another part to my data boys as gummiphone assistants crack lol. Basic concept: Data Sora and Data Riku get sent to Riku's phone to accompany him on his ventures through unreality.

in this installment: Riku realizes his kh munny doesn't work in Unreality, so Data Riku pulls some bs in order to help Riku win prize money in a motorcycle race.

“That’ll be $25.03.”

Riku blinks. He looks down at his munny. He doesn’t know how to divide a single munny into “point three” munny. He’s never needed to do that back home.

He does the next best thing, and holds out twenty-six munny.

The cashier reflexively reaches out his hand, then pulls away. He stares at Riku’s hand, then glares at Riku’s face.

Riku pulls his munny back just an inch. “...I’m sorry, I only have twenty-six.”

The cashier squints, then glares again. “Is this a joke or something?”

Riku’s phone rings in his pocket, but Riku feels himself growing confused, and doesn’t want to add the data kids to the mess. “I don’t understand. What’s wrong? Is it the total?”

The cashier looks to the side, as if attempting to take a mental break from the situation, before turning back to Riku. “Dude, stop with the prank. You already ordered your food, just—”

“What is it?” someone calls from within the kitchen of the restaurant.

“Hold the food,” the cashier calls back. “This guy’s trying to pay in marbles or something.”

“What the fuck?”

Riku blinks. What did that mean? The word, the marbles, the prank, all of it?

“I’m sorry,” Riku apologizes again, and he knows Data Sora is going to give him a talking to for it. “I’m—Cancel my order, I—”

The cashier sighs, and taps on the monitor of the register. “Alright, man, just—don’t do this kinda stuff; no one watches prank videos anymore.”

Riku nods, despite not understanding a word being said, and ducks out of the restaurant, munny in hand.

He wanders the streets for a good while, until his confusion and embarrassment simmer down. Only then does he finally answer his phone, which hasn’t stopped ringing incessantly.

“Hellooo?!”

Riku braces himself. “What is it, Sora—”

“Riku! What was that? What happened? Why didn’t you answer? And what did I tell you about over-apologizing?”

“I was busy,” Riku quickly answers, if only because otherwise, Data Sora would keep asking questions.

“Busy not eating! And right when you finally decided to! Go back!”

Riku thinks about the munny he’d stuffed back in his pocket, and feels his earlier frustration returning. “And what? They wouldn’t take my munny, and I don’t think it’s because of something I did.”

Data Riku scoffs, and it’s the first sound he’s made this whole time. “That’s why I was calling you. Was there a weird “S” looking symbol on the menu?”

Riku doesn’t have to think twice. It had stood out to him instantly. “Yeah.”

“I thought so. That symbol represents the currency here. Your munny from home is different, and it won’t work here.”

“Then why didn’t you warn him?” Data Sora chides, lightly smacking Data Riku's elbow.

“I didn’t check until just a while ago, okay?”

Data Sora gasps, his mild anger seemingly vanishing. “Riku? Not planning ahead?”

Data Riku rolls his eyes, but Data Sora’s antics instantly improve Riku’s mood.

“So now what?” Riku asks, and now there’s less tension in his voice. “I haven’t run into any monsters here, and who’s to say they’d drop munny anyway?”

Data Sora crosses his arms into his usual thinking pose, humming. Data Riku, on the other hand, raises an eyebrow at Riku. The little smirk is back, and Riku can’t believe he used to do such a thing.

“I think I found something,” is all Data Riku says.

Data Sora’s arms fling out beside him in surprise. “Huh?”

Data Riku answers by strolling over to his beloved keyboard, and calling up a holographic display.

Riku blinks, and Data Sora gasps.

“So,” Data Riku asks cheekily, “do you remember how to ride?”

“How did you know about that?” Riku asks as he follows the gps on his phone. He glances up to read a street sign, then looks down at his phone again.

Data Riku scoffs. “Come on. If there’s one adventure of yours I have data of, it’s your time in The Grid.”

“That makes sense.”

Data Sora is turning from one Riku to the other, eyes wide. “Huh? Adventure? Grid? What’re you guys talking about?”

Data Riku points at the hologram in the middle of the room, and Data Sora is transfixed on it once more.

“What I understand so far is that you have to sign up for these things in advance,” Data Riku explains. “Because it’s an official event, which is the only kind that will even give you a chance at winning prize money.”

“Prize munny?” Data Sora asks. “I thought munny was no good here.”

“Currency,” Data Riku clarifies. “Money, different from ours. Or at least this world’s equivalent of munny.”

