WIP Ask Game - The Weird Ones
Pretty self-explanatory.
Just reblog with some of the really random, off the wall and generally weird stuff from your WIP folder, or just ideas you think it'd be fun for people to send you asks about. The weird AUs, the random crossovers, the crackships, the pitches for whole-ass episodes of a show, just any oddball thing you think it'd be fun to get asks about :D
Anyway, here's my list:
May the Akko Be With You and Chicks Dig Magic Robots (Little Witch Academia)
21 and Hank do a Die Hard (Venture Brothers)
Operation I.M.P.A.C.T. (Codename Kids Next Door) (Armageddon parody)
Two Gems Play Bloodborne (Steven Universe)
Catradora Starcraft AU (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power/Starcraft)
Serene with the Steel Dragons (Yu-Gi-Oh/Super Robot Wars)
Rangers One and All (Power Rangers/Pacific Rim)

Just finished rewatching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Season 1 & 2 of the anime tv series and the movies Reflection/Detonation.
I feel like after watching it I need to (finish watching everything released of course) but also rewatch/watch more magical girl anime. There are certain things I move away from but always love and shows with magical girls are one of them.
But Nanoha! One of my absolute favs. Some thoughts.
Raising Heart is the most insane intelligent device. This thing doesn't give a fuck. Anytime anything major goes down the first reaction is: I must win at all cost. What I have in mind might kill me? Fuck you. Nothing kills me. I'm Raising Heart. I don't ever get destroyed. Do the crazy ass thing Nanoha.
Nanoha is surprisingly angsty and emo. I forgot how many problems she hides beneath that sunny exterior. Detonation legit goes into Nanoha chatting with her younger self about how she doesn't love herself. And that even if she doesn't she should try to remember other people do and value herself more.
These children don't act like children. They're middle aged in their mindset. I wish I had my shit this together in elementary/middle school. What the hell.
Fate is the best girl. Always. Stay soft forever, Fate.
Hayate remains my favorite. Reflection/Detonation made me happy with some Hayate focus, but I didn't much appreciate what happened to/around her. Also, for as much fucked up shit that she's gone through I think she's the most well-adjusted. It would honestly make me happy if I could ship Hayate with someone in the future series but legit nada... I can't think of anyone who fits. They should just bring back Reinforce somehow.
This anime has the best action sequences. I love their system of magic, how it's mixed with sci-fi. The world they built is interesting and really in depth with the details they put in. I love it.
Nanoha is incapable of meeting an antagonistic girl that attacks her without thinking: how do I save her? How do I become her friend? Running around like Captain Save A Ho. That's all she cares about. Saving ladies. I can respect it.
Going to rewatch Strikers and Vivid then watch Vivid Strike! sometime soon. Maybe I'll write Hayate fanfic. She deserves it. Even if only two people will read it. lol.
Honestly this series though. Top tier. At some point it would be nice if they made the very obvious subtext but is it really subtext if they bath together, sleep in same bed, and raise a child together couple of Fate and Nanoha an acknowledged canon thing.
Because the fandom knows. Everyone who watches knows.

Oh! I learned something recently that boosted my appreciation for a certain Love Live song.
First! The Nijigasaki High School Idol Club's fourth album, L! L! L! (Love the Life We Live), was in the fiction centered around each member making a song as part of a different school club's movie project. Kasumi's song, for the Magical Girl Research Club, was "TO BE YOURSELF", a song that I've previously compared to Nana Mizuki's songs for the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise, such as "Innocent Starter" and "Secret Ambition".
Then I recently came across a particular clip from an interview of Kasumi's voice, Mayu Sagara, that I can't seem to find again. In it, Sora Tokui (the voice of, among others, Nico Yazawa) was interviewing Mayu and Akina Hōmoto (Lanzhu's voice), and had asked when they decided to get into voice acting. Mayu's answer was that she'd been blown away by one particular anime series while in Junior High and decided right then that this was her dream. With a little prodding, she said the series was Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (the third season of the anime franchise).
So I need to see if I can find any interviews or similar about Mayu's personal reaction to or feelings about "TO BE YOURSELF", but — back when I made that comparison I bet I was more right than I thought!

The Lyrical Nanoha post
Today on “what to watch while waiting for season nine,” here’s my post on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, one of my favorite magical girl series.
