On The Night Saint Etienne double down on the folky, cricket chirping atmo-pop of I’ve Been Trying to Tell You, only with far cleaner, clearer vocals from Sarah Cracknell. This late-period style is much preferred to the band’s downtempo alt-dance spoken word of circa 1993-2017, though those crisper Cracknell vocals (and especially the excruciating meditation/self-help bits) make The Night inferior to I’ve Been Trying to Tell You, clumsily splicing through otherwise thoughtfully crafted ambient soundbeds.
