WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT TESTS FOR MEN ABOVE 60?
Introduction
It is important to know that regardless of age, individuals should undergo regular health check-ups to ensure that various body organs are functioning correctly, to screen for illnesses and to identify health concerns in advance. As individuals grow older, prioritizing regular health check-up becomes even more crucial, as ageing can increase susceptibility to various illnesses. Early detection through these check-ups is key for better management and improved health outcomes. This blog provides valuable insights into important tests for men above 60, focusing on their specific health needs.
Important Tests for Men Above 60
Health check-ups are essential for senior citizens to evaluate and maintain their overall well-being. The detail of common and important blood tests for men above 60 is described below.
Lipid Profile
A Lipid Profile screen test tracks the levels of several types of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can increase the risk of heart stroke and disease. By regularly monitoring lipid levels, senior men can assess their cardiovascular health and take necessary measures to manage cholesterol levels through medication or lifestyle changes.
HbA1c; Glycosylated Hemoglobin
The hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test is a blood examination that reveals the average blood sugar (glucose) level over the previous two to three months. This test plays a crucial role in managing and monitoring diabetes, a condition that becomes increasingly common with age. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels among men in this age group helps in the early detection and effective management of diabetes. Thus, lowering the risk of complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney issues, and nerve damage.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays an important role in immunity, bone health, and muscle strength. Deficiency of Vitamin D is commonly observed in senior men due to reduced sun exposure and age-related bodily changes. A Vitamin D test monitors the levels of this important nutrient and assists senior men in managing their Vitamin D intake through diet, sunlight exposure, or supplementation.
Complete Blood Count; CBC
A CBC test provides important information about white and red blood cells, haemoglobin, platelet count, and other components in the blood. This test plays a significant role in identifying medical conditions such as infections, clotting disorders, anaemia, and certain types of cancers. Regular CBC tests contribute to maintaining optimal health quality and detecting potential underlying health issues.
C- Reactive Protein, Cardio; hsCRP
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is particularly important for senior citizens to monitor due to its ability to detect inflammation in the body with greater sensitivity than the standard CRP test. This is important because inflammation can indicate underlying health issues, such as infection, injury, or surgery complications, which are more common in older people. Additionally, hsCRP levels can indicate the individual's risk of heart disease.
Rheumatoid Factor
The RA, also known as the Rheumatoid Arthritis factor test, is particularly relevant for men aged above 60 who face joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Higher levels of RA factor in the blood might affect Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune medical condition that affects the joints. Early detection is crucial for prevention, thereby reducing the chances of speeding up the illness and managing symptoms effectively.
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), Total
The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA Total) test is a blood test utilized for screening prostate cancer. PSA, a protein generated by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate gland, helps in this screening. Additionally, the test is valuable for tracking recurrence and treatment response in diagnosed prostate cancer cases. Elevated PSA levels may also indicate conditions like an enlarged or inflamed prostate.
Apolipoprotein B (APO B)
The serum Apolipoprotein B test assesses Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) levels in the bloodstream. Apo B is a protein involved in lipid metabolism and primarily linked to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, which can contribute to heart problems. By testing ApoB levels, doctors can see if someone is at risk for heart problems and suggest ways to keep their heart healthy.
9. Liver Function Test
The Liver Function test (LFT) checks the overall functioning of the liver. As we age, the liver’s efficiency in processing toxins and metabolizing medications tends to decline. Regular monitoring of bilirubin levels, liver enzymes, and other markers assists in the detection of liver illnesses such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver damage caused by alcohol or medication
Kidney Function Test
Kidney function tests (KFT) are a series of examinations that assess the health and performance of the kidneys. These assessments help in the diagnosis of kidney disease, monitor kidney function, and assist doctors in making informed about treatment choices.

I can't even check my blood pressure at home right now because cheap batteries from rexall ate through my blood pressure monitor that I have had for over 10 years...
So I have to estimate how fast my kidney's are actually processing things by how much I am peeing VS how high my blood pressure -feels-...
But actually the decrease in POTS symptoms over the past couple years, the getting gout every time I try taking a vitamin and even all the bone pain could all be from some level of kidney failure.
Which would make sense considering at some point during early post covid my complain to my doctor was that I hadn't peed in a week, hadn't pooped in two, and it felt like pressure was just building up in my abdomen.
My doctor and the hospital ignored that complaint until I slowly got better on my own... And didn't bother doing tests until the symptoms had already mostly lifted. Again.