Riku turns a corner, and suddenly he hears the echoes of squealing tires. It sends a rush of excitement through Riku’s veins.

An obvious hole in their plan then makes itself known.

“How am I supposed to race? I don’t have a bike.”

Riku’s words cause Data Sora to turn back to the hologram from before, and he practically drools over the flickering image of a motorcycle. “Biiike…”

Data Riku keeps typing without missing a beat. “I was going to focus on the process of registering you for the races in the first place, first. But—” and Riku’s screen suddenly shows a different display “it’s done. Almost. Basically.”

Riku scans the webpage on his screen, slightly distracted by the increasing sounds of revving engines and the smell of burning rubber.

“This is the login screen for current racers,” Data Riku’s voice explains. “This will serve as a pathway between the gummiphone and the servers housing the roster data. I’ll do some tweaking, and if all goes well, you should appear on the roster as if you’ve been entered the whole time.”

Something about this situation feels vaguely familiar to Riku, but’s it’s a barely-there sensation that’s interrupted by the sound of Data Sora snoring in the background. Riku smiles. “What do you need me to do?”

The gummiphone screen switches back to the room in the datascape. “Here? Nothing,” Data Riku answers. “What I do want you to do is find me a vessel.”

Riku stops walking midstep. “What?!”

Again, Data Riku doesn’t even blink at his monitor. “It’s not for me. It’s for you. Or, more accurately, your bike.”

At this, Data Sora wakes up from his standing nap. “Bike? What bike?”

Both Riku’s smile.

“Exactly,” Data Riku says. “I can’t just make a bike out of nowhere, not out there. The code needs to exist within something tangible, preferably something which’s code I can simply rewrite.”

Riku nods, and looks around. “Alright. What exactly could you use as this ‘something’?”

The display on Riku’s phone screen changes, flickering between various images of different types of electronics.

“Any smart device should work. They’re like your gummiphone, devices that can be personalized and connect and interact with you as its user and other compatible devices.”

Riku commits the appearance of said devices to memory, and resumes his search. “Where could I find one?”

“...Go into that restaurant.”

Riku looks at his phone to see what Data Riku is referring to. Across the street is what looks like a fast food place, but Riku doesn’t understand.

“Why? I can’t buy anything there. That’s the whole reason we’re going through all this trouble to win prize money at the races.”

Data Riku is grinning, and it’s unsettling. “Just go in.”

Against his better judgement, Riku listens.

Once inside the restaurant, Data Riku instructs Riku to approach one of the booths labeled “self-checkout”. In the booth is a large tablet fixed in place, where it seems customers can place their order themselves without the need for a cashier.

Riku is about to experimentally tap at the display, when suddenly, the tablet starts to seemingly leak pixels—

“Oop—”

“Okay, leave the building,” Data Riku instructs.

Riku blinks. “What—Where did the screen go?”

“Don’t worry about it, just leave.”

Riku gapes at his phone. “Are you—Are you stealing?”

“Mind not announcing it to everyone here?” Data Riku’s arms are crossed. “And don’t forget we’re the same person. If I’m stealing, you’re stealing. Now let’s go.”

“Excuse me?” a voice calls, and Riku spots a woman in a uniform walking toward him. “Sir, do you need any—?”

Of course, this is the moment Data Sora decides to join the fun. “We’re stealing?! Awesome!” His voice rings clear from the phone speakers, and the woman balks.

Riku panics for a second, then bolts out the door. Behind him, he hears a voice shout, “What the fuck?”

He isn’t of a mind to ponder the word meaning this time.

On his phone screen, Data Sora is cackling, throwing his arm over Data Riku’s shoulder, who’s having way too much fun at Riku’s expense.

“I can’t believe you just stole a whole tablet,” Riku grunts as he flees the scene.

“Thanks for the vessel,” Data Riku answers, sounding unusually cheerful. “Hurry and get to the track.”

“I’d get there a lot faster with that bike you promised. It’s the least you can do after stealing from that restaurant. I can’t believe—”

Data Sora is still having the time of his life. “Way to go, Riku!” And Data Riku looks way too proud of himself at the praise.

Riku rolls his eyes after glancing over his shoulder for any pursuers. “Teenagers.”

“Alright, jump!”

“What—”

“Jump!”

Riku sees the pixels up ahead, glittering and reforming into a familiar shape.

He jumps.

And he lands on something solid just as the pixels settle into their new form.

