I love the Saw 5 sex scene where they have sex and fall in love

the appeal of strahm as a test subject lies largely in the fact that he did everything right—beyond simply being bright enough to follow instructions, he had it in him to outsmart a test trap that wasn't meant to be won at all. it's why it's so easy to root for him, why it's so satisfying to watch him drive that pen into his trachea. five films in and only now are we seeing somebody who could give jigsaw a run for his money—it's an exciting thing. which then makes it all the more devastating to see him bested, especially having come so, so close to getting out unscathed. and you sit there as the credits roll and wonder why. you try every avenue that might've led to a different outcome, maybe you seethe and fume and run to r/saw—this shouldn't have happened, does the director have shit for brains, what's this shoddy writing, strahm is better than that... and so on.

but he's not, really. strahm isn't only smart, he's capable of keeping a clear head in high-pressure situations and possesses a unique blend of simultaneously deficient and heightened self-preservation instincts—he's willing to grievously injure himself at a moment's notice on the off-chance he might live to tell the tale. he's all that, but at the root of it, he's self-reliant to the point of self-sabotage. it's not… arrogance, per se, but a built-in flaw. where everyone would take the easy way out, he can't. unfortunately, he did not account for the fact that the easy way out was here the only way out.

though "easy" is definitely up for debate, anyway. is it "easy" if it demands the rejection of deep-rooted beliefs? if it calls for the betrayal of one's core values? if it's asking one to forsake previously held loyalties? strahm's a lot of things, but not a turncoat. this is terrible news for turncoat nation, population: 1 (mark hoffman). group handholding starts in 10 minutes. group mass suicide in 20.
