marketing ploy — LN4 / ch.2

Saudi and Aussie. How bad can it go? Well, bad enough for Max and Charles to start asking questions. And maybe for Lando’s behavior to be a little off.

18 MARCH 2023 - JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA ↴
The Saudi Arabian heat burns across my shoulders as I duck into McLarens paddock behind Oscar. The tanktop I'm wearing doing nothing to help regulate the heat under my uniform shirt that I've unbuttoned and have tucked at my elbows. Oscar takes a long swig of his now empty water bottle before tossing it away and giving Lando a hug over the shoulder.
"Ready to die in this heat?" He asks, making Lando snort and nearly spit out his water. I giggle as Lando coughs after swallowing and find myself stepping up to stand right next to Oscar, peering up at Lando through my eyelashes as a few cameras click in our direction. It’s certainly odd for me to be here, and not already tucked away in Red Bull’s paddock. Hopefully other people notice that.
"I'm trying not to, man." Lando shakes the sweat of his water bottle in Oscar's direction, making him shriek and wipe the icy water off his face. I can hear the more of the media teams and reporters in the paddocks approaching, almost like a weird sixth sense.
"Morning, Mini Piastri." Lando leans down and gives me a proper hug, one I'm not expecting, but nonetheless I kindly return it. Reminding myself of the contract I'd signed nearly a month ago.
God, it had been a month already?
"Morning, Norris." I step back, adjusting my hair with a tiny giddy smile I let myself easily fake. He looks at me like I've hung the moon and stars for him, and I'm shocked at how easily he can fall into faking utter and complete love. He's a natural.
Someone calls Lando over from the other side of the paddock and as he excuses himself, he places a hand on my lower back as he moves behind me, and it lingers. His fingers glide along the fabric of my shirt, nails scratching at the skin underneath enough to make me look over my shoulder at him as he looks at me one last time before fully stepping away to whichever engineer had called his attention.
"When do you have to be with Red Bull?" Oscar asks, drawing my attention back to him as I try to swallow the blush on my face, "to see your second brother."
"You're so dramatic about Max." I laugh, punching his arm, "and not for another like... ten or so minutes, Kaycee, who works under me. She’s running all the analytic stuff this morning. She's gonna move up to be a co-head analyst."
"Oh! She’s the one with the red hair right? She's so sweet." Oscar takes a water from a worker who hands us both plastic bottles, and Lando ends up snaking back over and taking me by the wrist as Oscar is called over in his place. As Oscar turns away, Lando pulls me back to a far corner and lets me rest against it as he hovers in front of me. Shielding me from view.
"So, how exactly are we handling media?" He says, "like paparazzi?"
"I guess we should just act the same?" I hum, looking over at a few media personnel who hover around the car, the team, and Oscar. The paddocks are slowly buzzing to life as everyone's arriving for the day.
"Then, you have to act like you like me a little bit, Ollie." Lando leans in a bit, breath fanning across my cheeks and I tilt my head up to challenge him. But before I can say anything in retaliation my phone rings with a call from Christian.
"Gotta go, Nori." I smirk, poking his chest as I lean up into his personal space, lips inches apart. He looks down at my lips for half a second, before I step back and call over my shoulder as I leave,
"Tell Oscar I said good luck!"
--
Luckily no one had passed out at training.
I'm standing at the edge of the paddock, laughing as I flick water at a very heat-exhausted Max Verstappen. He'd done just as well as I had expected him to, everything with the car working just as we had expected, but once again he skews my data with faster laps than I've seen in his car ever.
This rivalry thing was going to cost someone a car at some point.
"Hey, Livie!" A voice shouts, and I turn to see Oscar. Considering he's the only one allowed to call me that, I can't even feign surprise at his sudden appearance outside the Red Bull paddock. Still in race gear. Fuckin’ Aussie.
"Ossie!" I grin back, and Max crosses his arms and wipes sweat from his hairline with a towel as Oscar approaches.
"Hey, Max." He says, wiping sweat from his face with the sleeve of his undershirt. Whistling to get my brothers attention, I toss him a plain white towel, a spare I had tucked in my pocket. I swear Oscar almost melts with appreciation when he sees it and then prompty wipes his entire face down.
"Good to see you, Oscar." Max nods, leaning on the shaded wall adjacent to me. He's been out of his gear for a while, considering he has almost thrown up from the heat twice today. We had pretty much shoved it off of him as soon as he was done with training.
"You weren't answering your phone, and I needed to give you your stuff, so I came over to tell you I've gotta stay late, they're making sure somethings not overheating or something." He tosses me a hotel key and my purse from his passenger seat, I can tell his vagueness is due to whatever issue there is probably being not fully explained. Or because Max is here, because he's usually tell me everything.