People, cars, and buildings all flash past Riku as he crashes down the street, toward his original destination. Data Sora is absolutely losing it as he watches from the gummiphone (which Riku had docked on the console), and looks like he might pass out when Data Riku emulates the scene within their world, with the two of them cruising on a shared bike.

“Wait,” Riku shouts over the wind, and the engine. “Couldn’t I just sell this thing for money?”

“You’d really sell something that you stole?” Data Riku calls back, grinning when Data Sora wraps his arms around his waist.

Riku would swerve into a post if he could focus on the gummiphone for more than a split second at a time. “I didn’t steal anything; that was all you.”

“You keep telling yourself that.”

i didn't even get to write him actually racing lol oops. and there's a whole other side to this i'm imagining where sora drags yozora to the very same races riku is about to pop up in, sort of a rapunzel/eugene vibe lmao. yozora really doesn't know why tf his heart tells him to put up with sora's shit but he does it anyway. my poor amnesiac boys.

i also know i didn't really explain my bs logic for how data riku turns a tablet into a motorcycle (i never even mentioned the motorcycle once it appeared either LMAO). i would have, in data riku fashion, but it would've made for a block of text full of made up nonsense lol

Wodime, Gudako, Gudao and Hakuno are akin to Aloof Allies, sometimes helping each other just to silence and deal with the other servants. It is from time to time a very funny sight, until BB turns it almost into an Eldrich Horror sight if Hakuno is too threatened in the sitation

Melt is a bit stabby towards everyone, but it gets results

Colin Kroll, co-founder of HQ Trivia app, is found dead in New York City - The Boston Globe

NEW YORK — Colin Kroll, co-founder and chief executive of the popular HQ Trivia app, was found dead apparently of a drug overdose in his lower Manhattan apartment early Sunday, police said.

Police officers found his body facedown on his bed after a concerned woman called 911 and asked police to check up on him in his SoHo apartment, on Spring Street. The woman’s relationship to Kroll was unclear, but police said she grew worried about his well-being. Police said they found what appeared to be cocaine and heroin in the apartment.

Kroll was 34.

A spokeswoman for HQ Trivia said that the company became aware of Kroll’s death Sunday.

“We learned today of the passing of our friend and founder, Colin Kroll, and it’s with deep sadness that we say goodbye,” she said in an email. “Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The entrepreneur’s father, Alan Kroll, said in a phone interview: “He had so much talent and had accomplished so much at such a young age. It truly is a waste. At 34, imagine the things he’d done and the skills he had. It would have been really fun to watch him at 50. I guess that won’t happen.”

Alan Kroll said that his son had recently stopped drinking and did not have a drug problem, although he was aware that his son took drugs recreationally.

“He worked too many hours and too hard,” he said. “I think New York City got to him a little bit.”

Kroll was scheduled to visit his father in Michigan next week for a 10-day Christmas vacation, and that the two had talked about him moving away from New York.

“You need to have great constraint to have a disciplined life there,” he said.

He added, “All of that leads to getting too much drugs or bad drugs and overdosing.”

Before creating HQ Trivia, which livestreams 15-minute trivia shows typically twice a day to tens of thousands of mobile users, Kroll co-founded the six-second video app Vine, which was sold to Twitter in 2012 and closed down last year. Kroll went on to work briefly for Twitter, and later acknowledged being fired for “poor management” amid allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior toward women.

HQ Trivia quickly became a viral sensation when it debuted in August 2017, drawing together hordes of people for a livestreaming, interactive game, and inspired a range of copycat apps that aimed to seize on the same popular format. The app, which is based in New York, has experienced a drop-off in audience, but it continues to attract thousands of people to play in hopes of winning money by answering a dozen trivia questions on their phones.

The show is typically hosted by an energetic comedian who cracks jokes as he or she asks multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. Players use their touch screens to respond in less than 10 seconds, and the app shows how many people are eliminated after each round.

Kroll founded HQ Trivia with Rus Yusupov, who was also one of the co-founders of Vine. The two men had been working together since then, they said in an interview with The New York Times last year, with a special interest in video apps on smartphones.

“I will forever remember him for his kind soul and big heart,” Yusupov wrote on Twitter. “He made the world and internet a better place.”

This year, when the company raised $15 million in venture capital funding, Recode reported that some investors decided not to participate because of Kroll’s workplace history at Twitter. Kroll denied that he ever sexually harassed employees.

