Sea Link Project Moves Forward with Planning Approval

The Sea Link project has taken a major step forward as the Planning Inspectorate officially accepted National Grid’s development consent application. This acceptance marks an important milestone in the effort to modernize and enhance Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure. Sea Link is a proposed 138-kilometer electricity connection designed primarily as an offshore route, linking Pegwell Bay in Kent to a point on the Suffolk coast between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness.
The project will involve the installation of 122 kilometers of undersea cables and 14 kilometers of underground cables, both feeding into new converter stations at either end. Sea Link aims to address the rising demand for energy by efficiently transporting low-carbon and renewable electricity to homes and businesses across the region. It is a key component of The Great Grid Upgrade, National Grid’s largest investment in the UK electricity system in decades.
Next Steps in the Approval Process
With the development application now accepted, the Sea Link project enters the pre-examination phase. During this stage, members of the public, local communities, and stakeholders will have the opportunity to register as Interested Parties through the Planning Inspectorate’s website. Registration will enable them to actively participate in public hearings and provide feedback during the formal examination period.
The Planning Inspectorate will host a Preliminary Meeting to outline the process before conducting a detailed review of the project. Upon completion of the examination, the Inspectorate will submit its recommendation to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, who will ultimately determine whether the project can move forward. This structured process ensures that all voices are heard and environmental, social, and technical factors are carefully considered.

Third up is Island Navigator.
Unlike the previous two, Island Navigator continues to sail in the Waitematā. However, what makes this a blast from the past is the fact that Island Navigator was still in Subritzky Shipping Line colours.
New to SeaLink Kangaroo Island, she was bought over to run the Wynyard-Tryphena route as only 6 ferries had been included in the sale to SeaLink.
It seems SeaLink retained the Subritzky Shipping Line colours up until c. 2020, when it was replaced with SeaLink's own colours (see below).

Monday 9th December 2024
It was a long day on the Sealink Cat yesterday, and our late return to the old Homestead dictated a rather laid-back evening, snacking with SB and slumped watching Transporter 3; a familiar plot, and then an early night.
While we were entreated not to take anything from Whitsunday Island yesterday except photos, we nonetheless did by way of the silica, which might inadvertently clung to us or in hidden crevices there could be. Collectively, this, when accumulated carefully into a small pot, there was sufficient to clean in an eco-friendly way, Martine's jewelery. A well-known process around these parts, apparently. And very well it did perform for her. Sparkling as new now!
Beaches have been mentioned once or twice in this blog to date, and I do so again mindful firstly that it is hard to find anything original to write, but secondly, it may appear we have something of a fixation for them. After yesterday's high scoring Whitehaven Beach with its squeaky white silica sand, anything else would have you appear in the also run list. However, each Beach has it own merits. Whitehaven, for all its unique beauty, had the disadvantage of too many tourist boats disgorging people on to it for 2 hours at a time, whereas our Nelly Bay beach around the corner has no-one on it. We were there this morning for 2 hours, and on a beach that runs for several kilometres, we were literally the only people on it. It is a fantastic beach with beautiful views across the bay to feature tree clad uninhabited islands.
After lunch, we popped back again for a couple of hours. The tide by this time had come in, but still enough beach for everyone. Well, that is us. There were two people and two dogs further along this time, oh, and we spotted a couple of huge turtles and a couple of flying fish.These turtles must have been a couple of feet in length. One surfaced within feet of where Martine was swimming!
Showers then down to the Dingo Bay Hotel and the Dingo Pub to get a great sea food meal and a beer. We have really enjoyed our stay at Dingo Bay and once again be sorry to leave. The place is a small community centred around the pub, but very friendly and welcoming to outsiders. They genuinely seem to appreciate tourists in their town; a friendly wave as we have walked along the road to the hotel or beach. It's a great place; close enough to Airlie Beach, but far enough away to keep it just as it is, quiet, peaceful, ripe for development but resisting any attempt. The sea forms an important component in its success and attraction and is very much a place we could easily call home. Maybe one day we shall return.
A week here has flown by, it seems, and this is our last night before driving a couple of hours south to an inland place, Finch Hatton, which appears to come well recommended. We shall be staying this time in the Old Post Office.
ps. I report the sad passing of a kangaroo, cut down in the prime of life just outside our little house here, by way of a road traffic accident. Now, he must have been either the most accident prone kangaroo going or the most unlucky since there are only about 3 cars a day down this road! Either way, we miss him.

What does the site look like/feel like/sound like?
Wynyard Quarter is an amazing and vibrant space, filled with people laughing and strolling around, exploring the area. The sounds of conversation and laughter from the various food spots Wynyard has to offer, with the delicious smells of diverse cuisines. The sounds of people full of life skating and playing basketball, a youthful atmosphere as everyone makes the most of their day.
How do people move around the site? Interact with the site?
Visitors walk around sightseeing and simply enjoying the surroundings. It’s a space designed for exploring on foot, allowing you see the beautiful ocean views, restaurants, cafes, and its proximity to the city (CBD).
What is the purpose of the site?
The purpose of Wynyard Quarter is to be an open, modern area where people can stroll and engage in various activities whether it’s playing basketball, hanging out in the park, dining, or sightseeing as a tourist. It’s a place that offers complete bliss and immersion.
Do you have any personal experience or memories of the place?
I’ve always enjoyed Wynyard Quarter. Growing up, it was a modern space where I’d often play basketball and hang out on the playground. I spent a lot of time there since my mother worked at Sealink, the ferry company located in Wynyard Quarter. I still visit frequently, especially on Saturday evenings for the night markets. It’s the perfect time to grab some food and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
