Express Boat dengan mengandalkan Google Map. Kira-kira saya sampai di sana dalam waktu 15 menit. Kemudian saya bertanya pada petugas mengenai tempat pemberhentian perahu bila saya ingin ke Patpong. Petugas memberi tahu bahwa saya harus turun di Sathorn Pier. Karena loketnya sudah tutup, maka saya membayar tiketnya ketika saya sudah naik di perahu. Kira-kira perjalanan dengan boat memakan waktu sekitar 20 menit.

Naik boat benar-benar pilihan yang tepat. Selain terhindar dari macet, pemandangan yang bisa saya lihat dari boat cukup bagus. Ada beberapa tempat wisata seperti Wat Arun dan Memorial Bridge yang saya lalui. Cahaya lampu membuat tempat-tempat tersebut menjadi semakin indah. Selain itu, saya juga melihat banyak kapal mewah yang menawarkan makan malam berkelas untuk turis. Ingin rasanya berada di salah satu kapal mewah tersebut.

Setelah sampai di Sathorn Pier, saya berjalan menuju Saphan Taksin BTS Station untuk naik kereta ke Sala Daeng Station. Patpong cuma berjarak 5 menit dengan berjalan kaki dari stasiun tersebut. Meskipun terdengar agak ribet, namun menurut saya perjalanan dengan boat jauh lebih efisien bila dibandingkan menggunakan taksi atau bus.

Sayangnya, Patpong tidak seperti yang saya bayangkan. Malam itu cenderung sepi. Suasananya jadi kurang hidup. Saya juga tidak menemukan sesuatu yang menarik perhatian saya di pasar malamnya. Saya memperhatikan banyak penari erotis yang terlihat bosan menunggu pelanggan. Saya memutuskan untuk tidak mengambil gambar di sana, karena saya merasa kasihan pada para penari erotis yang mengharapkan tamu. Oh, tapi pada malam sebelumnya, saya sempat pergi ke red light district lain yang tidak kalah terkenal di Bangkok.

Ternyata tidak jauh dari tempat menginap saya di Sukhumvit, terdapat salah satu red light district yang paling terkenal di Bangkok, nama jalan ini adalah Soi Cowboy. Meskipun bukan sebuah jalan yang besar, namun jumlah strip club yang ada di sana jauh lebih banyak bila dibandingkan dengan yang ada di Patpong. Pengunjungnya juga ramai meskipun bukan di akhir pekan. Saya terpukau pada gemerlapnya kehidupan malam di sana.

Semua perempuan yang saya lihat terlihat sangat cantik. Tubuh mereka juga langsing sekali bak runway model. Saya berusaha untuk tetap terlihat respectful ketika mengambil gambar. Malam itu saya tidak sendirian. Saya ditemani oleh salah satu rekan kerja saya yang juga ikut ke Bangkok. Ternyata dia hafal betul mengenai tempat-tempat populer di Bangkok, karena dia pernah tinggal di sana selama dua bulan.

Meskipun para penari erotis di sini cukup terbuka pada turis, namun perlu diingat bahwa tempat ini bukan merupakan tempat wisata. Soi Cowboy adalah tempat mereka mencari nafkah dan mereka mengharapkan pengunjung untuk menjadi tamu mereka. Jadi, sebaiknya hindari mengambil foto tanpa izin yang bersangkutan dan tetap hormati mereka.

Tempat terakhir yang saya kunjungi setelah meninggalkan Patpong adalah tempat pijat. Saya merasa lelah dan pegal sekali pada malam terakhir saya di sana dan saya memang sudah punya niat untuk mencoba Thai massage di Bangkok. Saya memilih tempat pijat yang letaknya tidak jauh dari hotel saya di dekat Phrom Phong Station. Saya membayar 750 THB untuk Thai massage selama dua jam di Centre Point Massage & Spa. Memang bukan harga yang murah, namun servis yang saya dapatkan benar-benar worth it. One of the best massages I have ever had.

Waking Up in Vegas

But really, Bangkok.

I’m starting this entry the same day it happened (something v. rare) so my thoughts and emotions are fresh. The feeling of awe which first struck this morning upon waking up has lingered throughout the day. It has been, and still is, the dominant emotion of the day as I sit and write this at a riverside bar, with the sun brandishing all her magnificence for one last hour before she retires for the day, and as Dillon orders another bottle of Singha.