But it may very well be my kidneys, and all the things I have been doing to help my liver and energy levels like having extra phosphorus, animals fats and proteins... Might all be very very bad for your kidneys.
So I am putting myself on a kidney failure diet, at least until the gout and bone pain go away, and monitoring for other symptoms [I mean I may still have occasional steak I kind of need the iron], but like... Without someone running tests I can't actually know how bad the problem is, but going to a walk in clinic about it and trying to convince them to run the tests I -actually- need run sounds a lot like adding errands to run when I don't even have the energy to go finish my groceries, for zero actual pay-off.
Regardless, know that I am on top of it and paying close attention anyway, since I am sure I will cause someone great concern by coming on here and being like "my bones won't stop hurting now"... Because my bones won't stop hurting now. I think high serum phosphorus levels might be fucking with the calcium in my bones again. I think everything is feeling like it's trying to break my forearms because the bones are actually fucked up right now.
Now I just have to balance doing what I need to do to support my liver with what I need to do not to tax my kidneys and honestly the answer might be to let myself get a bit jaundiced and prioritize my kidneys for a bit, the added anti-oxidant effect of bilirubin won't hurt my kidneys, it'll probably actually help protect them from damage.
So now the only animal fats I am going to eat for a while are from cream. The fats might not be great for my kidneys but I need the calcium and iodine and I don't want my liver going fully to shit... But I -do- need to buy more honey so I am not tempted to switch to refined sugar T~T which I don't normally eat much of at all. Going to try to get iodine from foods and not by having more salt. Going to -in fact- keep forgetting to salt my food like I have been lately.
Gee it would be so cool if I could just submit some blood tests for approval and my reasons for it and have a practitioner of some kind who's job it is to be like "sounds legit" and have a lab do them and send me the results. Free health care shouldn't mean needing someone's permission to know what's going on inside my body. Tell me what my serum phosphorus levels are, and also I want to be checked for chronic hepatitis still, and also while we're at it can we check my thyroid levels and my ana right now too? There has to be a way to get set up to test some of these things at home, right?

Stages of liver failure
Stages of acute liver failure
Acute liver failure is divided in to three categories. A hepatologist named O'Grady and his associates created the King's categorization in 1993; it is widely utilized in the United Kingdom. This classification allows for the subclassification of acute liver failure as
hyperacute liver failure, which occurs within 7 days of the onset of jaundice,
acute liver failure, which occurs between 1 and 4 weeks, and
subacute liver failure, which occurs between 5 and 12 weeks.
Stages of acute on chronic liver failure
Several studies have confirmed the utility of grading acute on chronic liver failure in aiding clinicians to determine prognosis. Three grades are used to categorize acute on chronic liver failure according to its severity:
Grade 1 acute on chronic liver failure is considered if there is presence of
Single kidney failure
Any combination of hepatic encephalopathy (brain illness due to impaired liver function) grade 1 or grade 2, single liver, coagulation, circulatory, or lung failure with a serum creatinine level between 1.5 and 1.9 mg/dL
brain failure with 1.5–1.9 mg/dl of serum creatinine.
Grade 2 acute on chronic liver failure is considered when there is a combination of two organs failure.
Grade 3 acute on chronic liver failure is considered when there is multiple organ failure.
Diagnosis of Liver Failure:
Medical History & Physical Exam: To assess symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, swelling, or confusion.
Blood Tests: Liver function tests (LFTs), INR, bilirubin, albumin, and liver enzymes.
Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to check liver structure and detect damage.
Liver Biopsy: Sometimes done to confirm the cause and extent of liver damage.
Additional Tests: To rule out infections, toxins, autoimmune conditions, or metabolic disorders.

7 Urgent Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore: When to Take an SGPT Test
Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body, silently performing over 500 vital functions. Yet, most people don’t think about it until something goes wrong. One of the key diagnostic tools for evaluating liver function is the SGPT (Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) test, also known as ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase). But when should you actually get tested?
This blog breaks down 7 critical symptoms that may indicate it's time to take an SGPT test. Ignoring these warning signs could lead to serious complications—so understanding them is your first step to protecting your health.
Tumblr media
Body
What Is an SGPT Test?
The SGPT test measures the level of ALT enzyme in your blood. High levels typically indicate liver damage or inflammation. Your liver releases ALT into your bloodstream when it's injured, making this test an early and effective indicator of problems such as fatty liver, hepatitis, or alcohol-related liver disease.
