Introduction to Sufi Doctrine by Titus Burckhardt
Titus Burckhardt’s Introduction to Sufi Doctrine stands as a luminous gateway into the heart of Islamic mysticism. With elegance and intellectual precision, Burckhardt distills the essence of Sufism, not merely as a historical or cultural phenomenon, but as a living spiritual path rooted in the deepest metaphysical truths of Islam.
First published in the mid-20th century, this work remains a definitive primer on Sufism, especially for those approaching the subject from a perennialist or traditionalist perspective. Burckhardt, a German Swiss metaphysician and traditionalist who was initiated into a Sufi order under the name Ibrāhīm ʿIzz al-Dīn (Sidi Ibrahim), brings to this book a rare combination of scholarly rigor, deep spiritual insight, and reverence for the sacred. Affiliated with the Traditionalist School—alongside figures like René Guénon and Frithjof Schuon—he stands as a bridge between East and West, articulating timeless wisdom in a language accessible to the modern mind without sacrificing the integrity of the tradition.
The book begins with a discussion of the foundations of Sufi doctrine, tracing its origin to the Qur’an and the inner teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Burckhardt emphasizes that Sufism is not a deviation or innovation within Islam, but rather its inner dimension (al-ḥaqīqa), its esoteric heart. He outlines how the exoteric practice of religion (sharīʿah) leads to the esoteric truth (ṭarīqah and ḥaqīqah) for those called to the inward journey.
What makes this book exceptional is its clarity. In a relatively short space, Burckhardt manages to explain key Sufi concepts—such as the stations (maqāmāt), states (aḥwāl), gnosis (maʿrifah), the role of the Shaykh, and the importance of spiritual initiation—with precision and depth. He bridges the experiential and the doctrinal, never separating the intellectual from the spiritual.
His treatment of metaphysics—particularly the nature of Unity (Tawḥīd), the symbolic function of the cosmos, and the ontological hierarchy of being—is heavily influenced by Ibn Arabi and the Akbarian school, yet articulated in a language intelligible to modern Western readers. At the same time, Burckhardt preserves the sacred language and atmosphere of the tradition, never diluting its profundity for the sake of accessibility.
A highlight of the book is Burckhardt’s discussion of the Sufi method of spiritual realization. He articulates the transformative role of invocation (dhikr), the necessity of divine grace, and the journey of the soul from multiplicity to Unity. He also draws important parallels with other spiritual traditions, affirming the perennial philosophy while respecting the uniqueness of Islam’s revelation.
In our time, where Sufism is often romanticized or misrepresented as a mere poetic tradition stripped of its doctrinal roots, Introduction to Sufi Doctrine is more important than ever. It restores the vertical dimension of Sufism—the link between heaven and earth, between man and the divine.

This poem by the Persian Sufi Poet Abū Saʿīd Abū'l-Khayr or Abusa'id Abolkhayr
(Persian: ابوسعید ابوالخیر)  (December 7, 967 - January 12, 1049)
is inscribed on the tomb of Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī
and is often incorrectly attributed to him.
___________
Transliteration:
bāz ā bāz ā, har ān keh hastee bāz ā
gar kāfer o gabr o bot parastee bāz ā
een dargeh-ye mā, dargeh-ye nomeedee neest
sad bār agar tobeh shekastee bāz-ā
___________
I provide three translations. The first, by Barks, is the most famous rendering into English. Barks captures the simplicity of the sentiment. Gamart more accurately translates the verse. My own version is meant to be literal, rather than poetic. None of the English translations capture the repugnance that  the words infidel, heretic, pagan, unbeliever or idolater carry in the original. Please read the note for further insight into this poem.
___________
Translation by Coleman Barks:
Come, come, whoever you are.
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving. It doesn't matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vows a thousand times. Come, yet again, come, come.
___________
Translation by Sidi Ibrahim Gamart:
Come again, please, come again, Whoever you are. Religious, infidel, heretic or pagan. Even if you promised a hundred times And a hundred times you broke your promise, This door is not the door Of hopelessness and frustration. This door is open for everybody. Come, come as you are.
___________
My own more literal translation:
Come, come, whoever you are, come again
Be you faithless, unbeliever or idolater, come again
This doorway of ours, it is not the entry to despair
If you’ve broken your repentance a hundred times, come again.