Unfortunately, I’m not skilled enough to capture on paper this feeling of being surrounded in this sort of a bubble for our stay in LeBua. It’s the feeling of physical ease, comfort, a freedom from pain or constraints. It’s this extravagant opulence which isn’t forced, or out of place here. It’s the ability the hotel brings to somehow dupe yourself into forgetting about the outside world and all its troubles. Is this what life as a high-status celebrity or wealthy public figure always feels like? If this is their normal, they are irrefutably out-of-touch. It worried me to think that world leaders are living in this kind of a bubble.

We headed down to Cafe Mozu and were spoiled rotten by the breakfast buffet of freshly baked pastries and crepes and waffles made on request, the omelette station which also served Eggs Benedict and eggs sunny-side up, the sushi bar where fat strips of ruby red tuna were being expertly pressed against rice, the Chinese dimsum steamers agape beside the traditional continental breakfast station. Homemade organic mango yogurt sat beside the selection of seasonal fruit which was nestled against the porridge cauldron. It was the most awesome breakfast display I've ever seen and one I could not have imagined.

We dined poolside and, of course, committed the most rookie buffet mistake of trying to eat everything, making multiple journeys to achieve this, and always making sure not to overfill our plate and have it betray our feigned attempt to look indifferent to it all. Being greedy and feeling silly about trying to hide it was a strange experience.

After breakfast, we walked a short distance to the riverboat pier at Saphan Taksin and caught an orange flag express longtail upriver to Tha Tien Pier, where the famous reclining buddha rests at Wat Pho.

Next, we made the 3 baht river crossing to Wat Arun and had a look around the complex of 17th century temple apices encrusted with tiny mosaic-like pieces of colourful porcelain.

With the sun set approaching, we crossed back over on the 3 baht barge and found this little riverside rooftop deck I currently sit and type at.

History: The Wat Phra Kaeo(Thai: วัดพระแก้ว Wat Phra Kaeo, Pronunciation, English: Temple of the Emerald Buddha; full official name Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple (wat) in Thailand. It is a "potent religious political symbol and the palladium of Thai society". It is located in the historic center of Bangkok (district Phra Nakhon), within the precincts of the Grand Palace. The main building is the central ubosot, which houses the statue of Emerald Buddha. The legendary history of this Buddha image is traced to India, five centuries after the Lord Buddha attained Nirvana, till it was finally enshrined in Bangkok at the Wat Phra Kaew temple in 1782 during Rama I's reign (1782 1809). This marked the beginning and rise of the Chakri Dynasty of the present Kingdom of Thailand (the present head of the dynasty is King Rama IX. The Emerald Buddha, a dark green statue, is in a standing form, about 66 centimeters (26 in) tall, carved from a single jade stone (Emerald in Thai means deep green color and not the specific stone). It is carved in the meditating posture in the style of the Lanna school of northern Thailand. Except for the Thai King, no other person is allowed to touch the statue. The King changes the cloak around the statue three times a year, corresponding to the summer, winter, and rainy seasons, an important ritual performed to usher good fortune to the country during each season. While legend traces this statue to India, its rich historical records date its finding in Cambodia in the 15th century, moved to Laos in the 16th century and then to Vientiane where it remained for 215 years, and finally to Thailand in the 18th century. Considering the long history and Nagasena's (a Brahmin who became a Buddhist sage and lived about 150 BC) prophesy that the Emerald Buddha would bring "prosperity and pre-eminence to each country in which it resides", the Emerald Buddha deified in the Wat Phra Kaew is deeply revered and venerated in Thailand as the protector of the country.

Fête des lumières en Thaïlande : où fêter Loy Krathong 2019 ?

La fête des lumières ou Loy Krathong est certainement la plus belles fêtes bouddhistes célébrée en Thaïlande. Le soir du Loy Kratong, les thaïlandais se rendent près de cours d'eau pour y déposer de magnifique Krathon (petit radeau décoré en général avec des fleurs et des bougies) et allument des lanternes volantes thaïlandaises.
