Romanization note: the original Japanese uses ‘thema (テーマ),’ a German loanword meaning ‘theme.’ I’ve substituted the English term for simplicity’s sake, along with the other loanwords used, rather than doing a direct transliteration (which I usually do for lyrics).

Their album covers are cool and all but aren’t all of them practically the same? literally always a silver haired girl wearing blue?

Time to stop pretending I care about other artists and go back to our usual suspects. This time I’ll be doing their album Zankyou no Coffin (Resonating Coffin), which they released in 2016 in M3-37, right before they released Shuugeki no Romanesque (their previous album that I translated). As it turns out, Romanesque was a direct sequel to this album and I had absolutely no idea that it was a continuation, so you know, sorry to give you that one in medias res. I also could not find a video for this song but I trust you’ve found the album (残響のコフィン) on your own.

This song features someone yelling OH DESIRE, which as we all know is the #1 way to improve a song. Pretty chill track, my main criticism of this album in general is that it doesn’t go hard enough, the instrumentation is rather subdued compared to their other works, still the choruses for this song sound pretty great and make for a cool opening track.

When I did Romanesque I joked a little about the witch’s intentions, and said that I liked her having “no motives” and would be sad if motives were actually given to her character, and boy that came back to bite me because that is exactly what this track does. She was the firstborn of a king but could not rule the kingdom due to sexism, hooray, she grew up to hold a grudge for her younger brother and has decided to ruin his life and take everything from him. What can I say really, motives do make for better written characters but I personally really liked my context-less witch who went around ruining people’s lives for absolutely no reason. Lyrics are down below the cut and we’ll meet again soon.

Ok so the first track in the album is a small introductory narration, I won’t do that word-for-word but here’s basically what it says: Deep inside a dark forest a girl is locked away by her mother, a witch. From the window she can see a beautiful kingdom outside of the forest, and looking at it is all she does in her daily life. Also the witch, who is the perspective for the song, wants to take over the kingdom from her brother who's the king, as she wasn't allowed to become the king (despite being the firstborn) because it's a man's job. "But he's a powerless fool and one day, one day it'll all be mine". She’ll use her handy little girl, offering up her soul in exchange for power and stuff, really neat plan, what could possibly go wrong. On we go to the first song