___________
Notes:
bāz ā = come again; welcome (bāz  means both “again” and “open”; both meanings are relevant here)
kāfer = usually translated as infidel, the basic meaning of the word in Arabic (kufr) is someone who is ungrateful [for God’s blessings], or who has no faith; by extension, someone who does not believe in the tenants of Islam, who is a pagan, non-believer, or member of a non-Muslim religion. It is commonly used as a pejorative term.
gebr or gabr = the word originally referred to someone who was a Zoroastrian but came to have a pejorative meaning referring to any non-Muslim, or sometimes to any unbeliever The word continues to be used as a slur against Christians in some former areas of the Ottoman Empire.
Bot parasti = idol worshiper (again, a pejorative term)
All three of the phrases used have the sting of extremely insulting, pejorative terms. All three place the person being referred to as the most outcast or outside categories in Islamic society. To say they are welcome is to go against all expectations.
* Note that the word Dargah has many meanings, several of which are indicated directly in this line: portal, door, threshold, the site of the saint’s tomb. The royal court (dargah) was also where the king dispensed legal rulings and justice, which also plays into the poem: no matter how many transgressions you have made, this is not the place for having no hope. Baz A, means, come, come again, welcome.
* درگاه (درگهِ) dargāh (dar=door; gāh or gah=place): Portal, door; location of the door [into a house or building]; threshold; a royal court, a palace; a mosque; shrine or tomb (of some reputed saint}; place of pilgrimage.
** nomidi: no hope (na=no; omid=hope)
tobeh (Arabic “tawbeh”) = repentance. In Islam repentance is an individual matter between an individual and the Divine. By using this word the poet transfers the point of view from society’s vantage point (someone who is outside the fold of society), to the personal (what is my relationship to the Divine).

The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, CP Muhammad Shehu Dalijan, has confirmed the arrest of Aminu Ibrahim, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Kaura Namoda State constituency. Ibrahim faces allegations of involvement in banditry and kidnapping. In a recent statement, CP Dalijan disclosed that the District Head of Kaura Namoda, Jafaru Abdullahi Kumburki, and former chairman of Kaura Namoda LGA, Nasiru Muhammad, are also in police custody for similar allegations. Further investigations are underway involving three district heads from Danjibga, Bukkuyum, and Unguwar Gyauro in Tsafe and Bukkuyum LGAs, though their names have not been disclosed. The police commissioner elaborated that a preliminary investigation revealed that the District Head of Kaura Namoda allegedly collaborated with two suspected bandits’ collaborators, Bala and Hali Sidi, to kidnap nine people in Gidan Sambo village, Kaura Namoda LGA. The suspects allegedly collected a ransom of N800,000 before releasing their captives. The investigation also led to the arrest of Ibrahim for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of 80-year-old Alhaji Ibrahim Sarkin Fada of Kasuwar Daji village. CP Dalijan detailed that the former chairman of Kaura Namoda LGA is accused of conspiring with Hali Sidi and Alhaji Bala to kidnap Alhaji Ango of Kumurya village. The district heads of Danjibga, Unguwar Gyauro, and Bukkuyum are currently facing an investigative panel instituted by the state government to investigate their alleged involvement in banditry activities. He said the police has carried out its investigations and forwarded the discoveries it had made to the state governor, Dauda Lawal for immediate action. He assured that 'the police authorities in Niger state remain uncompromising in their determination to unmask, arrest and prosecute anyone found to be linked with the heinous crime of banditry or any other crime in the state. CP Dalijan said there was an ongoing investigation on the issue, and everybody found directly or indirectly with the act will be questioned. He pledged that more efforts would be made by Zamfara State Police Command in ensuring that the menace of banditry is reduced while justice is done.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Niger’s junta has authorized troops from neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso to come to its defense, raising the stakes in a standoff with other West African nations who are threatening force to reinstate Niger’s democratically elected president.
The junta leader, Brig. Gen. Abdrahmane Tchiani, signed two executive orders authorizing the “security forces of Burkina Faso and Mali to intervene on Niger territory in the event of aggression,” senior junta official Oumarou Ibrahim Sidi said late Thursday, after hosting a delegation from the two countries in the Nigerien capital, Niamey.
Sidi did not provide further details about the military support from the two countries whose military regimes have said any use of force by the West African bloc ECOWAS against Niger’s junta would be treated as an act of war against their own nations.
The agreement was the latest of several actions taken by Niger’s mutinous soldiers to defy sanctions and consolidate a junta they have said would rule for up to three years, further escalating the crisis after last month’s coup in the country of more than 25 million people.
Niger was seen as one of the last democratic countries in the Sahel region below the Sahara Desert that Western nations could partner with against a growing jihadi insurgency.