“It was a painful experience, but an eye-opening one that served as a catalyst for professional development and greater awareness in the office,” he told Axios in a statement. “I now realize that there are things I said and did that made some feel unappreciated or uncomfortable. I apologize to those people. Today, I’m committed to building HQ Trivia into a culture-defining product and supporting the dedicated team that makes it all possible.”

Alan Kroll said the Recode article troubled and hurt his son. He described Kroll as a “tough boss” and a hard-worker who routinely worked 100 hours a week.

“He had this hard Midwest drive about him,” said the father, who lives in the suburbs of Detroit, where he raised his three sons. “He couldn’t understand people that couldn’t keep up. I tried to explain to him that not everyone could do that.”

Kroll previously worked as an engineering manager for Yahoo from 2007 to 2009, and as chief technology officer at Jetsetter from 2009 to 2013.

He said in an interview with The Times last year that the company preferred to be based in New York, rather than San Francisco, because “our inspiration is more from media and TV than it is from technology.” Kroll was a fan of esports and livestreaming gaming platforms like Twitch, which inspired the development of HQ Trivia.

The medical examiner’s office will determine his cause of death.

“He was a young guy working on really creative stuff,” his father said. “Every day was a new day. It was how he lived until his death.”

Google wants to own the future of TV ad infrastructure (GOOGL)

Google wants to become an integral player in the TV ad landscape.

The company is trying to get TV companies to adopt its video ad tech software – and in the process is looking to displace Comcast.

The stakes are high, as Google would love to get a slice of the $72 billion US TV ad market. But the TV business has reasons to be wary of the search giant's clout.

For Google, TV is the final frontier. So it would make sense that to get there, the search giant started with Star Trek.

As CBS bets big on the latest original "Star Trek" series as the anchor series for its fledgling streaming subscription service CBS All Access, it is relying on Google's technology to deliver ads.

That partnership will hardly shift the power structure of the TV advertising business on its own. But it's a significant win for Google.

"The CBS partnership is big for us," said Rany Ng, Google’s director of product management for video. She points to the "Star Trek" digital distribution as an example of how seriously big media companies are taking the changes in TV.

Google has attempted to wedge its way into TV several times over the last decade, with very mixed results. But over the last six months or so, Google has been quietly and deliberately trying to sell its ad serving software to big TV and video players.

That puts Google directly in competition with cable giant Comcast – which owns Freewheel, the leader in delivering ads to people who stream TV shows on the web.

In some cases, Google has held corporate level discussions with some of the giant TV conglomerates about strategic partnerships. Those deals would theoretically provide these TV companies with some incentives for adopting Google's video ad technology, such as including proprietary access to some Google data that could be used for ad targeting, said people familiar with the matter.

The stakes are high. Though ad-free streaming services like Netflix still dominate, more and more people are streaming ad-supported TV content through smart TVs and apps, whether that's through Hulu, CBS All Access, or Watch ESPN.

If Google can insert itself into the TV ad ecosystem as the provider of the pipes through which most ads flow, it could establish a powerful position that could theoretically set it up to take on more.

For example, Google could offer some of its consumer data to help TV companies sell more targeted ads. It could maybe even build a TV ad exchange, accelerating a future when TV ads are traded "programmatically" much like web ads, using automated software.

"If you think about Google’s future growth, it’s not clear they can maintain the momentum they have without taking over the TV industry," said a media insider.

That is, if the TV business decides to let Google into its world. There are many that don't want them around.

Google's tried to crack TV for a long time

Google's current push into TV is a essentially a two-pronged approach. Besides trying to displace Comcast for ad delivery, last spring Google also rolled out an ad buying software tool, as Ad Age reported.

This is not the first time Google has made this move. As far back as 2007, Google had a business promising to bring elements of digital advertising to the TV world. It had deals to help TV networks sell excess inventory, but that initiative, Google TV Ads, never took off and was shuttered in 2012.

In addition, Google also has Android TV, software that powers many smart TVs. But its initial ambition to own the TV screen interface never materialized.

This time around, Google appears to have some real momentum.

Besides CBS, Google has inked deals with a growing number of TV networks to deliver ads in streams, including Bloomberg, AMC, the CW, BBC America and Lifetime. A few weeks ago, Google rolled out a slew of new ad products on this front – which AdExchanger covered in depth.

To date, over 50 top TV and entertainment companies in the US, Canada, and and Latin America use Google's ad platform.

To be sure, Comcast's Freewheel has a big head start in this space, and works with lots of marquee TV companies, including NBCUniversal, Disney and Turner. They won't be easy to unseat.

