HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOB DYLAN—What a milestone for a cultural figure who enlivened the soundtrack of a generation, stirred up the world and the Spirit, and is still cranking out masterworks. I can’t compete with the surfeit of well-written Bob-fest birthday tributes going out today, but I did find this cover of “It Takes a Lot to Laugh It Takes a Train to Cry.” It was a rehearsal take with The Rover Boys, sung by the band’s house Dylanologist Adam Savetsky. We wanted to take it into a Creedence-zone and we had fun trying…Meanwhile, HB Bob and thank you for your volumes of words and music.

Tina Turner, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Ike & Tina Turner and as a solo artist, has died at 83.
No cause or date of death was given in the statement posted May 24 on Turner’s Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” it read. “With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.”
Turner had “been ill, but I never thought this day would come,” Darlene Love said on Facebook.
“There will never be a performer like Tina Turner again,” Love wrote. “She was one of a kind. Icon, legend, warm-hearted, hard-working, legs for days, hitmaker, pioneer, hardest-working artist, survivor. She was simply the best.”
Former Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler recalled seeing the Turners open for the Rolling Stones in 1966 and becoming “an instant fan.”
“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner,” Mick Jagger said of his Live Aid duet partner.
“She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her.”
Turner broke away from her abusive marriage and musical partnership with Ike and launched a hugely successful solo career in the 1980s with hits like “Better be Good to Me,” “Private Dancer” and many others.
“Thank you for being the inspiration to millions of people around the world for speaking your truth and giving us the gift of your voice,” Bryan Adams said in eulogizing his one-time touring partner.
In 1990, Turner launched a sold-out tour of Europe with the Neville Brothers, leaving Arron Neville to mourn her loss.
“She showed us much love and respect,” he wrote on social media.
Jazz guitarist Al Di Meola called Turner “the epitome of class.” Former NBA star “Magic” Johnson said “she gave one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.” And John Fogerty “loved her version of (Creedence Clearwater Revival’s) ‘Proud Mary.’”
“(Turner) taught women that they could be strong, sexy, fearless and their own person,” Carole King said. “May she rest in peace and power.”
Turner retired from music in 2009. But her influence was secure.
“There was nothing her deep, robust voice couldn’t do,” the Rock Hall said in its online eulogy.
"Down on the Corner" is a song by American band Creedence Clearwater Revival. It appeared on their fourth album, Willy and the Poor Boys in 1969. The song peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US that year and the flip side, "Fortunate Son", reached #14.
The song depicts the fictional band Willy and the Poor Boys, and how they play on street corners for nickels. Lead singer John Fogerty explained how he came up with the lyrics: “I was kind of inspired by seeing an advertisement in the paper one day, It was an ad from Disney that said in great big letters ‘Winnie the Pooh’. Something in my brain said ‘Winnie the Pooh and the Pooh Boys’. Obviously, that was close to ‘Willy and the Poor Boys’. As I began to develop this idea it turned into music in that weird mystical, almost uncontrollable way that music comes to songwriters. Winnie the Pooh is still my favorite character who I’ve shared with my daughter Kelsy since the day she was born, though she's growing out of it. But I'm not.”
Leonard Charles Williams (born February 16, 1945) is a singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead vocalist for the soul/funk group Tower of Power in the early 1970s. As a solo artist, he made several hit recordings, including 1978’s “Cause I Love You” and 1977’s “Choosing You”.
He was born in Little Rock and moved to Oakland before the age of 1. Learning to play the trumpet in elementary school fueled his interest in music; his skills as a vocalist were first nurtured by singing in gospel choirs and groups around the Bay Area. He worked with several notable artists, such as Sly Stone, Andraé Crouch, Billy Preston, and members of the Hawkins family, Edwin, Walter, and Tramaine.
After winning several local talent contests, he signed his first recording contract with Fantasy Records. He cut two singles for the label, including “Lisa’s Gone” and “Feelin Blue”, written by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1972, he joined the emerging funk band Tower of Power. A string of hits followed, including “So Very Hard to Go”, “What Is Hip”, “Don’t Change Horses (In The Middle of the Stream)” and “Willing To Learn”. During his two years with the group, he participated in three albums: Back To Oakland, Urban Renewal, and the gold LP Tower of Power. Williams and Tower of Power toured throughout the US, Europe, and Asia.
He is married to Deborah Williams. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

IT'S INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY! STORY + SONG OF THE WEEK! “Workin’ on a Building” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/workin-on-a-building-live-9-02 …For years this gospel song has been a staple of my live set, and I’ve played it with equal fervor in dive bars, churches, concert halls, and wherever else. It’s believed it came from a 19th Century calypso work song sung by slaves in the Caribbean, and that crossed into the lexicon of Negro spirituals. In the 1920s it became popular and is now a blues-gospel standard, famously played by BB King, Bill Monroe, Elvis Presley, The 77s, Swan Silvertones, and other notables. I learned it from the Blue Ridge Rangers/John Fogerty version, which he drew from the touchstone 1934 Carter Family record—Oddly, A.P. Carter copyrighted it and added his writing credit even though it was already credited to Lillian Bowles and Winifred O. Hoyle (with slightly different lyrics). Meanwhile, you don’t have to be a carpenter to get the floor plan of this song… https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/workin-on-a-building-live-9-02