"I'll catch a ride back, no worries." I pat his shoulder and he nods, lifting his phone to his face and groaning. I can see Andrea's contact on his screen and I laugh softly at his clearly exhausted expression.
"Gotta go, again, see you for dinner?" He starts backing up and I nod.
"Seven, sharp!" I shout and he nods before turning and just taking off in a run before I see him vanish into the McLaren paddock, which is only separated from Red Bull by Williams, so it's not terribly far. Max and I stand in quiet for a few moments before I hear some keys jingle and look over to see Charles tossing his keys to Max. The two share a quick greeting as I readjust and tip the last drops of my water bottle into my mouth.
"Need a ride back?" Max asks as I lower the bottle, but a whistle takes my attention sideways where I see Lando approaching.
"Nope. See you guys tomorrow!" I cheekily grin, slipping off the wall to approach Lando who twirls his car keys absentmindedly. He smiles at my approach, adjusting his bag as he stops so I can meet him midway.
"Nice to see you, Ollie..You need a ride home, right?" He grins, placing a hand on my lower back once more and I lean up to tuck a stray hair back against the others.
"You too." I say, peeking behind me to see Max and Charles watching the two of us interact and a small idea pops in my head, "yeah, actually."
"Perfect." Lando's eyes lift to look at Max and Charles, and seconds later he's escorting me by the small of my back out of the paddocks. "Starting strong, aren't we?"
I can't help but laugh, hiding my mouth with my hand as we slip into the car park as we peacefully walk along various other racers whose eyes linger on Lando's hand a bit too long.
"Really strong, it seems." I say as he opens the passenger door to his car and I step in as if it's normal for this to happen, wasting no time settling in as he shuts the door and god damn why is that actually so hot?
As Lando settles next to me in the car, shutting his door, he smiles over at me.
"At least they can't say we aren't keeping up our end of the deal."

30 MARCH 2023 — CALL BETWEEN ADA AND OLIVIA ↴
“Welcome home, Miss Piastri.”
“Morning, Ada.”
“You and Lando need to start pushing this rhetoric of your dating a bit harder. Astrid is already speaking with him about it but we need a strong push here in Australia. It’s you and Oscar’s home race after all.”
“Were the paparazzi photos of me getting into his car not enough?”
“Oh they were, but we really wanna cement it.”
“So… what are you asking of me?”
“Today, Lando has been instructed to drive you to the track with a gift.”
“A gift? Like what?”
“You’ll see. But, we expect you to post that gift on your public instagram story. Preferably with some sort of McLaren indication—the orange hearts work well.”
“Christ. Okay, what else?”
“Oh. it’s time for the soft launch and the pictures in his team shirt. I’ll find you before the race tonight with more details.”
“Great…”
Lando’s luckily not in a papaya orange car this time. A black SUV fits him well, and will hopefully blend us in a bit more.
“Morning, Ollie.” he says as I climb in, Oscar somewhere behind me in the hotel still. I yawn in response, waving as I settle in the seat before I notice what he’s holding.
“Oh, Ada was serious.” I laugh at the little bouquet of flowers he holds towards me. They’re daises, my favorite flower, and then some yellow chrysanthemums and little pink roses sit behind them.
“She just said to get the daises.” Lando hands the flowers to me, and I happily take them, and then I notice one final thing resting in the cup holder.
“The girl at the coffee place I stopped at was a McLaren fan, so I asked her to write a ‘cute note for my girlfriend’ on the lid.” his voice lifts in octave as he recounts his words and then he lifts the little coffee in his cup holder so I can see it. That gesture alone makes me swoon just a little bit harder.
“Damn. My real boyfriend after this is gonna have some competition.” I giggle, taking the coffee from his hands and repositioning so I can snap a photo for instagram. He laughs in response to what I say, but I hear the leather of his steering wheel squeak as he grips it a bit tighter.
“Yeah. Boyfriend.” I swear I hear him mutter, but when I ask what he said, he swears he said nothing—so the conversation gets dropped there as he pulls out away from the hotel.

ryoooraces: NUMBER WHAT NOW??
oliviapiastri: always lovely to see you guys 🧡
no.rizz: IS THAT LANDOS FUCKING JACKET.
logansargeant: gears are turning.
— williamsbaby: LOGAN BE ONE OF US!!!
“Charles?” I pause in the doorway to my office, a Red Bull in my hands, bag and purse over one shoulder. The thick jacket I wear making my arms—which hold the flowers, an empty coffee cup, and files I couldn’t fit in my purse tightly to my chest. Both him and Max are pressed along the wall where the door opens and in my rush, I nearly whacked Charles with the door as I kicked it open.
“I have a question.” Max states as soon as I’ve plopped my mess of stuff on my desk, and I hold up a finger as I chug the rest of my lemon Red Bull, make a face, and toss the can along with a coffee cup in the tiny trash can under the desk.