1. Persistent Fatigue and Weakness
Feeling drained even after a full night’s sleep? Chronic fatigue is one of the earliest and most overlooked signs of liver dysfunction. A study published by the American Liver Foundation found that fatigue affects nearly 50% of individuals with liver abnormalities.
Pro Tip: If exhaustion has become your norm, it’s time to check your liver function with an SGPT test.
2. Unexplained Weight Loss
Sudden weight loss, especially without diet or exercise changes, is a red flag. It could point to liver conditions like cirrhosis or hepatitis, which interfere with your metabolism.
3. Jaundice or Yellowing of the Skin/Eyes
Jaundice is one of the most visible signs of liver distress. The yellow pigment, bilirubin, builds up when the liver fails to process it effectively. If you or others notice yellowing of the eyes or skin, don’t delay—book an SGPT test immediately.
4. Nausea or Digestive Problems
Frequent nausea, bloating, or loss of appetite could signal liver inflammation. When your liver is overburdened, digestion slows, leading to GI discomfort.
5. Dark-Colored Urine
Dark yellow or brown urine without any changes in hydration often suggests liver problems. Elevated bilirubin in the blood, a sign of liver malfunction, may be the cause.
6. Pain or Discomfort in the Upper Right Abdomen
The liver is located in the upper right side of your abdomen. If you’re experiencing dull or sharp pain in this region, especially after meals or alcohol consumption, get tested.
7. High-Risk Lifestyle or Medical History
If you consume alcohol frequently, use certain medications long-term (e.g., statins or anti-TB drugs), or have a history of hepatitis, regular SGPT testing is essential—even if you don’t have symptoms.
Did you know? Up to 30% of liver disease cases show no symptoms until severe damage occurs. Proactive testing can save your liver.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to take the SGPT test? Any time you notice symptoms or have a high-risk profile. It's usually a fasting test, so early morning is ideal.
How often should I take it? If you have risk factors, every 6–12 months. For general screening, once a year is often enough.
What is a normal SGPT range? Typically, 7 to 56 units per liter of blood. However, normal ranges may vary slightly between labs.
Conclusion
Ignoring subtle signs your liver sends can have long-term consequences. An SGPT test is affordable, accessible, and effective in detecting early liver damage. If any of the 7 symptoms mentioned resonate with you, don't wait. Your health is your greatest investment—protect it with timely action.

Liver Enzymes Test Explained – What SGPT/SGOT Mean
Tumblr media
The liver is one of the most important organs in your body. It performs hundreds of functions, including filtering toxins, producing bile, and supporting digestion and metabolism. When your liver is under stress or not functioning properly, certain enzymes in your blood can increase. Two of the most common enzymes tested are SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST). In this blog, we will break down what these enzymes mean, why your doctor might suggest this test, and what the results indicate.
What is a Liver Enzymes Test?
A liver enzymes test is a type of blood test used to evaluate the health of your liver. It measures specific proteins (called enzymes) that the liver releases into your blood. When liver cells are damaged, these enzymes leak into your bloodstream. The most commonly tested liver enzymes are:
SGPT (ALT) – Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase
SGOT (AST) – Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase
Why Do Doctors Recommend a Liver Enzymes Test?
Your doctor may ask for a liver enzymes test if you show symptoms of liver problems or are at risk due to lifestyle or existing health conditions. Some common reasons include:
Fatigue or weakness
Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
Abdominal pain or swelling
Dark urine or pale stools
Alcohol consumption
Hepatitis (A, B, or C)
Obesity or fatty liver
Long-term medication usage
Diabetes or high cholesterol
What is SGPT (ALT)?
SGPT, also known as ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase), is an enzyme mainly found in the liver. It plays a role in converting proteins into energy for liver cells. When liver cells are damaged or inflamed, SGPT leaks into the bloodstream.
Normal SGPT Levels:
For men: 7 to 56 units per liter of blood
For women: 7 to 45 units per liter
What Does High SGPT Mean?
High SGPT levels may indicate:
Liver inflammation (Hepatitis)
Fatty liver disease
Alcohol-related liver damage
Liver infection or injury
Side effects of medications
Obesity-related liver stress
Sometimes, even intense physical activity or certain supplements can temporarily raise SGPT levels.
What is SGOT (AST)?
SGOT, also known as AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase), is an enzyme found not just in the liver, but also in the heart, kidneys, muscles, and brain. So, while it can point to liver damage, it may also indicate problems in other organs.
