Pan Kotsky
Mr. Cat
Pan Kotsky is the character of a Ukrainian Folk Tale. It's a story about an old cat who was left out in the wood because he could no longer catch mice. He met a lady fox who asked him to marry her, and knowing his anxieties about his abilities as a hunter, she hyped him up to all the forest folk. Due to a series of events, he solidifies in their eyes that he is a fearsome beast and is left alone.
Here are some progress photos of him from the initial tracing to washed and drying.
Above is the source. It is the title page of a Children's Opera written in Kyiv in 1945. This particular version is by Lysenko M.
I originally found a copy of this on Color Our Collection, which is a website that museums upload small coloring books to.
With the help of some very wonderful friends, I was able to discover the name of the illustrator. His name is Sergei Grigoriev, and while he has done other illustrations, he is best known for his paintings.

Tuchkov Buyan Park Competition
18 Dec 2014
Tuchkov Buyan Park in Saint Petersburg
Location: Saint Petersburg, Russia
Design: Mudrogelenko
The finalists of the International Competition for the Architectural Landscape Design Concept for the Tuchkov Buyan Park were announced in Saint Petersburg.
The results of the International Competition for the Architectural Landscape Design Concept for the Tuchkov Buyan Park were announced on September 18, 2020. The idea developed by Studio 44 (Russia, Saint Petersburg) in consortium with WEST 8 (The Netherlands, Rotterdam) was recognized as the best conception by an international jury. JV Vogt (Switzerland, Zurich) in consortium with Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland, Basel) and Khvoya (Russia, Saint Petersburg) have become the finalists.
“This competition is very important for us. During the last 2 days we were conducting the meeting of the international jury which were represented by the experts from Russia, Italy, France, Germany, USA, Switzerland and Great Britain. The organisation of the final jury’s meeting was unprecedentedly complex — it was held in online and offline format at the same time. Nevertheless, all jury members had equal access to competition’s materials. According to the requirements of the International Union of Architects (UIA) special attention was focused on confidentiality of competitors’ works. None of experts and jury members didn’t have information about names of the bureaus while the meeting, they evaluated all the concepts under numbers,”— said Denis Leontev, CEO of Strelka KB.
Preparation for the competition began in September 2019. The contest was developed on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation. It was initiated by the Government of Saint Petersburg. The DOM.RF Foundation is the organizer of the competition. The operator — Strelka KB, an urban consultancy.
“This was a hugely successful and well-run competition. The brief was excellent and encouraged thoughtful work on the part of all the participants. Most especially, I felt that the discussions were extremely balanced, bringing together international expertise and local knowledge in a very transparent and collegial way. The conversations and evaluations of all the jury members reflected a professionalism that was encouraged and supported by the organization of the competition procedures,” — commented Lawrence Barth, Professor of Urbanism at the Graduate School of the Architecture Association.
“We have been interested in the development of the territory for a long time. City planning has always been discussed regarding the regular planning and consistency principles. The city master plan which was proposed by Nikolay Baranov included the idea of central city park design along Malaya Neva river from Peter and Paul Fortress to the Gulf of Finland coastline. Today we discuss the significance of the landscape and its integration into a holistic system in an urban environment. The new era has begun, and if we should have contended with the territory development in the context of building, now we have available open areas. I would like to point out the high quality of the projects presented and give my gratitude to all the participants,” — said Vladimir Grigoryev, the Chairman of Urban Planning and Architecture Committee, the Chief Architect of Saint Petersburg.
There were 229 teams from 50 countries who applied for participation in the competition. Eight participants who were chosen to develop the conceptions included:
— Studio 44 (Russia, Saint Petersburg) and West 8 (The Netherlands, Rotterdam);
— Agence Ter (France) и Philippe Rahm architectes (Switzerland) in collaboration with Carlo Ratti Associati, Setec, Avesta and Aetc. Russian consultants: Kirill Mordukhaev, engineer, Tatiana Kokhanova, specialist in sustainable development, and Irina Borzykh, dendrology specialist;