“Well, I do too.” I turn to both men before kneeling down to grab an empty vase from my cabinet along with a stray pair of scissors, “so, fire away.”
“Why are you spending so much time with McLaren?” Max asks as I start moving my files and such to my chair so I can cut and put the flowers in their new temporary home before they live on my mothers kitchen window until their inevitable death, “it’s usually impossible for you to leave the paddock here unless Oscar himself comes and drags you away.”
“And the Lando jacket?” Charles tacks on at the end, smacking Max’s shoulder as if they’d agreed to mention it. The two are as close and you can be at this point, so I’m not surprised at their brotherly antics. I can tell that the two of them have taken it upon themselves to figure out what exactly is going on, just as brothers—or in my case sisters, do.
Oh, a perfect opportunity just appeared in front of me. A way to really get the ball rolling on this whole ‘dating’ thing.
“It’s nothing serious.” I wave a hand, sorting the flowers into the vase with one hand. I shrug off the new Lando Norris varsity jacket merch once it gets too hot, plopping it on the back of my chair.
“Really?” Charles says with a dangerous curiosity in his tone that only makes me smile wider as I keep cutting stems, and popping flowers into the vase. I glance up once I’m done with the daises, eyes challenging Max’s and Charles’ sharp, curious gazes for half a second before I stand fully and let a fake, giddy, nervous smile cross my face.
“Maybe…” I ponder saying it, feeling heat rise to my face naturally as I imagine the way Lando grins at me whenever he sees me walking up, or the way his warm hand feels on my back as he guides me, “a certain McLaren driver has caught my eye.”
The two stare at me for a second, before there’s overlapping shouts with accents so thick in the heat of the moment I can barely understand a word being said.
“Good lord!” I shout through them and dissolve into laughter, Max smacks a hand on my desk—pointing at me.
“So you are dating him?” he asks and I immediately shake my head.
“No, no. Again, it’s nothing serious.” I reply as calmly as I can, feeling a bit bad for lying but knowing in the end no one would be hurt. It wasn’t even like I actually loved Lando, I just liked the way he pretended to be my boyfriend. It was… really cute.
“But he buys you flowers and coffee, you wear his merch, visit him instead of Oscar, he drives you everywhere—is that not dating?” Charles says, crossing his arms over his Ferrari team shirt, “and why are you both being so sneaky about it?”
“He’s a friend for now, guys, and we aren’t really being sneaky!” I sigh as I finish up with the small amount of roses and chrysanthemums, beginning to organize the flowers to hide the shakiness of my hands.
I hate lying so much. If it’s this bad with Max and Charles, the conversation I’m going to have with Oscar will be unbearable.
“Well.” Max pauses, and Charles shrugs, “I guess it’s fine.”
“Wait—are you giving me your approval of Lando? Like a brother?”
“We both are.” Charles makes his way to the doorway, grabbing the handle to the door and stepping out, “he’s a good kid!”
I stare after Charles for a few seconds before my gaze lifts to Max, who grins at me.
“And now half of the Red Bull garage owes us money. Thanks.” He punches my shoulder and as he’s leaving the words register and I can only shout at his retreating form—
“—You guys bet on this?!”

What would you want to tell the next U.S. president? FP asked nine thinkers from around the world to write a letter with their advice for him or her.
Dear Madam or Mr. President,
Congratulations on your election as president of the United States. You take office at a moment of enormous consequence for a world directly impacted by the twin challenges of energy security and climate change.
Democrats and Republicans disagree on many aspects of energy and climate policy. Yet your administration has the chance to chart a policy path forward that unites both parties around core areas of agreement to advance the U.S. national interest.
First, all should agree that climate change is real and worsening. The escalating threat of climate change is increasingly evident to anyone walking the streets of Phoenix in the summer, buying flood insurance in southern Florida, farming rice in Vietnam, or laboring outdoors in Pakistan. This year will almost certainly surpass 2023 as the warmest year on record.
Second, just as the energy revolution that made the United States the world’s largest oil and gas producer strengthened it economically and geopolitically, so will ensuring U.S. leadership in clean energy technologies enhance the country’s geostrategic position. In a new era of great-power competition, China’s dominance in certain clean energy technologies—such as batteries and cobalt, lithium, graphite, and other critical minerals needed for clean energy products—threatens America’s economic competitiveness and the resilience of its energy supply chains. China’s overcapacity in manufacturing relative to current and future demand undermines investments in the United States and other countries and distorts demand signals that allow the most innovative and efficient firms to compete in the global market.
Third, using less oil in our domestic economy reduces our vulnerability to global oil supply disruptions, such as conflict in the Middle East or attacks on tankers in the Red Sea. Even with the surge in U.S. oil production, the price of oil is set in the global market, so drivers feel the pain of oil price shocks regardless of how much oil the United States imports. True energy security comes from using less, not just producing more.