Normal SGOT Levels:
For men: 8 to 48 units per liter of blood
For women: 8 to 43 units per liter
What Does High SGOT Mean?
High SGOT levels may be due to:
Liver damage or cirrhosis
Heart disease or recent heart attack
Muscle injuries
Pancreatitis
Alcohol abuse
Use of certain drugs or supplements
If both SGPT and SGOT are elevated, it’s more likely to be a liver-related issue.
SGPT vs SGOT – What's the Difference?
Feature
SGPT (ALT)
SGOT (AST)
Location
Mainly in the liver
Liver, heart, kidneys, muscles, brain
Specificity
More liver-specific
Less liver-specific
Indicates
Liver damage
Liver, heart, or muscle damage
Normal Range
7–56 U/L
8–48 U/L
Conclusion: If only SGPT is high, it's more likely to be liver-specific. If both are high, the doctor may run further tests.
Other Liver Tests Often Done Together
To get a full picture of liver health, doctors may also recommend:
ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase) – Linked to bile ducts
GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase) – Linked to alcohol use or bile problems
Bilirubin – Indicates liver’s ability to process waste
Albumin and Total Protein – Reflects liver's protein production
PT/INR – Measures blood clotting, another liver function
What to Do if SGPT/SGOT Are High?
If your test results show high liver enzymes, don’t panic. A one-time elevation doesn’t always mean serious disease. Here's what you should do:
1. Follow-Up Testing
Your doctor may repeat the test after a few weeks or recommend imaging (ultrasound/CT scan) to check for liver fat, fibrosis, or tumors.
2. Lifestyle Changes
Avoid alcohol completely
Maintain a healthy diet (low-fat, high-fiber)
Exercise regularly
Control blood sugar and cholesterol
Stay hydrated
3. Review Medications
Some over-the-counter drugs like paracetamol, or supplements like bodybuilding products, can raise liver enzymes.
4. Monitor Regularly
If you have a chronic condition like diabetes, high cholesterol, or obesity, make liver function tests part of your routine health checks.
When to See a Doctor Immediately
Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
Severe abdominal pain
Swelling in legs or abdomen
Confusion or mood changes
Dark-colored urine or light-colored stools
These signs may indicate serious liver issues and need immediate attention.
Final Thoughts
The liver is a silent warrior – it works 24/7 and rarely complains until it's seriously damaged. That’s why regular check-ups, especially liver enzyme tests, are essential for early detection and prevention.
Understanding your SGPT and SGOT levels can give you valuable insights into your liver’s health. Whether you’re dealing with symptoms, managing a chronic condition, or just doing a preventive health check, this simple blood test can help you stay one step ahead.

Reading And Interpreting Your Liver Function Test - A Guide To Commonly Used Liver Tests
Tumblr media
The liver is a vital organ responsible for numerous metabolic functions in the body, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and bile production. Monitoring liver health is crucial for early detection and management of liver diseases. One of the primary tools for assessing liver function is the Liver Function Test (LFT). In this guide, we will delve into the commonly used liver tests, how to interpret the results, and what they indicate about your liver health.
Understanding Liver Function Tests
Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that provide valuable insights into the health and function of the liver. These tests measure various enzymes, proteins, and substances in the blood that are indicative of liver health.
Key components of Liver Function Tests
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT): Elevated levels suggest liver damage, commonly caused by conditions like hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): Similar to ALT, elevated AST levels indicate liver damage but may also be elevated in conditions affecting the heart or muscles.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Elevated ALP levels may suggest liver or bone disease.
Total Bilirubin: Increased levels may indicate liver dysfunction or obstruction of bile ducts.
Albumin and Total Protein: These are measures of liver synthetic function; decreased levels may suggest liver disease.
What are the causes of abnormal liver function test results?
Causes of abnormal liver function test results can vary and may indicate different underlying conditions. Some common causes include:
1. Build-up of Fat in the Liver:
* Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can lead to abnormal liver function tests, especially in overweight or obese individuals.
2. Liver Inflammation and Damage:
* Infections, toxic substances like alcohol or certain medications, and immune conditions can cause liver inflammation and subsequent abnormal test results.
3. Liver Overworking:
* When the liver is under stress from processing medicines or toxic substances like alcohol or paracetamol, it can result in abnormal liver function tests.
4. Bile Duct Blockage:
* Blockages in the bile ducts, such as by gallstones, can lead to abnormal liver function test results.
5. Liver Conditions and Diseases:
* Underlying conditions like Wilson's disease, haemochromatosis, or Gilbert's syndrome can affect liver function and result in abnormal test values.
