Matsuyama Takes Historic Ninth PGA TOUR Victory At Genesis, Theegala 37th
Tumblr media
The Genesis Invitational: Japan’s star Hideki Matsuyama secured an historic three-stroke victory at The Genesis Invitational to become the leading Asian golfer with the most PGA TOUR titles with an unprecedented nine career wins. The 31-year-old started the final round six shots off the lead but put together one of the greatest rounds at the iconic Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles with a sensational 9-under 62 to win comfortably from Will Zalatoris (69) and Luke List (68). Overnight leader Patrick Cantlay finished tied fourth after a 72. The win was worth $4 million from the $20 million purse and moves him to No. 20 in the world with the entire major season ahead of him. Matsuyama now has 18 wins worldwide, eight on the Japan Golf Tour and the unofficial Hero World Challenge, also hosted by Tiger Woods. Indian-American Sahith Theegala (72-69-70-71) at 2-under had an average week in T-37th place, while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (66) was T-10 and Rory McIlroy (70) was T-24. Earlier tournament host Tiger Woods withdrew from the event in the second round due to illness. Matsuyama’s nine-birdie round without a bogey was the lowest final day score in history at Riviera and ended a frustrating two-year title drought. He broke a tie with Korea’s K.J. Choi for most victories by an Asian player. His only disappointment was not being able to receive The Genesis Invitational trophy from tournament host Tiger Woods, who had to withdraw from the event on Friday due to illness. “You know, to win in this tournament was one of my goals ever since I became a pro. After Tiger being the host, that goal became a lot bigger. A little disappointed I wasn't able to take a picture with Tiger today,” smiled Matsuyama, who won the Masters Tournament in 2021 to become Japan’s first male major champion. Woods did offer his congratulations to the newest PGA TOUR Signature event champion, who also became the second Asian to win The Genesis Invitational following Chinese Taipei’s T.C. Chen in 1987. “Congratulations to @hidekiofficial_ on an incredible win at @thegenesisinv. I was watching all day and seeing a record breaking 62 and coming from six shots back is truly special,” the American legend posted on X (formerly Twitter). Read the full article

Scottish Open 2022 Betting Preview
The golfing world is in Scotland for the Scottish Open 2022, before the eyes of the sports world turn to St. Andrews and the 150th edition of The Open Championship. But before golf plays its final major of the season, the Renaissance Club hosts the Scottish Open for the fourth time in the tournament’s existence. And in the previous three outings, we have seen some very good scores come from the leaderboard, including a 22-under par from Bernd Wiesberger in 2019.
Favorites to Win the Scottish Open
- Jon Rahm (+1200) - Justin Thomas (+1400) - Scottie Scheffler (+1400) - Xander Schauffele (+1800) - Matt Fitzpatrick (+2000) - Collin Morikawa (+2500) - Patrick Cantlay (+2500) - Cameron Smith (+2800) - Sam Burns (+2800) - Will Zalatoris (+2800) This weekend’s tournament features 14 of the top 15 players in the world, and it’s one of the few co-sanctioned events between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, which contributes to being such a strong field just one week before The Open Championship. As with most links courses in Scotland, the fairways are nice and wide, meaning that distance off the tee is more important than accuracy off the tee. The number one player in the world over his last 12 rounds in driving distance is Jon Rahm, who, not surprisingly, is the betting favorite here. Getting close to the pins on approach, however, will prove to be difficult. Bunkers will be a factor, as will greens that feature a number of hills. And when it comes to strokes gained on approach, three of the top five golfers in the world over the last 12 rounds are on this Scottish Open favorites board. Xander Schauffele is second in the world, Cameron Smith is third, and Sam Burns is fifth. Recent U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is also in the mix, and even though his best-ever Open finish was a T20 in 2019, the Englishman is back on his home island, and he has to be considered a top favorite.

Best Value Plays
A couple of DP World Tour players who you may not be familiar with highlight our best value plays of the weekend. First is Ryan Fox, paying +4000. The New Zealander currently ranks fourth in the European Tour, and he was just the runner-up last week at the Irish Open, shooting a 64 on Sunday to take home the title. Aaron Rai at +6600 is also someone worth a closer look. He was the winner at Scottish Open in 2020 on this course, and that was when the weather conditions were less than ideal. And when it comes to strokes gained on par 4’s between 450 and 500 yards - of which there are five on this course - Rai has been the best in the world over his last 12 rounds.

Ep 2307: Step Aside, Scottie Scheffler: It's The Rory Show - 11/04/22 by The Second Captains Podcast .... The US Masters was won by the world number 1 Scottie Scheffler last night, but in another, more important way, surely Rory McIlroy should be declared the winner? We discuss how Rory enlivened what would have been an otherwise routine Sunday evening in Augusta, and how Shane Lowry continues to excel in the big tournaments. There was also Tiger's grind, and Jim Nantz's minimalist commentary style, and a possibly superfluous Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mention.

Golf: Amateur Dunlap Grabs Historic PGA Tour Title At The American Express
Tumblr media
Official World Golf Ranking: The American Express tournament was sensationally won by 20-year-old Nick Dunlap, who became the first amateur since 1991 to win a PGA TOUR tournament as he ground out a 70 to edge South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout by a single stroke with his 29-under winning total. Chinese Taipei’s Kevin Yu flirted with a maiden PGA Tour victory with a scintillating final round of 9-under 63 before settling a career-equaling best finish of tied third at The US$8.4 American Express. Dunlap, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion who was competing on a sponsor's exemption, produced a gutsy up-and-down par save on the last for an historic victory over a stellar field which featured 21 players in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He also became the youngest winner at the age of 20 years and 29 days on TOUR since 1910. “It's everything that I dreamed of and just to have a chance on the last hole to win a PGA TOUR event is really special. I was so nervous (on the last hole). It's a really cool spot to be in as an amateur, and just to be here and be given the opportunity to play, and I don't ever want to forget today,” said Dunlap, who is in his sophomore year in University of Alabama. With a two-year exemption on offer to all PGA Tour winners plus guaranteed starts in all the Signature events and THE PLAYERS Championship, Dunlap will take his time to determine if he is to join the play-for-pay ranks soon. "That's something it doesn't just affect me, it affects a lot of people, coach back there and my teammates, and it's a conversation I need to have with a lot of people before I make that decision,” he said. The 25-year-old Yu, a former world amateur No. 1, was near flawless at PGA West Stadium Course with 10 birdies against a closing bogey which ultimately dashed his hopes of a career breakthrough. Japanese rookie Ryo Hisatsune, who earned his playing rights on the PGA Tour through the DP World Tour Top 10 last season, continued his strong start to 2024 by finishing T11 on 23-under, while Korean trio Sungjae Im, K.H. Lee and 2021 American Express winner Si Woo Kim shared 25th place on 19-under. After missing four months of action early last year with a knee surgery, the talented Yu displayed his immense potential once more by soaring into contention with an outward 30. He made four more birdies through 16 to jostle for the lead but a costly bogey on 18 after he found the fairway bunker eventually saw him finish two back. Yu shared third place with Xander Schauffele (65) and Justin Thomas (68). He is now looking forward to the Farmers Insurance Open which begins on Wednesday at Torrey Pines. Read the full article