Fourth, energy security risks extend beyond geopolitics and require investing adequately in domestic energy supply to meet changing circumstances. Today, grid operators and regulators are increasingly warning that the antiquated U.S. electricity system, already adjusting to handle rising levels of intermittent solar and wind energy, is not prepared for growing electricity demand from electric cars, data centers, and artificial intelligence. These reliability concerns were evident when an auction this summer set a price nine times higher than last year’s to be paid by the nation’s largest grid operator to power generators that ensure power will be available when needed. A reliable and affordable power system requires investments in grids as well as diverse energy resources, from cheap but intermittent renewables to storage to on-demand power plants.
Fifth, expanding clean energy sectors in the rest of the world is in the national interest because doing so creates economic opportunities for U.S. firms, diversifies global energy supply chains away from China, and enhances U.S. soft power in rapidly growing economies. (In much the same way, the Marshall Plan not only rebuilt a war-ravaged Europe but also advanced U.S. economic interests, countered Soviet influence, and helped U.S. businesses.) Doing so is especially important in rising so-called middle powers, such as Brazil, India, or Saudi Arabia, that are intent on keeping their diplomatic options open and aligning with the United States or China as it suits them transactionally.
To prevent China from becoming a superpower in rapidly growing clean energy sectors, and thereby curbing the benefits the United States derives from being such a large oil and gas producer, your administration should increase investments in research and development for breakthrough clean energy technologies and boost domestic manufacturing of clean energy. Toward these ends, your administration should quickly finalize outstanding regulatory guidance to allow companies to access federal incentives. Your administration should also work with the other side of the aisle to provide the market with certainty that long-term tax incentives for clean energy deployment—which have bipartisan support and have already encouraged historic levels of private investment—will remain in place. Finally, your administration should work with Congress to counteract the unfair competitive advantage that nations such as China receive by manufacturing industrial products with higher greenhouse gas emissions. Such a carbon import tariff, as proposed with bipartisan support, should be paired with a domestic carbon fee to harmonize the policy with that of other nations—particularly the European Union’s planned carbon border adjustment mechanism.
Your ability to build a strong domestic industrial base in clean energy will be aided by sparking more domestic clean energy use. This is already growing quickly as market forces respond to rapidly falling costs. Increasing America’s ability to produce energy is also necessary to maintain electricity grid reliability and meet the growing needs of data centers and AI. To do so, your administration should prioritize making it easier to build energy infrastructure at scale, which today is the greatest barrier to boosting U.S. domestic energy production. On average, it takes more than a decade to build a new high-voltage transmission line in the United States, and the current backlog of renewable energy projects waiting to be connected to the power grid is twice as large as the electricity system itself. It takes almost two decades to bring a new mine online for the metals and minerals needed for clean energy products, such as lithium and copper.
The permitting reform bill recently negotiated by Sens. Joe Manchin and John Barrasso is a good place to start, but much more needs to be done to reform the nation’s permitting system—while respecting the need for sound environmental reviews and the rights of tribal communities. In addition, reforming the way utilities operate in the United States can increase the incentives that power companies have not just to build new infrastructure but to use existing infrastructure more efficiently. Such measures include deploying batteries to store renewable energy and rewiring old transmission lines with advanced conductors that can double the amount of power they move.
Grid reliability will also require more electricity from sources that are available at all times, known as firm power. Your administration should prioritize making it easier to construct power plants with advanced nuclear technology—which reduce costs, waste, and safety concerns—and to produce nuclear power plant fuel in the United States. Doing so also benefits U.S. national security, as Russia is building more than one-third of new nuclear reactors around the world to bolster its geostrategic influence. While Russia has been the leading exporter of reactors, China has by far the most reactors under construction at home and is thus poised to play an even bigger role in the international market going forward. The United States also currently imports roughly one-fifth of its enriched uranium from Russia. To counter this by building a stronger domestic nuclear industry, your administration should improve the licensing and approval process of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and reform the country’s nuclear waste management policies. In addition to nuclear power, your administration should also make it easier to permit geothermal power plants, which today can play a much larger role in meeting the nation’s energy needs thanks to recent innovations using technology advanced by the oil and gas sector for shale development.
Even with progress on all these challenges, it is unrealistic to expect that the United States can produce all the clean energy products it needs domestically. It will take many years to diminish China’s lead in critical mineral supply, battery manufacturing, and solar manufacturing. The rate of growth needed in clean energy is too overwhelming, and China’s head start is too great to diversify supply chains away from it if the United States relies solely on domestic manufacturing or that of a few friendly countries. As a result, diminishing China’s dominant position requires that your administration expand economic cooperation and trade partnerships with a vast number of other nations. Contrary to today’s protectionist trends, the best antidote to concerns about China’s clean technology dominance is more trade, not less.