6. Liver Injury:
* Physical injury to the liver, trauma, or presence of abscesses or tumors within the liver can cause abnormal liver function tests.
7. Medications and Supplements:
* Certain medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and traditional medicines can also impact liver function test results.
8. Other Factors:
* Factors like high alcohol intake, viral infections, autoimmune conditions, metabolic liver diseases, heart problems, and tumors in the liver can contribute to abnormal liver function tests.

Chronic Liver Disease With a number of functions -- including detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of chemicals that are necessary for digestion -- the human liver is vital. It is reddish brown and has four unequal sized lobes; usually weighs about 3.5 pounds and is the largest gland in the human body. It is located just below the diaphragm in the body's right upper abdominal quadrant. The liver plays a major role in the body's metabolic processes as well -- glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, some hormone production. The liver produces bile -- which is an alkaline compound that helps in digestion by changing fat (lipid) molecules to a more digestible format. The liver's detoxification and synthesis of micronutrients are vital -- short-term liver dialysis is possible, but a person cannot exist without a functioning liver (Virtual Liver, 2008). Cirrhosis of the Liver Cirrhosis is the result of chronic liver disease in which liver tissue is replaced by care tissue of fibrosis. The most common causes of cirrhosis are alcoholism, hepatitis B and C, and fatty liver disease (Mayo Clinic, 2010). Symptoms of Cirrhosis Ascites -- Fluid retention in the abdominal cavity, one of the most common complications. Causes risk of infection and poor quality of life. Jaundice -- yellowing of the skin, mucus membranes or the eyes caused by an overproduction of bilirubin in the blood due to partial liver shutdown. Liver Encephalopathy -- confusion, altered levels of consciousness and psychotic episodes, even coma, as a result of liver failure and toxin buildup. Abnormal Nerve Function -- nerve endings fire uncontrollably or are painful. Portal Hypertension -- high blood pressure in the portal vein that delivers blood to the liver (Bacon and Bisceglie, 2000). Causes of chronic liver disease Hepatitis -- Hepatitis B and C. are infections of the liver that cause inflammation and cell death over time. Both shut down critical functions of the liver. Drug Abuse/Chemical Exposure -- Drugs, chemicals and alcohol block the normal metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates and kill liver cells. Bile Duct Obstruction -- starves the liver of needed blood, or causes back up of bile and infection Autoimmune Disease -- results in inflammation and scaring of the liver. Diabetes -- insulin imbalance causes breakdown and malfunction of liver function. Malnutrition -- Without adequate food to digest and materials to detoxify, the liver function shuts down and eventually cells starve (Bacon and Bisceglie). Diagnostic Testing- Lab Tests -- There are a number of lab tests that are done to provide clinical data regarding cirrhosis: AST and ALT tests show elevation in both chemicals. Gamma-glutamyl transferase -- high in chronic liver disease Billirubin -- elevates as cirrhosis progresses Albumin -- levels fall as liver function declines Globulins -- increased due to movement away from liver Serum Sodium -- high because free water is unable to process correctly. Fibrio Test -- uses six blood serum tests to generate a score that is correlated with the degree of liver damage; same prognostic value as a liver biopsy, but far less invasive. Liver Biopsy -- A liver biopsy is done by inserting a hollow needle into the core of the liver and taking a small sample to be analyzed under a microscope. Usually this is done to see if there is cellular damage to the liver. CAT Scan -- Computed Tomography is a medical imaging procedure in which a computer based "image" of the organ is created so that the physician has a three dimensional view of the organ in question. Cholangiography Ultrasound -- used routinely in the evaluation of cirrhosis; sound or elastic waves are bounced off tissues in a non-invasive procedure. This shows irregularities in shape and scaring (Dickerson, 2006). Treatment Options Nutritional Based -- Balanced diet including an excess of fresh vegetables; broccoli and green leafy vegetables especially; plenty of complex carbohydrates and avoid simple sugars; adequate protein but not excessive -- proteins should be from plant, rather than meat, sources. Replacement of certain fats and oils in cooking if the liver is unable to digest; restrict sodium. Avoidance of Toxins or Substances - Abstain from alcohol, avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, avoid tobacco or other substances that may damage the liver (certain drugs and pharmaceuticals that are metabolized by the liver). Vitamin Supplementation -- Antioxidant vitamins (C, D, E, B complex) as well as herbal remedies like Milk Thistle (Silymarin). Unlike many other naturopathic compounds, Milk Thistle seems to have the backing of the scientific community, and has certainly been part of robust academic studies over the past 2-3 decades. In clinical trials, silymarin is typically dosed in amounts ranging from 420-480 mg/day in two to three divided doses. However, higher doses have been studied, up to 600mg per day in the treatment of Type II diabetes and up to 1200mg per day for chronic hepatitis C Optimal dosages have not yet been established (Huseini, et.al., 2006). In general, Milk thistle is believed to remedy liver disease, diabetes, blood pressure ratio, and even cholesterol modification. Mild gastrointestinal distress is the most common adverse effect reported, with similar incidents as the placebo. A laxative effect for milk thistle has also been infrequently reported (Greenlee, et.al. 2007). Management of complications -- Laxatives are often used to decrease risk of constipation; anti-biotics are prescribed for infections, medications can help with itching; sometimes viral drugs such as interferon or corticosteroids are used (Nutrition and Cirrhosis, 2010; WebMD, 2011). Baby’s Yellow Skin? Causes of Newborn Jaundice
https://womenworldmagazine.com/babys-yellow-skin-causes-of-newborn-jaundice/
Baby’s Yellow Skin? Causes of Newborn Jaundice
What is Newborn Jaundice?
