I honestly find myself thinking to Johnny Cade as a character very often and his subsequent mischaracterization.

What we notice with Johnny is that he's often babied. This is somewhat at fault of Ponyboy as a narrator, he describes him in a meek almost pathetic manner. I believe that overshadows his other descriptions of being a good fighter and also not being one to cry very often.

There has also been an outcry of people disagreeing with this narrative, (I generally understand and agree) however, they take it a step too far and characterize him as a cruel hardened greaser.

In reality, Johnny is somewhere in the middle. He's sensitive, being only 16 he's still navigating his own emotions. We also must understand that Johnny likely struggled with PTSD which manifested in his own violence. And if it wasn't that; he was suppressing it.

Either interpretations I believe do a great disservice to his character. It's either caricaturing a victim of PTSD as being helpless and infantilized or magnifying his vengeful tendencies in a way that doesn't grasp them.

At the end of the day, Johnny was just a kid with more trauma than he could handle.

Guys guys I have this crazy idea, imagine if in the outsiders Johnny didn’t actually die, Pony just made it up it to get a better grade on his writing assignment. While we’re at it what if none of the events in the book happened and he made it all up. Matter of fact what if some of the characters aren’t real. On top of that what if his name wasn’t even Ponyboy. Which leads us to; what if he was actually a teenage girl named Susan who made up the whole thing out of spite.

Details from The Outsiders you may have forgotten or missed

-Cherry doesn't appear after the hearing (her not waving Ponyboy is just a movie thing)

-Ponyboy fucking hates people with green eyes so bad and gets pissed when someone points out he also has green eyes

-Steve always combs his hair into complicated swirls

-The Greasers always play football together

-Soda is one of the only Greasers who never gets drunk

-He also doesn't smoke unless something is bothering him or he wants to look tuff

-Darry, on the other hand, never smokes because it would affect his perfect body which he is very proud of

-Darry is also proud of being smart and sensible

-Ponyboy is the heaviest smoker out of the Curtis family

-Johnny started smoking at 9 and Steve at 11

-Johnny would've run away from Tulsa if it weren't for the gang

-Soda gives killer massages

-Ponyboy's razor wasn't working while he had to dissect a frog so he just took out his knife

-Darry goes skiing with some of his old friends sometimes

-Cherry and Marcia barrel race often and are pretty good at it

-Soda used to ride in rodeos but after breaking a ligament, his dad made him quit

-Sometimes Soda and Steve let Ponyboy help them fix the cars at the DX

-Johnny is the most law-abiding of the gang, and didn't even carry a knife until the Socs jumped him

-Cherry has an older brother

-Ponyboy used to have a yeller cur dog

-Johnny's scar his from his temple to his cheekbone (it's huge and also hard to look at)

-Two-Bit often raises one eyebrow, and the gang associate the gesture with him

-The only time Johnny has been confident and not scared in his life, was when rescuing the kids in the church

-Johnny actually gets hurt because he pushed Ponyboy out first of the church

-Sodapop has a crazy sweet tooth

-The Curtis brothers all love chocolate

-Darry never locks the front door in case one of the gang need a place to stay

-Ponyboy once found Tim Shepard sitting on their couch reading the newspaper

-Ponyboy thinks that Two-Bit wouldn't have gone inside the church if he was there

-Two Bit wished that the one hurt was anybody but Johnny and that the gang would have still been able to get along had it been anyone else

-Darry once took an aerobatics course and taught all the Greasers everything he knew

-Soda and Two-Bit were doing aerobatics and then got arrested for disturbing the peace

-The Curtis gang are noted to be better at fighting than the Shepard gang

-Tim Shepard looked like a model from the magazines Ponyboy reads

-Ponyboy notes that sweat ran down Dally's face when Johnny died, but it was probably tears

let me paint you a picture.

Post canon Outsiders

Pony doesn't stay gold. Whatsoever. He gets messed up in rougher gangs. Makes bad friends. Starts fights. Gets into drugs. Starts going after socs instead of them going after him. He becomes the worst of the Shepard gang and then some. He disregards his future, doesn't give a crap. After all, if Johnny can't have one, if Dally can't have one, why should Pony get one? Besides, these... activities? They're the only way to forget, to numb the pain constantly coursing through Pony's body. Darry made him talk to a doctor about it before he got real messed up, and they called it "survivors guilt". Pony's doesn't care what it is, just knows that it ain't going away, and deep down, he knows he doesn't deserve for it to go away.

Soda can't let go of the Pony he once knew. He's still holding onto fragments of memories of a Pony who slept in their house every night, who stayed up late to finish homework, not pulling pranks or getting drunk. Of a Pony who would disappear for hours only for Soda to find him nestled in a corner, reading a book. Now he only found him in the holding cell looking bored after getting caught by the police. But Soda held onto those fragments like a potter to their works in a tornado (or something of the like) except the potter was delusional and all their pots were figments of their imagination.

And now let me add in I Bet on Losing Dogs by Mitski.

Soda who sees Pony going down this path, knowing he can't do anything about it, but can't help but rely on him for comfort. Can't help but bet on him and he knows that someday it will come back to bite him in the form of terrible grief.

Where I'll be looking in their eyes when they're down I'll be there on their side I'm losing by their side

Once Pony really crashes and burns, Soda will still be with him, because it's his brother. Soda defends Pony to Darry all day and all night because of this spark of hope that maybe, maybe some remnant of Pony is still in there. But eventually, he'll be losing right by Pony's side.

Soda who can't help but love Pony. Even after he comes home covered in blood that isn't his own, staring straight ahead with no shimmer of kindness or love left in those dull green gray eyes. Even after he tells Soda he's given up trying. Even after he yells and screams at Soda, just telling him to give up on him, that he isn't who he used to be, and he never will be.

Never again.

But Soda just looks into him and remembers how he was.