The ECOWAS commission president, Omar Alieu Touray, said Friday that the bloc’s threat to use force to reinstate the deposed Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum is “still on the table,” rejecting the junta’s three-year transition plan.
Eleven of the bloc’s 15 countries — not including the military-ruled countries of Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger itself — have expressed commitments to deploy troops to restore democracy in Niger once a decision is made to intervene.
The bloc would in the meantime continue to explore diplomatic options to reverse the coup, Touray told reporters in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja.
The latest of such diplomatic efforts came Thursday when Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who is the chairman of the regional bloc, sent a delegation of Islamic leaders to speak with the junta.
Touray said the West African heads of state would decide on when to use force whenever it feels like all diplomatic means have failed.
“ECOWAS cannot just fold its hands,” he asserted.
Details of what has been called the ECOWAS “standby” force have not be released. Regional officials have suggested any military intervention would be like the force deployed in Gambia in 2017 to force Yahya Jammeh out of power as president after he refused to concede an election loss.
The junta has been exploiting grievances among the population toward Niger’s former colonial ruler, France. It also has accused Bazoum’s government of failing to do enough to protect the country from Islamic extremists, and has asked the Russian mercenary group Wagner for help.
On Friday, Niger also faced new sanctions when the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation — which has signed $750 million in grant programs with the country since 2008 — suspended operations that focused on improving agriculture, women’s literacy and roads in Niger. The coup was “contrary to the principles of democratic governance,” the U.S. agency said.
ECOWAS already has joined Western and European countries in imposing sanctions against Niger, including cutting the supply of its electricity from Nigeria and the closure of borders with the countries’ neighbors.
Touray acknowledged Friday that those sanctions have resulted in “serious socio-economic crises” in Niger, but said the sanctions were “for the interest of the people of Niger.”

By • Olalekan Fagbade How Governor submitted ‘blank’ Commissioners’ list to beat deadline     The long-awaited commissioner nominees’ list forwarded by Governor Mai Mala Buni to the state assembly was finally unveiled by the speaker, Hon. Buba Chiroma-Mashio. Daily Trust checks reveal that the first batch of the list which was purportedly released on July 27 remained unveiled until during last Tuesday’s plenary when a second batch was brought. The development had fuelled suspicions that the first batch was a blank list meant to beat the constitutionally required 60 days deadline. However, both the state government and leaders of the state house of assembly said four names were pencilled in the first list. A member of the state assembly confirmed to Daily Trust that indeed the letter earlier sent to them through the Secretary to the State Government contained no names. But the speaker, Hon. Buba Chiroma-Mashio, in an interview with newsmen in Damaturu on Tuesday said there was nothing like a blank list to beat the deadline, adding that the house received the first batch of the list on 27 July. Daily Trust reports that the final list released at Tuesday’s plenary contained 20 nominees; 18 men and 2 women drawn from all the local government areas of the state. Those on the list are: Hon. Mohammed Garba Gagiyo – Bade; Engr. Usman Ahmed – Bursari; Hon. Musa Mustapha – Damaturu; Ya Jalo Badama – Damaturu ; Prof. Bello Kawuwa – Fika; Alhaji Ibrahim Jajere – Fune; Ali Goniri – Gujba; Aji Yerima Bularafa – Gulani; Alhaji Mohammed Abatcha – Gulani; Dr. Mairo Amshi – Jakusko; Abdullahi Bego – Jakusko; Hon Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa – Karasuwa and Barma Shettima – Machina. Others are: Engr. Umar Wakili Duddaye – Nangere; Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss – Nguru; Bar. Sale Samanja – Potiskum ; Yusuf Umar Potiskum – Potiskum; Arch. Ahmed Buba Abba Kyari – Tarmuwa; Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana – Yusufari and Hon. Kaigama Umar – Yunusari The Secretary to the Yobe State Government (SSG), Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, reportedly forwarded a letter containing a list to the Yobe State Assembly for screening and confirmation on July 27 but the house failed to unveil the names to the public. Consequently, rumours had circulated in the last two weeks that in a bid to beat the 60-day constitutionally required deadline to form an executive council; Governor Buni sent a letter without attaching a list of commissioner nominees to the state assembly. The development sparked discussions among politicians, citizens, and the media given the fact that the speaker at their emergency meeting on that day only