So what’s marvelous in Lyrical Nanoha? The worldbuilding. There’s so much stuff in this show! Magical girls, magical girls in sports, magical girls in organized strike teams, magical girls in the government. Magic jewels, magic staffs, magic guns, magic plushies, magic rollerblades, upgrade devices (that look like tiny cute anime girls) magic circles, shapeshifters, cyborgs (that also look like cute anime girls) ancient weapons (that look like cute anime girls too) reincarnation, cloning, dimension ships, different worlds, ancient empires, and dragons.
I love that the devices talk and change shape. The visuals are wonderful. The transformation sequences are great and the attacks are cool. The stories are heartfelt and all the characters are fun, even if there are sometimes too many to keep straight. And Nanoha is one of the few magical girl series that has a whole magical world that the girls visit and eventually move to permanently.
Some parts of all-things-lyrical are available streaming on Prime but other parts are unlicensed so you can sail the seven seas guilt-free. There’s a site called “nyaa” where I have in the past gotten my hands on unlicensed anime. You can read the manga here, but the manga has 1)fanservice, including of underage characters, which the anime does not have and 2)a lot of characters who kind of all look the same which makes it less fun to read than some.
The series is also special because it shifts genre as the franchise goes on, starting as a traditional magical girl story, turning into a kind of technomagical war story, then unexpectedly morphing into a sports anime.
And, ooh look, I can link all the openings.
youtube
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
Your standard magical girl plot. Young Nanoha meets a magical ferret who gives her a transformation device because he needs her help to collect “jewel seeds” that can turn things into monsters. The ferret is actually a boy, an archaeologist who was transporting the magical items when an accident stranded him on earth. But a mysterious blonde girl with magic of her own is trying to get the jewel seeds too! Nanoha sees sadness in her rival’s eyes and resolves to save her, even as authorities from the magic dimension come to help get the situation under control.
And here begins the strange theme of the series: our heroines make friends by defeating them, in combat! It’s really very odd.
youtube
Nanoha A’s
Nanoha and Fate make a new friend, a wheelchair user named Hayate. Little do they know their new friend has magic of her own. Hayate’s health is deteriorating and her three magical guardians are desperate to save her at any cost. Nanoha and Fate can only help them by… defeating them in combat!
youtube
Nanoha Strikers
The third series is 26 episodes and jumps ahead to when the girls are in their twenties. They’ve moved to the magic dimension of Midchilda where they work for the government as professional magical girls responding to disasters. They’ve also become teachers. Nanoha’s two proteges Subaru and Tiana and Fate’s two proteges Erio and Caro learn to use their magical items and soon the whole gang is faced with an emergency! A villain has created a bunch of minions, who need to be befriended by defeating them in combat. He’s also created a clone of an ancient queen in the form of a little girl and, more than just befriending her, Nanoha adopts her.
StrikerS is a good series, it has loads of worldbuilding, new characters, epic battles, all kinds of good stuff. But having your magical girls be adult professionals who have military ranks is a big change from schoolgirls on Earth so it may weird your magical girl vibe.
youtube
Nanoha Vivid
Changes the vibe again. Now it’s a sports anime! With no enemies attacking, Nanoha and Fate’s daughter Vivio only needs to use her magic to compete in transformed martial arts. Vivio is the clone of an ancient queen, and she meets a cool emotionless girl who is the reincarnation of a friend of that queen and is driven by her ancestral memories to become the strongest fighter. She needs befriending through defeat! I do quite like that aspect: Einhart turns up driven by her past life memories to become the strongest and gets told quite matter-of-factly to join a gym and channel her mystical urges productively!
Vivid is a sports anime with transformation sequences. (in which the little girls become adults and body parts inflate like balloons.) The world of Midchilda seems less magical than it did in StrikerS; Vivio and her friends train at a gym that’s pretty much like a gym in our world and Vivio’s magic item doesn’t talk or change shape. The anime of Vivid also comes after some audio dramas and animates a small part of a manga, so the anime has a bunch of characters that are just there with no explanation of who they are, and it doesn’t end at the end. The manga is very long and is more about putting the characters in a series of cute costumes than actually having a story. I mean there is a story but boy do they spend a lot of time in swimsuits and Chinese dresses and maid outfits and more swimsuits...
youtube
Vivid Strike
Nanoha has moved on from her own series. The new heroine is a girl named Fuuka who has become estranged from her friend Rinne after Rinne experienced bullying and became a cold and closed-off person. How can Fuuka break through her friend’s shell and restore their relationship? Maybe her new friend Vivio can help!