TV and the web are getting married

"This new generation is just not going to understand this concept of scheduled programming," said Ng at Google. "They are really screen agnostic. This is a massive viewer paradigm shift and something the whole industry is trying to figure out."

RokuTo help figure things out, Google promises media companies that its tech can yield much more sophisticated TV advertising. For example:

Google can tell you what people search for directly after watching a show or watching an ad.

TV networks can use Google's tools to gain more insight into the audiences that watch their shows, which can help with forecasting and managing revenue.

Advertisers can also use the Google software to bring their own data to the table for ad targeting.

Plus Google says its tools will make sure that people don't see the same ads over and over again and that competitive advertisers won't find theirs ads running next to each other.

"We use millions of signals," said Ng. "This is really about how to make TV ads smarter. Understanding people's interest and intent will help you really capture their attention."

What helps is that while Google is a relative newbie in TV production or ads sales, the company has a long track record in providing ad serving technology. The company's DoubleClick business is the most commonly used ad platform among publishers and advertisers to deliver web ads to the right place at the right time.

So if anyone's going to build the "DoubleClick of TV" it may as well be Google.

"Google is going to be seen as very legitimate in the marketplace," said Dave Morgan, CEO of the TV ad targeting firm Simulmedia. "This is a more natural way for them to get in through technology. I think they'll be formidable."

VCG/Getty ImagesYet Google will face some real resistance. Many in the TV industry fear the very idea of programmatic advertising to begin with, associating it with low prices and unnecessary middlemen.

And then there's the general fear of giving Google even more power, as TV executives watch it and Facebook – the dreaded duopoly – thoroughly dominate all comers in digital advertising.

Jason Burke, VP of strategic development at Clypd, an ad tech company with a foothold in the TV ad business, said that given Google's long-held, advantaged position as managing the leading ad delivery system in digital media (DoubleClick), they are surely salivating over making that thing same happen in the massive TV market. "But there are significant challenges."

For one, the technology is very different in TV, Burke said. Not to mention that Google competes with TV networks for ad budgets on YouTube.

"You'll have to consider whether you want to partner with a company that wakes up every morning trying to kill you," said a media executive.

Flickr/Orin ZebestThe biggest hurdle Google faces, said Burke, is that digital advertising deals with an oversupply of ad inventory. There's more ads than anybody can buy. So ad tech is very useful.

Because there are only so many ads that can be shown on TV networks in a 24 hour period, TV has a constrained supply, in contrast. The number of TV ads is essentially finite.

"The supply and demand dynamic is flipped,' said Burke "That's a pretty damn big difference." Plus, TV ads are typically sold weeks or months in advance, when web ads can be purchased at the last second.

And one top TV ad sales executive said that Google's TV ad tech is actually inferior to Freewheel's, and the switching challenges are "massive."

Yet Megan Latham, global head advertising operations for Bloomberg Media raved about the tech, which the company uses to deliver ads via Apple TV and plans to eventually employ for its live streaming. "They are using machine learning to help you make the most money you can from your ads," she said. "It really answers all of our needs."

Mad Men vs. Silicon Valley

Google also faces a big cultural barrier. TV is a $72 billion ad market in the US, one that's been growing of late.

Consider the recent TV ad sales upfront, the annual period when top TV networks sell upwards of two thirds of their its ad space. Despite all of the ratings challenges in TV, the market was , was robust, reported Variety.

And many of these big deals include streaming TV inventory. Meaning that TV ad networks aren't sitting on lots of unsold ad space.

So folks who've worked in TV for a long time may think, why mess with it?

"They are in an industry that has been established for years, and they're protecting an infrastructure," said Keith Grossman, chief revenue officer at Bloomberg. "But that's not the way brands want to operate."

"Some of these people are in denial that this is happening, or thinking, it's not going to happen before I retire," said Burke at Clypd. "A lot of people in the industry are very worried and scared."

You are not alone

Google isn't the only tech company trying to conquer TV ads. Facebook has been running tests with a handful of video partners to help them use Facebook's robust consumer data to target connected TV ads, reported Recode.

AT&T, with its pending acquisition of Time Warner, is pledging to reinvent TV advertising. And of course, there's Amazon, which is dipping its toe into TV ads this year by streaming NFL games.

Google may be just the most methodical about its plans at the moment.

"There's just so many things we can improve," said Ng "We think there's an opportunity to reinvent that 30-second commercial. I think people have been open to partnering with us. We're getting pretty strong traction."

After all, it might be a chance for TV to go boldly where it's never gone before.