announced the receipt of the letter from the governor without reading the content to members. An insider (a lawmaker) in the assembly revealed that the 24 members, except the speaker, were not on the list as claimed by the speaker and the state government. “Although I have been working here for over a decade, we heard that the SSG submitted the list of nominees on that day but some of my colleagues were asking who made the list, but could not get an answer. “Some people said nothing was contained in the list; it was just a blank paper sent to the house by the state governor so that people could say they had met the deadline to form an executive council,” the source who wished to remain unnamed due to the sensitive nature of the matter said. The source said it was unrealistic for the assembly to have held onto the commissioner nominees list for more than two weeks without screening or making it public if indeed it was true that the SSG submitted it. Meanwhile, there are concerns among the youth and party stakeholders in the state on why the list is coming late as many state governors have constituted their cabinets to move their agenda forward. However, a Damaturu-based youth, Hussaini Muhammad, said politics in Yobe State seemed to be a game by the same players without substitute and new tactics. “Usually,
governors in Yobe used to send their commissioner nominees list to the state assembly as early as possible but this present governor spent at least 2 months searching for his cabinet and that is why many people think that new faces would arrive, but unfortunately things have not changed.” ‘Nothing like blank list’ But the speaker, Hon. Buba Chiroma-Mashio, in an interview with newsmen in Damaturu on Tuesday said there was nothing like a blank list of commissioner nominees to beat the deadline, insisting that the house received the first batch of the list on 27 July. He said the first batch of names submitted to the assembly contained four names, adding that the delay in the confirmation process was due to the assembly’s commitment to ensuring that all nominees were confirmed at once. “We received four names from the first batch of the commissioner nominees last time. After receiving the second batch, we merged them for screening to follow the serial. That is why you could see that they are separated; first and second batches. “In short, Yobe State assembly received the first batch of the four nominees from the executive on 27 July and the second batch last week, making them 20 in number. ‘‘The reason why I did not disclose the list is that we might not go for their screening and people would be asking why we did not call them (nominees) for screening. Since we had a first batch list, we just waited for His Excellency to send the second list to us,” he said. He said the nominees will be screened in batches starting from the 16th, 17th, and 18th of August. Similarly, Mallam Mamman Muhammad, the Director General of Press and Media Affairs to Governor Buni, said the state government had submitted the list of commissioner nominees to the assembly for screening and confirmation on 27 July, 2023 to beat the 60-day constitutional deadline. While admitting that there was a delay for the second batch list because new ministries would be created, he insisted that nothing was done outside of the constitution. ‘‘The state government wants to expand ministries which is why the second batch list was delayed. The state assembly was given a good time to screen the nominees before the second batch. So, I think the house will answer this question. ‘‘The first list was given to them within the timeframe for screening while the second batch came thereafter so they are the ones that you will ask why they did not start screening till they received the second batch,’’ he said. Efforts to speak with the SSG were unsuccessful as he neither responded to calls nor a text message. #blanklist #Governor #Politics

Bismillahi Babuna, wa Sallallahu 'ala Sayyidina Muhammad. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim Haqqani (qaddas allahu sirrahu) taught a more Merciful way of Sufism and thus is (Ghawth al-Anam the Support/Helper of the People). Now, and even more from the Unseen, being taught of Sufism that is not found in books of the past, but he gave a more fluid modern feel approach. Mawlana Shaykh Nazim Haqqani (qaddas allahu sirrahu) simply taught Short-cuts and tips to save a lot of time with this method of Teaching, to arrive to openings.