Vivid Strike is a spinoff story that stars Fuuka with Vivio and her friends as side characters. The anime is a complete story arc and it’s a good show. But Midchilda has become even less magical; it now has normal non-flying cars and Fuuka gets in a fight with some gangstas. I’m pretty sure the government we saw in StrikerS wouldn’t let there be gangstas in the city!

So I watched all 4 series/seasons of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and I'm gonna map out my thoughts on all of them and rank them on the Weeb Ass Shit scale
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: 8.5/10 overall
Weeb 2/10 - Other than being a magical girl anime, there's not much you need to know about Japan or anime, and magical girls are more common in western cartoons now, so it ranks low imo
Ass 4/10 - There are panty shots and, unfortunately, a hot spring episode, both of which are made worse by the main character being 9, but the worst part imo is the magical girl sequence going out of its way to show her regular clothes coming off before the new outfit goes on. Lots of magical girl anime have Vague Nudity during the transformations, but this feels extra weird
Shit 2/10 - I would say there aren't many major plot holes or instances of bad writing, I really enjoyed the story, and it used the 13 episodes it had wisely, getting straight to the point. Not telling the viewer Nanoha's fake, non-magic explanation of why she's going away is the only thing that jumps out as lazy writing, but it doesn't really matter anyway since she explains for real in the end. There are a few one-off remarks about Nanoha's family that I initially was like "ok, not gonna explain that?" but then I remembered this is technically a spinoff of Triangle Heart, so those were probably added for Triangle Heart fans, not new viewers
Season 1 was an intriguing story that drew me in pretty quickly and one that could honestly stand on its own. I remember finishing episode 13 and thinking "what could possibly come after this, that seemed like a solid story to me!" It may seem odd to think "I don't really need a follow up season on this good anime," but the alternative comes up later. I think this was my favorite season, partly because Yuuno was a main character and he's my favorite. Pity me.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's: 8/10 overall
Weeb 3/10 - I don't have many specific examples, but I feel like this season had more anime tropes/Japanese culture in it. The only example I can really think of is Hayate bathing with Shamal and Vita, but I made a mental note after watching that the weeb ranking was higher
Ass 4.5/10 - Same panty shots and weird transformation sequences as before, as well ad aforementioned bathing. There was also another scene where a monster with tendrils or whatever grabbed Signum and her boobs got squished by it. You know what I mean.
Shit 3/10 - This was another really solid plot, and again it used its allotted episodes well, but I feel like it wasn't quite as good as season 1. Plus it had Hayate's paralysis heal after the Book of Darkness was destroyed, which is a dumb trope, but I don't dock more points for it because the book was causing the paralysis to begin with, and it didn't vanish overnight at least.
I didn't like this one as much, especially at first, but I really liked Nanoha getting more involved with the Bureau and official magic business, and I somehow didn't see the twist at the end of Graham and the Liese twins being part of the problem. Loved the peak 6 years ahead at the end where everyone's older, and Yuuno getting teased about "making process" with Nanoha was cute (and painful in retrospect, RIP Yuuno idk why the writers shoved you aside so hard). I once again thought "that was a great story with a solid wrap-up, what more could there be?" and yet there was more.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS: 7/10 overall
Weeb 3/10 - Anime battles, power levels, pupils aiming to surpass their mentors, pretty standard anime fare that's easy to understand, if you saw Dragonball as a kid you get it pretty much, and we're not in Japan anymore Toto, so don't worry about that
Ass 5/10 - Same stuff as before, including a weird, OOC scene where Subaru wakes Teana up by... groping her boobs. It was so out of place I almost had to make sure it was the same anime. Also, a 6 year old girl transforms into an adult woman à la Black Lady, and watching a grown woman in a vacuum sealed bodysuit with boob socks cry and act like a 6 year old is SUPER weird. At least Black Lady didn't act like Chibiusa...
