7/15/23.
Soft Science (Sacramento, California) combine indie pop with a shoegazey instrumentation. I can't help but think of Say Sue Me or Stars on Fire. And speaking of Sacramento, there's a bit of Tiger Trap happening here. This is being released by Shelflife, Spinout Nuggets and Fastcut Records.
Our good friend Eric turned me onto another Sacramento band - The Baddest Beams. They don't have a physical release (yet). Kind of reminds me - lyrically at least - of Black Country, New Road.
The Sacramento music scene is just like the heat dome currently hovering over it - hot, hot, hot!

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at grocery supply chain issues in Europe. Empty Supermarket Shelves in Germany As western Europe begins a winter with scant fuel: Empty shelves as German supermarkets resist price hikes. An excerpt: “With German inflation running at a record 10 percent, supermarket giants are pushing back against what they see as unreasonable price increases by some of the world’s best-known brands. Food multinationals argue that their manufacturing costs have risen on the back of soaring energy and transport costs, in part because of the war in Ukraine. But retailers in Europe’s top economy say they are protecting customers’ purchasing power at a difficult time, and that price hikes of up to 30 percent in some cases are overblown.” Supermarket Shelves Picked Bare in England The London Times reports: Supermarket shelves picked bare as bargain hunters shop around. And here is a related news piece: British Grocery Stores Are Stocking Empty Shelves with Cardboard Cutouts of Food. JWR’s Comment: Ay, ay, ay… Tesco no tengo. Que lastima! Mixing Your Own Lidocaine Reader M.M. wrote: “This is just informational. I’m not giving any medical advice. But this might be interesting for folks. As I understand it, 1% lidocaine has a limited shelf life. It is basically lidocaine powder mixed with 0.9% normal saline. 1% is the typical concentration we use for procedures and surgeries.  Thus, 1 g of powder in 100 cc of saline. I believe the powder does not have similar shelflife limitations. I personally stock a fair amount of the powder, which I purchased over-the-counter online without a prescription. Mine came in a mylar bag hermetically sealed. It was fairly inexpensive and I bought 250 grams. Honestly, I don’t recall exactly where I purchased it, but a quick search shows numerous vendors. One can always make 0.9% normal saline up on the fly, with salt and sterile water by weight, and make the solution. Keep in mind that if you screw up the dilution, it can cause serious heart arrhythmias and potentially death.  That is, not recommended except for as a last resort. Again, this is informational and academic only. I’m not providing medical advice. Thought you might find it interesting.  Something that could be potentially useful in the event that modern medicine is not available to you.” Google’s Election Campaign Tampering Google Caught Manipulating Search, Buries GOP Campaign Sites in 83% of Top Senate Races. Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Rattles S.F. Bay Area Reader H.L. sent us this: Magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattles San Francisco Bay Area, the largest to strike the region in years. The piece begins: “A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, shaking buildings and marking the strongest quake the region has seen in eight years.” Lawsuit Might Spell the End of Internet Archive Publishers, Internet Archive Ready for Summary Judgment Hearing in Book Scan Case. Less Than 1 in 100M Chance COVID Has Natural Origin From vlogging commentator Matt Christiansen: New Study: Less Than 1 in 100M Chance COVID Has Natural Origin | Fauci-Funded Scientists Deny. 21 States Oppose Covid Vaccine Mandates in Schools 21 States Where the CDC’s Push to Get Covid Vaccines Mandated in Schools is ‘Dead-on-Arrival’. EU Policies Destroying Energy Sources in Midst of Crisis EU countries agree to hike climate change target next year.  JWR’s Comments: Western Europe is in its worst shortage of liquid fuels since the Second World War,.And now the EU member nations are scheming ways to “reduce greenhouse gasses” compounding their energy deficit. What absolute insanity!
Pandemic, Russian Threats Prompt Swedish Preppers A video news segment on the left-wing PBS: Pandemic, Russian threats prompt Swedish doomsday preppers. — You can send your news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail or via our Contact form.) Thanks!

Los Angeles, CA -- Always You (fka Ablebody) will be releasing their new album Bloom Off The Rose on July 16 via Shelflife Records / Discos de Kirlian. Last week, they shared their new single “Crimson Red,” a sweet, reflective track that spans just under 4.5 minutes long. From the gentle sways of the vocals to the steadiness of the dreams, Always You creates mellow instrumental layers that gives “Crimson Red” the perfect glimmer of hope. There’s a certain soft, rosiness to the track that gives it an indulgent dreaminess that you can’t help but love.
On the track, Always You explains "'Crimson Red' is a song about the push and pull of expectations and the unhealthy ways we manage them. It grapples with the narratives we craft and the barriers we put up between us to avoid the fear of vulnerability. Uncertainty can bring about impulses to sabotage and bring clarity to a situation by putting it to the test. This song is about bravery and taking a chance on love, carrying the weight of two and loudly celebrating the beauty the other can no longer see.”

5/6/23.
Over two years ago, we posted about Athens, Greece band Youth Valley. They had released a 7" on Greek label Make Me Happy Records. The single did well, and now here's Youth Valley releasing a full album on both Make Me Happy and U.S. label Shelflife.
This is still great jangle indie in the vein of The Dears, The Smiths and Northern Portrait. While you're at Shelflife, be sure to listen to The National Honor Society. It gives off similar vibes and sounds to Youth Valley.

Throwback Thursday #46!- V/A- Pop American Style (March Records, 1996)
Tumblr media
By the mid-90’s the indie pop scene was bursting worldwide with new bands seemingly popping up everywhere, issuing new 7” singles every day. The American scene was no different with bands all over the place and compilations of all shapes and sizes (I even issued my own compilation, Popular World comp, on my very short-lived Sky Blue Records imprint in 2000).
Jack “Skippy” McFadden’s March Records label had been going for a few years by this point and he had released some truly fine stuff (that Holiday debut is still one of my faves) so he threw his hat in with a comp of his own. But this wasn’t just any old comp, this one was a 2-disc set (with K-Tel being an influence) of too many great songs to name, finding bands in just about every outpost of America.
The record starts with Shoestrings and their impossibly lovely “Summer Days” (they released a very fine sophomore album a few years ago on Shelflife) and then right into the Rocketship classic, “Hey Hey Girl” then onto the Cuddlecore (not my term) of Cub (with “Howard”) and on to the suave pop of the previously-mentioned Holiday with “It’s Only Love.”
40 songs spread out over two discs with more great cuts coming via Heartworms (a side project of Archie from Velocity Girls), Allen Clapp  his Orchestra, My Favorite (with the brilliant “Go Kid Go”) and Poundsign with the superb “Starry Night.”
Who else? further, Vehicle Flips, Holiday Flyer, Aberdeen, the Push Kings, Elf Power, Tullycraft and too many more. It really did seem like the comp to end all comps and I played it for days/months.
If you missed this the first time around then head on over to Discogs where you can find a copy for a very reasonable price
**side note- a few years later Skippy released Moshi Moshi: Pop International Style with a 2-cd compilation of bands, as the title suggests, from the USA and around the globe. Not quite the eye-opener that this comp was but still pretty damn good.