Anyway, Tasawwuf or simply Sufism of the past has completely changed its face and its rules today. Most of what the books of the past say, is now redundant-(no longer needed or useful) but not useless, today (generally Speaking) The books of the past, serve more as rough (Guidance - Irshad) rather then as True (Guides Hadi) today. And I will explain this as some people's Nafs will jump up and down like monkeys, usually the ones that profess of studying basic Islam and thus due to the little amount of (Book Knowledge). Thinking themselves as some type of authority. They think themselves clever rather than thinking maybe it (this ilm) should make me more humble! This is a Major sickness of those brothers and sisters that have studied only some of Deen, some Arabic and suddenly they know better. There two types of knowledge (Kasbi) and (Wahbi). Kasbi 'ilm is what you earn by studying. Wahbi 'ilm is given or bestowed from Allah. Sayyidi 'Abdal-'Aziz Dabbagh was (Ummi Unlettered) but the ability to understanding very difficult Hadith and given commentary of Quran. As Sayyidi 'Abdal-'Aziz Dabbagh (The Unlettered Sufi was given (bestowed) 'ilm Wahbi Knowledge given directly to the Heart) As to what we are saying and this Daleel; Near the End of Time People will receive many Powerful True Dreams as a form of Mercy, Good News, Sabr and Protection as Compensation to stay Steadfast with their (Iman Faith). This is based on Hadith Near the End of Time People will receive the reward of 10 Sahabi of Badr or Ahl Badri (Ahl Badri are the higest ranking Sahabah) this is Hadith based. Near the End of Time People holding on to one Sunnah will be like holding onto HOT COAL. this is Hadith based. (Thus the rewards for the Muslims of the End of the Time is Different) The Shadhili Masters have said "if you don't have a Sufi Shaykh, then take Dalail al-Khayrat as your (Sufi Shaykh and Guide Hadi)" Why Sufi Masters will be hard to find. in the old says the Shadhili Masters and other Tariqahs too. But Shadhili Masters said you had to be 40 years to join the Tariqah, know Matn of Text (meaning know 'ilm to some degree) fast 40 days and Have a JOB! yes you must have a job to join the Shadhili Tariqah this is found in the foot notes. None of that applies today! Hazrat Sabir Pak of Kalyari Chishti qaddas allahu sirrahu about Middle of 14th Islamic year (we now in 1441 AH) The Great Chishti Hazrat Makhdum Ali Ahmed Sabir Kalyari (qaddas allahu sirrahu) gives reference to his Grandfather Shaykh Abdal Qadir Jilani qaddas allahu sirrahu who describes the Coming of Imam Mahdi and modern day, In middle of the 14th Islamic year (we now in 1441 AH) That Hasad-(Jealousy) and Ghill-(Grudes) be will be widespread. The Authoritative Gnostics (Sufi Shaykhs) will be indulging in (Excessive Backbiting Ghiyba). The Sincere Sufi Shaykhs will be Rare and Weak. (Weak could mean they are not well known or famous like the Authoritative Shaykh or will have limited resources). *End the near of Time, Salawats of Great Power be Unleash and from some Salawat will unleash Great Power too* Near End of Time the rules change and energy changes, many Salawat will Open up like (Sayfallah Swords of Allah) to protect you and feed you against evil as evil is Dark and Salawat is Nur Light. Dalail al-Khayrat was composed just under 500 years Sidi Ahmad Ibn Idris (qaddas allahu sirrahu) (1760–1837) so roughly about 15/160 years ago he was given Salawat Azimyyah which if read one is said to be 1 Million Dalail al-Khayrat and outweighs Shadhili Litanies. "O Khidr recite all Shadhili Litanies, which he did, now recite that which encompasses all Litanies, Salawat and Istaghfar, best in Reward and Greatest in number. What's that he asked? The Prophet (salllahu `alayhi wa salam) And this was the reply: The Three Idrisiyyah Keys were then given directly by Prophet (salllahu `alayhi wa salam) to Sidi Ahmed ibn Idris; Salawat Azimiyyah, Tahleel Idrisi and Istaghfar al Kabir. Thus from this one can easily "The Three Idrisiyyah Keys outweigh all the Shadhili Litanies" Note: Sidi Ahmad ibn Idris was Born in (1760), which is 25 years after Sidi Ahmed Tijani and passed away 22 years after Sidi Ahmed Tijani in (1837). Thus Salawats at the (End of Time) seem to be Eclipsing -(significance or of power) to some degree it looks based on the above and making making Spiritual stations easier to reach, in this time period. about 70 years ago, Sayyid as-Salawaat (The Master of Salawaats) of Shaykh Sharafuddin ad-Daghestani qaddassAllahu sirrahu. Shaykh Sharafudeen Dagestani's (Sayyad as-Salawat) is the (Khatm Seal) of the Haqqani Dhikr, within it lies All Unseen Secrets. Sayyid As-salawat Power will unleash Armies of Angels with Huge Makhlook (Beasts) with Swords to Fight the Army of Dajjal's Jinns. The Tijani Master, Shaykh Sidi Ibrahim Niasse has talked about Salawat al-Fatihi will unleash Great Power, that hasn't been released yet, in the Time of Dajjal. Due to the Fayd Spiritual power of Salawat al-Fatihi. Salawat Ya Wahhaab uses similar wording as Salawat al-Fatihi and its Secrets are within the (ism Name of Wahhaab) (adding Sayyidina has Secret of Dunya needs) and within this (..Fatihil-Abwaab). Thus Near the End of Time, Salawat is the Key! and it will save you, not these books of the old, which have some benefit but don't talk about this time we are living in. And this Sufism has changed it, its secrets can be opened and given to many today easily if they came their focus 5000 Salawat Ya Wahhaab that will indeed help them with many of a crisis we are living today. Salawat Ya Wahhaab; *Allahumma Ya Wahhaab, Salli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammadin Faatihil-Abwaab wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa sallim*