Your administration should also strengthen existing tools that increase the supply of clean energy products in emerging and developing economies in order to diversify supply chains and counter China’s influence in these markets. For example, the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. (DFC) can be a powerful tool to support U.S. investment overseas, such as in African or Latin American projects to mine, refine, and process critical minerals. As DFC comes up for reauthorization next year, you should work with Congress to provide DFC with more resources and also change the way federal budgeting rules account for equity investments; this would allow DFC to make far more equity investments even with its existing funding. Your administration can also use DFC to encourage private investment in energy projects in emerging and developing economies by reducing the risk investors face from fluctuations in local currency that can significantly limit their returns or discourage their investment from the start. The U.S. Export-Import Bank is another tool to support the export of U.S. clean tech by providing financing for U.S. goods and services competing with foreign firms abroad.
Despite this country’s deep divisions and polarization, leaders of both parties should agree that bolstering clean energy production in the United States and in a broad range of partner countries around the world is in America’s economic and security interests.
I wish you much success in this work, which will also be the country’s success.

Mick Schumacher On F1 Exile: "It Has Been A Draining Few Years"
The son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher speaks to Kieran Jackson about his role as a Mercedes reserve driver, his deep desire to get back on the Formula 1 grid in 2025, and eyeing victory this weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The duties of a reserve driver in Formula 1 are unique, distinctive and unlike most back-ups in other sports. With the chances of a last-minute call-up to the cockpit extremely unlikely, you lead a life in the shadows; out of mind, but never fully out of sight. In Mick Schumacher’s case, he has been omnipresent in the F1 paddock for more than three years, but, to his detectible discontent, the last eighteen months have been without a race seat. "Fighting your way back is exhausting," Schumacher tells The Independent, in the familiar surroundings of the Mercedes motorhome. "You get this cake presented to you which is really good, but you're not allowed to eat it, and you have to watch everybody else eat it. So it's tough, for sure, but I know why I'm doing it."
Being the son of a seven-time world champion carries its own unusual burden. But the German, still something of a racing novice at the age of 25, wholeheartedly believes he is yet to be given a fair crack of the whip. His rookie year with Haas in 2021 was a write-off. Superior to teammate Nikita Mazepin, not finishing last was an achievement in one of the worst-performing cars in F1 history. His second year was where it all went wrong, however, finishing thirteen points behind the experienced Kevin Magnussen. But that wasn’t the issue; moreso, the expensive crashes which resulted in Netflix star Guenther Steiner losing patience and wielding the axe. Which brings us to now. Schumacher quickly accepted an olive branch from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, with Schumacher Sr concluding his career at the Silver Arrows in 2012, and he now plays backup to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. No chances as fortuitous as Ollie Bearman's in Saudi Arabia have come his way, though. "Frankly, the way I was two years ago has nothing to do with the person I am today," he insists. "F1 has been a dream I've had since I was five years old and I'm not ready to let go of that dream, right Sometimes you feel like you have a chance, then it actually never ends up happening because something else happens. It's been an emotional rollercoaster and a draining last few years, but I'm working my way back." Some would see the time away as an opportunity to rehabilitate and reset, but not Schumacher. One attribute that cannot be questioned is his commitment; he has barely missed a race in person and is regularly seen standing, headset on, dutifully listening to procedures next to Wolff in the garage.
That's the mantra when your life is "all about racing," and it is that hard-nosed, full-throttle attitude that sees him embark on the ultimate racing challenge this weekend: the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans event, driving for Alpine in their first year in endurance competition. "I'm very excited. I've got a huge amount of respect for it," says Schumacher, about an event which his father competed in before his F1 career started in 1991, finishing fifth. "It's going to be very little sleep, long driving times at night, and the testing has been tough so far. We're going for the win-that's the ultimate target-but if we're crossing the finish line after 25 hours I think we can be very proud, too, as this project was only set up eleven months ago. The turnaround has been very fast. But the mentality is to win because… why compete, otherwise?" Yet don't be fooled: a career in WEC is not at the forefront of his mind just yet. Because amid a flurry of driver changes ahead of the 2025 season and the fluctuating nature of the F1 driver market, Schumacher is desperate to carve a route back into the sport he loves. Alex Albon famously provided then-Williams CEO Jost Capito a racing CV in 2021 to sell his skills, littered with junior successes alongside F1 accomplishments. Could Schumacher, Formula 2 champion in 2020, do the same? "Maybe I will start writing my CV and send it to people!" he says. "It's never been a secret; my goal is to be back on the grid. I've shown in multiple ways that I am capable of winning championships. It's just a matter of it fitting into somebody's schedule - does it fit into their plan?" It won't be lost on him that Alpine, his WEC team, now have an F1 seat available in 2025, with Esteban Ocon departing at the end of this season. The French team look to be Schumacher's best option at this stage. A return to Haas seems unlikely, while forming an all-German partnership with Nico Hulkenberg at Sauber (soon to be Audi) also appears to be a long shot. And nobody is even mentioning him as a replacement for Hamilton at Mercedes, with Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli the favourite at this stage. But frankly, Schumacher won't care where. As he says, "any team is a valuable option," and, simply put, he just wants another invite to the twenty man party. "Theress a lot which hasn’t been seen yet, especially from a driving point of view," he says. "I understand how I could have improved [at Haas], and there's a lot more to show from my side. It's all about, what do you want in your team right now? Do you want somebody who you can build a team around? Good for marketing? Purely shut up and drive? There are so many different types of drivers. As for me, I'm really hungry for it. I just need to keep performing in WEC, showing everybody what I can do. Then people will know what they get if they hire me, and hopefully I'll be able to prove to everybody that they made the wrong decision in not keeping me."

