Eyeshield 21 sure has many good character developments and there are many unique characters inside the story but for the story wise and conflict variation I can't help but admit that OG Dorabase is so much better.

I don't like the way Inagaki and Murata-sensei rushed the story in ES21 especially in the Youth World Championship. The German team and that German player with amazing memory has so much potential, and he's the only rival who is not being a total asshole. I'm fine if they rush the battle against Russia and Militaria but it's a shame that the mangakas didn't extend the German team part.

Not to mention that there are too much backstories and the whole "talented and non-talented" things, or that Sena is forced to take the Eyeshield 21 title by defeating Yamato like it's even important anymore now that he had the courage to always keep going. (And ppl complaining for too much backstories in Fairy Gone smh). The only thing that makes the backstory a worthy being is the Bandou Spiders' struggle and Hakushuu Dinosaurs' interesting profile - that they're still human despite looking like a controversional team at the first look; Gaou with his utmost respect to his rivals despite having the power-crazy attitude and sometimes lack of common sense, and Marco who is willing to sacrifice anything for American Football (also Marco x Maria dynamic bcs that's the best sh*t I've ever seen in this series, even better that Hirumamo or my other OTPs).

While Dorabase has many weird secret techiques and using many gadgets, but the story itself is a masterpiece: while there's a rivalry between Kuroemon and Shiroemon, they're not always being the ones who are given the spotlights. They, with other characters too, also face different challenges in World Cup. The addition of Monta and his team also make the story even more interesting.

But perhaps my favorite part is when the Doras face that certain team with pig-looking robots and they manage to defeat them by being focused again in their love for baseball. They also not always being the winner in every match; just aiming to face Arakawa Whites again. And the writer give it to us! Which is really satisfying!

Mugiwara Shintaro's work in OG Dorabase is amazing! Calling it "a good writing" will be underestimating. Although I'm not really keen on his other works like in Tamaemon's story or that all-human baseball team one.

Who’s your favorite Dorabase character? I really like Drump and Emoll myself. But I also really like Kuroemon and Shiroemon.
