Douglas E. Waymire

Douglas E. Waymire, 61, of Poland Street, Swoyersville, died on July 31, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family after a 3-year courageous battle of Pancreatic Cancer.

Born in Hawaii on April 6, 1963, he was the son of the late Eugene and Marian Ziskosky Waymire. He graduated from Westside Tech.

He was employed in the grocery industry for many years. He was formerly employed by Luzerne County Building and Grounds. He resided in Swoyersville for the past 54 years.

He and his wife Elizabeth (Beth) would have celebrated their 33rd anniversary on September 14, 2024.

He was the most loving husband, father, uncle and poppy anyone could have asked for and will be missed by all who knew him. His four granddaughters were the light of his life. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Nascar fan. His most recent favorite thing was going to the Grille and Saturday pizza with his brother-in-law Larry’s family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Edward Napierkowski.

Doug is survived by his wife of 33 years, the former, Elizabeth (Beth) Napierkowski; children, Caitlin Fritz (Bradley), Benton and Holly Hodgson (Justin) Sweet Valley; granddaughters, Lynzee, Kaylee, Brynlee and Maddison; sister Debbie Tressa (Joe), Swoyersville, Mother-in-law Dorothy Napierkowski, Wilkes-Barre, Brother-in-law, Edward Napierkowski (Rae), Shavertown and Larry Napierkowski (Christine) Shavertown. Numerous nieces and nephew.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Galasso and staff, Allied Hospice Care for making Doug comfortable at home until his passing

More Manhattan Mysteries Underground

Conspiracy theorists speak of tunnels beneath Manhattan that house secrets far more sinister than enclaves of homeless people. And the groups behind these secret tunnels and their nefarious purposes are two favorites of the conspiracy crowd: the federal government and that not-so-secret society the Masons. The Masons are a fraternal organization with branches throughout the world, and many believe that their powerful upper-level members are also involved in a number of convert conspiracies. 

In an issue of Shavertown magazine published in the fall of 1981, an author named R.L. Blain-Sanders claimed to know the location of an enormous triangular set of tunnels set hundreds of feet below the surface of Manhattan. The author contended that this was a deeply secret meeting ground used by a Masonic lodge to plan its most shadowy operations. The author’s claim has become famous among conspiracy theorists, although it has never been verified or followed up on. 

Other strange caverns have been discovered or are rumored to exist beneath New York City. During the reconstruction of East River Park, where Houston Street meets the FDR Drive, Con Ed had to halt construction after drilling into a two-hundred-foot-deep tunnel below the north end of the park. The reason for the existence of this tunnel was never discovered. The tunnel’s entrance was resealed by the time the park’s construction was completed in 2004. 

A number of well-known Manhattan landmarks are also rumored to house tunnel entrances. The Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine, at 110th and Amsterdam Avenue, is said to be one such place. Supposedly, the church’s basement contains an entrance to the vast system of interconnected tunnels that are used by an occult group for some dark purpose. Whether this is the same system of tunnels purportedly used by the Masons is unknown. 

There are also rumors that a number of subbasements exist beneath the Empire State Building. These are supposed to be the homes of hidden federal government offices. Apparently, they go deep below the surface to connect with a set of subterranean tunnels that allow those un the know to travel throughout the city without ever appearing aboveground. 

While many stories of secret tunnels seem far-fetched, there have been some discoveries over the years that support them. During an excavation, the remnants of the wall for which Wall Street was named were discovered many layers aboveground. And keep in mind that the first subway was a pneumatic tube built completely in secrecy by one Alfred Beach. (He was attempting to demonstrate the practicality of “pneumatic dispatch.”) This is the city that has a long-held tradition of doing secret things underground, out of sight of the surface dwellers going about their business above.

William A.T. Alles

William A.T. Alles, 87, of Shavertown passed away on May 31, 2024, at Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, after a fall at his house.

Born in Kingston, he was the son of the late George Sr., and Antoinette Giovino Alles. He graduated from Kingston High School and served in the U.S.  Navy during the Korean Conflict where he accomplished the rank of Lt.

Bill worked at the Business his father founded, George J. Alles Jeep Dealership, and later owned and operated Snap-on Tools on the Dallas Highway. During the flood he worked for the Post Coach to get housing for people affected.

His wife of 58 years the former, Rose Ann Belletri, preceded him in death in 2022. Also preceding him were his brother, George II; sisters, Ruth Holvey and Catherine Schuler.

He was a member of Saint Therese’s Church, Shavertown. Bill was an avid reader of history books.

Surviving is his daughter, Amy Ann Alles, Wilkes-Barre; granddaughter, Brittney; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Therese’s Church, 64 Davis Street, Shavertown, on June 11, Tuesday at 11 A.M. The interment will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Wyoming.

Arrangements entrusted to Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc., Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, if desired, can be made to Trucksville Dog Hospital, 1070 N. Memory Hwy., Shavertown, 18705, in memory of “ Arligh’s Angel Fund” for an animal in need.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Meadows Nursing Center for their fine care, especially the staff for room 218.