'We were proven wrong' Wolff gives frank assessment of very different Mercedes concept
Mercedes' W14 and its W13 predecessor sport an unconventional design with slim – 'size zero' sidepods – but Team Principal Toto Wolff has admitted that their aerodynamic concept has been "proven wrong" by the success of their rivals. Mercedes took just one win last year, a season that saw Lewis Hamilton go without a win for the first campaign in his career. And on Friday in Saudi Arabia, team boss Wolff said that they'd strived for success with the W14 and last year's W13, but that the design concept had been "proven wrong". READ MORE: Hamilton says ‘tough’ Mercedes W14 ‘pretty much the same’ as predecessor after tricky opening day in Jeddah "I think we really tried hard to make it work, because the data that we have extrapolated showed us that this works. And we were proven wrong, very simply. And you can see that the two quickest cars [Red Bull and Aston Martin], including the Ferraris – the three quickest cars – have a similar concept of how they generate performance, and it's very different to ours. "And at a certain stage we came to the conclusion: we got this wrong. Simply, we got it wrong. Why we got it wrong, we're still analysing, because we follow data and we followed what simulations tell us; in that case we were misguided by those data." Mercedes took P5 and P7 in the opening race at the Bahrain International Circuit "All of us involved in the decision-making process came to the conclusion: 'Well, we can't continue that way'," continued Wolff. "We really tried to stick to it and we don't want to, under any circumstance, run in a one-way street saying, ‘We're going to make this work no matter what’, because it doesn't work. And I don't want to lose more time." Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the Mercedes boss explained that the W14 could soon take on a markedly different form. "I think that the car is going to look very different in five, six or seven races based on the decisions that we have taken and the development direction that we have embarked on," he said. DATA POINTS: What we learned from Friday practice in Saudi Arabia "I'd like to win every race starting Sunday but that's not realistic," said Wolff. However, Wolff remained measured as he assessed whether Mercedes could overhaul their whole car and take on Red Bull in the coming months, given the cost cap that affects every team on the grid. DRIVER MARKET: Why Wolff is ‘absolutely confident’ Hamilton will extend his Mercedes contract amid silly season talk "I think that it's out of the question that you change the chassis, because simply there is not enough budget in the cost cap. But changing the way the aerodynamics work and the bodywork is perfectly within the scope," he said. "Our goals: I'd like to win every race starting Sunday but that's not realistic. The goals are that based on the understanding that we have now, that over the next iterations of updates and learning, we can shave off a lot of performance deficit, because now we know and now we have all taken a decision in which direction to go." via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Hot take about Elongated buying Twitter and a theory of mine that I have
Ok so hear me out oomfies and everyone reading this
We all know that billionaire manchild bought the birdapp and now the company is in a state of chaos with a looming bankruptcy and breakdown, and it is probably a coincidence so bad it might be planned all along that this is happening just before the biggest sporting event thats held every 4 years (The World Cup which is to start a day before as of writing), yet this same manchild and memeing and acting everything is fine and even tweeted about how Twitter will provide the latest coverage etc, surely not a coincidence eh?
Now consider that the $44 billion spent which is way to high for a company thats supposed to be worth only $11 billion. Not all was from his pocket because sometimes you would need shareholders to aid with money, and Elon had the backing of the Saudi royal family with the amount of $1.9 billion through one of their princes, in exchange, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, owner of Kingdom Holdings of Saudi Arabia, became the 2nd largest shareholder and effectively some leverage on the direction of how Twitter is run under Elongated Muskrat, and it is well known by now that Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarch, or more accurately, an oligarchy between the House of Sauds and what I would describe as the 'Wahabbist' faction. Twitter also happens to be a major social media platform in not just Saudi Arabia but the Gulf Arab states as well, of which Saudi Arabia are more or less allies with minus the complicated relations with Qatar.
