Python Sets
Introduction In previous post, we talked about the concept of python tuples. In this post, we will understand the concept of Python Set. In Python, a set is an unordered collection of unique elements. It is defined using curly braces {} or the set() constructor. Sets are mutable, meaning you can add or remove elements from them. However, unlike lists or tuples, sets cannot have duplicate…

This is what I feel like when I get a notification for @need-him-pregnant-poll
"Darling, Julian made it to the next round. Garak? Let me see. Yes, yes. Looks like he's still in too. Kirk? Don't be ridiculous now, love! Of course he's still in. Don't you remember Amok Time?"

Would you mind talking at all about steampunk as a genre? I strongly feel like for it to properly become a genre, more than an aesthetic, it needs to shed the historical milieu of being in 18th-19th century, but the most that people ever do with it is place it in China or something, which is great, but I'm convinced, falls short of its potential.
My apocryphal understanding of the origins of Steampunk (and understand that this isn't my wheelhouse, so I'm going to be talking at least a little out my ass for the rest of this post) is that a lot of it can be traced to William Gibson's 1990 novel The Difference Engine- where the point-slash-gag was to transfer well-understood cyberpunk tropes into a historical milieu, to demonstrate that Scramble-for-Africa participants and the Dutch East India company would not be significantly better behaved than 1980s-flavored megacorps if they were in possession of anachronistically powerful computing technology. That Cyberpunk was about hegemony and how advanced technology can be used to reinforce or subvert that hegemony, and that if you were hung up on the surface level aesthetics of leather jackets and cyberspace, or little details like "does this technology actually remotely make sense," you were missing the point by a mile.
If you strip out the specificity of the time period, there frankly isn't a lot left- you're back to cyberpunk, or dieselpunk, or atompunk, or any of the other decade-linked sub-breeds. There are a lot of steampunk works that run with the original idea that giving 19th-century great powers the keys to a mech would be politically catastrophic - often in conversation with turn of the century seminal science fiction like Wells or Verne- and there are also a lot that reproduce the original criticism of cyberpunk by leaning into the aesthetics of airships and brassy robotics without giving as much thought to the political dimensions. If you're just gluing gears onto a tophat, you aren't necessarily doing it wrong but you're certainly doing it superficially. What are those gears doing

just watched the barbie movie everyone was discoursing about last year and I can't help but feel like a lot of the problems in its execution could have been avoided if the kid character's arc had been about learning to embrace girly stuff as an act of rebellion against the adultification of teen girls while barbie went full butch transmasc
#deerchatter#i know why they didn't do that obvs the writers haven't a fucking clue what a feminism is and the bosses prefer it that way#but it's fun to think about what a good version of the premise could have looked like. there were interesting pieces on the board#the kid character could have been interesting if her arc had been about rejecting barbie bc of increasing awareness of the association#between femininity and weakness. but in wanting to gain respect she started acting and dressing like a young woman because she's at that age#where girls begin to be rewarded for being a more subdued and quote-unquote natural kind of feminine.#she could have become friends with barbie as a symbolic way to heal her inner child#meanwhile barbie takes the you-can-be-anything message to its logical extreme and decides what she wants to be is the one thing mattel will#never let her be: gender non-conforming#these 2 character arcs and where they intersect could have told the same story much better i think#emphasis on personal choice/growing up/social rebellion/embracing what will really make you happy#while also covering multiple ways to handle gendered expectations. pick out the parts you like or throw the whole gender out. both r good!#anyway i have to admit this movie was disappointing. i knew it wasn't gonna be woke but i thought it would still be a bit more fun ....#was hoping for a guilty pleasure kind of experience but even setting aside that hard thematic fumble it's underwhelming :(

.....I need to amuse myself through act 1a and I will stretch out the question of 'okay so can we all agree Baluran is at least a demigod of some kind?' which Ilz mostly raises to distract from anyone noticing how little he's said about himself and to fuck with Wyll, whom he finds endearing when he goes off fanboying about it.

what’s going on at the core of dust is
selby: knows the rules and does everything she can to follow them
alesa: doesn’t know the rules and doesn’t care that she doesn’t know
pathia: doesn’t know the rules but mostly ends up taking actions that conform to them anyway
quirin: knows the rules and uses this to break them more effectively

re ur tags on "define lists in parallel and zip them" its cuz these are computer science terms, computer science is full of these its really awesome
I was guessing this was a CompSci term (lovingly thinks of zip folders but there's probably lots that I'm missing due to: CompSci not my area of expertise even remotely)
What are some other good CompSci terms feel free to share!

I feel like the ninth doctor would get on with Miles O’Brian
i do too!! i think they'd both appreciate the other's ability to sit quietly both in moments of great joy and sorrow. nine is comparably a doctor of few words and i feel like both of them have a gravity that the other would see and respect.
also they're both people who work with their hands, they both have a working class feel to them (miles comes from a union family; a lot of what chris eccelston brought to the part is his own background as a working class person) in spaces where that isn't always a good thing and i think they'd feel a solidarity over that.
