Two Leiden professors ‘top of the class’ according to ScienceGuide

Professors Remco Breuker and Barend van der Meulen are ‘top of the class’ for academic year 2018-2019 according to ScienceGuide. This science magazine has just published its list of the most influential thinkers and do-ers in higher education and science, and Breuker and Van der Meulen are on it.

I always see blogs I follow get entertained by some specific secret anons sending messages, and I grab my popcorn and read those intriguing mystery conversations (bc that’s a normal thing to do, right?)Now it’s my anon time to shine 👀🌟 unless an ask is too weird and unsuitable for the public, in which case I must protect my community and not answer ✋ hahah

Also, sometimes I wonder if there are just a bunch of people out there who just send anon asks to me all the time while I assume it’s all different people? Maybe it’s true, or maybe I’m feeling a bit too self-important :D I will never know.

The offsetting deal with Elsevier includes all 6000 articles published by Dutch first authors annually with this publisher. The Netherlands pays M € 12 annually. This would amount to € 2000 per published article. But that number is misleading. In 2018, Elsevier will make only 1800 of the 6000 articles open access (in 420 of their 2500 journals). The remaining 4200 articles are placed behind a paywall. Thus, additional money may be requested elsewhere for access: a case of double dipping. Only via a surcharge of € 500 to € 5000 per article, Elsevier will collect these articles from the paywall and make them open access. For all 4200 articles, it will be over M € 12. Then the average price will be € 4000 per published article.