From this, it is important to note a few things of how Twitter has been used against the Saudi state as well as the Gulf states as general, for example, the Arab Spring of 2011 as social media spearheaded the movement which led to toppling of Middle Eastern and North African governments and civil unrest, the major Saudi allies affected by these were; Egypt, Bahrain (a failed revolution which was cracked down partially by Saudi support) and Tunisia (Also where it was the most successful as it led to democratic reforms while its long-time dictator fled and was granted asylum…by the Saudis) as far as my head can recall. There were also the attempts by the Saudi people to get more rights, most notably, lifting the ban on women driving and the dismantling of the archaic guardianship system of which had since happen at the cost of the activists getting exiled, jailed and worse fates while the Saudis took credit for doing so-called 'reforms' in their bid to keep their revenues as oil & gas runs out, a lot of these were spearheaded or spread to an international audience through Twitter and the Saudis as well as her allies have a bitter taste of what Twitter has caused to their grips of power and their global image.
So what I'm suggesting is that, the fact that Saudi Arabia de jure now has the 2nd largest sharhold on Twitter at the moment is that they deliberately enlisted the help of Elon Musk to sabotage and even essentially erase the free and open environment of Twitter in order to ensure there's no dissent against them or their allies both domestically and physically, the Saudi government has been found in the past employing employees of Twitter while Jack was running it to give info on Saudi accs and their secret police is rather active 24/7 on Twitter to catch dissenters, especially if they're influential people because at the end of the day, the Saudis domestically want an obedient population supporting the King and the Crown Price. At the same time, Saudi Arabia has a tendency to support or fund authoritarians no matter if they're in the east or the west because of commonality and that it gives them benefits like oil prices manipulation, markets to sell their oil or places where they can obtain weapons, food, cars perhaps, technology etc and they don't like accountability especially in the issues of their actions in Yemen and the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 with a tactic they pull off on dissidents exiled abroad (Luring them to the embassy only to get them kidnapped or assassinated). Again, if a lot of people and even news outlets call them out for their violations of human rights or their atrocities, that means bad business for their oil & gas industry, therefore, Saudi Arabia and its close partners are trying the best that they can to stop their declines before its too late while they still have billions in profits annually.
It is a shame tho because along with Tumblr, Twitter had been a gathering point for marginalized communities worldwide like BIPOC or the LGBT community, especially if they live in oppressive or abusive environments and it can be where they get support. Twitter also where anything major gets reported in real-time, sometimes even before the major news outlets start producing articles about it and can spread awareness about issues etc that mainstream medias would initially be reluctant to report on. This is something billionaires and authoritarians like Putin, Orban, the Saudi government, Murdoch and Elon Musk hate and it doesnt help that Muskrat has a personal vendetta on trans people as well and he's facing a midlife crisis so this is why I think Twitter is in this state at the moment, as if Elongated was a competent billionaire at the first place because he all started on apartheid blood money and he fled as it was about to be dismantled.
TL; DR The Saudis probably allied with Elon in a "You help me, I help you" deal and they have billions they could easily flush that could've been spent on actual beneficial things but erasing people's voices is easier for them

Mick Schumacher on F1 exile: 'It has been a draining few years'
The son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher speaks to Kieran Jackson about his role as a Mercedes reserve driver, his deep desire to get back on the Formula 1 grid in 2025, and eyeing victory this weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The duties of a reserve driver in Formula 1 are unique, distinctive, and unlike most back-ups in other sports. With the chances of a last-minute call-up to the cockpit extremely unlikely, you lead a life in the shadows; out of mind, but never fully out of sight. In Mick Schumacher's case, he has been omnipresent in the F1 paddock for more than three years but, to his detectible discontent, the last eighteen months have been without a race seat. "Fighting your way back is exhausting," Schumacher tells The Independent, in the familiar surroundings of the Mercedes motorhome. "You get this cake presented to you which is really good, but you're not allowed to eat it, and you have to watch everybody else eat it. So it's tough, for sure, but I know why I'm doing it." Being the son of a seven-time world champion carries its own unusual burden, but the German, still something of a racing novice at the age of 25, wholeheartedly believes he is yet to be given a fair crack of the whip. His rookie year with Haas in 2021 was a write-off; superior to teammate Nikita Mazepin, not finishing last was an achievement in one of the worst-performing cars in F1 history. His second year was where it all went wrong, however, finishing thirteen points behind the experienced Kevin Magnussen. But that wasn't the issue; moreso, the expensive crashes which resulted in Netflix star Guenther Steiner losing patience and wielding the axe.