Shit 4.5/10 - Wouldn't it be dumb if you named an anime after the main character, then divided focus between her and a new cast of characters so she's barely the main character anymore? Yeah, it was dumb. I like the idea of showing how Nanoha has matured by having her become a mentor to a new generation, but removing the focus from her so much was... idk, not what people were watching for? Also taking the really cool sci-fi magical girl anime to a more politic/bureaucratic place with power struggles in the Bureau was A Choice, but there were still plenty of cool fights, so it's fine
Remember Yuuno? The writers did for 2 whole lines of dialogue. Anyway, petty grievances aside, this season grew on me slowly. I didn't like Subaru and Teana much at first (loved the episode where Nanoha blasted Teana with a huge magic beam then Signum punched her later lol) but they moved up to Fine by the end. I passively wondered why all of the combat cyborgs were women, then they dropped the "all of us have a genetic copy of our creator in our wombs in case he dies" shit and I wished I was dead. Weird shit aside, I liked it overall, and, ONCE AGAIN thought "yeah, this would be a satisfying place to end this tale!" and I was right that time.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid: 3.5/10 overall
Weeb 5/10 - This is An Anime alright. Training camps, hot springs, sports tournaments, we've got some prime examples of Anime here
Ass 6/10 - I'm tempted to rate this higher, but I feel like if 10 is hentai then any higher than this is too much. But there's a lot more sexualized bullshit here. I was literally 28 seconds into an episode and Fate's clothing got shredded, SPECIFICALLY on her chest, during a mock battle. We've got double the kid-to-adult boobification sequences, and we've got a 14 year old nun with battle underboob. Can't forget sexual harassment of a 10 year old at the hot spring!
Shit 7/10 - Don't watch this. You know how I praised the others for being complete stories that used their 13 episodes well? NOT VIVID!!! The first half of the show was just putzing around and introducing Einhart, a convoluted character with a dumb concept and confusing motives (she explained them many times and I still don't know wtf she wanted). The second half got into the only thing that was kind of interesting, the magic/martial arts sports tournament thing, and THEY DIDN'T FINISH BECAUSE THEY RAN OUT OF EPISODES!!! They got to episode 12, didn't even try to finish, and used the 13th 23 minute slot as a RECAP EPISODE to, idk try to drum up interest for a season 2? Didn't happen, because the show was ASS, so if you cared (I don't, I considered not finishing after every single episode) you can just read the manga I guess I'll say it again, don't watch this. First of all, if Nanoha being the protagonist only part of the time annoyed me, imagine how much I loved her being a background character. Also, you know how magical girl anime are about fighting to save the world and stuff? And how one of Lyrical Nanoha's draws was the really cool sci-fi magic battles and the repeated reminder that Nanoha was putting her life on the line as a 9 year old, making the show somewhat darker than other magical girl shows with protagonists that young? What if we made it a slice of life sports anime where a group of kids tries to get stronger and win the sports tournament against tough foes! Fucking yawn. When you go from a kid learning how to output strong magic without killing herself to a bunch of kids playing the water and practicing "cutting water" you have to wonder where you went wrong
Unrelated overall thoughts:
It's probably not intentional, at least in the way I'm interpreting it, but the gender in this show is pretty delicious sometimes. LOVE when Intelligent Devices refer to their female users as sir, specifically Bardiche calling Fate sir is very good to me. Also a big fan of Olivie being called a king instead of a queen. A lot of girls in ViVid have typically male names, like Einhart, Harry, and Victor. Also Otto is a trans man, he told me himself.
As you know, Nanoha is well known for having two hands- one for Yuuno, and one for Fate. The show directly implies Yuuno likes Nanoha and less directly implies she also likes him. The show also makes Nanoha and Fate really gay, but not "overtly" (other than both being Vivio's moms) because homophobia. Which is more canon? Both. Why? Here's a diagram.
Tumblr media
As we can see, Vivio, Nanoha's child (I know she's adopted, that's not important here shhh) represents both Yuuno and Fate. We can also see that Nanoha loves blonde people.
As for the movies, I think season 1 was the better telling, but I honestly preferred the 2nd movie's telling of A's plot. Something I HATED!!! about both movies was the WEIRD lighting/shading choice for Nanoha's/Fate's chests that emphasized their nipples??? SO weird, I literally did a fucking double take every time that showed up.
TL;DR Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is good! Ignore ViVid

Hey I'm here to innocently ask you with no ulterior motives what stuff you have been watching recently? *bats eyelashes*
XD mm, at the time fo writing this, i've been re-binging various mgln (magical girl lyrical nanoha) series clips like the movie adaptations, strikers, and the battle of aces showcase. Sometimes I'll get lost in watching the whole thing or have it on as background noise and realize a lot of it has been playing, lol.