Jaundice in newborns, also known as neonatal jaundice, is a common condition, caused by hyperbilirubinemia (excess production of serum bilirubin). Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment formed in the liver by the normal breakdown of old red blood cells (RBCs).
Neonatal jaundice is characterized by turning the infant’s skin and eye color to yellowish and it is the most common cause of readmission for newborn babies.
What are the Causes of Newborn Jaundice?
Elevation in bilirubin in newborns may be due to several reasons:
Their liver may not be fully developed, especially among preterm newborns, therefore, the metabolism of bilirubin would be slower.
Premature babies may have feeding and digesting difficulties, resulting in insufficient milk intake.
Newborns have a shorter lifespan of RBCs, and higher concentration of RBBs, leading to a higher production rate of bilirubin than adults.
They may have delayed first tar-like stools (meconium), resulting in increased intestinal reabsorption of bilirubin.
Sickle cell anemia may create abnormal shapes of red blood cells.
ABO or Rh incompatibility between the mother and baby, resulting in increased breakdown of the baby’s RBCs, thus elevated bilirubin levels. This type needs medical intervention. The sooner the treatment, the better the results are.
Other causes include medical conditions like rubella, cystic fibrosis, and hypoxia.
What are the Types of Newborn Jaundice?
1. Physiological Jaundice:
Physiological Jaundice is the most common type, especially in the first week of life. The newborn’s immature liver is often the cause of this type, resulting in excess bilirubin. However, it is mild, transient, and resolves without treatment. It usually resolves on its own when the liver matures without causing any complications.
2. Breastfeeding Jaundice:
This type of jaundice occurs in neonates that are breastfed. It usually presents during the first one to two weeks after birth and often resolves spontaneously, however, it may persist for 8 to 12 weeks of life.
The etiology of breast milk jaundice is not well known, nevertheless, it may occur due to reasons in the breast milk itself. Also, genetic mutations in the newborn may be present. Insufficient intake of breast milk and dehydration can also be risk factors, as well. It is recommended to continue breastfeeding to reduce its risk.
3. Breast Milk Jaundice:
This type differs from breastfeeding jaundice and occurs in well-fed newborns, often after the second weeks of life, and may last for a few weeks. It is usually harmless. The mechanism leading to breast milk jaundice is poorly understood; it may be due to substances in the mother’s milk that increase intestinal reabsorption of bilirubin.
How is Newborn Jaundice Diagnosed?
Physical examination of signs includes checking the baby’s skin and eye color changing to yellow within the first 72 hours of birth.
Blood levels of bilirubin must be tested through a bilirubinometer and a blood sample.
How is Newborn Jaundice Treated?
In most cases, neonatal jaundice resolves spontaneously. Mild hyperbilirubinemia often returns to normal as the newborn’s liver completes development. Additionally, continuous breastfeeding encourages bowel movement, which helps eliminate excess bilirubin.
Phototherapy (light therapy) is commonly used in cases of high or persistent elevation in bilirubin levels. It is a method of treatment using ultraviolet light on the baby’s skin to help break down bilirubin,  usually taking one to two days.
In rare cases, blood transfusion may be recommended if phototherapy does not work and bilirubin levels need to be reduced quickly.