Which brings us to now. Schumacher quickly accepted an olive branch from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff-with Schumacher Sr concluding his career at the Silver Arrows in 2012-and he now plays backup to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. One attribute that cannot be questioned is his commitment. He has barely missed a race in person and is regularly seen standing, headset on, dutifully listening to procedures next to Wolff in the garage. That’s the mantra when your life is "all about racing," and it is that hard-nosed, full-throttle attitude that sees him embark on the ultimate racing challenge this weekend: the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans event, driving for Alpine in their first year in endurance competition. "I'm very excited. I've got a huge amount of respect for it," says Schumacher, about an event which his father competed in before his F1 career started in 1991, finishing fifth. "It's going to be very little sleep, long driving times at night, and the testing has been tough so far. We're going for the win, that's the ultimate target, but if we're crossing the finish line after 24 hours I think we can be very proud, too, as this project was only set up eleven months ago. The turnaround has been very fast. But the mentality is to win because… why compete, otherwise?"
Yet, don't be fooled: a career in WEC (World Endurance Championship) is not at the forefront of his mind just yet because, amid a flurry of driver changes ahead of the 2025 season and the fluctuating nature of the F1 driver market, Schumacher is desperate to carve a route back into the sport he loves. "It's never been a secret, my goal is to be back on the grid. I've shown in multiple ways that I am capable of winning championships. It's just a matter of it fitting into somebody's schedule; does it fit into their plan?" It won't be lost on him that Alpine, his WEC team, now have an F1 seat available in 2025, with Esteban Ocon departing at the end of this season. As he says, "any team is a valuable option," and, simply put, he just wants another invite to the twenty-man party. "There’s a lot which hasn't been seen yet, especially from a driving point of view," he says.

How to Identify the Best Automotive Paint Supplier in Saudi Arabia
Tumblr media
Choosing the right automotive paint is crucial for achieving a flawless, long-lasting finish on your vehicle. Whether you're a professional body shop owner or a car enthusiast, sourcing high-quality paint is key to ensuring your vehicle looks its best and remains protected from the elements. In Saudi Arabia, where the harsh climate can take a toll on a vehicle's exterior, finding the best automotive paint supplier is even more important. This blog will guide you through the essential factors to consider when selecting the best automotive paint supplier in Saudi Arabia.
Why Quality Automotive Paint Matters
High-quality automotive paint does more than just enhance the appearance of a vehicle. It also provides essential protection against environmental factors like UV rays, sand, and humidity, which are prevalent in Saudi Arabia. A quality paint job:
Enhances Aesthetic Appeal: High-quality paint offers a smooth, glossy finish that makes a vehicle stand out.
Protects Against Corrosion: A good paint job forms a barrier that protects the car's metal body from rust and corrosion.
Increases Resale Value: A well-painted vehicle can command a higher price on the resale market.
Offers Durability: Premium paints are more resistant to fading, chipping, and peeling, ensuring the vehicle maintains its appearance over time.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Automotive Paint Supplier in Saudi Arabia
To ensure you're getting the best products and service, keep the following factors in mind when selecting an automotive paint supplier:
Range of Products
The best suppliers offer a wide variety of paint options, including base coats, clear coats, primers, and specialized finishes. This ensures that you can find the exact type of paint needed for your specific project, whether it's a complete repaint or a minor touch-up.
Quality Assurance
Look for suppliers who provide paints that meet international quality standards. These suppliers should have a reputation for offering durable, UV-resistant, and color-consistent paints that can withstand the extreme weather conditions in Saudi Arabia.
Color Matching Technology
Accurate color matching is crucial, especially for touch-up jobs or custom paintwork. The best suppliers use advanced color matching technology to ensure a seamless match with the original paint or the desired color.
Technical Support
A reliable supplier will offer technical support and guidance on paint selection, application techniques, and troubleshooting. This is particularly important for professionals who require precise information to achieve the best results.
Availability and Distribution
Consider the availability of the supplier’s products across different regions in Saudi Arabia. A supplier with a broad distribution network ensures that you can easily access the products you need, reducing downtime on projects.
Sustainability
With growing environmental concerns, it’s beneficial to choose a supplier that offers eco-friendly paint options, such as low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints that are less harmful to the environment and safer for application.
Customer Reviews and Reputation
Before making a decision, research customer reviews and testimonials. A supplier with positive feedback and a strong reputation in the industry is more likely to provide high-quality products and excellent service.
Tips for Choosing the Right Automotive Paint Supplier
Ask for Samples: Request paint samples to test for quality, color accuracy, and ease of application before making a large purchase.
Compare Prices: While price shouldn’t be the only deciding factor, it’s important to compare prices to ensure you’re getting the best value without compromising on quality.
Visit Local Distributors: If possible, visit local distributors or showrooms to see the products in person and consult with knowledgeable staff.
Conclusion
Finding the best automotive paint supplier in Saudi Arabia is essential for anyone looking to achieve a professional, durable finish on their vehicle. By considering factors such as product range, quality assurance, color matching technology, and customer support, you can make an informed decision that meets your specific needs. With the right supplier, you can ensure your vehicle not only looks great but is also protected against the harsh Saudi climate.
